Ep26: ManChap & Ms. Morrison's Everything Jam

YBIOTL Episode 26
===

Shubh: [00:00:00] Welcome to episode 26 of your businesses online. We're halfway there, Philippe.

Philippe: To 52.

Shubh: 52. Matt, 52 was kind of the- We've

Philippe: been doing this for half of a year.

Shubh: We've been doing it for half of a year.

Philippe: Wow. What... I don't know. That's insane.

Shubh: You, um- Oh, shit ... um, our friend Matt, my friend Matt Morrison, soon to be Philippe's friend, Matt Morrison is here.

Hey. Um, Matt, uh, do you just maybe want to describe what your experience has been like today since you arrived, uh, at where you thought, right, where I sent you to now?

Matt: Well, I was real nervous when I started, when I left home.

Shubh: Yep.

Matt: And I got to the wrong building. Um-

Shubh: Well, you're being very kind. Why did you get to the wrong building, Matt?

Matt: [00:01:00] Well, I know there was a discrepancy. I, I looked at, uh, the link that you gave me, and it showed a picture of one location, but then the link was to a different location.

Shubh: Yeah, again, he's being very kind- ... 'cause he is a very kind person. I, uh, sent him a- an address. So the, the, the lease owners,

Matt: right, Philippe, of this space m-

Philippe: have, have- That's me

moved,

Matt: have moved.

Philippe: Well, now we're the lease owners, technically. Well, you're

Shubh: the... Yes. Yeah. But they moved.

Philippe: We kicked them out.

Shubh: Their Google Maps, they moved on Google Maps. I did not realize this. Mm. I haven't been here for a couple weeks. Philippe's been away. So that was part of it, and then when you walked into the, the studio, Matt, what was happening?

Philippe: It was chaos in here.

Shubh: Yeah. I'm not

Matt: gonna... Yeah,

Philippe: it was chaos.

Shubh: Yeah,

Philippe: they- You built, you built these walls. I built these walls.

Shubh: Or you

Philippe: just put up- You know what? I don't... What is this, felt?

Shubh: Shout out Dollarama. Don't pull on it.

Philippe: Okay. Is it felt? What is it?

Shubh: Uh, this is drop cloth for painters. Shout out,

Philippe: Chaz. Ooh.

Shubh: Uh- Shout

Philippe: out, Chaz.

Shubh: We got some, uh, two-sided, uh, stick-

Philippe: Silverfish ...

Shubh: we got some two-sided sticky tape. Uh, we got, uh, a bunch of [00:02:00] ring lights I found in my house. Philippe also had a ring light. Uh, I got a tripod from my daughter's video camera that's holding up our brand-new camera so Philippe and I look cool.

Philippe: Woo.

Shubh: Uh, so we built a podcast studio in, uh, two and a half hours with only equipment from the dollar store.

Philippe: Amazing.

Shubh: We should take, uh, remind me, we gotta take, uh, Philippe, you have the earphone 'cause we can't move any of my stuff.

Philippe: I'll do- We'll have to- I'll take a video right now ... we'll have to take a video. 'Cause it is so crazy. Like, it seems like on the video that there's nothing going on. We're balancing stools- Would you-

on chairs and-

Shubh: Would you, would you say based on the video it looks a bit like a podcast studio?

Philippe: Uh, like, for us. It looks good here.

Shubh: Yeah.

Philippe: Yeah. M-

Shubh: Matt, you look sharp. Yeah. Looks like you got a little- Yeah ... little drop cloth. Did,

Matt: did, did Chaz, uh, supply the drop cloths from, uh-

Shubh: You know what? ... Dollarama? He didn't.

He hasn't done shit, honestly, so. Oh.

Philippe: Yeah, he's too busy.

Shubh: Um, Philippe, Matt and I have known each other for a very long time. Matt is married to, uh, one of my wife's closest friends.

Philippe: Whoa. Sunita. Yeah.

Shubh: I can shout [00:03:00] her out, yeah. For sure. Dr. Chacko.

Philippe: Mm-hmm.

Shubh: Um, delightful. Matt is also delightful. Uh, Matt likes basketball.

You know how we're always making basketball references?

Matt: You're a big basketball

Philippe: fan. He's,

Shubh: he's probably one of the one or one people who actually gets the references.

Matt: Did you see OG last night? No, you know what? I- I think y- I think, Chaz- Were you prep- I think you prepped- Were you prep, were you

Philippe: prepping all night for the podcast?

Matt: You, you... No, I didn't watch any. I just watched, you know, um, basically Raptors games if they're in the playoffs. So I don't watch regular season basketball or regular season sports for that matter.

Philippe: No

Matt: one does. I basically read about them and then, and then if a team that I like is in the playoffs, then I'll-

Shubh: Then he texts me about it

Matt: then I'll, I'll tie in.

Shubh: He, uh, he- Matt's claim to fame is, uh, uh, when Pascal Siakam was drafted, you know, late in the first round. He texted me right away and was like, "I think this Siakam kid's gonna be amazing." And I was like, "Nobody knows who this kid is." I

Matt: should be a scout.

Shubh: You should be a scout.

Matt: Spicy, you called Spicy P early?

Shubh: I called Spicy P, yeah.

Matt: Damn.

Shubh: Uh, Matt- Well, they all look good ... M- uh, Matt, former fire- firefighter?

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: But [00:04:00] you, um, you use a lot more water in your firefighting than most people. I don't know. That was

Matt: weird. That's good. That's... No, I understand. I understand.

Shubh: For the, for the audience, you wanna explain that?

Matt: Somebody-

Shubh: You, you were on the dive team.

Matt: Yeah. I was. I, uh, was a firefighter for 18 years. Um, yeah, and I was on the dive team for most of the time I was a firefighter, so yeah. Uh-

Shubh: And, uh, now stay-at-home dad.

Matt: Stay-at-home dad.

Shubh: But not just d- Any- Sorry. In addition. Go ahead, Phil. You

Philippe: have firefighting questions?

Yeah, I got firefighting questions. What, the dive team- Mm ... in Calgary, but isn't their river shallow as hell? Wh- what are you doing going under there? Well, there's lots of m- We, the, the

Matt: weir- We, we dive in there ... the weir,

Shubh: right? The

Matt: weir's quite dangerous. There, there, there's, there's some deep sections of the, of the river.

Um, but then there's, um, manmade lakes- Oh ... for Calgary and the reservoir, of course.

Shubh: Yeah. It's very dangerous. Water's very dangerous. Water.

Philippe: The reservoir, I wouldn't... Do people swim in there just for fun or?

Matt: Uh, I-

Shubh: I don't think you're allowed to swim in there ...

Matt: cold. I don't know if you're allowed to even- But they

Shubh: fall off their sailboats

Matt: allowed to canoe in there and water ski. Okay.

Shubh: Hm.

Matt: Yeah, yeah.

Philippe: Huh.

Matt: Yeah. So-

Shubh: Um, Matt's a [00:05:00] stay-at-home dad. Also, uh, uh, hopefully I'm not giving away one of your pitches.

Matt: Oof.

Shubh: Um, you know what he made me last year? Made me homemade cutting boards.

Matt: Whoa ...

Shubh: he's got a little woodworking ability.

Matt: Yeah. Where

Shubh: were you about an hour ago when I needed somebody to...

Oh, uh, you were at the wrong building. Yeah. Uh, when I needed somebody to, to, uh... I, I sa- I found some hardwood planks in the storage room here. I was like, "Oh, maybe we should just make, like, a feature wall."

Matt: Yeah, you know what? A few, a few, okay, a few years ago, I'm not much of a woodworker, but a few years ago it came out that you're not supposed to use plastic cutting boards anymore.

Shubh: Yeah. So-

Philippe: Oh, really?

Matt: Yeah, just 'cause of the microplastics.

Philippe: Late to the memo, am I. Yeah. Good to know. Throwing-

Shubh: Oh, yeah. Uh,

Matt: Matt turned it into a- ...

Shubh: thanks. Matt'll make a- ... a cutting board

Matt: phobe ...

Shubh: Matt'll make a cutting board.

Matt: Yeah, sure. But then, you know, if you buy wood cutting boards, but they're all glued together, and you don't know what kind of oil is on top of them.

So I made a few cutting boards just that were, you know, solid maple-

Shubh: And they're

Matt: kind of

Shubh: awesome ...

Matt: with, uh, flaxseed oil on top.

