Chaz: [00:00:00] well. You have stuff to pitch, right?
Shubh: Hello. Kind of.
Philippe: I, yeah, do.
Shubh: I just thought it'd be fun to get together.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: I think it is fun. It's great.
Shubh: We're gonna have to record now for three hours to give us enough content for the summer.
Philippe: No. You know what we're planning on doing? We're gonna do a-
Shubh: Yeah, we're just gonna record till tomorrow. Peyton, Peyton's gonna get, break up with Chaz.
Chaz: I tried to get her to come. She was not interested.
Shubh: What's
Philippe: Stratford boy in Cow Town? Yeah.
Shubh: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to episode technically 31.
Chaz: Technically.
Shubh: 31 of Your Business Is On The Line. Do you remember producer Chaz, everybody?
Chaz: I'm back.
Shubh: He's in town. He's in person, [00:01:00] on camera. He's wearing a shirt and everything. I
Chaz: am, yep. Not laying down
Shubh: or sitting up. Philip's wearing a cowboy hat.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: We're doing a special Sunday afternoon recording.
Philippe: Chaz told me, "Hey, wear your cowboy hat," and then I got here and he wasn't wearing a cowboy hat.
Aw. I never said I was gonna wear one.
Shubh: That's a, that's a great bit. Yeah,
Chaz: it's true.
Shubh: Hold on. I'm gonna- I'm
Chaz: currently wearing sandals.
Shubh: Chaz, your first time in Calgary for Stampede, yes?
Chaz: Correct, yeah.
Shubh: How has your experience been?
Chaz: It's been awesome. Been, uh, seeing a lot of cowboys riding a lot of scooters around, which- I'm,
Shubh: I'm, I'm trying to get the mayor on this podcast to really plug Calgary right now.
Chaz: You're trying to what, sorry?
Shubh: Trying to get the mayor on the podcast- Oh ... so really plug the city right now.
Chaz: What's the mayor's name?
Philippe: Jeremy Farkas.
Shubh: Jeremy Farkas.
Chaz: Jeremy Farkas?
Shubh: Yeah.
Chaz: Shout out to Jeremy Farkas.
Shubh: Yeah. Oh, that's your plug.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Oh. I don't know how many sh- shout-outs he needs.
Philippe: What else, what else you been seeing in, in Calgary?
Oh,
Shubh: great question.
Chaz: Well, um, I've been seeing a lot of Vietnamese subs. [00:02:00] I've been- I've had two beef sautés in the last two days. I'm probably gonna go back for another one tonight. Yep. Um-
Philippe: What's your speed run on the banh mi?
Chaz: Oh, it's, it's deadly. Uh- Are
Shubh: you ordering one Vietnamese sub or doubles?
Chaz: Just one.
One at a time, but- Are you- ... one every day
Philippe: Where are you going, Kim Anh's?
Chaz: What's that?
Philippe: You're going to Kim Anh's?
Chaz: Oh, yeah, I think so. That's on
Philippe: 17th. 17th.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: It's open till, like, 4:00?
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: Oof. It's good.
Shubh: Oh, shout out Kim Anh's, sponsor of the podcast.
Philippe: I, I was at, uh- We- ... Yu & Me, which is a Chinese restaurant that's open till, like, also 4:00 in the morning, I think.
Chaz: Oh, yeah, yeah.
Philippe: So much fun.
Chaz: Yeah. We
Philippe: found some randoms in the line and shared a table of six.
Chaz: Nice.
Philippe: Great vibes.
Chaz: That's lovely. Yeah, it's been nice being able to eat late here, 'cause where I'm at you can't really get good food- Mm ... past 11:00.
Philippe: In Stratford?
Chaz: Yeah. This
Shubh: is also a particular week to be able to also get food later.
Like, there are pl- places are actively open later.
Chaz: Oh, really?
Shubh: Yeah.
Chaz: That's nice. I'm-
Philippe: Except because of Jeremy Farkas
Shubh: No, we wanna get him on
Philippe: Oh, [00:03:00] we wanna get him on? Okay.
Shubh: Yeah. Got it. He's
Philippe: kinda like the Mayor Footloose, you know?
Shubh: He's kinda like the Mayor Footloose.
Philippe: He's shuttin the clubs down earlier.
Shubh: I gotta
Philippe: put- Damn.
Shubh: I gotta cut that.
Philippe: Um- There's, there's like 100 noise complaints, and he shuts down a tent of 40,000 people.
Shubh: Philippe, when I last saw you 10 days ago- Yeah ... maybe two weeks ago, you were breaking in brand new cowboy boots.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: How broken in are they?
Philippe: They are broken in. I cannot feel my toes. I think I have nerve damage in my big toe.
Shubh: Have you-
Philippe: These are a different pair. These are a different pair ...
Shubh: have you stampeded or some kind of event associated with Stampede every day?
Philippe: Yes. I have- Yahoo ... since Thursday of last week.
Shubh: Oh, to be young again.
Philippe: But I did- ... I did not go out on Thursday, which I felt really good about, but I did go- Great
horseback riding on Thursday.
Shubh: Oh. Well- Well, that's very Stampedy though.
Philippe: It's very Stampedy.
Chaz: Like through the town or-
Shubh: Oh, great question.
Philippe: In the mountain.
Shubh: Were you just walking down 17th going, "Howdy"?
Chaz: We, we saw two girls- Mm-hmm ... just randomly riding horses up one of the [00:04:00] main streets here. Yeah.
Shubh: I think
Philippe: I know those girls.
They're
Shubh: like stoked about it. I think it is also- I was, I- It's legal. It is? That happens in my neighborhood sometimes.
Chaz: Hmm.
Shubh: Not a lot, but sometimes.
Chaz: Yeah. We
Shubh: were- Pretty bou- bougie neighborhood ...
Chaz: we were also walking- ... at the river the other day, got- Okay ... stuck behind, uh, two cops riding horses, and one stopped to take a massive dump probably like 10 feet ahead of us.
Oh.
Shubh: We are really doing our best to get the mayor on the pod, hey?
Chaz: Yeah. Oh, yeah. What, is that a bad thing to say?
Shubh: No, I just think we should bring that up with him. "Hey, uh, you... The, the horses are taking big poops." They didn't have the little bags underneath their butts to catch the
Chaz: poop? No, but like the cop hopped off and cleaned it up.
Shubh: Wow.
Chaz: Oh, yeah? Yeah, he ha- Yeah.
Shubh: How did he clean it up? Shovel?
Chaz: He had... I don't know if he had a shovel. I, I didn't stick around too long 'cause it-
Shubh: Did he bare-hands it like Laura Dern in Jurassic Park, just reach into the big pile of poop?
Chaz: I don't know. Yeah. He did, I did see him pull out like a pretty substantial sized bag.
