Shubh: [00:00:00] I got my allergies going crazy 'cause of the smoke outside. So you are in for a treat. Is it smoky? Smoky as fuck.
Seb: Oh, no.
Shubh: It's smoky as fuck. I didn't know the- But my voice still sounds-
Seb: It sounded great.
Shubh: Thanks.
Seb: No clipping.
Shubh: Hello, Seb. How are you?
Seb: I'm well. Thank you.
Shubh: This is the first time I can see the guest in three weeks because there's not a light or a camera directly in his face.
Philippe: Yeah, that's
Seb: nice.
Shubh: We did it, guys. Let's fuckin'- Took us four attempts.
I'm gonna make you, uh, also explain inference data centers.
Philippe: No. Yes.
Shubh: I overheard Seb talking the other day. He's pretty smart.
Philippe: I know. He, well, very smart. Do you know what that is? 'Cause I d- I don't even know what that is.
Seb: Yeah, like, like-
Shubh: Wait, wait.
Seb: Oh.
Shubh: Save it for the
Philippe: podcast.
Seb: Okay. Oh, we're not on?
Philippe: We're not on.
Seb: Oh.
Philippe: Surely we'll be able to recover this footage, right?
Seb: Sound check.
Shubh: Surely.
Philippe: Surely you'll be able to stay up all night recovering this footage.
Shubh: Let's get down to business. That's my d- my 14-year-old [00:01:00] daughter and her buddies ironically... I think they're doing it ironically. It's a song they're all into right now, you know, from Mulan.
Seb: Yeah. I just got a text about the smoke.
Shubh: From me?
Seb: No. From someone else. Oh. That's the second confirmed report.
Shubh: This is very exciting. This is like a... Well, I'm doing this thing now where we're gonna bring back all the hits, all the guests who were hits, 'cause I don't wanna find new guests and, like, it be a dud, you know what I
Seb: mean? Oh.
Shubh: You know what I'm talking about.
Seb: What episode is that? Around, like, 11 or...
Shubh: Are we on 11?
Seb: 11 or 12? 29. 29? Episode 29. I must be missing... I'm, I'm keeping up on YouTube. When was the
Shubh: last one you put on YouTube? 11. Yeah. Bullshit. So I'm way behind.
Seb: Oh. Sorry. Seb's a
Shubh: YouTube listener. Okay. Yeah. Well, thanks, Chaz. Yeah. Uh, okay.
Philippe: That makes, that [00:02:00] makes five of you.
Shubh: Let's get down to business. Uh, welcome to episode 29, or as Seb thinks it is, episode, uh, 12 of- ... Your Business Is On the Line, Canada's number one business comedy podcast, the podcast where serious people come on and pitch unserious business ideas.
Philippe Burns, Tech Thursday.
Philippe: Howdy.
Shubh: Cowboy.
Philippe: Howdy doody.
Shubh: It's Stampede. This will be... This episode will come out during Stampede. You are ready for Stampede.
Philippe: I'm ready for Stampede. I just bought a new pair of boots.
Shubh: You're hatted up. You're booted up.
Philippe: Yep. I brought a hat for both of you. Dude, you
Shubh: have
Philippe: boots.
Shubh: Oh. Oh, you got a hat for me?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh, I'm gonna put it on. You know, I got a real proper cowboy hat last year from Smithbilt. Um, shout out Smithbilt. Ooh.
Philippe: Boom. Looks so good. Official.
Shubh: Uh, should probably introduce our guest.
Philippe: The one and only
Shubh: Sebastian Hiscock
Philippe: From episode one
Shubh: Co-founder, PureLend Technologies.
PureLend, uh, AI, I like to call it, because I think it makes you sound, uh, you know, more advanced.
Seb: It does. [00:03:00]
Shubh: But, uh, more importantly, I would say the most important thing you founded in the last six months, the Salsa Score. Not only did you found the concept of Salsa Score as a product, you basically created the scoring system for this entire podcast.
Seb: I'm impressed. I mean, I'm flattered.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: First of all, I just wanna say thank you. Uh, I did not expect you to run with that as long as you did.
Shubh: Yeah. Ha- Has it been... I'm just gonna take this hat off 'cause I'm hot, but I love the hat, Philippe. Okay. Can I just, um, ask you a question?
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Sebastian, how good do you think it's been for your brand being the first guest on this podcast?
Seb: I've noticed... I, I didn't expect really much, but, like, people stop me-
Shubh: Are you doing a bit right now? ... on
Seb: the street.
Shubh: Or did somebody... Has anyone ever- And say, "Are
Seb: you-"
Shubh: Has anyone ever stopped you?
Seb: No.
Shubh: Oh.
Seb: No. But someday.
Shubh: You were also- People will
Philippe: stop you ...
Shubh: you were also one of the first people to get the little, uh, light bulb gifts we've been giving all our guests.
Seb: I love that
Shubh: gift. But what was the immediate feedback you gave me?
Seb: I... Okay. I, I didn't wanna be too critical- No, no ... it's a behind thing.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: You know? [00:04:00] But, like, the, the, the cord is going into the front right underneath the plaque. Like, just flip it around.
Shubh: And then what did I tell you?
Seb: Uh, I don't remember.
Shubh: I assembled it backwards.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: You made it- So your feedback was one million percent correct.
Seb: I think if anything, it made the trophy even more unique. No one else had that issue.
Shubh: Yeah. There was no question- It's just unique ... as to whether it was handmade or not.
Seb: No.
Shubh: Right?
Seb: It was obvious.
Shubh: Yeah. Uh, this is very exciting for me for many reasons.
Obviously, Salsa Score, but do you know, Sebastian, I don't know if we've talked about this, if you weren't funny on that first podcast, we wouldn't have had a podcast
Philippe: Yeah
Shubh: That was supposed to be just a fun little pilot episode. Like, "Oh, we'll try this out and see how it works." And then, uh, while you were talking, I looked at Philippe and I was like, "This is really funny.
We have to, we have to air this."
Philippe: So there, yeah.
Seb: Yeah. I mean-
Philippe: And thank God, 'cause our other guests on that first episode were so bad.
Shubh: So you have our eternal gratitude and, uh, no residuals, 'cause you [00:05:00] weren't smart enough to get anything written up.
Seb: That's okay. That's okay. I'm
Shubh: happy with that. No royalties, residuals.
Uh, we'll mention you from time to time.
Seb: The exposure is good. I'm happy.
Shubh: When we write the book about this podcast, though, we will under-emphasize your importance, right?
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. It'll be like, um, uh, "Sebastian casually mentioned Salsa one time, and Philippe, uh, went into the lab and came up with Salsa Score."
That's how it'll read back.
Seb: I see. I g- I sorta had the feeling that, like, this whole thing was just about stealing business ideas.
Shubh: Oh. It really is. Really.
Philippe: And it kinda just confirmed that. This is just a business idea farm.
Shubh: They, they call Philippe the cowboy grifter.
Philippe: They call me the outlaw. Not,
Shubh: not because he's a cowboy who grifts, because he only grifts cowboys. Yeah, it's a common misconception, actually. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. He's always, uh, he's always, uh, been trading the, the horses that are a little sickly. Right? But dressing them up, painting them.
Philippe: That's right. Uh-huh. I love...
I sell, I sell mini horses as [00:06:00] real horses.
Shubh: But the thing with the- And they just never grow up ... with a, with a fish, with a fish- Just, just horse perspective. Uh- Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They look great in the catalog. He's like, he's Peter Jackson in Lord of the Rings. He's got it standing next to a human, but like 20 feet in front of it.
Yeah. And then, yeah, you keep telling people it's a roan chestnut stallion, but really it's just auburn.
Philippe: Okay. Got him. I d- Were those two colors?
Shubh: I, I guess so.
Philippe: Okay.
Shubh: I tried a little something out. Uh, so Seb, I texted you last week and I said, uh, "Hey, um, I think it's time you came back." So now that we're more than halfway through our year target, the goal was a year of episodes, um, I would like to bring back some people that, uh, I enjoyed having on the podcast.
Shit, I shouldn't have said that, 'cause then if people don't get asked...
Seb: Yeah, you gotta cut that.
Shubh: Try that again. Uh, I, um, w- would love to invite some people who are willing to come back on a drop of a hat.
Seb: Yeah, there are very few.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: I can imagine.
Shubh: But you know, Conan's got, like, a regular... Everybody's got regular guests, right?
Yeah. You need regular guests.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Um, how you been doing? How is PureLend going? We got Lucas's version [00:07:00] last week. I think, uh, for everybody out there, PureLend, I'm saying it, I'm calling it right now, Philippe, the hottest startup in Calgary.
Philippe: Wow.
Shubh: Yep.
Philippe: Yes. Okay.
Shubh: Name another. Name another. Name one that's hotter.
Philippe: You might be right. Yeah, it might actually be better I
Shubh: mean, there's some hot scale-ups, like Fueled.
Philippe: Sure.
Shubh: But startups? Give me PureLend- Yeah, you guys
Philippe: are sexy ...
Shubh: all day. I would draft you first overall.
Seb: I mean, thank you. Again, you guys are just, you know, buttering me up here. Flatter... I mean, i- if you got, if you got the latest from Lucas, I, I'm sure things aren't-
Shubh: Yeah, but he's given-
terribly different ... he's given us, you know, the, the mustache version.
Seb: Yeah, that's fair. I, yeah, we are, um-
Shubh: He's given us the Burt Reynolds- What's the, uh... What's the guy who was Burt Reynolds' partner in Magnum, P.I.? Tom
Seb: Selleck.
Shubh: Tom Selleck. Tom Selleck was Magnum, P.I., that's correct. We need the t- The
Seb: other
Shubh: guy.
Yeah, yeah.
Seb: The other guy's version.
Shubh: Yeah, that's right. We need, uh, Burt Reynolds' assistance. No, that doesn't make... That's not what you are either. We need Burt Reynolds', uh, best friends. Nope, that doesn't work. What do you got? I
Philippe: don't, I don't have anything. Let's say...
Shubh: Hold on. Let's [00:08:00] say Burt Reynolds founded a tech company.
We'd need his co-founder's perspective. How's that? Exactly.