Shubh: And then he, he got me oil- Solid maple ... to oil them. [00:06:00] And so, uh, 'cause, you know, wood cutting boards, sometimes you cut onions, and they, they hold the smell for a while. But when you oil them up, the smell just, uh, goes away.

And you gotta oil... We're oiling our wooden, uh, utensils, too, thanks to Matt.

Philippe: Oh. Whoa.

Matt: Whoa.

Shubh: So stop using plastic cutting boards.

Philippe: That's awesome. Yeah.

Shubh: That's our pitch.

Philippe: What, uh, what else are you doing? 'Cause I think I need to know more about microplastics in general. What else do you do to close

Shubh: that? Oh, Matt, Matt is your guy.

Matt: Oh, I don't know. You know what? I read this f- I read this book a while ago, um, called Fast Food Genocide by, uh, Joel Fuhrman.

Philippe: Okay.

Matt: And it kind of completely changed the way I'm, I'm eating and, uh, yeah, avoid all additives in foods if I can. And like- Yeah ... with, you know-

Shubh: Good for you, buddy ... I

Matt: keep that out of all of the Eats foods as well.

Shubh: Your buddy Abdul, who you introed me to- Yeah ... and came on, he is not avoiding the fast foods 'cause he sent us 50 McDonald's cheeseburgers.

Philippe: Into this hot room right here?

Shubh: Yeah, that's right. Yeah. Yeah. And actually, this room, since we moved some stuff out of here, is not as hot- Wow ... as it was.

Philippe: [00:07:00] Wow. Yeah, exactly.

And it's even more beautiful with all the work that you've done.

Shubh: Okay, but real talk. I know I'm not trying to toot my own horn here, but based on how it looked two hours ago-

Philippe: It's great ...

Shubh: and how it looks on camera now, again- Good work ... what the rest of it looks like, let's, uh-

Matt: Is, is it safe to eat food in here?

Philippe: Well, and not if you care about microplastics.

Shubh: Uh, well, uh, no, yes. When I got these drop cloths from Dollarama, uh, I probably just basically breathed in all of the chemicals. Yeah.

Matt: Yeah, yeah. And Abdul, he's funny. Um, yeah, you know, I'm actually, I'm honored to be here for many reasons.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: Um, but, you know, two of them, I'm honored to be on the same comedy podcast as Ab- Abdul Shahada-

Shubh: Yeah

Matt: who is an absolute unit of a comedian.

Shubh: Yeah. He's so funny. He was just on The Debaters again last week. Somebody texted

Matt: me.

Shubh: Amazing. Yeah.

Matt: And oh, the second reason, I, I'm also honored to be on the same business podcast as, uh, Kelly Schmidt, who seems to be an- Yes Yeah ... executive.

Shubh: [00:08:00] Yes, that's

Matt: true. Yeah,

Shubh: you were on...

That's right, you were- Yeah ... you're, you're rubbing, uh, um, uh-

Matt: Yeah ...

Shubh: uh, virtual shoulders.

Matt: Yes.

Shubh: Um, I noticed he didn't say he was honored to be on the same podcast that either of us is on. Yeah. Did you notice that? I was kind of wait- Off camera. I kind of wait- I was waiting for off camera ... but Matt, you are a bit of a, um, is it fair for me to say you're a bit of a business on- you're a Business Online super fan?

Matt: Well, I've listened to all of them. I've been-

Shubh: Listens to all of them. Whoa. Yeah. He, he texts me little, like, uh, f- feedback notes Uh, do you feel like we've been hitting our stride lately?

Matt: Yeah, absolutely.

Shubh: Yeah, I feel like it's

Matt: been a journey. When... What, what's your favorite episode?

Shubh: Oh, yeah. What's... Uh, other than our bills.

Matt: Oh, yeah. This is great. Maybe my... A couple of my favorite pitches.

Shubh: Yeah. Oh, yeah. What?

Matt: Yes. Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, that. I don't think you guys reflect enough about, uh, you know, the pitches that have

Shubh: come along. Oh, yeah. Okay. That's good feedback. Um, we don't love feedback here, but that's fine. Okay. Yeah. We'll edit that out.

Matt: Yeah, you better be careful. You, you-

Shubh: Yeah, yeah, yeah ...

Matt: two more things of feedback and this episode- Yeah, yeah ... is

Shubh: not hitting the

Philippe: letter D.

Shubh: I'm gonna edit, I'm gonna edit this- Bro ... so it's like I'm honored to be on the same podcast as you guys.

Matt: That's all. That's,

Shubh: that's all. That's... [00:09:00]

Matt: My favorite pitch, I think, was the precipitation validation confirmation device.

Yeah. What? Joe Fairley. Hilarious.

Philippe: You're gonna give that more cred? I

Matt: loved it.

Shubh: Yeah, you like the- It's amazing. Yeah, okay. Yeah.

Matt: Well,

Shubh: okay. Keep

Matt: going. Okay. Yeah, I liked Arranged, and I think that was maybe you. Arranged. Oh, yeah. Yes. It was funny. I'm

Philippe: still

Matt: trying to think. I really like the, the, uh- Now you're panicking

the idea of... No. I really like the idea of real time sending people food if it's not working out, or gifts. Yeah, yeah.

Shubh: Yeah, that is a good idea. Yeah. The Hunger Games idea. Yeah. Yeah, that's a great idea actually.

Matt: Yeah. Um, Mark Dilayne, you guys were kind of brainstorming that pet idea.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: And one of you guys came up with the, um, the podcast for pets.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: And I

Shubh: thought that was- I think it was like we, we, we kind of, we arrived at that together.

Philippe: Mind meld.

Matt: Yeah, yeah.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: I think a podcast for dogs. Yeah. Like, "Ruff, ruff, ruff, ruff."

Matt: Uh, well, I think that you could... I think it... I envisioned it as something you could put on all day for your dog when you're at work.

Shubh: Oh.

Matt: And you could have, you know, maybe a veterinarian would come on and talk about how, um-

Shubh: You should brush your teeth ...

Matt: what it feels like to get your dewclaws [00:10:00] removed maybe.

Shubh: Oh,

Matt: yeah. And the, the...

Shubh: I don't know what those are.

Matt: Like the, the... Dogs... I don't really either. The, the dogs have some claws that they don't need in the back of their-

Shubh: Oh

Matt: leg, and they have to get removed sometimes.

Shubh: Like wisdom teeth. Yeah.

Matt: Yeah, yeah, yeah. All

Shubh: right.

Matt: Yeah, for dogs.

Shubh: I didn't know anything. We're getting a dog

Matt: at some point here. Well, you should listen to the Dogcast.

Shubh: Yeah. I should listen to the Dogcast?

Matt: The Dog- And then maybe bird sounds, like, through the day, like-

Shubh: Wouldn't that wind them up?

Matt: Well, I don't know. I... You know, I heard that, um, I heard that humans and maybe other mammals, um, are genetically kind of inclined to feel calm in front of bird sounds. Um- Okay ... because that- Can I- ... because that says that , um, there's no pred- uh, uh, indicates to them that there's no predators in the area.

Shubh: Can I, can I jump in here for a second?

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: Sounds I fucking hate birds. I hate the sounds they make. A little. I hate the way they move around in the world. Uh, I hate how they're into my garbage. Oh, you do? I hate how they're outside my window. I thought you were

Philippe: terrified of birds

Shubh: though. I'm a little scared of some birds. I've had some incidents with birds, bird related incidents.

One day we'll get into that. So, um, I... Oh, the [00:11:00] chirping of birds and calming you down. Nope, not for me.

Philippe: Sorry. So why would you say... But hates is a much different word than how you really feel, which is terribly frightful.

Shubh: No, I, I... But you can hate something you're scared of. Right? Because, like, isn't that where hatred comes from?

Fear?

Philippe: That's true. That's true.

Shubh: I was gonna make a social commentary, but I packed it in. Uh, okay, so Matt, I wanna first say I very much appreciate your patience given that we started 30 minutes behind schedule, but also an hour after you arrived at the wrong location. Um, I wanna say how much, uh, I've appreciated, uh, how you have, many times, helped us out, uh, starting with, uh, uh, picking up a mattress with me one time at Costco through to making cutting boards through to randomly dropping off food.

Um, Matt's a good dude. That's all I'm gonna say.

Philippe: It's great to have you on the pod,

Shubh: man. I'm honored to be on the same podcast as Matt Morrison.