Philippe: Yeah. But when I was horseback riding, um, the, these horses would... It was my first time on a horseback. [00:05:00]
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: These horses would, and they would stop to pee, and so much urine came out of their bodies. Oh, yeah. Yeah, they pee a
Shubh: lot, yeah.
Philippe: And the one girl was like trying to... I forget what she was trying to do, like the, the lead on this trail.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: And, uh, she stopped to like take a photo in front of the horse and it started peeing and splashed all over . That's
Chaz: disgusting. Yeah, there's a lot of pee and poo in there, that's for sure.
Shubh: This might shock you guys. Uh, I'm not a big animal person. Oh? Uh, the first time I got on a horse in St. John's, Newfoundland, I was like three years old.
Yeah. And the horse took a spectacularly large dump-
Chaz: Yeah ...
Shubh: right when I got on, and I was like, "No."
Philippe: Is that why you don't like animals?
Shubh: I think that's part of it. Yeah. I mean-
Philippe: And then so did you get off?
Shubh: Yeah. I was like, "I don't wanna do this. Why would I wanna do this?" But I did, I have ridden horses a couple of times- Yeah
in New Zealand with Rita on our honeymoon.
Chaz: Yeah?
Shubh: Horse would not listen to me, and then the New Zealand people were like, uh- Did you talk him through it or- Yeah, I was like, "Hey, man. Uh, uh..." And the horse just wouldn't do anything, and she was like, "Oh, yeah, you got a bit of a, got a bit of a wild card then." I was like, "Why would you give the guy [00:06:00] who's clearly the least comfortable around horses the horse, uh, that, that one likes to bite?"
Chaz: Do you don't wanna get bit by
Shubh: a horse? That likes to bite?
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Why would you give me the horse that likes to bite?
Philippe: Is that a thing? They like to, they like to bite?
Shubh: I don't know. This horse sure liked
Philippe: to bite. If you caught a finger in a horse's mouth, what would happen?
Chaz: It would bite your finger off or-
Philippe: Really?
Chaz: Oh, yeah. But, like, I think they, like... I think they're kinda like dogs. Like, they kind of, like, do, like, more, like, playful bite. Okay. I don't... I'm speaking out of my ass right now, but I'm pretty sure I am pretty sure that they'll, like... Like, if they wanted to hurt you, it'd be a lot worse than more, more just, like, a warning bite.
Shubh: Right. If we got any horse people out there could tell us if a horse will bite your hand off. Philippe needs to know.
Chaz: Right into the show.
Shubh: Hi, everybody. It's Shubh here. Are you a startup founder or a scale-up exec that's trying to take your company to the next level? Are you looking for the right people to help you do it? Are you looking for people who will help you set culture, who have deep domain expertise, who can figure anything out, who are Swiss Army Knives and [00:07:00] unicorns?
How are you finding those people? Are you juggling multiple job boards? Are you screening hundreds of resumes, doing dozens of interviews? Is it working? I bet it's not. Are you frustrated? I bet you are. Do you know how I know that? Because once upon a time, I was you. Then I discovered the New Network.
Jennifer Wiens and her team at the New Network help Canadian tech companies build and scale high-performance teams through a proven unique approach to recruitment and executive search. Also, they're awesome. I used them to help build most of my team at ZayZoon, and I would use them again, and I've recommended them to everyone that I know.
Check out newnetwork.ca for more details. The New Network: I couldn't have done it without them.
Philippe: Yeah. I, my, uh... We should go live. I thought we were gonna go live today.
Shubh: What do you mean go live?
Philippe: Like, like try- What do you mean? ... to record this live and people could tune in.
Chaz: Oh.
Philippe: We could be streaming.
Shubh: That would be sick. It fucking took me 40 minutes to get the video set [00:08:00] up. What makes you think that I'm in any position to make
Chaz: this thing go live? What are you gonna... You just, the phone's already set up. You
Shubh: just gotta press a button. Our fucking part-time producer shows up, hangs out while I'm doing all this.
So I still- Yeah, I still have the title You and him are chit-chatting.
Chaz: I thought I was cut.
Shubh: We, we have not... Until you're replaced, you still got the title.
Chaz: Cool. Well, good
Shubh: to know. You're not ex-producer, you're just part-time. That's how I view it. I, yeah, yeah. 'Cause I'm like, "He's coming back," right?
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Well, now that you got Philippe, you guys just moved into a brand spanking new office space next door.
Mm-hmm. It's beautiful. So I would, uh, uh, posit that we should move the recording into your brand spanking new office and do it off hours when no one's there. Okay. What do you think of that idea?
Philippe: That sounds great. So just on the weekends do you think, or?
Shubh: Yeah, evenings, you know?
Philippe: Okay. Doing the weekends too,
Shubh: wow.
What do you got going, what do you got going on in the evenings? I do- You know, like a 6:00, right? Then Chaz can, he'll be home from work. Yeah. Suddenly Chaz is back in the, back in business. How
Philippe: is the painting?
Chaz: Well, that, that might be a little late then.
Shubh: He's got... Fucking [00:09:00] guy's got a three-hour window where he can actually do stuff.
Chaz: Yeah, that's also when I eat dinner, in that three-hour window too.
Shubh: Are we, uh, are we allowed to talk about Silver Tuna?
Chaz: Yeah, I think so. Still
Shubh: going
Chaz: well? I haven't got in trouble from the last one yet, so.
Shubh: Yeah, and, uh, would you say there's been an up- Has it been listed? ... uptick in their business?
Chaz: I don't think so.
Mm, I don't think so.
Shubh: Have, well, has there been a downtick in their business?
Chaz: No.
Shubh: Well, and, uh, there's a recession, so if their business hasn't ticked down-
Philippe: That's true ...
Shubh: I think it's ticked up relatively.
Philippe: Is there a recession?
Shubh: I've- A paint recession. Can we just go with the bit here? Can we just, can we just be a team player for fucking once in your goddamn
Philippe: life?
I'm not gonna let you m- misstate the state
Shubh: of our economy. I'm not gonna sully a national politician. Um, painting good?
Chaz: painting's great.
Shubh: Yep.
Chaz: Finally wrapping up. I've been... Since I started, we've been at the same house in Tillsonburg, this like m- well, I guess I can say that, this like massive house. Yeah. And we're just wrapping it up now, so.
Shubh: That's been like two months.
Chaz: More than that. Have you guys thought about- We've been doing wallpaper alone for two months.
Shubh: You guys wallpaper [00:10:00] too?
Chaz: Oh,
Shubh: yeah. That's hard.
Chaz: Yeah. We do wallpaper, we do the spray and stuff. I'm gonna learn how to spray soon. They want my spray painting expertise. Uh-
Shubh: Do you feel like you could paint just on a drop of a hat now?