Philippe: Yeah, there you go. That's
Shubh: perfect. You're wearing a hat. That works. You're, you're a bit like Burt Reynolds today. Do I look like Burt Reynolds? You're Norm MacDonald on SNL. He's like, "Uh, check out my big hat. It's bigger than a regular hat." Okay.
Anyway, sorry Seb. Uh, how's things going at PureLend from a, from a Seb perspective?
Seb: Fair. Yeah, things are great. Things are great. We're, uh... Yeah, we're hiring like crazy. We've got lots of job postings up right now. Oh, great. We just had... Today's actually, we had a new engineer start, her name's Veronica. Yeah.
Super excited about her joining. Um, and then yeah, I've got a calendar full of hiring funnel activities for the week. Do
Shubh: you, do you like hiring people?
Seb: It's... Uh, I'm new to like the top of the funnel. Yeah. I've done a lot of like later stage- Yep. Yep ... um, you know, like technical interview sort of stuff. Uh, but it's kinda, it's kinda fun.
Philippe: Yeah.
Seb: It's kinda cool.
Philippe: Yeah.
Seb: It's taken a while to like get used to just like the volume or like the scale of like- Yeah ... how many people you have to talk to until you find somebody that's really good. Like the first week of doing it I was like, you know, had five phone calls. Oh, it's a bit like
Shubh: podcasting.
Seb: And was like, "I'm never [00:09:00] gonna find anyone." Yeah. Like, "This is horrible," you know? Yeah. And, and then-
Shubh: Hi, everybody. It's Shubh here. Are you a startup founder or a scale-up exec that's trying to take your company to the next level? Are you looking for the right people to help you do it? Are you looking for people who will help you set culture, who have deep domain expertise, who can figure anything out, who are Swiss Army Knives and unicorns?
How are you finding those people? Are you juggling multiple job boards? Are you screening hundreds of resumes, doing dozens of interviews? Is it working? I bet it's not. Are you frustrated? I bet you are. Do you know how I know that? Because once upon a time, I was you. Then I discovered the New Network.
Jennifer Wiens and her team at the New Network help Canadian tech companies build and scale high-performance teams through a proven unique approach to recruitment and executive search. Also, they're awesome. I used them to help build most of my team at ZayZoon, and I would use them again, and I've recommended them to everyone that I know.
Check out [00:10:00] newnetwork.ca for more details. The New Network: I couldn't have done it without them.
You know what, uh, I wish there was two... This is serious ha- serious hat for a second. Yeah. I wish there was two things that I knew how to hire for better for early stage companies. One is, uh, I wish there was a way to test resilience.
Seb: Sure.
Shubh: I think that's the number one most important thing when hiring somebody early, resilience.
Seb: Yeah. That is hard to-
Shubh: How do you test
Seb: for that? Yeah. I don't know. I don't know.
Shubh: The other one is, are they gonna do the right thing under pressure?
Seb: Yeah. I... You can, you can maybe simulate some scenarios
Shubh: like that, but- Well, how do we do...
I don't mean do the correct thing. Yeah. I mean do the right thing.
Seb: Sure.
Shubh: You know what I mean?
Seb: Yeah.
Philippe: You can get, you, you can get like a podcast studio really, really hot
Shubh: Yeah. Or remember that movie- Instead of getting- Remember that Mike- Michael Douglas, Sean Penn movie, The Game? Do you remember that movie?
Philippe: No, I don't think it
Shubh: was- Oh my God, you gotta watch that movie if you haven't seen it. Yeah, we need to do that for hires. Just, that's... I'll leave it, I'll leave it. I want you guys to do it. That's homework for both of you to go watch this movie. Yeah. Phil, you won't be able to 'cause you'll be at Stampede all [00:11:00] week, but Seb, you'll be hiding out, uh, scared of Stampede in your apartment-
Seb: Yeah
Shubh: or in your condo. That's
Seb: my plan, basically. In your
Shubh: house. It's a struggle to avoid it. So you can
Seb: watch The Game. I will. Good. I, I haven't seen it, but I'm imagining now, I think, like, imagine, like, bringing someone in for an interview and then, uh, staging, like, a disaster situation- Oh my God ... or something.
Shubh: So this happened- No?
S- I mean, not as dramatically. You know Shy, who- Yeah ... A. Shy and I work, uh, have started a thing together, and he came on the pod. So when he came into ZayZoon to interview for the head of product role, he was supposed to meet our current, at the time, head of technology, and, uh, we had a technology problem that was causing a little bit of damage, if you know what I mean.
Um- ... and so instead of going to the interview, he just came and hung out with me while I was doing all these partner calls.
Philippe: Okay.
Shubh: And he was like, " Meh. Yeah, this, you got to see us actually work." So, uh, I think there's, there's some truth to that. Like, it's good, it's good, uh, it's good for both sides. It's, um...
You guys Star Trek fans?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: You know, the- Next ... the, the Kobayashi [00:12:00] Maru test. Yeah. Right? The un- the unpassable test. Phil's like, "You got this one?"
Philippe: Yeah, I don't, no, I don't. This is over my head.
Shubh: What? It can't be over your head wearing that big old cowboy hat. Uh, okay. Yeah, I like it. So you're hiring?
Philippe: Is it, is it similar to the box in Dune?
The, um- I don't know ... I forget what the box is called. Oh,
Seb: the pain thing?
Philippe: The pain thing.
Seb: No.
Shubh: Uh, no, not at all.
Philippe: Okay, no,
Shubh: no. No, that's a good test for resilience, though.
Philippe: Yeah,
Shubh: yeah. So if we could have that for resilience and the Kobayashi Maru for do you do the right thing under pressure.
Philippe: Well, I almost think what you're talking about is, uh, like, you could hire a company to do that.
Like, "Hey, I got these interviews. Come in. We're gonna simulate, like, a real fire that takes place in the building." Like a hostage situation or something. Right? Yeah. A hostage
Seb: situation,
Philippe: and just like, "We're testing what this person does under pressure." Yeah. And, uh, you should do them, like, 10 times a day, and
Shubh: you're like- Yeah.
Wait, wait. Is this a, is this a... Should we be pitching this business idea- This is a business- ... to each other?
Seb: Oh my God.
Philippe: Yeah, it's actually
Shubh: a really good business. I know you have an idea to each other, but you, you were the only one of the guests last time, so you don't realize you have the full hour this time.
Seb: Oh, really? Yeah. That's a lot of pressure. Yeah, yeah. Oh, so [00:13:00] we gotta just riff on
Shubh: this stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Seb: Yeah. Or
Shubh: let's go on. But hold on. Let's, let's, can we... I know we're- we, Seb's got an idea. Can we not leave this idea for a second? I think, like, simulated game theory stress testing as a service is actually kind of a great idea.
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So what would it be for PureLend? 'Cause okay, we don't want it to be just about the business, right?
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: We want it to be, we wanna just get a real picture of how this person operates.
Seb: Yeah. I mean, we, we do, like, exercises for, you know, disaster recovery scenarios- Yeah ... like tabletop exercises that we do- Yeah
like every year, a couple times a year.
Shubh: Yep.
Seb: Uh, like incident response, those types of things.
Shubh: Yeah, so the real stuff. Yeah. But what if... I'm gonna just, gonna hit you with something. You share an office with Philippe. Philippe, I would say, I don't wanna gas him up, uh, pretty, uh... He could, he could be an actor if he wanted to.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: So I'm saying, uh, people walk in one morning. You and Lucas and Wayne aren't there, okay? Philippe is lying [00:14:00] prone across his desk, knife in the back. Blood leaking out on the table.
Seb: It's a
Shubh: whodunit. Fake blood. Fake blood, yeah. It's a classic whodunit.
Philippe: You know what's actually- Yeah. That's good. You know what's actually great though is, is like you, you could design something.
I like what you're talking about.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah. No, let's build this. Let's go.
Philippe: But, but what if, but what if it's something like you, you have someone ver- very like m- like as they're walking into the office, y- um, someone- This company that you hire ... someo- someone, like, runs past them or something. Yeah. And with something very, like, recognizable.
Like e- like everyone walking by this person would recogni-
Shubh: Yeah, like my orange shoes today.
Philippe: Yeah. Exa- like your orange shoes. Exactly. Yeah. They run by you with orange shoes.
Shubh: See if this can- And then- See if the camera can see.
Philippe: Oh, yeah. Nice.
Shubh: Okay. Okay.
Philippe: And then they, like, they, like, run into some building.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: And then, you know, th- that just happens, but you don't know why. And then 10 minutes into the interview, someone in a police outfit comes [00:15:00] into the, into the office-
Shubh: Oh, my God ...
Philippe: and goes, "I'm so sorry. Have, has anyone recognized this person?" Oh. "And, and-" Okay ... "j- can you identify where they went?"
Shubh: Can I take it back?
I would like, uh, bring in somebody else to play the dead body, and I would like you to play s- the police.
Philippe: The policeman.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Well, thank you. That's very kind. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: So, so, you know, you could do something like this and just see how they react, right? Yeah. And I guess what- See if they're a narc or not.
Yeah,
Shubh: see if they're a narc or not. And then you and, you and Lucas, like, uh, the way we have to set this up is the founders are at, at an event that you can't get ahold of you guys. "Hey, guys. You can't get ahold of us at this time. We're presenting at this big event. We're gonna be completely unavailable for three hours."
Seb: Yeah And there's been a murder
Shubh: And there's been a murder
Seb: In the office
Shubh: Well, you shouldn't say that when you're presenting No, no, no Yeah, yeah, yeah That's
Seb: what the-
Shubh: But you can make a joke, like- Don't want anyone ... so if anyone gets murdered, we're unavailable
Seb: Yeah. It's-
Shubh: Uh-
Seb: We actually ask a question that's kind of like that usually Oh, let's hear it I don't know if we should, you know, talk about it- Oh, why?
publicly in ca- well, just people that are gonna interview- Oh, yeah ... us in the future. But, [00:16:00] uh, yeah, I th- I think I actually got this from, from Mark, uh- Le
Shubh: Dain?