Philippe: Would that have been so hard?

Shubh: Yeah. That's all you had to say, Matt. Thanks, [00:12:00] man. That's all you fucking had to say. Thanks, man. This is why I needed to be in the studio so I could raise my voice.

Yeah. If I was out in the conference room, I would've felt, you know-

Philippe: Right ...

Shubh: I would've felt bad about it.

Philippe: Did you... Was it, was it a, a... W- When they had taken out what was in this room before, I noticed that there was a big hole in the wall there.

Shubh: There is a hole in the wall, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I realize everybody can hear everything we're saying.

Yeah, yeah. In all those parts we're like, "Oh, no one's gonna hear this. We're just- Yeah ... we're just- We're just

Philippe: in a closet ... we're

Matt: just

Shubh: chitchatting. Uh- No,

Philippe: there's a spy hole.

Shubh: There is a hole right in the wall behind you. Um, before we get onward, uh- Yeah ... well, you know what? We'll cover this another time. I was gonna say, Philippe, we need a bit of a download from your European vacation, but, uh, we'll get that, uh, we'll get that on the flip side.

Matt: All

Philippe: right. I

Shubh: wanna make sure we get- It's g- it looked good though ... w- we wanna get, make sure we get Matt out of here on time.

Matt: Do you want me to introduce myself or anything? No?

Shubh: Uh, yeah, Matt, any- We did that already? Well, I kinda feel like we did- Yeah ... uh, I mean, I feel like I'm getting a lot of feedback about how to do a podcast.

Philippe: Oh. Yeah. Yikes, I am s- What, what, what do you think we're missing?

Shubh: Yeah. What, what, what w- This is the thing I never wanted ... how would you have... How would you have int- This is- [00:13:00] How would- I'm sorry. This is everything I've ever wanted ... how would you have introduced yourself- Got it ... in a way that was different that we, we did?

I mean, I just said very nice things about you.

Matt: You did. I, I'm introduced. It's, uh-

Shubh: No, no. Uh, uh, uh, welcome to the podcast, Matt Morrison.

Matt: Thank you.

Shubh: Canucks fan.

Matt: That's what I was waiting for.

Shubh: Yeah.

Philippe: Canucks fan, Raptors fan.

Shubh: Yep.

Matt: Blue Jays fan. Blue

Shubh: Jays.

Matt: Formula

Philippe: One?

Matt: No.

Philippe: Okay.

Matt: No, only when they're in the playoffs.

Jump on the bandwagon. I only j- I thought you

Shubh: meant only when the cars are in the

Matt: playoffs. Oh, yeah, that too.

Shubh: Yeah. Hi, everybody. It's Shubh here. Are you a startup founder or a scale-up exec that's trying to take your company to the next level? Are you looking for the right people to help you do it? Are you looking for people who will help you set culture, who have deep domain expertise, who can figure anything out, who are Swiss Army Knives and unicorns?

How are you finding those people? Are you juggling multiple job boards? Are you screening hundreds of resumes, doing dozens of interviews? Is it working? I bet it's not. [00:14:00] Are you frustrated? I bet you are. Do you know how I know that? Because once upon a time, I was you. Then I discovered the New Network.

Jennifer Wiens and her team at the New Network help Canadian tech companies build and scale high-performance teams through a proven unique approach to recruitment and executive search. Also, they're awesome. I used them to help build most of my team at ZayZoon, and I would use them again, and I've recommended them to everyone that I know.

Check out newnetwork.ca for more details. The New Network: I couldn't have done it without them.

Philippe: Yeah. All right, buddy. Uh, you said you have six pitches.

Shubh: You have lined computer m- printed ideas on a piece of paper. I just

Matt: have some notes here. Is that... Is that okay? Is that acceptable?

Shubh: It's incredible.

Matt: Is that what people do?

Shubh: Uh, there's been a couple people who've been that well prepared. Yeah. Yeah.

Matt: Oh, well, I don't know if I'm well prepared.

Shubh: It's, uh, it's always a little jarring when the guest is 1,000 times more prepared than we've ever been for an episode. We [00:15:00] at one point, remember early on, we would exchange notes about how, what we would do in the intro and stuff.

Philippe: Yeah. I've never once looked up a guest that we're about

Shubh: to have. Yeah, yeah.

Philippe: Just show up into the room.

Shubh: That, but people often say, "Do you want..." You know, you were like, "Hey, do you want me to run your idea by you?" And I don't want you to- Yeah ... because I like to be surprised. You didn't, you didn't know. Yeah, it's good.

But also, that's more work for me, too, right?

Matt: Right.

Shubh: So it's kind of a, a double-edged- Yeah ... sword. All

Philippe: right, six pitches.

Matt: Let's go, Matty.

Philippe: I l- I love Mark Loudain.

Shubh: Yeah. I want you to,

Matt: I want you to

Philippe: step it-

Shubh: I feel like Mark

Matt: Loudain really raised the bar.

Philippe: He really did. Like, that

Shubh: was incredible.

Philippe: His brain

Shubh: works in a

Philippe: different way.

Yeah,

Shubh: yeah, yeah.

Matt: 10 incredible ideas.

Shubh: Uh, then Andrew came on right after. Andrew was good, too.

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: Just kidding. It was a lot of fun with Andrew- Yeah ... but his pitches weren't as good, though.

Philippe: His pitches weren't- It was a lot of fun ... although he did sh- he did send us a photo today, I don't know if you saw that, of, uh, he just spilled on himself and he was like, "Oh, God."

Shubh: I didn't see it because, uh, my phone was on the other side of this podcast studio while I was renovating it. Yeah. Uh, okay, Matt.

Matt: Yeah, yeah. Okay. Here's the, the [00:16:00] first, first idea here.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: This actually first idea stems from, um, one of your ideas, uh, Pip's Lips. Yes. Yeah, yeah.

Shubh: I, okay. I just don't love how you're just- Hey, Andrew, I love my range

pitching it back. I love Pip's Lips.

Matt: I did say I love it. I did say I love it. Oh,

Shubh: okay.

Matt: It's all right. Okay. I did like it. Uh, you know- ... I thought it was a good idea, but I think the, the problem with it, um, there, you know,

Philippe: this

Matt: is- I, I like the idea that there's, there's two- What we call,

Shubh: this is what we call sandwich criticism

Matt: I like the idea that there's too few, um, uh, male lip product ideas out there. Yeah. Or products out there. Um, but I was feeling that perhaps, um, you need to kind of shift the, uh, the, I don't know, the target market to more blue collar. Okay. Because I feel like Pip's Lips, it sounds a bit kind of like for the white collar- Yeah

office worker or-

Shubh: Right. Yeah, like you.

Matt: Yep. Yeah.

Shubh: Yeah. Okay, let's hit it.

Matt: Yeah. Um, so I think that, I think that that shift would kind of maybe open up, um, an opportunity to reach, you know, the maybe, um, [00:17:00] blue collar, um, workers. A, a

Shubh: wider demographic.

Matt: Wider demographic. Yep. Maybe he'd get it into the, you know, the, the big box outdoor stores.

Shubh: Oh, like a Bass Pro Shop?

Matt: Exactly. Exactly. Shout out the,

Shubh: the sponsors.

Matt: Yeah. So how, how do we make the change?

Shubh: Do you

Matt: just call it Trevor's Lips? Something called Man Chap. Oh. You know, Man Chap.

Shubh: Uh, it's like Chapman, but Man Chap. Wait, is that where Chapman comes from? No, anyway, k- keep going. Yeah,

Matt: I think Man Chap is what you're looking for.

Shubh: Man Chap.

Matt: Yeah, some of the scents that would be available would be, um, like beer and gun smoke. Oh. Or, like, maybe smoked salmon.

Philippe: Smoked salmon.

Matt: Or smoked elk.

Philippe: Smoked elk is good. Yeah,

Matt: yeah, yeah.

Philippe: Yeah.

Matt: Yeah.

Philippe: Just like- Yeah ... just like gasoline.

Shubh: Smoked salmon- I think

Matt: gasoline is a nice idea ... smoked

Shubh: salmon, uh, uh, scented anything would not-

I don't think would be right.

Philippe: Oh. I've actually- I love smoked salmon ... I,

Matt: I, I love it, too.

Shubh: Yeah, but do you like smelling it? Yeah. On a person? On your lips. Mm. On their mouth?

Philippe: It depends. If we've just [00:18:00] had remarkable bagels and, uh- Yeah.