Like, are you that good a painter?
Chaz: Yeah, like I, yeah, I would-
Shubh: So let's just say hypothetically you had a friend out in Calgary-
Chaz: Mm-hmm ...
Shubh: who, uh, didn't wanna give his money to another painting company.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: And say you came back out for like a trip.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: And you wanted to make a little cash while you were out here.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: How would you feel about painting his basement?
Chaz: I could probably do that. Basements are pretty easy I think.
Philippe: How's, how are your cutting in skills?
Shubh: Mm.
Chaz: I'm getting pretty good at cutting.
Philippe: Really?
Chaz: Yeah. I ma- I mean-
Shubh: Well, honestly, my basement's, the, the ceiling you can just reach up there, so you probably-
Chaz: Oh, that's easy
yeah. Yeah, that's easy. I am starting ... Well, I don't know if I should say this on the pod, but I am starting to take on some side projects.
Shubh: Oh.
Philippe: Wow.
Chaz: Just, just helping out friends. I'm not really gonna charge them much, 'cause I still don't know how good I'll be, but, like-
Shubh: Can I, can we give you a little business advice, as two [00:11:00] guys who started a couple businesses?
Chaz: Yeah, what's that?
Shubh: You should charge them.
Chaz: Well, I'm gonna charge them a little bit. I'm just not gonna charge them- Yeah,
Shubh: but don't, don't, don't charge them, like, too little, that's what I'm saying.
Chaz: Yeah, yeah. Well, I'll definitely get some money for my time, but-
Shubh: Yeah. Is there pizza? That's what I'm saying, don't work for pizza.
Chaz: No, no, I won't be doing that. And I'm not taking on too big of jobs either. I'm gonna do something- Yeah ... I can finish- Hear that, Greg? ... in four hours hopefully. Yeah.
Philippe: Is there, is there a painter slang?
Shubh: Oh.
Chaz: Painter slang?
Shubh: Interesting. Wait, what do you call a brush?
Chaz: There's a couple. Uh- I don't think there's anything for brushes- What do you call the-
but you know, like, the mini rollers?
Shubh: Yeah.
Chaz: We call those whizzes.
Philippe: Whizzes.
Shubh: I like that.
Philippe: That's tight.
Shubh: Why do you, uh... Uh, interestingly, that's also, uh, what Phil doesn't like about horses. Uh, what do you call the brushes that have the angle on them, you know? So that you can get into the corners. They got a different name?
Chaz: Uh, I should know. Well, the angle is- You
Shubh: could say, literally say anything, and we would believe you.
Chaz: Yeah, that's true. Well, I wanna come off as knowledgeable in [00:12:00] paint, but-
Shubh: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Chaz: Yeah. Yeah,
Shubh: yeah. The
Chaz: deep- Uh, it's called a sash, I think, or a sashay or some shit.
Shubh: Hmm.
Chaz: That's what it's called when they have the angle on it and
Shubh: they- It sounds so fake.
That's what s- sashay- Sashay is what Phil's been doing the last 10 days. Yeah. He's go- just, he's been on a 10-day sashay through the city of Calgary.
Chaz: Sashaying in his new boots.
Ladies and gentlemen, we got a new sponsor Center Nine the number nine.com. So Center the number nine.com but not written center the number nine. Center- Center l- Nine. Nine. Yeah. But not N-I-N-E. That's a better way to describe it. Centernine.com, not N-I-N-E. That's not a better way. That's not a better way. No, that's a much more confusing way to describe it.
Do, uh, think they're immediately regretting sponsoring this podcast? Yeah, that's right. My friends Riz Kazam and Clint Phillips, they run a Microsoft consulting shop. They are two former technical consultants who got tired of watching [00:13:00] enterprises and companies overpay for bad Microsoft 365 work and built their own consultancy.
I've worked with a number of clients over the last six months. It's remarkable the number of early-stage companies that use Microsoft and use Teams, and it takes them days, weeks to get stuff set up for us. So you know what? Uh, call Clint, call Riz, call Center Nine. They can do, uh, Microsoft 365 security, Identity, Copilot adoption, uh, AI compliance, M&A migrations.
They're a small team, deep expertise, no fluff. Wow. Did you like how I said, "No fluff"? Yeah. That's great. So, uh, if your organization is navigating any of these things, reach out to them on LinkedIn. Uh, go to their website. Uh, you know what? You can, you can DM me. I'll put you in touch with them. Center Nine- Yeah
.com. I've known Riz for a long time. I see him at the gym all the time. He's in good shape, too. Is he? Yeah, he's in good shape. Takes care of himself. So you know if somebody takes care of himself that way- Uh-huh ... he's [00:14:00] gonna take care of your Microsoft 365 needs. Boom. Boom. Reach out to them on LinkedIn. Uh, reach out to me.
I'll connect you with them. Go to their website, Center Nine, not N-I-N-E .com Center, the number nine. So it's centernine, not N-I-N-E .com. Centernine.com. And, uh, we're gonna put that in the show notes. They're good guys. They're gonna do a good job
Shubh: Philippe- Yeah ... how was your first annual tech summit presented in association with House 831? Ooh.
Philippe: Yeah, it was great. It went really well.
Um, I mean, you've been saying with Tate. What'd Tate say?
Chaz: Uh, he hasn't really talked about that. I don't know if that's a good
Shubh: sign
Philippe: or not. Huh.
Shubh: Wow, okay. Well, I guess the Tech Thursday/House 831 collaboration was short-lived, like...
Philippe: Was short-lived. No, I think it's been going really well. Yeah. Or I think it went really well.
Was
Chaz: that the one on Monday?
Philippe: Yeah.
Chaz: Yeah, yeah, no.
Shubh: You had, uh, you had founders from all over the country-
Philippe: Yep
Chaz: Yeah ...
Shubh: come in.
Philippe: And by that, we mean [00:15:00] Toronto. Yeah. But yeah.
Shubh: Would you guys do pushups or something?
Philippe: Why?
Chaz: Yeah, I
Shubh: don't- I don't know. That's just what founders do. Founders do.
Philippe: No, we had a white hatting ceremony.
Shubh: Did you guys, you guys talk about how to max-
Chaz: Yes.
Philippe: Yeah. We f- we brought in- It's- ... I, uh, I guess, uh, she, she called me a friend, Liz, uh, so I'll call her a friend. Uh, um- . Yeah. Cool. Uh, which was great. But, but, uh, she works for Tourism Calgary and is an official officiant of the white hatting ceremony.
Ooh.
Chaz: Okay, so they were legit white hats.
Philippe: Yeah. They were legit white hats. She- Everybody got
Shubh: white-hatted?
Philippe: Everyone ha- got it. She made everyone take an oath. Wow. And then she blessed one of the hats.