Seb: Yeah, yeah. The, but the question being, like, uh, you show up, it's your first day, and I die. Like, what do you do? No way. Your direct manager- Yeah ... or your, uh, yeah, C-suite-
Shubh: Well, I mean, you-
are all dead ... you punch up that resume to apply for that job, right? Apply for that open role. Sounds like a promotion.
Philippe: And what are, like, good... First of all-
Shubh: Yeah, what are- ...
Philippe: may I say, if anyone that you're interviewing is listening to this podcast, and are, they're getting hints on this interview- Yeah
question, then you should hire them
Seb: Yeah. That's, yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. They've done their homework. How many people have not done, have not listened to Lucas's... Or yeah, that's a great point.
Philippe: You know what I mean?
Seb: That's true. Yeah. Yeah, they deserve a freebie if, yeah, if they
Shubh: do the, uh, research 'Cause a lot of people are like, "Oh, I did a little research on PureLend."
Yeah. No you didn't.
Seb: Yeah. You just looked at the website or whatever.
Shubh: You didn't, you didn't even... But you didn't even tell Claude to read a transcript. Yeah,
Seb: yeah.
Philippe: Unless you clip this and goes viral. I'm taking off the hat. I feel like I
Shubh: look like a hillbilly. Yeah. It, it just got r- It did, it was really hot.
That was the only downside. I do really appreciate the hat. I get to keep it? Oh,
Philippe: it's [00:17:00] not a gift. No, sorry. I wish it
Seb: was. It's heating up. Like, it's-
Philippe: Yeah ...
Seb: it's, must be a little
Philippe: light. It's getting hotter.
Shubh: It's the pressure. What's
Philippe: been a good answer to that question?
Shubh: Mm.
Seb: I think, I think, like, it's, to, to me, it's designed to, like, uh, identify if someone's gonna, like, take charge of a situation.
Right. Yeah. That's- Like, can they identify, like... Or, or, like, are they the type of person that's gonna come in and, like, ask or expect everything to be laid out? Yeah You know, in, like, a 30, 60, 90. Like, we don't have that.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: Right Like, we're, like, six people, so- Yeah ... you just gotta grab something and run with it.
Shubh: Yep.
Seb: And it's a good way to kinda get a sense of, like, would this person be totally lost if they- Yeah ... have no direction on the first day. Um,
Shubh: so
Seb: yeah. Usually questions.
Shubh: So can I actually, uh, now iterate on the exercise I proposed earlier? Yeah. Because now I realize if this is a interview question, it shouldn't be just some rando that's dead.
It should be one of you guys.
Philippe: No, you should all be dead. Yeah.
Seb: Everyone.
Shubh: No, no, I think that's too much. Someone
Philippe: goes in there like, "You, you gotta
Shubh: run this company." I think- Everyone's dead ... if I showed up to a company and every founder had been murdered- ... and I'm a pretty resilient, take charge fella, I'd be out.[00:18:00]
Immediately out.
Seb: What if the door locked behind you? I
Shubh: would d- And you had to- I would def- I- ... had to solve a
Seb: murder to unlock
Philippe: And a voice, a voice comes on that goes- This is just- ... that goes, "You've now taken over this company- Yeah ... and you must, you must solve..." It's like a-
Shubh: You have a demo in 12
Philippe: minutes. It's like an escape room.
Shubh: With a very large bank.
Philippe: Yeah. There's a company making sales meeting right now.
Shubh: But the founders are dead. Just remember. Uh, okay, I don't think you should all be dead. I think that's too much. And actually, now I'm walking it back. It might not even be death. Death might, might not be the right thing. Um, what if there's a clear bri-
Oh, oh, what if the win- there's a window broken or a door broken and, uh, laptops are missing?
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Right? Let's, we just wanna see how they react in a little, under a little, with the old pressure cooker. I love this idea. It's
Philippe: fun. What's that gonna test, though, if if they know to investigate a, a robbery?
Shubh: Hey, listen, I'm just saying if Seb- It
Seb: depends, it depends on the role.
If it's
Shubh: Seb, you know, CISO type- ... [00:19:00] Seb's hiring a bunch of engineers-
Seb: Yeah You know, security or compliance person.
Shubh: I would say half that job is fucking detective work.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Right? For sure. You're trying to, why is this little, uh, button red instead of green?
Philippe: Ladies and gentlemen, we got a new sponsor Center Nine the number nine.com. So center the number nine.com but not written center the number nine. Center- Center l- Nine ... nine. Yeah, but not N-I-N-E. That's a better way to describe it. Center Nine.com not N-I-N-E. That's not a better way. That's not a better way. No, that's a much more confusing way.
Do, uh, think they're immediately regretting sponsoring this? Yeah, that's right. My friends Riz Kassam and Clint Phillips, they run a Microsoft consulting shop. They are two former technical consultants who got tired of watching enterprises and companies overpay for bad Microsoft 365 work and built their own consultancy.
I've worked with a number of clients over the last six months. It's [00:20:00] remarkable the number of early-stage companies that use Microsoft and use Teams, and it takes them days, weeks to get stuff set up for us. So you know what? Uh, call Clint, call Riz, call Center Nine. They can do, uh, Microsoft 365 security, identity, co-pilot adoption, uh, AI compliance, M&A migrations.
They are a small team, deep expertise, no fluff. Wow. Did you like how I said no fluff? Yeah. That's great. So, uh, if your organization is navigating any of these things, reach out to them on LinkedIn. Uh, go to their website. Uh, you know what? You can, you can DM me. I'll put you in touch with them. Center Nine- Yeah
dot com. I've known Riz for a long time. I see him at the gym all the time. He's in good shape, too. Is he? Yeah, he's in good shape. Takes care of himself. So you know if somebody takes care of himself that way- Uh-huh ... he's gonna take care of your Microsoft 365 needs. Boom. Boom. Reach out to them on LinkedIn.
Uh, reach out to me. I'll connect you with them. Go [00:21:00] to their website, Center Nine, not N-I-N-E. Dot com. Center, center the number nine. So it's centernine not N-I-N-E dot com. Center9.com. And, uh, we're gonna put that in the show notes. They're good guys. They're gonna do a good job
And now back to the show
Shubh: Uh, yeah. But yeah, much more complicated.
Seb: Sometimes
Shubh: more
Seb: s- serious.
Shubh: Much more complicated.
Seb: But yeah. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: Yeah, more or less.
Shubh: Why, uh, I, so what would this business idea, outsourced, uh, pressure test hiring. Like executive recruitment firms, do you think they do this kind of thing? I don't think they do.
Philippe: I don't know. But they should. They should. I'm, I mean, I really think you should just take someone to, like, an escape room and see what...
I mean, you guys kind of do that with the- But that's low, low
Shubh: stakes ... the little game that you play. That's low stakes. Yeah, we do. It has to feel like a real problem. I think if you take me to an escape room, I'm like, "This is just for fun," you know? And then I can... You know, when you're fun, there's no pressure.
You can, you can take a few risks. I need there to be stakes, like real stakes.
Philippe: Right.
Seb: Yeah. [00:22:00] Yeah, there were, um-
Shubh: I don't know what it would be, though ...
Seb: I, I've been to, s- like some, uh, like WestJet used to do this in, in, uh, group interviews.
Shubh: Right.
Seb: Where they would, like, put everyone in team... They would bring like 250 people in for the same group interview.
Oh, hell
Shubh: yeah. Wow.
Seb: Groups, and then give them, like, you know- Oh ... build this IKEA furniture or that kind of l- Oh, I don't like that ... stuff, right? Yeah. And then just observe, like, what are they all doing and then- Yeah ... so it's a, it's, it's a bit of like a, you know, contrived scenario- Yeah ... where everyone's performing.
I think- But-
Philippe: I think the situation- ... pretty fun ... you wanna, like, reverse engineer is, like, how closely can you re- rebuild the Cuban Missile Crisis?
Shubh: Mm.
Philippe: And like- Mm ... somehow your, your interviewee- So- ... is JFK, and they have to, like, perfectly manage- Yeah ... the Cuban Missile Crisis, otherwise you're not gonna hire this person.
So how do you recreate that?
Shubh: I know I've established some pretty serious new- nerd cred with the Kobayashi Maru already. Yeah. Uh, I was also counselor at a UN camp in high school.
Philippe: Okay.
Shubh: So it was a two-week camp out in Nordegg, Alberta. A seminar in the United Nations International Affairs, still going.
Philippe: [00:23:00] Okay.
Shubh: Uh, SUNIA. You know what, kids? If you're in high school, go to SUNIA. Wonderful experience. Still friends with people from there. Uh, incredible. Anywho, um, we would do, like, a model security council, but then on one of the nights we'd wake the kids up at, like, 2:00 in the morning, and we'd call it emergency security council, and they'd have to get in their country groups and, like, literally it would be, like, some sort of analogy to the Cuban Missile Crisis, but for modern times.
Nowadays, that shit happens every day, so you know. But we had to make it up back then. Um, but I think that's a great idea, too.
Seb: Yeah. Yeah, could work.
Shubh: Uh, what do we call this company?
Philippe: Uh, we could just call it, like, uh, Missile Crisis.
Or what do they call, uh, uh, they call, uh, um, JFK Camelot. We could call this company Camelot.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. We could just call it, like, a- '
Philippe: Cause you're looking for Camelot, you're looking for the perfect, the perfect-
Shubh: You'd have
Philippe: to- ... knights for your- You, you- ... for your
Shubh: quest. Yeah, that's a good, uh, point. You'd have to call the company something that would not be recognizable, like, uh, [00:24:00] to a person.
'Cause if they saw you were connected to the VP at- Yeah ... recruitingcrisis.com. Whatever,
Seb: recruiting. Yeah, yeah. Threat sim. Yeah. Threat-
Shubh: Whatever. Yeah, yeah ... threatsim.com. Um, oh man. That's a really good idea.
Philippe: How many... Now, so, so th- that was, you know, maybe our idea, if you will. Well, it was a collective idea.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: So, s- so this is now your time. For the first time ever, Seb, you have the opportunity to give us a salsa score.
Seb: Oh my God. You're gonna flip it around?
Philippe: You're gonna
Shubh: flip it around. Well, he, he's also giving it to himself too.