Matt: Yeah.

Philippe: Yeah ... and we're just so inspired- All right ... with the position. So, so

Shubh: Man Chap.

Yeah. You've

Matt: rebranded Pip. So I've actually made a few prototypes for you guys to try. No. And I have them with me right now. Get out of here. I don't know if you can reach them, Shubh, from across?

Philippe: Oh my God, throw them over here. Are they

Matt: scented? Well, I'm not gonna throw them.

Shubh: Here's- Hold on. Hold on. I, I can get up.

I can get up.

Matt: All right.

Shubh: This is crazy. You made these? Whoa.

Matt: Yeah. This is unbelievable. As, as you can see that the, the tube is, is maybe twice the girth of a, a normal- ... tube of, of lip gloss. Look

Shubh: at this tube. Look at this tube. Look at this

Matt: tube. Yeah, camo. It's huge ... they're camo colored, which, uh-

Shubh: Man

Philippe: Chap. And hold on,

Shubh: you legitimately made a smoked elk flavor?

Matt: Yeah.

Philippe: And, and beer and gun smoke. Can I,

Matt: can I- Can we open these guys? The beer and... Yeah, of course. Try them out. The beer and gun smoke is, um, is maybe the, the flagship scent.

Shubh: Holy crap, the smoked elk smells incredible.

Matt: Yeah. The beer and gun smoke is the flagship scent. Um, but yeah, yeah. See what you think of those.

Oh, man. It's 100% natural. There's just essential oils. The [00:19:00]

Shubh: beer and gun smoke. Did you make these,

Matt: Chaz? I did. I did make them up myself. Which, which, which do you have? He's made these. I made these- He made these from scratch ... from start to finish. I made them from scratch with beeswax- Wait, wait- ... shea butter

Shubh: what are y- what are your flavors?

Matt: The same. Same, same. Same, same. Smoked elk. Two.

Shubh: Matt, these are legitimately, like-

Philippe: Well, this one smells disgusting.

Matt: It is. It is. Wait, so that one- It smells disgusting. It ta- it... I take pause when I smell that.

Philippe: Yeah.

Matt: Yeah. You know, my buddy Dave just- Beer and

Philippe: gun smoke ...

Matt: my buddy Dave just smelled one of those, um, the beer and gun smoke, and then the first comment he made was, "I'd like to shower in this scent."

Philippe: He would like to shower in it?

Matt: Yeah. So-

Philippe: To, like, get it off?

Matt: So, no. He wants, he wants in there. He wants to smell like it. He wants in there, and I- Oh, wow ... so I think, yeah.

Philippe: It smells like I'm inside the barrel of a gun.

Matt: Yes. That's the,

Shubh: that's- Yeah ... that's,

Matt: that's- I think- ...

Shubh: the slogan, bro.

Matt: So I think, I think, you know, I think, uh growth strategy, the first growth strategy would probably be product expansion into body wash Wait, can

Shubh: you- Yeah ... you're just holding on. Yeah.

Matt: You're

Shubh: g- you've just very briefly [00:20:00] moved past the fact that you actually have made these.

Philippe: Am I allowed to put this on my

Matt: lips?

Of course. Yeah, they're, they're, yeah.

Shubh: You have made this from scratch. This is beeswax. You don't have to give us the full formula. What else

Matt: is in this? It's buttery. Beeswax, shea butter, uh, some oils, like, uh- Did

Philippe: you make it or you went to a place

Matt: and- I poured it. I made it. It's very easy. He made it- Whoa

in his,

Shubh: in his house.

Matt: I melted it. I melted them and poured them in my h- home.

Philippe: That's incredible.

Matt: Yeah. Oh, you gotta try it. It's just oils. Essential oils. You gotta put it on your lips. Just plants.

Shubh: I'm gonna, I'm

Matt: gonna put some- There's no actual elk meat in there. Okay. It's just plants. So it's, it's

Shubh: vegan?

Matt: It's just, like, essential oils.

Philippe: Vegan smoked elk smell. Yeah,

Matt: yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.

Philippe: And what was the inspiration for the smell? It's like ...

Matt: I don't know what the ins- it just came to me. I was gonna make... Yeah, I was gonna, I, you know what? I tried to make a smoked salmon, uh, one and it tasted like, it smelled like shit.

Shubh: Yeah, I should-

Matt: It's awful.

Shubh: It's awful ... hope I'm not allergic to beeswax. Uh, this is crazy. You made this? I still can't get over

Matt: this. I did. Can...

Shubh: I actually- Yeah, man ... I'm coming around I'm coming around on the beer and gun smoke flavor.

Matt: Yes, it is, it is nice. I prefer the smoked elk. Okay, [00:21:00] interesting. I got one of my

Philippe: top lip- Interesting stuff

and my bottom lip going on different flavors now.

Matt: Yeah, it's hard to-

Shubh: Well, you got, your bottom lip- It's hard

Matt: to mix them ...

Shubh: you got a bottom lip and a sliver is what you're- You got one lip.

Philippe: Yeah, I got, yeah, one bottom

Shubh: lip. Matt, this is unreal.

Philippe: Good. This is-

Shubh: And

Philippe: the matchup ...

Shubh: crazy.

Philippe: Matchup, the logo is just p- so perfect.

Shubh: And it's- The- ... the beer and gun smoke one has, is like a camouflage.

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: And the elk is like, it has like a, a, a-

Philippe: It's also

Matt: camouflage ...

Shubh: Oh, that's camouflagey? Oh.

Matt: Yeah. Yeah, different kinds of camouflage. Well, I thought

Shubh: it had some footprints on

Matt: it. Diff- different types of camo.

Shubh: This is unbelievable.

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: This is incredible.

Now I've used one of them, so I can't give them back to you.

Matt: No, they're for you. Um- They're for

Shubh: us?

Matt: Yeah. Th- you know, because of the camo, they could be, could get some defense contracts. Made

Shubh: these from

Matt: scratch. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Shubh: I think this is like- Can you put a wick in these and use them as a candle in an emergency?

Matt: I suppose you could. Uh, maybe. I don't know.

Philippe: The, so this is, this is- Light ...

Matt: dual use.

Philippe: Do you have a lighter? This is dual use. The government is funding anything with camo on it, I think these days. Yeah, that's right. These

Matt: days. Defense tech. They'll pick that up.

Philippe: Yeah. Defense tech. [00:22:00] There's like 200, there's $200 billion towards, uh, uh, things that say- Yeah

gun smoke on them. That's right. So- Listen,

Shubh: I know it's not entirely our target demographic, but if we take these bad boys, the beer and gun smoke ones- Mm-hmm ... down to-

Philippe: Mm-hmm ...

Shubh: uh, you know, maybe an NRA show.

Matt: Yeah, exactly.

Philippe: Right. Exactly.

Shubh: I think it might clean up.

Matt: Um, yeah.

Philippe: I mean, I'm always, you know... Yeah, I'll take this down to the- I'll let start you-

construction guys ... you can't smoke.

Shubh: Not you. Yeah. That's not gonna work. Yeah, yeah. I'll put

Philippe: my Carharts on

Shubh: and I'll go down- Yeah, Matt, Matt can go. There's

Matt: lo-

Shubh: Matt's actually worked with- There, I

Matt: mean, there's lots of use cases for this that, uh, we could walk through or you could probably think of. Dude, that's unbelievable.

That is- I love-

Shubh: Actually, I cannot believe you made these.

Matt: Uh,

Shubh: okay. Well, would you wanna score this one? 'Cause he's got five more ideas.

Philippe: This is great. This is, uh, such a great iteration on pips lips. I think of like let's take this untapped market- Yeah ... and instead of-

Shubh: And he fucking made 'em. He made them.

Philippe: I know, I know.

This is cool. So, so to me, I think th- this is awesome. And the smells [00:23:00] are, are good. Like-

Shubh: They're c- they're, the smoked elk was really good, and the beer and gun smoke I'm coming around on. And the other thing I like about them is I'm always losing my lip chap. Mm. 'Cause it's super tiny I'm never gonna lose this

Philippe: Yeah.

You, you almost like, you almost need a holster for these things. I think

Matt: so. You need

Shubh: a holster. Oh my God. Yeah. No, you need a bandolier. You need that little thing with the- ... where, where the shotgun shells go in. Mm-hmm.

Philippe: Mm-hmm.

Shubh: Oh my God. Actually, you could probably just use a regular one and load it up.