Shubh: Wow.
Philippe: And- Which I don't know what it does to the hat, but someone is out there with a blessed hat. Does it give it power?
Shubh: Why aren't you wearing your white hat?
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: Um-
Shubh: You know, that'd be a
Philippe: big deal. Well, because I actually gave- You could be a- ... mine off my head to my friend.
Chaz: Is that allowed?
Shubh: Okay, hold on. Can I just... Yeah. I think. You went through a whole ceremony-
Chaz: Yeah ...
Shubh: where you took an oath.
Chaz: Took an oath.
Philippe: Uh-huh. And then just tossed
Chaz: the hat.
And
Shubh: then immediately you were like, "Hey, man, here's my hat." This is like you were King Arthur, and you pulled the sword out of the [00:16:00] stone. Yeah. And everyone was like, "He is here to save us all." And you were like, "Hey." "Here, I don't
Chaz: want this
Shubh: anymore." "Here, Lancelot, take this sword."
Philippe: That's right. Well, yeah, you know, uh, we...
This seems like a lot of work. It-
Shubh: The oath was, uh, you know, try to keep the hat on for, like, an hour and a half
Philippe: No, the, oh, the oath was like be nice to people in Calgary- Oh ... is essentially what the oath was. Yeah. And then I said, "No thank you." So you,
Shubh: you, you had your- Yeah. ... you had your fingers crossed. I'll put my
Chaz: brown hat back on.
Shubh: Your, your fingers are behind your back crossed. It's
Philippe: good. I, uh, fingers crossed.
Shubh: I missed all the Stampede. I was away. Uh, and I got this custom cowboy hat last year, and I didn't get to wear it once.
Chaz: You should've let me borrow it.
Shubh: I would've wanted it back.
Philippe: Do you have cowboy gear?
Chaz: I have... No. I- I have, I have...
These aren't my most cowboy shoes that I brought. I have these, and I have another pair of brown clogs. Yeah. So that's the closest thing I have to cowboy boots other than, like, a pair of Timberlands.
Philippe: Okay.
Chaz: [00:17:00] Um, but I was trying to pack kinda light, so I just went sandals and clogs.
Philippe: Nice.
Shubh: Um, and you had... I'm trying to, um, gas you up.
You guys had, like, three or four events during Stampede. It was a big week for Tech Thursday.
Philippe: Yeah,
Shubh: I mean, I- Master- a little company called MasterCard, I believe. Hey, you guys ever heard of MasterCard before?
Philippe: Yes. Sponsor the show,
Chaz: MasterCard.
Philippe: Sponsor the
Shubh: show. Well, it, I think indirectly they may. No, I'm just kidding.
Philippe: Uh, yeah, so we had, uh... Well, my nonprofit had an event on Thursday, our first rodeo.
Shubh: Your first rodeo, yep.
Philippe: Ooh. Our first rodeo. Raised about 15, uh,000.
Shubh: Ooh. Uh- Oh ... cha-ching.
Philippe: Cha-ching button- Cha-ching, yeah. Where's the soundboard? ... on the
Chaz: mixer.
Shubh: It's way down there. Is it down there? What are we gonna do, reach down for it?
We don't have a table.
Chaz: Oh.
Shubh: There's been a lot of movement in this office lately. Do you want
Philippe: me to try, uh, button?
Chaz: Yeah, do it with your foot.
Which one was that
Shubh: one? I don't know. That was really loud though.
Chaz: For the audio listeners, Shubh's the only one with headphones on.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. [00:18:00] Oh, sorry. It w- kinda was like a... It was like bloop, bloop, bloop. No. But it was really loud.
Philippe: Okay. Bloop, bloop,
Shubh: bloop. I don't know what that would possibly be.
Yeah. Anyway. Okay, you had the MasterCard event, you had Our First Rodeo, you had a fundraiser. $15,000 you guys raised- Yeah ... for the Trellis Society. Incredible.
Philippe: And we had four private dinners on the same night on Sunday.
Shubh: Ooh.
Philippe: And there were-
Shubh: Hey, wait. Hold on a sec ...
Philippe: same night.
Shubh: How did you go to all four private dinners?
Philippe: Yeah, have you ever seen, uh, the third Harry Potter where Hermione has the time turning?
Shubh: Yeah, you were time turning.
Philippe: I was time turning.
Shubh: Incredible.
Philippe: I created some really fucked up, uh, parallel universes I think.
Shubh: Were the four dinners... Were the four dinners close enough that you could skip between?
Philippe: No, I just stayed at one.
But, but we have, um... But Angelica was at one, Tate was at one, and then, uh, Paisley, who also does work with us, was, was at the, uh-
Shubh: It's a... It was a pretty classic, uh, '80s sitcom bit- Yeah ... where somebody would be on a date- Yeah ... two dates at the same time. Yeah. Oh. And they would have them at restaurants.
Philippe does that as well. And then you would just be like, "Oh, I have to go to [00:19:00] the restroom." But then, you know, and then you'd run out through the double doors. Yeah. And then you'd get back and be like, "Whoa, whoa. Yeah. Is it time for appetizers already?" But then you'd get mixed up as to what you'd- Yeah
said or not said already. Yeah. Do
Philippe: you know, do you know how they, like, escaped from Alcatraz?
Shubh: We- Do, do I know how they did?
Philippe: Yeah. Who are they? The people. Like
Shubh: Sean Connery.
Philippe: No. No, the guy, um, the guys who really escaped from Alcatraz.
Chaz: Oh, is there only one group that's ever done it?
Philippe: I think so.
Chaz: Oh, okay.
Philippe: And they, they put, like, these, like...
They lined up their pillows and then had a weird face painted- Yeah ... on something. Okay. And then they flattened, and so they thought that there was really a body there. Mm.
Chaz: Mm.
Philippe: Um, sometimes I'll do that, you know, when I'm staying over at a ghost place. So I'll create one of those. Oh my goodness. Sneak out, go visit someone else and come back.
Just could you just do that last part without
Shubh: mentioning that first part? So maybe you'll keep... Yeah, you know how you put a face on the pillow.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: And then you... No, go from there. Yeah.
Philippe: I'll put a face on the pillow.
Shubh: No, no. No, you put... No, you say you put a face or a hat on your chair.
Philippe: Oh, on my chair. '
Shubh: Cause you're at a restaurant.
Philippe: Oh, in the restaurant.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. We're bringing this back.
Philippe: Putting a face on-
Shubh: Yeah. We're gonna make this- ... [00:20:00] the chair.
Philippe: That's funny. If I try and...
Shubh: Yeah, I'm trying to continue to make this accessible, you know? Like- PG-13.
Philippe: You know, Shaz, from what you've missed is a lot of me making really hilarious jokes on this podcast, and then Shubh just killing them all.