Philippe: Well, yeah, yeah. I don't know about that.
Seb: Well, I wasn't really that
Shubh: involved in it.
Yeah. We w- ... uh, we, we, uh, we, we teamed up and we did, uh- Camelot ... the Recruban Missile Crisis.
Seb: Yeah. I think it's, uh, I think it needs a little, a little fine-tuning. Yeah. Like, I think we need more than, you know, one or two scenarios. Like-
Shubh: Yep. Yeah ...
Seb: and there's probably some stuff that you could do to, like, tailor to specific roles or like- Yeah
competencies that you're looking for. Like, we [00:25:00] need more development, but I w- I, th- this is a pretty high potential idea.
Shubh: Yeah. I think so. Out of 75 salsas, how, how are we feeling
Seb: about it? This is, like, a 70 out of 75. Yes. Ooh.
Shubh: This is- That's pretty good. This is top. Wait till you watch the game, and then you're gonna be like, "We should just do that."
Seb: Yeah. Okay.
Shubh: You gotta watch it too.
Seb: I'm gonna watch this weekend.
Shubh: Yep. You can watch it after Stampede.
Philippe: I think it's also so applicable. There's, there's that movie too with, um, with Bill Murray. Um, I forget what it's called. But essentially-
Shubh: Groundhog Day. Yeah. Lost in Translation.
Philippe: Nope. Ghostbusters. Thank you.
You would- Sorry ... you're not about to name it. Caddyshack. I'm, I'm seriously not about to name it. It's a deep cut, but it's awesome. So the premise is that, um, someone is, like, bored, right? And they basically hire this service that has a whole, like, investigation and, and things, and the starting point is this telephone call.
And so someone hires this service, and then unbeknownst to him, Bill Murray gets to the telephone [00:26:00] while it's ringing before the person who knows that it's a, a fake. Right. And so he goes through this whole thing thinking it's real, murdering some of the actors and, like, actually- Oh my God ... thinking he's really involved in the situation.
Hmm. Uh, and then he gets to the end.
Shubh: Yeah, that's it. W- That's not dissimilar to the plot of the game.
Philippe: Yeah, okay. Well then, I'm just say- you know, maybe it was bored people would do this too of just, like, in regular life we can start simulating crazy ass shit.
Shubh: I really, really need you guys to go home and watch this movie today actually.
Like- It's
Philippe: gotta be
Shubh: today ... as you're kind of unpacking this all, it's one of my favorites. It's pretty old now. It's like 30 plus years old. Okay. But, uh, it's really-
Philippe: All right, let's do it
Shubh: Okay, so 70 salsas for this idea I think it's a good one. And you're hiring a bit too, Philippe, at Tech Thursday, aren't you?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: What are you hiring for?
Philippe: Uh, head of content.
Shubh: People just come on here. This is just a recruiting podcast now. People just come on to- Yeah ... tell people to come work there. What's the head of content gonna do?
Philippe: They're gonna do... Well, they're
Shubh: gonna- Other than create game theory [00:27:00] for- Can-
Seb: Can they get the temperature control in this room?
Philippe: Yeah, exactly. Like, mm. Yeah, there's
Shubh: gonna be- That's the head of being content. That's- That's a little different. Yeah. Okay.
Philippe: That's exactly. Are
Shubh: they gonna write something?
Philippe: Y- yeah, they're gonna write all of our newsletters. They're gonna- Are,
Shubh: are they gonna set up some podcast rooms for some media partners?
Philippe: They might, absolutely. They might d- do it- How
Shubh: are they with sticky tape?
Philippe: I, we'll see. I... You know what, I haven't really had that many good interviews yet, so I- ... I really don't know. Some of the interviews you have, it's like... But I'm actually at the top of funnel stage where I'm like, I'm, I'm not even sure this person exists in Calgary, so, um, yeah, we'll see.
Shubh: So, uh, we got a lot of people hiring some cool stuff. Tech Thursday, the preeminent media brand in this market. Up and coming. And, and tech community brand in this market. PureLend, the, uh, I think, like I said, the hottest startup in Calgary. Maybe Alberta. You know what? If you're the hottest startup in Calgary, you're the hard- hottest startup in Alberta.
Philippe: Maybe the world.
Shubh: Fuck it.
Philippe: Uh, yeah, maybe. Yeah. It is the [00:28:00] center of the universe, I think. That's what
Seb: they say about Calgary, right?
Philippe: I think so, yeah. I've heard that.
Shubh: Yeah. Um, Phil had a question for you earlier to explain inference data centers. Are you able to do that?
Seb: I mean, I don't-
Philippe: What a non-sequitur. You got a sequitur.
We're 29
Shubh: episodes in.
Seb: Yeah. Uh, s- so it would be, like, a data center that has, like, specialized hardware that can run, like, LLMs, basically, foundation models, where you can do, like, AI inference.
Shubh: Okay. Can I ask you a question about that?
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: So, uh, so for the, uh, less nerdy folks out there, your LLM, your large language models, most people know, uh, from a consumer perspective, is, like, the output is ChatGPT or the output is Claude.
The LLM is running in the background. Uh, but those companies have those LLMs. How do you have a data center up here? Whose, um, li- large language models are you actually running in that data center?
Seb: Uh, it depends. Like- Oh ... like, a lot of- Wow, that- Uh... Yeah, that was a great question. Yeah.
Shubh: I'm a little...
Seb: Yeah. Just the weight of that question.
I
Shubh: should- [00:29:00] Yeah. It
Seb: sets you back.
Shubh: Could we have a serious podcast?
Seb: Maybe.
Philippe: No, that sounds horrible.
Seb: Uh, yeah, I mean, like, traditional cloud- Glad to ask all your friends ... traditional cloud providers like Amazon and, and Google- Yeah ... and Microsoft, like, uh, they will deploy their own models there, but then they also have partnerships.
Like, um, most of them deploy Anthropic's models. Microsoft deploys OpenAI. Like, uh, and then there's some, like, Canadian players like Cohere and, um, like, open source models as well. Like, you can also self-host in a lot of those data centers, uh, and they'll just provide the hardware for you to run, like, whatever open source models or stuff that you trained yourself.
Like, uh, yeah, it's really, like, any combination, all of the above.
Shubh: That was amazing. I think I actually understand now
Philippe: Do you, like, so,
Shubh: so- And Graham Harrison spent about 20 minutes trying to explain that to me, and Seb did it in 30 seconds.
Philippe: I know. I did a whole podcast with- ... Graham Harrison on this exact topic, and I still don't know what it is, Graham.
Oh,
Seb: well now I'm, now I'm worried that my, my view is s-
Shubh: simplistic. We'll get Graham on here- Yeah ... and we'll, like, do, we'll have him carve it out.
Seb: Battle it out. Okay.
Philippe: D- but does it mean, so inference i- is [00:30:00] just, like, the compute power within the data center is much higher in order to handle models?
Seb: Yeah, like what the AI does is, is inference, right?
Um, yeah, like it's predicting.
Philippe: Okay.
Seb: It's predicting text- Okay ... essentially. Um, yeah. So-
Shubh: So- So it's not your, not your, not your grandpa's data center.
Seb: No. Yeah, you need, like, special hardware to have-
Shubh: Gotta have all them
Seb: GPUs ... special,
Shubh: yeah, exactly. And do you think data centers should be in space?
Seb: Uh, if we can, if we can make it work.
Like, I th- I think on the surface it, it feels like- ... it solves some cooling problems. On the surface. But I, I think-
Philippe: Nice one ...
Seb: the reality is that's actually not true.
Philippe: Right.
Seb: Like astronaut suits and stuff, uh, like are, are mostly designed to, like, prevent you from overheating-
Philippe: Yeah ...
Seb: and not- Mm ... the opposite. Mm.
So-
Shubh: Interesting ...
Seb: I don't, I don't know if the cooling challenges actually go away, but-
Shubh: Well, it-
Seb: I'm not a... Yeah.
Shubh: It's- It, if not data centers in space, what else sh- what could we put in space?
Seb: Mining operations, uh, laser beams.
Shubh: Oh. Wow, laser beams- Weapons ... [00:31:00] for sure.
Philippe: Weapons, yeah.
Seb: Weapons.
Shubh: Uh- Yeah ... I... Well, something to blow up an asteroid that comes too close.
For sure. Need one of those for sure.
Seb: Planetary defense systems.
Philippe: Yeah. Do we have any of that shit? I feel like we need to have more of that
Shubh: stuff. I would like to have a sport, a sports stadium in space. I would like to watch a football game where gravity is not an issue.
Seb: Oh my God.
Philippe: That would be so insane.
Shubh: Like Space Jam.
Philippe: That's actually called Quidditch. Like Space
Shubh: Jam. I would like to watch Space Jam, but real.
Philippe: Yeah. But what, but-
Shubh: Did you- I say that would be called Quidditch.
Philippe: That's a lie. The sport you would wanna watch is not Quidditch. Quidditch would be so sick.
Shubh: Quidditch in space?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Space Quidditch.
That's a movie. Uh, okay. Uh, Seb, so, uh, we've covered a lot of ground here. You, you covered and braided one of our ideas, and helped create it, I would argue. Uh, PureLend is, uh, growing very quickly, looking for talented people who might be, uh, able to navigate a crisis, either manufactured or real. Uh, you've given Phil some guidance on, uh, uh, space.
Uh, you educated us a [00:32:00] bit on data centers. For most people, that's a whole podcast. We're only halfway. Do you, Seb, have another idea to pitch us for episode 29?
Seb: I do. I do. Uh, yeah. This is, this is, uh, you know, very different I think from Salsa Score. Okay. From, you know, the-
Shubh: Well, we'll tell you if it is.
Seb: Yeah.
Okay. You know, that idea started it all, but this is like, this, this is kind of a callback to my, my roots in the, in the airline ind- Okay ... the travel industry.
Shubh: Yeah. Right.
Seb: And so I was a little inspired as well by Lucas's, uh-
Shubh: The door being open?
Seb: Yeah.
No. So-
Shubh: That's a great story.
Seb: So, uh, yeah, the, I mean, the problem that I have with travel is that I hate it, every aspect of it.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: I just like- It's that you
Shubh: gotta do it.