Philippe: That would be so sick.

Like, instead of Hailey Bieber with her, uh, her lipstick on the back of a phone case- We just get- ... this is like the new men's version. Yeah ... we just

Shubh: get Phil on the cover of GQ topless with just the bandolier. Yeah.

Philippe: Yeah.

Shubh: That would... This is unbelievable. Uh, what do you got?

Philippe: I, I'm gonna start you off on the right foot.

This is a 75. 75. Wow. Thank you,

Matt: Raul.

Shubh: It's a 75. If you make the product from scratch and you come in 75 Celsius, you've got a, you've got a, a captive audience, I think. Uh, yeah. It's organic [00:24:00]

Matt: The gross margins are quite high on lip, lip products.

Philippe: Are they?

Matt: Yeah.

Philippe: How much does it cost you to make one of these?

Matt: Pennies on the dollar. Wow.

Shubh: Huh.

Philippe: And you're gonna sell them for, like, 10 bucks,

Matt: aren't you? Yeah, probably. Woo.

Shubh: Okay, keep going, Matty. Okay. Okay. That's, uh, uh, I don't, uh, I don't even know what's coming up next. If that's what you started with, what's possibly gonna happen after this?

Matt: Okay, you want me to second idea you?

You ready for a second idea?

Shubh: I, I think so.

Matt: Yeah. Okay. Um, personally, you know, in terms of lip balm, I almost never use it.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: Uh, you know, so I mean, uh, since I made these, I use it all the time.

Shubh: Right. Um- What, what's your, what's your, what's your go-to flavor?

Matt: Oh, the beer and gunsmoke every time.

Shubh: Hey, hold on a sec.

What does your wife think about this when it's on? That's a, that's a question I forgot to ask.

Matt: Oh, yeah, well, well, I mean, a use case I was thinking of.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: You're making

Philippe: out?

Matt: Yeah, well, exactly. So say, say you're going on a... You say, Philippe, perhaps you're on a date with someone- Yeah, yeah ... at this restaurant.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: And maybe you had your appetizer, and maybe you had a, it was beef carpaccio or something, and your, your breath- ... is terrible. Right,

Shubh: yeah.

Matt: All of a [00:25:00] sudden, the girl you're with wants to kiss you.

Shubh: Right.

Matt: Yeah. And y- your breath is awful. You need to buy yourself some time.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: So you just, you pull out some, some smoked elk-

Shubh: Yeah

Matt: um, lip balm. Big thick layer on your lips.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: She's gonna see that, and she's gonna, she's gonna pause. It'll buy you an hour to go brush your teeth. Oh,

Shubh: because she's-

Matt: She'll,

Shubh: she's- ... she's not gonna wanna kiss the smoked elk.

Matt: Exactly.

Shubh: Okay. Oh, she'll do nothing now. So I think that was a long-

Matt: Yeah, to, to delay it, right- Yeah

so that you can brush your teeth.

Shubh: That was a roundabout way of you saying, so, you know, maybe he doesn't love, love the...

Matt: Does not,

Philippe: does not like. Does- But- ... I don't know, maybe there's, like, a primal instinct that- Oh ... you're tapping into of, like- Ah ... "When I made out, his lips smelt like, tasted like elk." Yeah.

Matt: Yeah.

Philippe: Like- Yeah, yeah, yeah ... like, it's almost like he was suckling on the blood of an elk earlier today. Yeah. You know? Yeah,

Matt: that's right.

Philippe: And, like, adding some, some level of manhood. I don't know. Uh, yeah, d- don't get me wrong, these are not the type of women that I'm interacting with who, who, who want this, but, um- Are there a

Shubh: lot of women that are like- You never

Matt: know ... "That guy

Shubh: just chewed a live elk"?

Philippe: I, there might be, you know... I think the [00:26:00] target demo of Man Chap, maybe the women they're interacting with- Yeah

are, are pretty keen.

Shubh: Well, I like the idea that it's also a, it buys you a little time, right?

Matt: Yeah, yeah.

Shubh: Okay. Idea two. Sorry.

Matt: Okay,

Shubh: sure. I, I Sure.

Matt: Cut you off. So yeah. Yeah, I personally never use lip chap. Yeah. And I never know personally where to, when to put it on.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: And I, you know, I, I don't wanna waste it.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: I don't wanna put it on if I don't have to. Yeah. Right? So- What solves that is the, uh, the lip balm application fa- verification confirmation device.

Shubh: Wow.

Matt: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. It'll take care of that.

Shubh: So what does it do?

Matt: Well, uh, it's gonna leverage existing, um, the ex- exterior housing- Yeah ... and the mechanical architecture of decommissioned panoramic dental imaging machines.

Shubh: Yep.

Matt: Um, do you know what those

Shubh: are? Yeah, panoramic dental machines? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I mean, I, I know what they are.

Matt: Yeah. Do, do you feel-

Shubh: Um- They're the things that they, they, they just move around you. Take the

Matt: X-ray stand and- Yeah, and you have to

Philippe: go with the really uncomfortable thing in your mouth,

Matt: right?

Yeah, never mind. They, they... Yeah, it's like a bite plate or something, right? Bite plate. So you sta- you go to the den- dentist and- Or,

Shubh: [00:27:00] or you could just stick one of these lip chaps in your mouth.

Matt: No.

Shubh: Yep.

Matt: That's

Shubh: right. Yep. Oh, no, 'cause of the plastic shell. Yeah. Don't do that.

Matt: Um, yeah, I mean, using de- decommissioned machines will significantly reduce the startup, um, costs.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: Right? But so you, you stand, uh, obviously as you would in the dentist office, right? Yeah. You stand, um- Yeah ... in front of it and, and bite down. So you're not gonna be biting down on a bite plate. It would be, you know, maybe some kind of, um, specialty moisture, um, sens- sensor or something. Yep. Some... Yeah.

And then instead of the, the camera arm that swings around your head-

Shubh: Yeah ...

Matt: that'll just be repurposed into a timer.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: So you, you press... You don't bite anywhere. You, you put, press your lips against it, right? Yeah. So you push your lips against it.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: Wait for the, the rotation of the camera.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: And then, then the machine will perform a verification analysis-

Shubh: Yeah

Matt: followed by, uh, a conf- then it'll give you a confirmation output.

Shubh: Yep.

Matt: Um, and it'll, it'll describe whether, you know, the, the hydration of your lips is within [00:28:00] optimal range.

Philippe: So this is... Just to clarify, this is, um, a device that tells you how, how moist your lips are in order... if it's a good time to reapply or not?

Matt: Apply or do not apply. Yeah,

Philippe: okay.

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: Um- Yeah ... what if you just licked your lips?

Matt: I don't, I think they dry out if you lick them right.

Shubh: No, but to check, like yeah. No.

Philippe: It is true, sometimes you're like, "Am I over applying? Like, it seems like I'm putting them on a lot."

Matt: Yeah.

Philippe: Uh, versus, uh, yeah, I could see why there would be a need.

I mean, I, it seems like a, a really big you know, investment. What about,

Shubh: what about... Yeah, it does feel like a lot. What about just a phone that a picture, takes a picture and then- Mm-hmm ... the app tells you?

Matt: Yeah, you don't get the, you don't get anything, um, the information that that will provide you. It's

Shubh: not, it's not detailed enough?

Matt: No.

Shubh: Okay. Um, uh, you wanna, you wanna rate this one?

Matt: I mean,

Shubh: I mean, peaks and valleys is kind of what I would say. Like, you started pretty high and

Philippe: went back- Well, I think any time, any time you [00:29:00] like try and build off a Joe Fairley idea, like- Yeah, yeah, yeah ... like, yeah. This is, this is a note to Joe. This is definitely a note to Joe.

Joe, this is with my love. I loved his pitch, and this is a note to him.

Shubh: There's nowhere to go.

Philippe: And, and just like I named Joe for this

Shubh: idea- And that pitch, that pitch legitimately made Philippe angry in the room.

Philippe: Yeah. So. Exactly. That's what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And you know, when you're trying to take it, you, when you're, when you're...

An ode to, to my opinion, the worst pitch ever on this podcast- Oh, oh, oh no ...

Matt: I'm gonna, I'm gonna- That's not gonna bode well for me ...

Philippe: I'm gonna go peaks and valleys for you.

Matt: Yeah,

Philippe: yeah. Yeah, this is a zero.

Matt: Oof. Thus how,

Philippe: you know.

