Canada's Number One Business-Comedy Podcast is back with Adam Hoffman, a Calgary finance veteran whose career has taken him from tax law and startups to private markets, and helping wealthy families figure out legacy and what to do with their money.
Adam joins Shubh and Philippe to talk about discovering the stock market on dial-up internet, studying business and law, getting creative with tax planning, building Katal Energy with Craig Latimer, and eventually finding his way into private-market investing.
Then Adam pitches three businesses.
Father Figure: A GLP-1 lifestyle brand for dads who want the benefits of weight-loss medication without sacrificing their carefully cultivated dad bods. Complete with community, clothing, and pants that expand just a little after Thanksgiving. Shubh declares it one of the best business names we've ever had.
Guilt Trip: A service that weaponizes the guilt only immigrant parents can deliver. Whether it's hiring a professional parent to motivate your children or designing an elaborate passive-aggressive vacation for your own parents, there's apparently an enormous market for making people feel like they're disappointing their families.
And finally: A very dark, very expensive approach to end-of-life planning that somehow leads to volcanoes, private islands, pre-death funerals, and a surprisingly thoughtful conversation about telling people how much they mean to you while they're still alive. Working title: Fly Me Into a Volcano.
Also discussed:
- Craig Latimer, lost AirPods, and the economics of paying for lunch
- The Grindr PurposeMed acquisition
- Jewish grandmother guilt versus Indian mother guilt
- Philippe's missed opportunity to become a professional ballet dancer
- Why Shubh wants to be remembered as a "force of nature"
Final scores: Father Figure earns 70 out of 75 salsas from Shubh, while Guilt Trip earns 70 from Philippe.
Three business ideas. One very unusual career. And more discussion about dad bods, guilt, and mortality than anyone reasonably expected.
Your Business is on the Line is a presentation of Indian Dad Media in association with Thursday Media. Brought to you in part from our friends at the New Network.