Seb: Is that I have to do it. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Like, what I really want is to just close my eyes and wake up-
Shubh: Teleport.
Seb: Yeah, basically. Yeah. But like I said earlier, I'm not a scientist.
I don't know. There's all kinds of, like, [00:33:00] existential quest- like teleportation, are you even the same person- Whoa ... on the other side if all your atoms are ripped apart and reasse- Like, I don't wanna get into that. Whoa. Like, I'm not a philosopher.
Shubh: Well, I'm gonna be thinking about that all night now. Yeah.
Seb: What, what I wanna do is just, like, go to bed, take a little pill Wake up in my hotel in destination
Shubh: Uh, okay.
Seb: Right?
Philippe: So it's like- So- ... y- you anesthetize yourself.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: Exactly.
Shubh: I just watched a little movie called Flight of the Navigator with my kids this weekend. You ever seen Flight of the Navigator? No, I haven't.
He, he, he fall, he falls down, uh, into a ravine, and then he wakes up and he comes back and eight years have passed because he got transported to another planet.
Seb: Okay.
Shubh: Uh, spoiler alert, he gets trans- Yeah ... spoiler alert, he gets transported to another planet. So, okay, keep going. So you just wanna like, "Hey, my flight's in two hours.
I'm out." Exactly. You want to be out before you even leave the house?
Seb: Yeah, exactly. Okay. 'Cause that's where, like, the, the [00:34:00] inconvenience begins, like-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Seb: you know? I, I can, I can- Which part? ... pack my suitcase, that's fine. Like- Yeah, okay ... you know? I, uh, that's, that's okay. I don't mind doing that. But- Yeah
everything after that, getting the taxi or the Uber or whatever- So you don't, like,
Shubh: go to the airport ...
Seb: going to the airport You don't like waiting at the airport ... waiting in line, sitting around, cats, uh, the person in front of you can't get all their stuff out of their bag, and you're just like, "Come on," like, "Let's go," right?
Yeah, yeah. All the food is expensive, everything's bad, your flight's delayed. You get on the plane, it's all cramped. The person next to you is eating, like, a frigging sauerkraut whatever. It's gross, you know? Totally. You're tired, you can't sleep. Uh, the, the whole thing sucks, and then you do it all on the other end.
Huh. You're strung out. Often, if you get there early, if you're going to Europe or whatever from here, like, you, you can't check in to your hotel or Airbnb until 4:00. Yeah, that's so annoying. Yeah. So what do you do? You just gotta, like, drag your stuff around or put it in storage- J- ... and you're a zombie all day.
Like, all of it sucks.
Shubh: You're, like, Weekend and Bur- Weekend at Bernie's-ing yourself.
Seb: Yeah, except for you wake up.
Shubh: Except for you-
Philippe: So- ... but tell me the reality, though. Like, so what's hap- so you take this pill-
Seb: Yeah ...
Philippe: and what's the service? What happens? [00:35:00]
Shubh: Yeah. Okay. This is the mechanics 'cause I'm, I got real, real questions about this.
Okay.
Seb: So you put your PJs on. You know, you take your pill.
Philippe: Yeah.
Seb: You fall asleep in your bed- Yeah ... like normal.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: And then people show up-
Shubh: Yep ...
Seb: in the night. They come into your house.
Shubh: They scoop you up.
Seb: They grab you. They put you in a van. Yeah. I was, I was gonna say throw. They don't throw you.
Shubh: Yeah, that would be
Seb: terrible, yeah.
They gently place you- Yep ... in, in the van. Uh, go and collect everyone else. Yep. Take you to the airport. Um, they put you in some kind of- I don't wanna call it a coffin, but it's like a padded- Yeah ... travel-
Philippe: Yeah ...
Seb: box. We, we, we can figure the name out later. Yeah. But it's basically they put you in a box-
Shubh: Yeah
Seb: you know, and onto the aircraft.
Shubh: Yep.
Seb: And, and like, uh, yeah, somebody just picks you up at the other end, um, opens the box, puts you in the van, takes you to your hotel- Are...
Shubh: Hold on, are you in- ... and puts you
Seb: into bed ...
Shubh: are you in a chair on this flight, or are you- No ... you in... Oh.
Seb: That's what's so good
Shubh: about this. So you need, like, you need- You can-
oxygen and stuff in this box.
Seb: Yeah, that's what's so great about it. So like, so okay, so- Okay. You [00:36:00]
Shubh: can fit so
Philippe: many people
Shubh: on a- I'm starting to
Seb: come
Shubh: around here.
Seb: Exactly. Yeah, okay. Exactly. Airlines are so like, you know, m- sensitive to like, like, the margins are so thin-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Seb: you have to densify the aircraft as much as possible.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: The 737, the max people in the tightest configuration is like, I don't know, 210 or something.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: But if everybody was n- knocked out-
Shubh: In
Seb: boxes ... and laying down in boxes- Yeah ... you could, you could lay the aircraft out like a morgue if you wanted. Yeah. Yeah. You could stack people on. You can put people in the cargo-
Shubh: Really lean in
Seb: underneath the
Shubh: coffin bay.
Seb: I don't care. Put me in the cargo. Yeah. Yeah, totally. They put dogs down there.
Shubh: Yeah. Right.
Seb: If it's good enough for dogs- Yeah, '
Shubh: cause you're- ... it's
Seb: good enough for me.
Shubh: I would, I would argue, like, the way that you have designed a plane historically would no longer be relevant.
Seb: Exactly. You can reimagine the whole thing.
You're
Shubh: just, you're just packing them in.
Seb: Yep.
Shubh: Sardines.
Seb: You're sardines. Yeah. And- And I'm asleep. I don't care. Like I'll have, like I said, I'll ride underneath. Doesn't
Philippe: matter. S- s- so not only that, though, but you're, you're, you're p- probably making so much more margin on these flights. Like, people would be willing to spend more money on these flights- Yeah
but you're saving so much money as well. They're not
Shubh: [00:37:00] buying booze, though.
Philippe: Yeah, that's
Seb: true.
Philippe: They're not- That's true ... they're not buying booze. They're not buying the duty free.
Shubh: Yeah. I hate that they
Philippe: make you walk
Shubh: through the duty free.
Seb: All the- And all the upsell stuff- Yeah ... like the seat selection or the meal- I, I-
the snacks. That's true. You'd have to compensate for all the ancillaries with like... Yeah, you charge a premium. High price. Yeah.
Shubh: I, can I... I got two challenges and maybe a, a iteration- Yeah ... if that's okay. One is, um, I'm not sure I want them coming into my house to take me.
Seb: I, yeah.
Shubh: So here's, if I could just, if I could just maybe, like, tweak it a little.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh, I get in the car, gas. I'm out. As soon as I get in the car, I'm out.
Philippe: In their car?
Shubh: In their car. I get in their car. They pick me up, I'm out.
Philippe: Are they syringing
Shubh: you, or how are you getting- No, just gas. Okay. Yeah, the driver's got a mask on. They're gassing me up.
Seb: Yeah, I guess that's not too bad, but I- Yeah
really want the end to end, like-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Seb: fall asleep and wake up in the hotel.
Shubh: Now, okay. Yeah. There's, if I'm at a hotel, they can come get me.
Seb: Sure, but
Shubh: in your- Yeah, in my house, I don't know ... home it's different. Yeah.
Philippe: Why don't you like the [00:38:00] house?
Seb: There's some mitigating-
Shubh: I don't know how they're getting in.
Philippe: You could leave the door unlocked.
Seb: Hi- hide a key, you know.
Philippe: Yeah. Have
Shubh: a note. I just feel like I don't love it. I don't want, I don't want them in my house. But al- although I'm not the target demo for this, 'cause I quite like flying, so, uh-
Philippe: You enjoy flying?
Shubh: I do. I like it. It's quiet. I can read a book. I can have a snack. You
Philippe: can read a book?
Watch a movie.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah. Oh my God. That's my worst... I hate reading on the planes. I don't know why. I
Seb: mean, they have Wi-Fi now, so you're kinda not allowed to do anything but work.
Philippe: Yeah. I
Shubh: c-
Philippe: I- Especially if
Shubh: you work for PureLend ...
Seb: exactly.
Philippe: I'm a little antsy the Wi-Fi on the plane. Like,
Shubh: give me- Well, well we- This was the one place you could- Yeah, but Luc-
Lucas is flying Flair. He doesn't get Wi-Fi. So- That's true. Okay. That's true. So they're picking up, how do you validate, you know, there's a lot of, uh, ID verification required when you get on the old airplane.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: How are we dealing with that?
Seb: I, I mean, you could put your passport in your, in your Tamagotchi.
Shubh: I guess you just... Uh, you're lying in there. The person's just like, "Yep, looks like Seb."
Seb: Yeah. Just check the ID.
Shubh: That's true. Okay, it works. Okay, I'll take that. That's not a problem. I,
Seb: I think there's some ways you can mitigate the, like, [00:39:00] people coming into your house thing, and like, yeah,
Shubh: I- You guys were talking about space earlier.
This is basically just you're localizing what we have been trained to believe space travel will be like in the future.
Seb: Yeah, like
Shubh: going to hypers- You're basically putting people to sleep.
Seb: Yeah, yeah.
Shubh: You're Project Him- Hail Mary-ing them. They're waking up four years later.
Seb: Yeah, cryosleep and-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Seb: exactly.
Shubh: So you're, you're localizing cryosleep.
Seb: Yeah. Is that what it's called? I don't know what the sci-fi word f- I th-
Shubh: I think that's a good word for it ... it's, sounds,
Seb: sounds right.
Shubh: Sounds- Um, at first I hated this idea. I gotta tell you, I'm kinda coming around. Can we do it for car rides too?
Seb: Sure.
Shubh: Any kind of travel.
Philippe: Car
Seb: rides would be- Yeah ...
Shubh: I hate car rides. When I gotta drive somewhere, bleh.
Seb: Yeah. Any
Shubh: transportation. But my problem with the train, a high-speed train, is you can't pack enough people on it to justify the cost. Your- Especially in
Seb: Canada,
Shubh: like, yeah ... your solution helps me do that.