Matt: I'm gonna need a Rachel- We all need- I'm gonna need a Rachel Zimmer failure cake for this, this one, right?

This is a- Call her up and get one.

Shubh: I, okay, I was gonna give you a zero too, but I'm giving you 10 for an incredible callback there. Yeah. Yeah.

Matt: What's a failure cake?

Shubh: Remember when she was like, one of her business ideas was a failure cake?

Philippe: It wasn't an idea. It was a, I guess what she did at one of her current positions.

Shubh: Yeah, well, and they did it, they did it at, at one of their places. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

Philippe: To celebrate failures.

Shubh: Yeah.

Philippe: Yeah. Yeah. That was cool.

Shubh: Yeah. I just call that Wednesday. 'Cause I be eating cake and failing all the [00:30:00] time.

Philippe: Ba dum.

Shubh: Uh, go ahead. Idea three

Philippe: We're, yeah, we're moving through

Shubh: this Yeah, this is quite a-

Philippe: This is good

Shubh: You know, I just re-watched some highlights from, uh, the, uh, 2024 OHL Stanley Cup Final where they went down 3-0- Mm.

Mm ... then went up, then tied it- You watched that again? ... and then lost and gave- You watched that

Philippe: again?

Shubh: Yeah, I needed to relive that pain Because you were- And, uh, this is what this reminds me a bit of so far- Oh, I like that ... kind of like ups and downs.

Matt: I like that.

Shubh: Yeah. Yeah.

Philippe: I watched the, the Mavs' '08 run during the pandemic.

Shubh: Yeah.

Philippe: It was a great run.

Shubh: It's also... Yeah, actually, speaking of basketball, this, this, your start so far is sort of like the Knicks game last night.

Philippe: Okay.

Shubh: And hey, this is in real time almost, so- Mm ... uh, we're talking about game, Game 4.

Philippe: Game

Matt: 4, right.

Shubh: OG and, OG and an OB. I

Matt: guess we're getting close to Father's Day, aren't we?

Shubh: We are getting- Is it Father's Day? Yeah. Is, or was that- Is it getting close? Are you teeing yourself up for your next pitch?

Matt: No, I'm not. I'm not. That would've been good

Shubh: though. That would've been really good. Yeah, yeah. That would've been smart. I don't know why, why didn't you do that?

Matt: I should've.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: You know, I was just...

I wanted to mention, you know, um, you were saying that you were gonna ask Rita for, um, a helium plant, Mark Delaney's helium plant- Yeah. Yeah, that's- ... for Father's Day

Shubh: This isn't-

Matt: And I wanted to- It's incredible ... I wanted [00:31:00] to let you know that I asked Sunita for the, the same helium plant- ... for Father's Day. So if you don't get it-

Shubh: Yeah

Matt: it's likely because I did It's just like, uh, in- Wow. Yeah ... in Jingle

Shubh: All The Way when, uh, Schwarzenegger and Sinbad were fighting over the same kid's toy. How, how's that for a pull?

Matt: Wow.

Shubh: Y'all seen Jingle All The Way? Anyway, Matt, idea three?

Matt: Okay, ideal, idea three here. Um, m- my ch- my children, they, they love screens and video games.

Shubh: Sure.

Matt: I do not. Unfortunately, I do not. Right? They, I guess all kids love them, right? They love that stuff. Yeah.

Shubh: Have you guys heard about these screens that children

Matt: love? They love 'em. They love 'em. You think about this- Can't get enough of 'em. Yeah. I don't, I don't like 'em. It's like an iPod. So to solve that problem, I was kind of th- trying to think of something that maybe would appease me and them.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: Um-

Shubh: It's a book.

Matt: No, no. Yeah, ideally. But, um- You know, the, the Nintendo Wii-

Shubh: Yeah ...

Matt: video games, motion control? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. So this, this might be actually a game for the Wii, or it could be its own system. I don't know.

Shubh: Okay.

Matt: Um, but it's gonna [00:32:00] incorporate, incorporate, like, a sensor-laden shovel controller.

The shovel... Right? So-

Philippe: They're gonna send them

Matt: out- Within, within the shovel- Yeah ... housed within the, the sh- the handle of the shovel- Yeah ... is a, is an internally actually, actuated weight-

Shubh: So it's f-

Matt: Yeah ... that slides up and down.

Shubh: Simulates shoveling basically.

Matt: Exactly. Yeah. So you, when you start with it, um, the weight is actually in the hand, the top hand, in, in by your hands- Yeah

on the handle.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: But then when you walk over and you take a scoop of the virtual gravel-

Shubh: Yeah ...

Matt: or whatever other medium you want- Yeah ... uh, the weight shifts down to the bottom-

Shubh: Yeah ...

Matt: which simulates you have a load on that shovel- So it's like a- ... in the scoop ...

Shubh: you know those, uh, golf swing simulator trainers where they- Mm

have a little circle? This is that but for shoveling. Something like

Matt: that. Sure, sure, sure.

Shubh: And is this because your kids are not shoveling, or not pulling their own weight at home right

Matt: now? No, they pull their own weight, but this, this

Shubh: is just- Are they shoveling the driveway?

Matt: Sometimes. Sometimes.

Shubh: No, they're not pulling their own weight.

It's

Philippe: every time. Is this you love shoveling so much that you're like, "This is how me and my kids can bond"?

Matt: No, I just want some physical ac- You know, z- um, [00:33:00] let me just finish this and then- Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah ... we can talk

Shubh: about it.

Matt: Um, and so you, uh-

Shubh: You, you want your kids to grow up to be the, hanging around with guys who will buy the Man Chap.

Matt: No, I don't want that at all.

Shubh: Okay,

Matt: keep going. Okay, I'm keep going. Keep going. Let me keep going. Yeah,

Shubh: keep going.

Matt: Um, so then, you know, you, you pick up the load, and then the, there's motion sensors so you don't wanna... You have to walk it to the virtual dump truck or the- Yeah ... virtual truck.

Shubh: Okay.

Matt: And you can't spill it, right?

So you have to do it slowly, and then you spill it into the, you know, um, into the dump truck or the wheelbarrow, I guess. And then that, that weight, that internal weight slides right back up to your hands. Right? So it, it would absolutely feel like you had a shovel and you were- Okay ... shoveling.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: Uh, it'd be a physical, you know, nice physical activity- Activity,

Shubh: yep

Matt: um, for the kids rather than just sitting and playing, so.

Shubh: Oh, okay, now you're done?

Matt: I sp- Okay. No, are you, are you f- I'm not done. Yeah. "

Philippe: I'm not done. Let me add context."

Matt: So- And we definitely understood. Yeah,

Philippe: I, hold on. Whoa, okay. Hey, hey. Okay, so one more time. Riddle, riddle- It's like shoveling ...

Matt: riddle, riddle me this.

Riddle, riddle me this, guys, [00:34:00] okay? Would you rather your child come up after three hours from the basement- Yeah ... and say, "Hey, Dad, I'm a level seven roving dwarf"-

Shubh: Yeah ...

Matt: or would you rather them come up from the basement and say, "Hey, Dad, I just, I just moved my first yard of gravel"?

Shubh: Well, and I know that, I know you were, you were kind of just explaining it to us, but I do believe dwarves actually have to do quite a lot of picking and shoveling.

Philippe: Good point.

Shubh: Right?

Philippe: That's true. I don't know what dwarves do.

Shubh: Yeah, they mine for, uh- Yeah ... uh, mithrin, mithril.

Philippe: Ooh. Wow. Oh, well- Wow ... the dwarves of Lord of the Rings. Wow.

Shubh: Yeah. That's it. The Lord of the Rings one specifically. Do we all know that ref- That's it. Wow, that was good, guys. Uh, okay. You know what? I kinda started hating this idea, and then I kinda came around a little bit on it.

You could, you could unlock- Because- ... like advanced dwarves ... you said this wasn't a Father's Day gift idea.

Matt: Hmm.

Shubh: I think it is. Mm-hmm. "Hey, kids, learn how to shovel." And then winter comes and they've got all their shoveling muscles.

Matt: They do.

Shubh: And you're... And then, and then when they go out to shovel the walk, it doesn't feel like work to them.

Yeah. It feels like a- Game ... th- they've [00:35:00] VR-ed- It feels like a game ... they've VR-ed the, the virtual shovel.

Matt: They could definitely unlock, uh, like advanced work sites and like-

Philippe: Yeah.