Shubh: Hey, Chaz, what you've missed is, uh, me repeatedly, uh, saving w- the career that Philippe is doing his level best- ... self- self-sabotage. I remember the best was that one- Bad influence on the set here ... the one thing, the one thing that I cut. And you were like, "Man, what are you doing? You can't cut that." And then after I released it, you were like, "Hey, uh, it was probably a pretty good idea to cut that."
Yeah.
Chaz: What was it? What was it? What was it?
Shubh: No, no, no. It was when you were- Was it on the- It was when you were, it was when you were debating.
Chaz: Yeah, I remember that one.
Shubh: When you were debating.
Philippe: Oh, the- Yeah ...
Shubh: yeah. Hey, speaking of, uh, uh, that episode, that was Kelly Schmidt's episode. Uh, what, uh... Can you let us in on, on the connection you were able to make over, over Stampede?
Philippe: Yes. Yeah. Um, so I was [00:21:00] not capping about knowing Rainn Veda.
Shubh: Yes. Uh, the lead singer of Our Lady Peace. Ooh.
Philippe: So I, I set Rainn up with Kelly Schmidt. They went for breakfast, and then Kelly Schmidt got her and all of her friends... Or sorry, Rainn got her and all of her friends VIP to his show at the Calgary Stampede, and they all went, and- Yeah
they said they were like schoolgirls. They just loved it. Oh. Yeah. They had so much fun, which I'm- That's cool ... very happy about. Wow.
Shubh: Yeah. So this podcast, uh, uh, may- even Kelly Schmidt's indebted to this podcast now.
Philippe: That's right. And-
Shubh: So how can we leverage that? Okay, sponsor us, Headversity.
Philippe: Shaz, you got any- I'm just kidding
story, like, uh, I, I would like to hear a story from you.
Chaz: A story?
Philippe: Yeah.
Chaz: Yeah. What?
Shubh: What-
Philippe: Uh, something that's happened to you in the last couple months.
Shubh: No. I listened to, when I was going back and releasing the secret episode, one of my favorite things was, uh, before you got your job, how Philippe would get, "Hey, Chaz, what'd you do today?"
updates.
Chaz: Mm-hmm.
Shubh: And, uh, on this particular episode that now has seen the light [00:22:00] of day, you talked about how you took a nap with your, with a cat. The
Philippe: grumpy cat.
Shubh: That wasn't your cat.
Chaz: No.
Shubh: And the hardest part about you moving into your new apartment was- Yeah ... you had to leave the cat behind.
Chaz: Yeah. Yeah. It sucks.
Shubh: Hey, have you- Who's that guy? Oh, yeah ... you guys can't, and you can't get a pet at the new joint, right?
Chaz: No, we can. It's just our apartment is probably about the size of this room, and- Right ... I, Peyton really wants to get, like, a kitten specifically. Well, I've kinda talked her out of that, but I just said there's no way we're getting a kitten 'cause it would go crazy in this tiny apartment.
Yeah. Yeah. Um, so we're, like, considering getting, like, a bit of an older cat. Not too old or anything, but I don't know. We just don't really have the space. Like, I d- literally don't know where we would put a kitty litter in our apartment- ... without it being, you know-
Shubh: The other thing about the older cats is they can usually play, uh, jazz music too.
Chaz: Uh, w-
Shubh: You know, that cat can really bop, bop, bop. You know? He can really, he can really play the jazz. You know? That's ... The old [00:23:00] cats that played jazz. You know what I'm talking about.
Philippe: I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Are you saying that when people go, like, "Oh, that cat-"
Shubh: Yeah, that cat. Yeah. Oh, ooh, that's a smooth cat, you know?
Philippe: Oh.
Shubh: Oh. But it's usually older cats who are playing jazz. At least ... I don't know any young people playing jazz, you know what I'm saying?
Philippe: It's old cats.
Shubh: Big time.
Philippe: I get it. I get it.
Shubh: I knew you guys would get there.
Philippe: It's so good, Shubh. Good, good reference.
Shubh: Thanks. Okay, so we're caught up. Uh, Stampede, your European vacation, you had a great time, yeah?
We haven't talked about that.
Philippe: We haven't talked about that?
Shubh: We haven't.
Philippe: Oh. We haven't talked about my Europe trip? You've
Shubh: been a very busy man. I've been kinda busy, too.
Philippe: You really have been. Oh my God, it was so fun. Was it? Yeah. I went on a couple dates in London.
Chaz: She's British?
Philippe: Yeah, she's British. Ooh. But we were actually childhood friends, which is the craziest thing. How- She, her, her dad had a job in Winnipeg- Oh ... when she was in middle school. I was in middle school.
Chaz: Whoa.
Philippe: Her, our parents became friends. We became friends, and then she went back to the UK, never to be seen again- Wow
until I had my hinge set to London- No ... and she sent me [00:24:00] a match. And so I was like, "Oh, I'm gonna be in London," but I didn't have plans to be in London. I lied.
Chaz: Did you already have your Hinge settings set to London before you went over?
Philippe: Yeah, doing a bit of window shopping.
Chaz: This guy's trouble.
Shubh: It's like a, it's like a whole
I'm trying to, in my head, just think like, "How can I shed this next, this last few minutes in the best possible light for Pip?" No,
Philippe: you don't need to do any cutting.
Shubh: No, I know you don't. I know I don't. I'm just thinking about how can I like, uh, you know- But I think it's you're, you're, you're, uh, you're proactively being prepared.
You were gonna spend some time in Europe, you know?
Philippe: Was gonna spend some time. I might as well do some window shopping, see what's out there. And, uh- Stop referring to it as window
Shubh: shopping. Yeah. I think just, uh, what Philippe said was, uh- That's not gonna help you get a date ... you thought he was gonna go out to London, but, uh-
thought he would, uh, you know, meet some people while he was out there.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah. And anyway, so we went out once, and then, um, went out a second... Well, two days later she texts me, "Hey, going out with my friends." It w- my work friends-
Chaz: Oh ... [00:25:00]
Philippe: at a little bar in Chelsea. Chelsea. Shout out The Fene.
Chaz: Is Chelsea...
This might be a really stupid question. Is Chelsea in London?
Philippe: Yeah. Uh-
Shubh: It's proper London.
Philippe: Yeah, it's proper London.
Chaz: Is that-
Shubh: Yeah, it's r- What is that? ... like right down the middle.
Philippe: Oh, yes.
Shubh: It's like- They were
Philippe: gonna all
Chaz: live in London So Chelsea is in its own city?
Shubh: No. So you're thinking about all the football clubs, right?
Yeah. They all in London. Like, a lot of them are in London.
Chaz: Oh, really?