Seb: Yeah. Yeah, works for anything.
Shubh: What do you think?
Philippe: I love it too. Yeah, I think it's so fun. Um,
Shubh: what do you, what would you call
Seb: it? RestJet.
Shubh: [00:40:00] Oh.
Seb: You like
Shubh: that? So good. I love that name so much. I'm, I'm workshop- I love that name so much. ... gonna make it- I immediately love this idea 'cause of the name.
Philippe: Yeah. RestJet.
Shubh: RestJet. So good.
Seb: Yeah, there's a, a, some alternatives that I tossed around.
I had a, I had a- Yeah, give
Shubh: us some of the other ideas ...
Seb: I, I had, I had a friend back in the day who, uh, would basically do this to himself, uh, whenever he had, like, a long distance flight. Yeah. He just hated it so much that he- Yeah ... would get on the plane and take, like, a bar of Xanax and just pass out, and then wake up in destination.
Yeah. Sick. And he would call it Air Xanada.
Shubh: Oh. Pretty good. That's pretty good.
Seb: I don't, I don't know if Xanax is the, the best.
Shubh: Well, so yeah, you would have to immediately decide. What would you do? I guess you would probably have an anesthesiologist on staff. I, I don't know. Right? Yeah, I g- I know a couple of anes- It's, it's like-
anesthesiologists pretty well.
Seb: Ketamine. Uh, yeah, ketamine's one. I thought maybe jetamine, but it's, yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah.
Seb: It's a little clunky,
Shubh: yeah. And ketamine's also, like, it's in this, uh, people aren't sure about it right now- Yeah ... ketamine.
Seb: Is that true?
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Oh. I thought everyone loved it.
Seb: Yeah. Eh. [00:41:00]
Shubh: I don't wanna get
This isn't a medical podcast. Although it could be.
Philippe: Um, y- the one thing I think you would have to be conscious of is-
Shubh: Or unconscious of. Sorry, keep going.
Philippe: Is, uh, someone, Shubh is texting you about the smoke right now.
Shubh: Oh, people are texting about the smoke. Just how bad the smoke is. I came in when I was all stuffy and I was like, "Oh, it's so smoky out there."
And you guys were like, "What? It's not smoky."
Philippe: That's how hard we've been grinding.
Seb: Yeah. Haven't got outside in weeks.
Shubh: Come work at PureLend.
Philippe: You'll never notice the smoke.
Shubh: Uh, sorry. Un- uh, conscious you could-
Philippe: The, the one thing I- You gotta be conscious ... you'll have to be conscious of is what happens if the anesthesia wears off before you wake up?
Mm. Yeah. I was thinking about that. Like, like imagine- Yeah ... being in the box- Oh, yeah ... and then all of a sudden, "Oh, man." You wake up.
You were doing something like-
Shubh: You're in the
Seb: cargo-
Shubh: Like that Hay- like that Hayden Christensen movie, Awake.
Seb: Was
Shubh: he buried alive? Oh, I got a lot of movie pulls today.
Seb: I don't, I'll
Philippe: Google
Seb: once
Philippe: that's- Was Hayden Christensen in anything other than Star Wars?
Shubh: He was in the movie Awake. Awake. Awake. What- With Jessica Alba, and he played a guy who went under for [00:42:00] surgery, but he wasn't really under, but he couldn't tell anyone he wasn't under.
Seb: Oh, no.
Shubh: Oh, boy. I
Seb: hate that. Scary.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. So that's- Yeah ... you could have-
Seb: That would be an issue. I
Shubh: think- What was that Ryan Reynolds movie? He's buried alive in the coffin.
Seb: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking of.
Shubh: Yeah, you don't want that to happen. Well, that, that ...
Seb: No. I think, like, I think you need, okay- You need a
Shubh: panic button.
Panic
Seb: button ... it's just a button. Just a panic button. You self-administer. Like, you wake up, "Oh, I'm still in the coffin."
Shubh: Yeah, just panic button.
Seb: Press the ... I keep calling it a coffin, but-
Shubh: Yeah, don't call it that ... It's a transport chamber I would call it a, uh- Transport chamber ...
Seb: transport chamber. Transport chamber, yeah.
Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: Yeah. Exactly. Uh, yeah- ... you need a little button or something that's just like, "Yeah- Yeah ... more. More of that, please." Uh, if you wake up in transit, that would be very uncomfortable.
Shubh: I, I mean, you get so many people on a plane. Could you put your bags in the transport box with them?
Seb: Sure. Yeah, that works.
I guess, yeah, you still
Shubh: need your bags. So you just zip out, and then once they wake you up, "Huh? What, what?" Okay, so like I said, I know some anesthesiologists. I've been under a couple times. I don't wanna brag. Um, but, uh- ... you're a little woozy after for a while.
Seb: Are you?
Shubh: Yeah, [00:43:00] big time.
Seb: Hm. How long?
Shubh: Uh, it's a while.
Seb: Okay.
Shubh: So I think they... But, but you're, they're delivering you right to your hotel.
Seb: You're in your bed in, in the hotel.
Shubh: Okay. But what about meetings? So, like, you're flying out to go to some meetings. You have to then time your flying. I guess you just exclusively fly red-eyes. You just fly overnight- Yeah ... all the time, right?
Yeah.
Seb: For sure.
Philippe: The other thing that I'm starting to think about here is there's a world in which... Like, I have friends who travel way too much.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Like, they're spending more than half their year-
Shubh: Is it b-
Philippe: in a hotel
Shubh: Is it because they don't like their families?
Philippe: Uh, well, often because they haven't started a family yet.
Shubh: Oh, yeah, okay.
Philippe: Maybe. Um-
Shubh: Do you think it's an excuse for not starting a family?
Philippe: Yeah, maybe.
Shubh: Sorry.
Philippe: Um-
Shubh: Keep going ...
Philippe: but my thought is, like, what if this pod, this sleeping chamber-
Shubh: Yep ...
Philippe: was so c- comfortable enough that it was just your bed all the time?
Shubh: Mm.
Philippe: And so they, when they come into your [00:44:00] house, they just gotta zip this thing up.
Shubh: Okay.
Philippe: And you're already in the joint.
Shubh: And maybe there's a little, little conveyor belt that just deals with my problem. You just hit it and it just wheels you down to the door.
Philippe: Uh, sure, yeah, yeah,
Shubh: you can- I like how you call it a pod 'cause, uh, real- really, you guys are describing podcasting
Philippe: Wha-
Shubh: You're taking this pod and you're casting it elsewhere.
Philippe: Yeah.
Seb: Casting you-
Shubh: Would that be a pro- ... afar ... a problem if we called
Philippe: it podcasting? There might
Seb: be some-
Shubh: It'd be confusing. Would it be confusing? Yeah. Okay. We will... Yeah, I like, I like, I like Rest Jet way better. Yeah. I like this pod. You're in the pod all the time.
Philippe: Yeah, you could just live in the pod, and then maybe at some point we solve housing with the pod.
We should make them a little bit bigger and then- Also, it's a little- ... put them just everywhere ... mini
Shubh: hyperbaric chamber too, right? You can get healthier. Yeah,
Seb: that's true.
Shubh: This could be a whole lifestyle.
Seb: I like that. You know, I mean, now that we're, now that we're discussing this, the, the, the tech that I really want, not even...
It's not even teleportation. Yeah. It's shrinking.
Shubh: Ooh.
Seb: Mm. Like, I want an entire-
Shubh: Mm ...
Seb: you know, my [00:45:00] entire house and all my belongings and me shrunken down into-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Seb: a capsule like Dragon Ball-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Seb: and transport anywhere.
Shubh: Um- Whoa ... here's the only problem I have with that, 'cause I've also thought about this.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh, bugs and birds.
Seb: Would eat you.
Shubh: Yeah. They suddenly become like dinosaurs.
Seb: That's true. Yeah. Well, just don't leave your house when
Shubh: you- Yeah, but if, if, if you got a tiny little house- When you're shrunk ... it's not gonna be super strong. It's tiny now. I
Seb: guess if someone could step on it or something.
Shubh: A bird- A bird
would just have to- A bird could just smash your stuff ... pick
Philippe: it up in
Seb: his mouth and- Oh,
Philippe: no. Yeah ... peck you.
Shubh: So
Philippe: you need some kind of- Imagine the, the bird pecking through your windows ...
Shubh: you need some kind of dome.
Seb: Yeah. Protect you.
Philippe: An invincible tiny little dome. Protect you. I love how you, you would think about that based on your terrifying fear of birds.
Shubh: I don't love birds at all. I see. I've had some... I've had some, had some struggles- Encounters ... with birds in my time.
Philippe: One time Shubh was shrunken down and a bird tried to eat him.
Shubh: Yeah, but the bird was also shrunken down.
Seb: I could see that being traumatizing.
Shubh: [00:46:00] Yeah. Uh, yeah, the shrinking down thing is pretty good too.
You could solve a lot. We could probably cure climate change if we were all shrunk.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Right?
Seb: For sure. Buy us some time-
Shubh: Buy
Seb: us some time ... at least.
Philippe: Yeah, that's right. Could we just shrink people specifically?
Shubh: Oh my God, I just had the best idea. Just honestly. Person comes into their first day at PureLend.
It's like a squeaky little Seb voice. It's like, "Help, help."
Seb: I'm shrunken.
Shubh: I've been shrunk. But you can only type on the computer and be like, "I'm using Siri, but you can't see me. I'm so small."
Seb: Gay.
Shubh: And it, and it... then that's the, that's what we're simulating. Seb is shrunk. Jesus, 'cause what do you do?
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Like, dead body, call the police.
Like, it's pretty, like-
Seb: Cut
Shubh: and dry ... shrunk, you're shrunk.
Seb: No, please, yeah. How's
Shubh: that gonna help you? What do you do? I don't even know what you would do. Nobody can
Philippe: help you.
Shubh: I'm, again, I think I'm a pretty resourceful fella. I can't tell you what I would do.
Philippe: Would Seb actually be in the room or it would just be simulating?