Shubh: Just dig a, dig a hole. Dig the biggest hole. Yeah. Be like, "I dug the biggest hole, Dad."

Philippe: I mean, it is-

Matt: You could- ... mithril. I mean, you could scoop mithril.

Shubh: You could dig a man-made lake.

Matt: Yes.

Philippe: But maybe like, I'm, I'm thinking the application here isn't shoveling, but, uh, chopping wood.

Shubh: Oh. That works too. Chopping wood's good too.

Philippe: Like VR chopping wood. Yeah. You're in like a beautiful place and you're just like- Oh, yeah ... constant... You got a big old-

Shubh: So like a big ax.

You

Philippe: got a big ax. Big

Shubh: ax, shovel. What other, what other tools could we do this?

Philippe: Well, I'm just... No, the, to stick with the wood though, think like you're just standing in front of a big old pile of wood. No. And it takes you like three hours to chop the whole

Shubh: thing. No, you, you have to chop a redwood tree down.

Philippe: Oof. Y- okay.

Shubh: So that, it, that's... You just, that's a, a year, a year of chopping. No, it would take- 'Cause you would never do that in real life ...

Philippe: a lot to take that long.

Shubh: You don't think it would take that long to chop a [00:36:00] redwood tree down with by hand?

Philippe: Uh, they are really big, but- ...

Shubh: I mean- How long would it take a child to do that?

Philippe: Well, you know, yeah, okay. But-

Shubh: A kid comes up with their heads all blistered from chopping wood. Oh,

Matt: no.

Shubh: Uh, I first, Matt, I not gonna lie, I was like, "This is a bad idea."

Philippe: Okay.

Shubh: I have really- Uh, I thought you were digging yourself a hole-

Philippe: Mm ...

Shubh: but in fact, you were digging yourself a, a mountain you were climbing.

Philippe: Right.

Shubh: I'm a 50 out of 75 on the vir- Wow ... on the virtual shovel. And, and because of the ax. Uh, they've gotta be both. Yeah. Yeah. Like, there's, well, they're different tool sets. Yeah. Well, Tonka went out of business. Maybe Tonka could come back.

Philippe: Is this VR, you think? Or, or you're watching on a-

Matt: I think you're watching.

I think you're watching. That makes so

Philippe: much more sense. I need 20 million.

Shubh: This whole... I, I lo- I mean, this is a fucking, this is a really good idea, Matt.

Philippe: [00:37:00] Uh, uh, I disagree. I, uh, I-

Shubh: It's okay. We can have different opinions.

Philippe: I just think

Shubh: that- I mean, Matt loved all your ideas and didn't mention one of mine, so- But I-

people can have different opinions about things ...

Philippe: that's right. For example, the, when you said, like, would you rather your son or daughter- Um,

Shubh: watch do, do, do the dwarf thing?

Philippe: Do the dwarf thing or the- Yeah ... the, the- You choose

Shubh: dwarf?

Philippe: I would choose dwarf. I'm like- Yeah, okay ... "Are they sick? What does that mean?"

All right. Okay. You must have, like, learned some skills and, like, you know- Maybe, yeah ... versus, like, shoveling. It's like go outside. You know, go actually do it. Yeah, this,

Shubh: this... But you're

Philippe: talking- I'll get you a blue collar job right

Shubh: now ... you're, you're talking like a guy who lives in a condo. Right? You got a yard and a, and a driveway.

I need shoveling done all the time. I wanna do some landscaping work. I'm like, "Ah, dig this whole thing up by myself? What if my kids had massive shoveling muscles?" Yeah.

Philippe: Yeah.

Shubh: Okay. But you can, you can give it your score now.

Philippe: Yeah, I think this is a, a 10 sauce idea for me. Okay.

Shubh: Ridiculous.

Philippe: That's it.

Shubh: Ridiculous. Don't let him get to you, Matt. 50. 50 versus 10, that might be our widest spread ever, [00:38:00] actually.

Philippe: Maybe.

Shubh: We're gonna re-pitch that to Phil in a few, in a few years when he's got some kids.

Matt: Yeah. Good idea. Good idea.

Shubh: Uh, yeah.

Matt: Or- Yeah ...

Shubh: idea four.

Matt: Idea four. Okay. Uh, my seven-year-old daughter-

Shubh: Yep ...

Matt: really likes jam.

She likes jam so much.

Shubh: Well, I'm sorry. Like jam- Jam ...

Matt: like the- J- A ... the

Shubh: spread?

Matt: The spread. Okay. Loves it.

Shubh: Not NBA Jam?

Matt: Oh, no. The other jam.

Shubh: Yep. Okay.

Matt: Yeah. Um, she likes, she likes every flavor of jam. Uh, all of them. So when I go to the- Wait,

Shubh: wait. Now, why d- can we list some jam flavors? Uh, you looked like you were about to li- list some jam flavors, and then you kind of, you, you backed off.

Matt: No, when I go to the grocery store- Yeah ... I, I-

Shubh: Strawberry?

Matt: I stare at all the jam.

Shubh: What's her favorite jam?

Matt: She doesn't have... She likes them all. Do

Shubh: you... Uh, is marma- It's a problem ... is marmalade jam?

Matt: Oh, yeah. I think so. I like it.

Shubh: Yeah? It's

Matt: really good. Yeah.

Shubh: It's just orange jam, right?

Matt: And it's got orange peel in it, so it's nice and sweet.

Shubh: Hmm.

Matt: It's quite nice.

Shubh: What's an unusual jam that your daughter might like?

Matt: Apple butter? Rhubarb. Rhubarb.

Shubh: Oh.

Matt: Nice [00:39:00] rhubarb

Shubh: Rhubarb? But it's gotta have strawberry in it, though.

Matt: Sometimes. Does she like Vegemite? No.

Shubh: It's not a jam. I don't-

Matt: No, I never, she's never had it ... bread. And I doubt she'd like it. That stuff's-

Shubh: So jams, they gotta be sweet, right?

Matt: So gross.

Shubh: Jam, jam is sweet. Why Meghan Markle started calling things jams, and then she couldn't, wasn't allowed to call them. She had to call them preserves. What is the difference- I don't know ... between jams and preserves?

Matt: No idea.

Shubh: Huh.

Matt: All I know is I get to the grocery store, I look at all of the jams.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: And I have no idea which one's, which one to buy.

Shubh: Yep.

Shubh: Yeah, let's go.

Philippe: We've done it before, though.

Shubh: Have we? I don't think we've ever been late for something.

Shubh: Yep.

Matt: You have to keep them plugged in.

Yeah. They're always drawing power while they're running.

Shubh: Yeah, it's

Matt: true. And then they take up space. You have to store them for most of the year.

Shubh: Yeah, and they are engineered to fail, so you have to keep buying them.

Matt: Ooh, yeah.

Shubh: Yeah.

Philippe: Oh my God, what are you gonna pitch, a ceramic massive Santa Claus?

Matt: Well, the problem is my, my son loves holiday inflatables.

Okay. He loves them.

Shubh: Yeah. [00:45:00]

Shubh: because- ...

Matt: I refuse to buy them ...

Shubh: they're visually-

Matt: Oh,

Shubh: yeah ... they're a joy. He loves them. They do actually bring me joy. Do

Matt: you have some?

Shubh: We got a, we've had this Halloween cat since Ash- Mm ... was one, and it moves- Mm ... its head side to side, so it uses even more power, you know?

Matt: Right, yeah.

Shubh: Uh.

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: And it's got little lights in it.

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: It's awesome. I should send you guys a video.

Philippe: Sorry.

Matt: It is pretty awesome. Yeah, I mean,

Shubh: but also, yes, they're really bad. So

Matt: I, I tried to think of, of, of maybe some inflatable that I might, that might, you know, uh, spark me to, to buy one, and- Yep ... my thought was there, there is one holiday in the year that I never think that I do enough.

Shubh: Thanksgiving

Matt: Remembrance Day.

Shubh: Oh.

Matt: I always, I buy a poppy- Well ... I watch the ceremony- Yeah ... and that's it. And I wish there was more I could do. So my idea is, is- We're

Shubh: about to get in a lot of trouble.

Matt: Why? My, my idea is, uh, Remembrance Day inflatables.

Shubh: Okay.

Matt: Um, so then I was kind of thinking about what that should look like.

And then, so part, part of the, um, part of the proceeds- Yeah ... a large [00:46:00] portion of the proceeds would go to veterans.