Shubh: Yeah.
Chaz: Okay.
Shubh: Yeah. There's a lot of people in London.
Chaz: Yeah. Okay.
Philippe: A- and Chelsea, uh, yeah, she teaches at a all-girls private school in Chelsea.
Chaz: Cool.
Philippe: Yeah, so I met all of her, like, little preppy school friends.
Chaz: Sweet.
Philippe: And some of them were old, and we had a good laugh.
And that was a great play, Chaz. Right.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: So shout out The Fene. And, um, she told me she was gonna come for the Stampede. Obviously, that didn't happen. So- Dang ... yeah, we'll see. But-
Chaz: Is there direct flights from London to the Stampedes?
Philippe: Yeah, big
Shubh: time. Yeah. They still got that
Philippe: flight- Dang ... from
Shubh: Manchester
Philippe: here?
Um, that would be insane- I don't know ... I [00:26:00] feel like.
Shubh: They used to have a direct flight from here to Manchester, of all places.
Chaz: Yeah, that's interesting.
Philippe: I would not. Who needs that?
Shubh: You know, you go on a, wanna go see Manchester United play.
Chaz: So, so Manchester's not in London?
Shubh: That's correct.
Chaz: Oh, this is getting confusing.
Shubh: Yeah, maybe it's a little- I knew
Philippe: there was a Worcestershire.
Shubh: Worcestershire. I
Chaz: thought that was just the sauce.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chaz: That's a place?
Philippe: I think it's a place.
Chaz: Oh, shit. Isn't it? Yeah, I
Shubh: think- Uh, Worcestershire, shire, shire. Worcestershire. Wor- shit. I don't, I just use soy sauce, so I wouldn't know. Yeah.
Chaz: And then, uh,
Philippe: Sweden- '
Chaz: Cause it's easier to say.
Shubh: Yeah, but what am I gonna have Worcestershire sauce on? Lea & Perrins? I'm not stumping for Lea & Perrins. Is that a Worcestershire, shire, ter, Worcestershire, worcester- It's
Philippe: Worcestershire. I
Shubh: think we're getting worse. Worcestershire. It's
Philippe: just Worcestershire.
Shubh: Worcestershire? Yeah. Worcestershire. Is that how you spell, pronounce it?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Worcestershire. Huh. Worcestershire.
Chaz: I can't say anything properly, so I'm not even gonna try that one.
Shubh: I should think it should be Worcestershire, shire, wor- Worcestershire. Worcestershire. Shire.
Philippe: Which [00:27:00] is how it's
Shubh: spelled. Or Wor- shire. Okay. Anyway, so the rest of the trip was good?
Philippe: The, the, the, the thing, you know, my, my bit about window shopping is gonna get cut.
Five minutes- And now I'm gonna do
Shubh: 20 more minutes ... of the same shit. Yeah. Wait till you hear my pitch. It's all about Worcestershire sauce.
Chaz: Oh, God.
Shubh: Um, but, uh, you were- Where
Chaz: else did you go?
Shubh: Yeah, where else did you go?
Philippe: Oh, we were in, uh, uh, Stockholm.
Chaz: Nice.
Philippe: Which was super fun. Um, I had a, an old roommate who's, who's out there, and so he showed us around.
Chaz: Sweet.
Philippe: Um, a ton of fun there.
Chaz: Was that your first time in Sweden?
Philippe: First time in Sweden.
Chaz: Cool.
Philippe: Yeah, so much snus. After quitting snus, I
Shubh: went- Oh, you got sucked back into the snus?
Philippe: Come on,
Chaz: Philippe.
Philippe: When in Rome, you know? Yeah,
Chaz: I guess. That's fair.
Philippe: It's the birthplace. It's like having a, a cigarette in Paris, which I did also.
You know? Yeah,
Chaz: that's
Shubh: true. It doesn't count. That's true. Now, did you get back off the snus when you left Stockholm?
Philippe: Uh, th- I did, yes. It took me a while. It did take me, like, a week, but I did get back off. All
Shubh: right. Well, listen...
Chaz: It [00:28:00] took you a week, though?
Philippe: It took me a
Chaz: week. Did you bring some home, or did you go get some when you got back?
Mm.
Philippe: I, you know what? I actually just bummed off friends, but in hindsight-
Chaz: Bad friends. If you're listening and you're Philippe's friends that gave him nicotine- Yeah
Shubh: No. Yeah, he was off the snus. You got him back on the snus. Your friends
Philippe: are- I got myself back on. I was really thinking I was not gonna do it in Stockholm.
Your friends are supposed to- I landed- Yeah ... and I was immediately like- Mm ... "Get me a snus." Oh, yeah. Your,
Shubh: your friends are supposed to keep you on the wagon.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: On the wagon?
Shubh: Not push you off the wagon.
Chaz: Yeah, exactly. You need some better friends,
Shubh: Philippe You do Cha- if Chaz saw you in Stockholm, he would've- I would've, yeah
slapped that snus right out of your hand, and then he would've slapped you right across- Right out of your mouth?
Chaz: I would've slapped you. Yeah. Yeah, right. Would've
Shubh: slapped out of your hand. He would've grabbed your mouth like this, and said, "Spit it out, Philippe" And then he would've just started slapping you until you did.
Chaz: Yeah. I would've treated you like a dog that had something in its mouth.
Philippe: Like grabbing on my jaw, I'm just
Chaz: like-
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah ... "
Philippe: Open."
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: What do you got there? Um, all right. Well, I think we're all caught up [00:29:00] More or less.
Chaz: Yeah?
Shubh: Uh, I kinda got you guys together. I didn't really have a huge-
Philippe: No, you were in Kelowna. I was in Kelowna.
Shubh: I was in Kelowna. Oh, yeah. Oh, that new... Ah, yeah. Okay, good.
Uh, I was in Kelowna. I was in Kelowna for a week. It was very hot. It was delightful. Yeah. I golfed a couple times.
Chaz: Nice. How'd you play?
Shubh: Hung out at the pool. Um, I played okay one of the rounds, and not great the first round.
Chaz: Any birdies?
Shubh: I birdied the last of my second- Wow. Oh. Yeah. Chipped in for bird.
Chaz: That's the best feeling when you're-
Shubh: Ah
Chaz: having a mediocre round
Shubh: and then- Uh ... you finish with a birdie. Shannon Lake Golf Course, a delight little- It's a wonderful course ... golf course. Uh, I, uh, the greens were unreadable, so I couldn't make a putt, but then I just- It's- ... chipped in, and it felt great.
Chaz: Ooh.
Shubh: So that was nice. Uh, no, it was really nice. Had a couple, uh, dinners, nice dinners.
Watched a lot of the World Cup. I've been watching so much of the World Cup.