Like, you-
Shubh: No, no, he'd be like a couple door- ... the eyes are so small ... he'd be a couple doors down with a tiny little mi- he'd be, well, not, his mi- [00:47:00] regular microphone and there'd be a tiny little... It would just, he'd have the interface to the computer, right? 'Cause he has fig- 'cause he's Seb, he's figured out, like, his, his phone is still working, you know?
He's got a, a, he's got a little Claude bot that's, like, telling everybody what's going on.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: But they're like, "Oh my God, Seb has been shrunk."
Seb: What do we do?
Shubh: And Lucas comes in, he's like, "Hey guys, we've got the big dem-," you know, this is l- how Lucas talks, "We've got the big demo in a few minutes." Um. And
Philippe: then that's, that's now Lucas.
Shubh: Yeah. Spot on. So I think it's very much how Lucas talks. "Hey guys." He talks like this. Yeah. Lu-
Philippe: Lucas is like,
Shubh: "Hey, uh, we got that big demo. Hey, yo, hey." Uh, and then the, all the new people are like, "Oh my God, what is this big demo about?" And, and Lucas is like, "Oh, it's got a very complicated, uh, architectural requirement. The inference data center has to be local."
Seb: Would that be in space anymore?
Shubh: And but Seb shrunk.
Seb: What do we do?
Shubh: And Seb's like, "Oh no, I'm shrunk, my battery is dying." And then he can't talk anymore. [00:48:00]
Seb: Solve it.
Shubh: That's a hell of a scenario.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: That is... I would love you guys to actually do this to somebody. I would also like to know if people would believe that you were shrunk
Seb: Yeah, I mean- I
Shubh: don't think so ...
Seb: I don't think so either.
Shubh: But
Seb: if it did-
Shubh: I would believe it. And I could be there, and I could believe it, right? And I could buy in so much that they'll be like, "Geez, this guy-"
Seb: Yeah, like Shubh's really selling it.
Shubh: Like, I'm like, I'm, like I'm really stressed out about this.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh, what are we gonna do? What are we gonna tell his family?
He shrunk. You know?
Philippe: Have you ever seen the movie Ant-Man?
Seb: Yeah. Yes.
Philippe: Mm.
Shubh: Have you and 100 million people worldwide ever seen the movie Ant-Man?
Philippe: I actually haven't seen it, but I- Is it-
Seb: It's like that.
Philippe: Yeah. Does it kind of- So
Shubh: you were just asking the question?
Philippe: Yeah. Does it, like do you kind of watch it and you're like, "Oh, I wish-" I wish.
Shubh: You remember on- If only. On, on, on- If
Philippe: only
Shubh: I could be that small. Yeah ... on like the second or third episode I offered to do a one-minute review of every Marvel movie for you.
Philippe: [00:49:00] Oh, I don't
Shubh: remember that. Ant-Man's one of them.
Philippe: And where would you rank it?
Shubh: Uh, it's very funny. You would like it.
Philippe: Okay.
Shubh: Uh, but watch the game first.
Okay, we gotta rate, uh, Seb's, uh, rest jet idea.
Philippe: I think it's a great idea. I love it. I'm, I'm not so opposed to, uh, having people break into my house at night. Um-
Seb: We could, we could put body cams on them.
Philippe: Right.
Seb: Like imagine- That's a match ... that we're just monitoring. Yeah Make sure they don't do anything untoward.
Philippe: Yeah. Right?
Shubh: They, yeah, they don't steal my snacks.
Philippe: Yeah. Yeah, you, you could go like, "Do you wanna watch, do you wanna watch it back?"
Seb: Yeah. Yeah. You could watch the video of you being abducted.
Philippe: Abducted. That'd be kinda like worthwhile body footage. Yeah. I shouldn't say this, but I, I had two winnings. I totally forgot this happened to me.
Shubh: The nice thing about this story is I know exactly when to start cutting, 'cause you said, "I probably shouldn't say this."
Seb: Just chop it right there.
Shubh: Yeah, I've got the- You, you don't need to chop it. You don't- ... I've got, I've got the AI trained now, so it's like anytime Phil says, "I don't know if I should say this"-
it just goes, uh- That's, yeah ... well, I don't want you to get in, uh, [00:50:00] you know?
Philippe: Well, I don't, I don't e- I don't even remember this guy's name kind of. You keep
Seb: getting tackled.
Philippe: Uh, to me this is, uh, 65 sauce idea.
Seb: Okay.
Shubh: Yeah. Well, I think I- I'll accept that ... blamed already. I like flying.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: So I'm not the target demo.
It's not for
Seb: you.
Shubh: So I'm gonna take my personal opinion o- off and throw it in the bin, and I'm gonna think about this from a, a- who the customer is. I think very wealthy people. Mm-hmm. 'Cause you're gonna have to, a little dough for people to come scoop you up from the house.
Seb: Oh yeah, this is very expensive.
Shubh: Yeah. That is your catchphrase. That
Seb: is my catchphrase. Yeah.
Shubh: Uh- I think no one is- ... so I think wealthy people are just like, "I don't, I don't need to deal with anything." 'Cause they're already, like even their private jets are too inconveniencing for them.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: So they're just like, "Box me up." Uh, so I'm gonna give it 62
Seb: salsas
Shubh: 62 62 salsas.
Am I supposed to say salsas or salsas? Salsas. Salsa dancing, salsa dancing. Salsa dancing, salsa's the food. Yeah?
Seb: I think I [00:51:00] say salsa.
Shubh: I say salsa for both, but a couple people listen to this podcast and they're like, "You keep saying salsa." I'm like, "Well, how the fuck else do you say it?"
Seb: Yeah.
Philippe: And then they said salsa?
Shubh: Well, they said... Well, like, if I was salsa dancing, but I'm eating salsa, I say salsa all the time.
Seb: Yeah, same.
Shubh: Yeah. Okay. So it's not-
Seb: We're right.
Shubh: I think so.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: You invented Salsa Score. Yeah. How could you be wrong with this? I wouldn't be wrong about this. Did you ever build, did you ever take Salsa Score to the next level?
Seb: Yeah. Did I not talk about that last time?
Shubh: You did build a little bit of it. Yeah. I'm just wondering if
Seb: you- Oh, I built it, yeah. It was too good. It was working for other stuff.
Shubh: Yeah, that's right.
Seb: Uh, no, I never took it past that point. I was hoping someone would hear the podcast and just take the idea, honestly, and run.
Shubh: There have legitimately been some ideas that should've been built on this podcast. Yeah. And I'm upset they aren't.
Seb: Yeah. And Salsa Score is one.
Philippe: Yeah, everyone complains, "Oh, I wanna stop working my nine to five." Well, listen to this podcast. Yeah. "Oh, Karel doesn't have enough entrepreneurs," they say.
Shubh: Well, there's 29 ideas minimum.
Seb: Yeah, at least. Just take one and run with it, guys. Start a- The idea is [00:52:00] the hard part. I don't know- Ugh ... nobody understands that. Execution is easy. The idea is hard. Please- Come and get free ideas ...
Shubh: I mean, I can't tell if you're kidding- It's, uh, obvious ... but you're also kind of right. I
Seb: am.
Shubh: I mean, execution- I am
is the worst. But, like, uh, the idea is also hard. Um, Sebastian, you came onto this podcast, and you did an excellent job again. You gave us, uh, actually- kind of gave us three ideas-ish, right? We got r- recruiting under crisis, crisis manage, uh, test your crisis management capability- Yeah ... while recruiting.
Seb: Camelot. Camelot.
Shubh: Uh, we got shrink your entire life so everything's easier.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: And we got, uh, RestJet, travel in a box.
Seb: Pretty
Shubh: good. Ooh, that's the catchphrase.
Seb: Travel in a box?
Shubh: RestJet, travel in a box.
Philippe: Wow,
Seb: that's
good.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: It's really good. It's really good.
Shubh: Yeah. Box me up.
Philippe: Your life fits in a box. [00:53:00] If- th- this does remind me of a Black Mirror episode, though.
I feel like- Yeah ... we are like you sh- live in a tiny little box and you just play, like, VR games all day.
Shubh: Mm. Like Wall-E.
Seb: Yeah.
Philippe: Like Wall-E. Yeah, same. I mean, we should just travel like Wall-E, just like always have those chairs.
Shubh: Yeah, and- I
Seb: mean, we kinda-
Shubh: We're on the way ...
Seb: that's the whole point. We, yeah, we-
Philippe: I should re-watch Wall-E
we have the, we- I feel like last time I watched it, we were so far away from that reality.
Shubh: Well, also you were probably very young.
Philippe: I was very young. Yeah,
Shubh: yeah,
Philippe: yeah. And then I re-watch, I, I, like for example, I, Robot. Dude, try re-watching I,
Shubh: Robot. Yeah, yeah. You're like, "Whoa, wait, whoa,
Philippe: wait." You're like, "Whoa, this is way too-" "
Shubh: Ah, I don't love this."
Yeah. Yeah. You'll feel the same with Wall-E.
Philippe: Really?
Shubh: Yeah.
Seb: We're at the- It's important.
Philippe: Was, what was that, like 2009? And like- Earlier I feel like.
Shubh: Yeah. Like, you were walking around, when you probably saw it the first time, the two of you, you were just walking around after going, "Wow," right? But now you'd be like, "Oh my God."
Yeah. "This is a real societal commentary, and we're us." And then you're like, are we all getting heavier and lazier? And the answer to those questions is- [00:54:00]
Philippe: And spending way more time on, on technology. Just glued to the-
Shubh: This was before the tablets. They, they, this movie predated the iPad.
Philippe: Oh, that's so depressing and dark.
Shubh: Pixar was... They know.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Damn. They knew it was coming. Anyway, on that note.
Philippe: Should we start, like, um,
Shubh: anti-telephone revolution?
Seb: No. I, there's people that, that are like that already, and they're not-
Philippe: N- good people ... fun to hang out with.
Shubh: Yeah, I think-
Seb: They're
Philippe: not good people. They're just annoying.
Shubh: You don't, just, you just need to put it down sometimes.
You don't need some kind of revolution.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Just go put it on the counter sometimes. Yeah. Just leave it alone.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: It's all you gotta do.
Philippe: Okay, fair.
Shubh: Get off the social medias, though, some of you kids, the kids out there.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: You don't need those.