Shubh: So I think a big pop, a couple pop, like poppies.

Philippe: This is a great way to pitch an idea to make sure you have a high school idea. Yeah, that's

Shubh: right. What do you... Yeah.

Matt: Like the adoption idea. One salsa.

All

Shubh: right. How dare you, sir. Uh, uh- So- ... like poppies could be an idea.

Matt: Poppies could. And so initially- Yeah ... I was trying to, you know, brainstorm of what, what maybe would work. So if you've ever watched a, um, Remembrance Day ceremony-

Shubh: Yeah ...

Matt: there's soldiers that are, have their, you know, rifle down and they're resting on- Yeah

resting on arms is what it's called.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: And their heads are bowed.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: I thought that'd be nice.

Shubh: That'd be a nice

Matt: inflatable. But then I, you know, read about it a little bit- Yeah ... and I realized that, um, American soldiers don't do that. Yeah. And I'd, I'd want, you know, I'd want the-

Shubh: You want everybody to be able to buy this.

Matt: Oh, yeah. I want this to appeal to our friends down south.

Philippe: Yeah. So- '

Matt: Cause it's

Philippe: a larger market.

Matt: I think so, yeah. And they're very patriotic down there too.

Philippe: Yeah. Oh, yes.

Matt: Yeah.

Philippe: Yeah.

Matt: So I came up with, um, and the Battlefield Cross, and I guess that is one of the most- Yeah ... symbolic Remembrance Day images.

Shubh: [00:47:00] Yeah.

Matt: Do you know what that is?

That's- Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So, so it'd be an inflatable pedestal.

Shubh: Yep.

Matt: And then the, then the rif- So I guess when a, a soldier is killed in battle-

Shubh: Yeah ...

Matt: um, they stick their, you know, someone- Yeah ... sticks their rifle into the earth.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: Right? And then they put their helmet on top.

Shubh: Yep.

Matt: And then they put their boots beside it.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: So I turn that into an inflatable-

Shubh: Yeah ...

Matt: on a, on an inflatable pedestal. Maybe about four feet high or maybe a little taller than that. Yeah.

Shubh: Well, 75.

Matt: Oof. What if it was, what if it was-

Shubh: 75- ... violent? ... 'cause it's bringing me down.

Matt: It's a toner. And

Shubh: I got to- And also, what am I supposed to do, a bid on this one?

Like a- Like, but, you know, I'm not gonna do a bit, I'm not gonna do a bit about this. I've- I've got, I've got three great bits and I'm not doing any of them. I'm not doing any of them. Uh- That's

Philippe: right.

In my opinion, this holiday is even better- Wait,

Shubh: wait.

Shubh: Canada Day.

Philippe: August long weekend.

Shubh: Oh.

Philippe: Best- But it is- ... weekend of the year ...

Shubh: it does not have a- Mm ... name or association of any kind.

Philippe: That's why it's so awesome.

Shubh: Wait, can I just tell you about this incredible idea I had? So if I could tie this back to Matt... Sorry, not that your idea wasn't good. Um, uh, but I think we have inflatables for August long 'cause people just put them in the lake and jump on them.

Yeah. Uh, Matt, you started this by saying you don't like the inflatables because of the- I know ... the, the cost and the environmental impact. What if you could design an inflatable and it just, uh, it was year-round? It changed-

Philippe: Yeah ...

Shubh: based on what holiday it was.

Philippe: It morphed.

Shubh: So I'll give you an example. We, uh, when the kids were young, had a dragon inflatable.

For Halloween, we put it up beside the cat. Big windstorm, the dragon inflatable [00:50:00] blew away. Got badly damaged, landed on a neighbor's yard- Right into the ocean ... a block and a half away. Yeah. Yeah. We found it, though, uh, which was incredible. Then we brought it back, and the kids were very, very sad. So I took a Santa Claus inflatable, I put it inside the dragon inflatable, I inflated the Santa Claus, and then we made like a...

It was like, it looked like the dragon ate Santa Claus whole. But that just, I had forgotten that. Yeah. Now, when you said, "Hey, could we, could we, could we minimize the environmental impact?" Mm-hmm. If you had, like, a little, hey, um, uh, you know, it's like modular-

Philippe: Reversible.

Shubh: Yeah, reversible, yes. Uh, modular. Like, you suddenly you, you attach these two little parts together, and now its big fat stomach is all- Oh, yeah, that's very good

it's got pulled in. That's,

Philippe: yeah. It's like a Russian doll.

Shubh: Yeah, yeah. The, the, it's a reindeer at Christmas, but then, uh- Yes ... turns into, like, a cat. Yeah. You know? Yeah,

Um, and I thought that was really nice. And I, I thought, you know, it kind of adds a level of, I don't know, just a, a different level to, um, the experience, right?

Philippe: So cool.

Matt: Yeah. So I was thinking, you know, and I was reading about what it is and, uh, they're called terrace chants. And I was just thinking that terrace chants should be, um, incorporated into North American sports, and I'm not sure why they aren't at this point.

Matt: I think you need some kind of simple karaoke software that's compatible with a jumbotron [00:56:00] perhaps.

Shubh: Yep.

Matt: And then s- obviously you need some catchy tunes.

Shubh: Yep.

Matt: Right?

And then, uh, maybe an AI that'll track the fan engagement via several different metrics perhaps.

Shubh: Yeah, yep. But I want this- It needs to be- ... to be written by some guy.

Matt: Me too.

Shubh: You know? Or some gal.

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: I don't want the robots writing this shit. Me

Matt: neither.

Philippe: Yeah.

Shubh: You know? Yeah. I want that Cold Garden song, but I want it for the Jets.

Philippe: I would write one for the Jets in a heartbeat.

Shubh: Yeah. Well, they could just, uh, take the I Hate Winnipeg song- Yeah ... and rewrite the lyrics. That's, that's a perfect chant or song. Or just,

Philippe: or just keep the same song.

Shubh: Yeah. Well, that, yeah, that'd be, that would be what a, maybe a rival team would do.

Philippe: No, we l- I think Winnipeggers kind of love that song.

Do you know that song about the weaker thence? Oh, yeah. It goes, I hate

Matt: Winnipeg.

Philippe: Thousand sharpened elbows in the underground.

Shubh: Yeah. Uh, okay, Matt, I love it. I don't know how you do it. You gotta do it.

Philippe: Yeah. I'm into it too, 75 sauce.

Shubh: Yeah. I don't, I don't even care about execution. 75 sauce. Wow. One of the great [00:57:00] joys is at a sporting event when that happens.

Philippe: Mm-hmm.

Shubh: And like, it'll happen, North America, they'll sing along with like a, like the Bon Jovi song- Yeah ... but, but, uh, I need it to happen.

Matt: Yeah, me too.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: It'll be glorious.

Shubh: Yeah.

Matt: Yeah.

Shubh: That was awesome.

Matt: Okay.

Shubh: Uh, we gotta wrap.

Matt: We need to

Philippe: wrap.

Shubh: Uh, Matt, you came on here, you pitched six ideas, you created something from scratch.

You also waited patiently while we set up the studio. You referenced, I don't know, 22 callbacks to previous episodes.

Philippe: Yeah, really remarkable.

Shubh: That was, uh, uh, I don't... Yeah, I don't know.

Philippe: That was amazing. Thank you for joining us. Well,

Matt: th- thank you for having me.

Philippe: Some highs and some lows. Some 75s.

Matt: Yeah. I was really riding

Philippe: the snake.

Some zeros.

Matt: I was riding the snake today.

Philippe: Yeah. Yeah, really.

Shubh: Geez. I, I'm not gonna dodge that one. Uh, Matt, uh, you're, uh, an excellent human being. I really appreciate you. Thank you for coming on. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for helping set up the studio. And, uh, [00:58:00] man, yeah, like, people who are going to sporting events, start writing and singing songs, please.

That's all I'm asking.

Philippe: It'd be so fun.

Shubh: I'm not asking for a lot.

Philippe: Yeah.

Shubh: Matt Morrison, uh, crushed it. That's a wrap.

Philippe: That's a wrap.

Shubh: No, I say, "That's a wrap."

Philippe: That's a wrap.

Shubh: No, I ... That's a wrap. Thanks, buddy.

Philippe: Thank you.

Shubh: This is a presentation of Indian Dad Media in association with ... This is a

Philippe: Thursday Media production.