Chaz: Who's gonna win? Yeah. By the time this comes out, it'll probably be over no?
Shubh: Uh, this has come... We got one week, so no, I don't think the finals will be yet. Ooh. The semis. I had picked England as my pre-tournament choice.
Philippe: Wow, did you make a [00:30:00] bet on that?
Shubh: I did not. Um, but that's only 'cause my, uh, soccer coach growing up was English. So I have a predisposition for the- Mm ... English team.
Philippe: We should just start th- th- this to be a betting podcast. I bet you we would make a ton of money.
Shubh: Oh my God. We should get a betting sponsor. ToonieBet would sponsor. Yeah.
Anybody. Betting companies have a lot of money.
Philippe: Brought to you by Kalshi. We should just start like
Shubh: And if you're looking up at the PolyMarket- ... for predicting how many consecutive hours Philippe would've worn his cowboy boots this
Philippe: week.
Shubh: The over-under was at 72. If you picked the over-
Philippe: That's right. I'm very happy that I- You did what?
did not at any point this week wake up in my cowboy boots. Good. I was really afraid that would happen.
Shubh: Did you wake up in anybody else's cowboy boots? I've,
Philippe: I've woken up, like, fully clothed- Did you wake up in one cowboy
Shubh: boot? ... in one of
Philippe: my cowboy boots once, but, uh, no, they've always- Every time the boots come off
been on, which is good.
Shubh: Great. Good for you. You did
Philippe: it. Yeah. Did wake up on my kitchen floor once, though, but...
Chaz: Oh my.
Shubh: With McDonald's. Did you order some McDonald's
Philippe: in? No, a big [00:31:00] pizza.
Chaz: From
Philippe: Domino's? Like a chicken pizza. No, from- Water
Chaz: chicken pizza? Oh my God.
Philippe: There's a place right in front of my house called Pizzaholic.
Chaz: Yeah?
Philippe: And so that's- Yeah ... where I get... Uh, no, it's horrible. Yeah. Really. Don't sponsor us. I don't even- I don't even wanna look at you guys. Reminds
Shubh: me, there used to be a place, probably before your guys's, uh, your time hanging out in Calgary, called Stardust Pizza on 11th Ave. Stardust. Just actually down the road.
And we- You know Cody
Chaz: Rhodes ...
Shubh: we used to go out we, and then we'd go to Stardust Pizza every time on the way home.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: And then it was like a two-block walk to my apartment. I was like, "This pizza is the best pizza"-
Chaz: Yeah ... "
Shubh: in the world."
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: So one time then a couple of my buddies came up from Edmonton, we were going out, and
And they were like, "Oh, we haven't had dinner." I was like, "Guys, don't worry about it. We're gonna stop for pizza on the way out to the pub." We're gonna go to Stardust Pizza. Yeah. Went to Stardust Pizza. It was awful.
Chaz: Yeah, you don't wanna go before-
Shubh: It turns out that pizza was only good-
Chaz: If you're- ...
Shubh: if you had had, um-
Philippe: 500 drinks.
Shubh: Yes, approximately. So, uh, it's [00:32:00] not there anymore. Think it's a coffee shop now. But yeah, sometimes pizza, sometimes you just need the right pizza at the right time.
Chaz: Well, yeah, timing is very important with pizza, I feel like. Yeah.
Philippe: You know what they say about pizza.
Chaz: It's like, it's like sex? It's like sex. And marketing?
Philippe: Wait, only losers pay for it
Chaz: So true. Uh,
Shubh: the other thing I noticed about Kelowna, and th- this is gonna tie... I don't really have a pitch. I just had an excuse to get you guys together. But, uh, um, have
Philippe: you- Welcome to episode 31, where we're just gonna shoot the shit.
Shubh: Yeah, it's a banter pod. It's
Philippe: the stampede edition.
Chaz,
Shubh: Chaz is out here in person. Fucking listeners, if you don't like it, fucking listen to the other free audio that you can fucking download on the internet. Uh, so I was out in Kelowna. You ever driven out to Kelowna and back?
Chaz: Nope.
Shubh: Chaz, I know you haven't. Philippe, uh, you ever driven out there? To the Okanagan?
Uh, I actually
Chaz: have, yeah, once. Which direction is Kelowna from here?
Shubh: West.
Chaz: [00:33:00] Okay. It's in
Shubh: the mountains. West. It's interior British Columbia. Oh, yes. Like seven-hour drive.
Chaz: Okay.
Shubh: Um, Chaz, when you drive up to, uh, Muskoka- Yeah ... are there a lot of billboards on the highway?
Chaz: There's some.
Shubh: Kelowna, the drive to Kelowna, I have never seen...
I've done this drive before- Mm-hmm ... but I wasn't driving the whole way this time. There are the most billboards I've ever seen, I think anywhere. And then at one point in Kelowna, you're driving around the bridge in the city, and you're coming around the turn. There's a lake, beautiful view of the lake.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Billboard, billboard, billboard. There's, like, 22, I counted 22 billboards.
Chaz: Just blocking the view?
Shubh: Just, like, side to side. Yeah. Which is nuts.
Chaz: That's horrible.
Shubh: That's too many billboards.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: But what I noticed when I was looking at all those billboards was- Mm-hmm ... and so I do have a mini pitch here The beautiful lake was behind me.
Mm-hmm. You know, where there were no billboards.
Chaz: In the water.
Shubh: On the lake.
Chaz: Whoa.
Shubh: Again, you guys might be too young to remember this, but I believe when [00:34:00] Windows 95 or Windows 98 came out, Microsoft launch was like this boat with the Windows 98 logo coming into Sydney Harbor. I don't really know why they did it in Australia.
But then I thought, billboards on boats. You know, people pay for like skywriters to do stuff. Yeah,
Chaz: yeah.
Shubh: Why can't I get a billboard on a boat in Lake Okanagan advertising my winery, my podcast-
Chaz: Hmm ...
Shubh: my restaurant, my boat company?
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: I think it's a, an incredibly underserved advertising opportunity.
Chaz: So you saw the billboards blocking the view of the lake.
That's right. Uh-huh. Your idea was to add more billboards on the lake.
Shubh: Yeah, I'm a capitalist.
Chaz: Yeah, I'd say. I'd say.
Shubh: I mean, I do appreciate natural beauty-
Chaz: Yeah, but just not that ...
Shubh: but I'm also like, "Hey."
Philippe: You know how they tag fish? They should
Shubh: do advertisements. I don't know. I know, I don't know [00:35:00] how they tag the fish.
Philippe: No, but do you know that they do?
Shubh: Yeah, they put a little thing in them. They, w- see where they swim
Philippe: around the world. Yeah, you see them swim. Yeah. You, you know, you can see, you can see the tag.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah. They should start branding those.