Philippe: No, you don't Seb, thanks for coming on.
Shubh: Okay, we gotta end on a high note though.
That really kinda like, uh ... Hey, hey, Philippe, uh, got any, uh, uh, Tech Thursday Stampede activities? Looking, you got a hat, boots? Is your first [00:55:00] rodeo sh-
Philippe: Yes, our first rodeo is nearly sold out. We only have-
Shubh: Nearly sold out, what does that mean?
Philippe: Well, it means we've sold-
Shubh: You know, when people used to tell me, "Shubh, it's almost done," you know what I would say to them?
"So it's not done?"
Philippe: Yeah. I mean, it's kinda like I'm telling you job's not finished.
Shubh: Well, how about this? Can I just suggest a reframing?
Philippe: Yep.
Shubh: Uh, our first rodeo, only four tickets left.
Philippe: There you go. Wow.
Shubh: Last I checked- A little bit- Last time I checked ...
Philippe: it's more like 10, but still.
Shubh: Last time I checked, nine tickets left.
That's not many. 'Cause I just bought one.
Philippe: That's not many.
Seb: Yeah. Uh, can I buy one?
Philippe: Yes, come. Yeah. Lucas is coming. Hey, are, is Lucas coming? He, and,
Shubh: and his new girlfriend. Are you coming? Maybe I'll come.
Seb: Yeah. When is it?
Philippe: Thursday. Uh, it's on Thursday.
Seb: Okay.
Philippe: We're raising money for charity. Did you
Shubh: know the day?
Philippe: Yeah, you did know the day. I, I'm a
Shubh: good friend.
Seb: I mean, it's a g- it's a good guess. It's a
Philippe: yeah, it's a good-
Shubh: What day was it? You sh- just pick one of seven days, Shubh. You knew it wasn't gonna be Sunday. You know, one out of six chance. And you knew it wasn't today. One out of five, you're right, it wasn't today.
Philippe: It is [00:56:00] gonna be such a good party, I think. It's gonna be a, a hootin' and, and a holler.
Shubh: Uh, is something funny gonna happen if, uh, Seb and I come?
Philippe: You guys will have a great time. Mm. You guys will maybe get a little drunk. No, no, no. Maybe you guys do some ketamine and go for a rest- ... yeah.
Shubh: Maybe Seb ends up in a box.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Waking up in Mexico.
Philippe: This i- this podcast is only coming out on Sunday, so Lucas is not gonna know. I told him- ... told you guys this, but his new girlfriend is coming. Oh.
Shubh: Yeah. Are we really
Philippe: putting this on the podcast? And her friend. Uh, sure. Why not? And, uh, so you guys will have the opportunity to come meet his new girlfriend.
Seb: I'm excited. I haven't met her yet. I'm, and I'm,
Philippe: I'm- I, me neither ... I'm a f- Yeah.
Shubh: Um, I'm gonna do my Lucas impression for them.
Philippe: Yeah, you should. "Oh
Shubh: hey, it's me, Lucas." "How you doing?" I don't- That's
Seb: spot on.
Shubh: I like that Lucas talks like an Italian guy. Brooklyn. Uh, okay, so you got, uh, our first rodeo. You got some other, uh, Tech Thursday Stampede.
You're all this, all every- There's all these things ... you're gonna be everywhere.
Philippe: I'm gonna be everywhere.
Shubh: If you are walking around Calgary in the next 10 days- [00:57:00] And you see Philippe Burns, follow him, 'cause he's g- he's on his way to do something fun.
Philippe: I got a ton of things. I'm, I'm-
Shubh: I got a lot of stuff going
Philippe: on
I, I, I got a... Hey, listen. I got a lot of stuff going on, and, uh, I'll probably be not so far away from a drink, and, uh, I'll probably be right outside of Seb's window, screaming at the top of my lungs- Yeah ... you know?
Shubh: Tossing pebbles.
Philippe: Can't wait. Can't wait.
Seb: You're welcome anytime. Thank
Shubh: you. So, uh- ... Tech Thursday, things are taking off.
PureLend, things are taking off. If you are an engineer who's great and thinks they can pass the Kobayashi Maru, I would like you to apply for a job. Where do they apply? On the, on the jobs. PureLend.ai/jobs.
Seb: 100%.
Shubh: That is it.
Seb: Good guess.
Shubh: That, but that's it.
Seb: You nailed it.
Shubh: It's not careers, it's jobs. It's jo- You know why I know this?
Because I put a little thing in it, uh, for the, for the episode that Lucas is. I got a little video coming out.
Philippe: It's done. Is it, is there a reason why you called it jobs? Is it because you don't expect people to stay for very long?
Seb: No,
Shubh: no. It's 'cause the jobs are g- These are the jobs to be on. The SEO is
Seb: better.
Philippe: The SEO is better on jobs. Jobs,
Seb: careers. I
Shubh: don't know. I don't know. Hey, well, also, it's [00:58:00] not up to fucking them if it's a career. It's up to you if it's a career.
Seb: It's a career if you make it.
Shubh: I... You know what? This is- I don't know ... actually a real thing. I'm gonna fucking rant here for a second. Yeah. People are like, "Well, what about my career path and development?"
You know who's responsible for your goddamn career path and development? You are.
Seb: Yep.
Shubh: So that's why they call it jobs, Phil. Anyway, but yeah, seriously though, PureLend- Is it jobs? ... is a great, a great place. Don't let my yelling scare you off. I'm not here very often.
Seb: You're allowed to go outside.
Shubh: Yeah. I'm here- It's-
every couple of weeks.
Philippe: Sometimes.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Sometimes. Sometimes.
Shubh: Yeah, you get allowed to go outside once the job is done.
Seb: Exactly.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: We played dice today.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Oh, okay.
Philippe: It got cut short 'cause we all have to go to work, but- Uh-huh ... we played dice in the office today. Who won? Uh, your new employee. Veronica won. It was just super
Shubh: amazing.
Oh. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Did you let her win?
Seb: No.
Shubh: Wow. No. Yeah. Oh, she did dice already.
Seb: Nailed it.
Shubh: Amazing.
Philippe: And Angelica was not very good.
Shubh: Hmm.
Seb: Putting that in the performance review.
Shubh: Uh, oh, my God, one last scenario for you. You're playing dice on the third day of employment. [00:59:00] Founder clearly is cheating. The dice are clearly loaded.
Oh. Oh.
Seb: That's so good.
Shubh: What do you do?
Seb: We usually play as part of the interview process, so-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Seb: like, having, like, Lucas miscount and, you know, consult-
Shubh: That's the test ... yeah. Do the right thing- Say something, say something ... under pressure. That's the test.
Seb: Oh, my God. That's good.
Shubh: Loaded dice.
Seb: Loaded dice. Well, it's harder to, harder to catch.
Philippe: That's just so brilliant actually.
Shubh: Well, that's two parts. A, do you know something's amiss, and B, are you willing to, to stand up and say something about it? Nice.
Philippe: Yeah. No, I think, I think miscounting is a really good one. Yeah. Or, like, kind of like turning the dice.
Seb: Yeah.
Philippe: You know?
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: Or it rolls on the floor- That's pretty little
and you keep picking them up and, "Oh, that's a six."
Seb: Oh, that's a... Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. "
Shubh: Another six. Wow, wow." That's good. "Oh, my God." That's good. Oh, this is it
Philippe: Boy, like it, uh-
Seb: It's less of a business, but I think it's more applicable to-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Seb: PureLend. It's great.
Philippe: We al- 'cause we play if it falls on the ground, you are, you lose your turn, but he could, he could like say like, "Oh, it landed on my shoe."
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: And everyone's like, "Oh, okay."
Shubh: Okay. Yeah. [01:00:00] I do also like the idea of it's loaded though, and there's a magnet, so the dice like stop rolling, and then they flip. And so it's very obvious someone's cheating. Right? And then- When
Philippe: he like closes his lighter.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He just keeps putting his hand under the table and it flips.
'Cause you... Yeah, 'cause then you're like, "Well, hey, what's, what's going on? Is there something wrong?" And you could tr- you could... It's two parts. How long does it take them to notice? Like, you could look at their eyes. They'll... You'll know when they know, right?
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: And then if they don't say anything, come on.
What kind of pers- are they gonna put... Are they gonna stand up for what's right?
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: No, they're not.
Seb: I like it.
Shubh: I love it. Anyway, uh, that was a great way to end. Yeah. Now, I'm very excited about Stampede for Philippe. I'm very excited about how fast PureLend is growing. Uh, dice, you like to play dice at PureLend.
Seb: Yeah.
Shubh: If dice is your game, PureLend's your, the-
Seb: Come on down ...
Shubh: name.
Philippe: Come on down.
Shubh: Yeah. Come on down to PureLend.ai where they play dice.
Philippe: Howdy, partner.
Shubh: And also, uh- Serious work ... make the coolest tech [01:01:00] company in Calgary.
Seb: That's right.
Shubh: Yeah. Uh, Sebastian, you are welcome to come back anytime.
Seb: Thank you, guys. Yeah, appreciate it, seriously.
Uh-
Shubh: No, no. No. No, no. The gratitude is all one way here, please.
Seb: That's true.
Shubh: That's true. You created the score. You were our first ever guest. You were actually funny for the first episode. There, I, I say this in all seriousness, the podcast would not exist had you not, uh, been involved. 'Cause Philippe, you know how Philippe is.
He would've been like, "Oh, this is gonna be good." Then you never would've heard from him.
Seb: Such a negative guy.
Philippe: Exactly. You're,
Shubh: you're... He's always been like- That is his biggest thing, right? Yeah. He just doesn't like to try things. It's very frustrating. Close-minded. And then when he tries them, he doesn't follow through.
It's crazy. All right. Thanks, Seb.
Philippe: Thank you,
Seb: guys.
Shubh: That's a wrap.
Philippe: That's a wrap. Boom.
Shubh: I say that's a wrap.
Philippe: Oh, sorry. I say nothing.
Shubh: No, you can say boom.
Philippe: Okay, boom.
Shubh: Oh, let's do it one more time. That's a wrap.
Philippe: Yee-haw.
Shubh: Boom.