Chaz: Branding the fish?
Shubh: Yeah, but
Philippe: how do you- Yeah, like, like Bass Pro Shop could, could pay to have their advertisement on the tag on the fish.
Shubh: So what ha- And then- So when, what happens? Somebody pulls the fish out of the water?
Philippe: And they're like, "Oh, Bass Pro Shop."
Shubh: It's, that's pretty good. This is pretty good. I like this. So you got billboards, billboards back and forth on the water, right?
Chaz: Right.
Shubh: So okay, Chaz, Stratford is on, uh, by a river. Is that right?
Chaz: Yeah, beautiful river. Shout out to the Avon River.
Shubh: Yeah. You guys really did just... You identity thefted the actual Stratford's whole deal, right?
Chaz: Mm-hmm.
Shubh: It's on the river. Yeah. Stratford upon Avon. Yeah. You're just like, "Hey."
Philippe: Shout out Shakespeare.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Shout out Shakespeare. We have,
Chaz: yeah.
Shubh: He, he shout
Chaz: out- We have a fake Shakespeare buried in our cemetery.
Shubh: Shout out my friend Haysam, who's- Seriously?
Chaz: No.
Shubh: He's, he's directing, uh, well, Chaz and I put this [00:36:00] together, the Shakespeare on the...
What's it called? Shakespeare...
Chaz: The theater? The-
Shubh: What is the festival called? Festival
Chaz: Theatre.
Shubh: What? That's- It's called the
Chaz: Festival Theatre ... that's what it's called.
Shubh: That whole festival's called that?
Chaz: That, well, there's a couple theaters in town, but-
Shubh: But there's like a summer Shakespeare thing in Stratford, yeah?
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: So, um, a friend of mine is directing Othello out there- Mm-hmm ... at the Stratford-
Chaz: Yeah ...
Shubh: place. So all you Stratford listeners out there- Yeah ... go see the play. What
Chaz: happens
Philippe: in, in Othello?
Chaz: I haven't seen it yet, but I'm- Well, I know what- ... gonna go this summer.
Shubh: I do know what happens in the Denzel Washington, uh, movie version.
Chaz: They did that?
Shubh: I'm pretty sure they did, yeah.
Chaz: Damn. What happened? What happened? Are you gonna tell us
Shubh: or Yeah, I don't, I don't, I don't totally remember and now I'm worried-
Philippe: It's not, it's... You can spoil this one. I just wanna- You just
Shubh: wanna- No, no, I'm, I'm not worried about spoiling Othello.
Philippe: You just can't remember?
Shubh: Yeah. Somebody... There's like a... Somebody betrays somebody else. Well, there's always betrayal. There's two guys. It was a betrayal of some kind.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Man, I don't have it.
Philippe: I, I was just watching The Godfather the other day, which is a movie I love- Yeah ... I adore. Oh, my God. It's the best- Did
Chaz: you [00:37:00] just say you were watching The Godfather, which is a movie?
Shubh: Wait, hold on. Can I-
Philippe: No, which is a movie I adore.
Shubh: Oh,
Philippe: yeah, yeah. Oh, okay. Sorry.
Shubh: Yeah. But also- I think providing context. ... it would be a great pi- uh, also would be a great play. So just imagine it's Stratford, right?
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh, let's say one of the plays isn't getting enough, uh, tickets sold.
Chaz: Mm-hmm.
Shubh: And you're driving into work, scootering into work, riding into work, riding your bike into work.
Chaz: Mm-hmm.
Shubh: And suddenly a little billboard floats by on the river.
Chaz: Yeah. "
Shubh: Tickets now," big QR code.
Chaz: Mm.
Shubh: Boom, theater's sold out. I'm just saying, guys- That is- ... the water feels like the last bastion of, uh, unsullied advertising.
Chaz: I... Yeah. I do think that a river would be a little bit more functional for something like that.
Like, I don't
Shubh: know how- Well, here's, here's the problem with a river.
Chaz: What?
Shubh: You can only go one way. Right? Lake, you can just go back and forth. And you need a little- Like- ... back and forth ...
Chaz: just driving around
Shubh: in circles- Back and forth ... on the lake? Yeah. Yeah. Couple... It's, I mean, the gas is expensive, I'll tell you that.
We rented a boat while we were out there.
Philippe: What if- Oh, my God.
Shubh: Filling
Philippe: the boat with gas.
Shubh: [00:38:00] Yeah. That'll get you. But I'm just saying- Yeah ... like, if you could work it so it was like a little bit of a sail, you know, you just go back and forth on the lake.
Philippe: Yeah. Wh- wh- what kind of boat did you guys get?
Shubh: Uh, a pontoon.
Oh. A
Philippe: pontoon. Yeah.
Shubh: Yep. Put the kids in a, in a, a, a, like a little... What are these things called? You know the floaty that you tie to the back of it?
Chaz: Tube?
Shubh: Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. Woo. Uh- These
Chaz: guys clearly didn't grow up in the Muskoka ...
Shubh: kids were on the tube. Yep. Gun the thing as, uh, to its maximum of 25 miles per hour.
Yeah.
Chaz: They're, yeah.
Shubh: And, uh, burned a lot of gas in two hours- Ooh ... 'cause literally we were running at full throttle the entire time- Yeah ... so the kids could tube.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh, but it was a lot of fun. They
Philippe: had fun though? Oh, they were tubing on the back of that joint?
Shubh: Yeah. Big time.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: Oh, shit.
Shubh: Yeah, they had a ride.
Chaz: You can do anything on a pontoon. They're the perfect boat.
Shubh: I
Philippe: disagree.
Shubh: Could you, could you, could you, could you put a, could you put a- No, they're
Philippe: sick. What do you mean?
Shubh: Well, wait. Philippe, hold on. No. You are from the land of a thousand lakes. Uh- Ish.
Philippe: Ish. Yeah. Yeah. Lake of the Woods, uh-
Shubh: There, there- ...
Philippe: 14,000 [00:39:00] islands
Shubh: lot of lakes in, in Manitoba- Yeah ... is what I'm saying. Don't you feel like some of these lakes, a little floating billboard
Philippe: Would be great.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Well, that's what I'm saying about the fish. If I could pull-
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: I'm always pulling up fish.
Shubh: Well, why don't we try, I, you know, Tech Thursday, what if you got a, if you got a lighter, you know, lighter ticket sales on the docket?
Maybe it's not, uh... Maybe the, uh, the topic's not as hot, right?
Chaz: Or it's a fish-related topic.
Shubh: Or it's a fish- Or, yeah. You just run a little billboard down the Bow River, the Elbow River, either river. Actually, the Elbow River, right? A lot of rich people live along the Elbow River.
Chaz: Is there multiple rivers in Calgary?
Shubh: There are. There's
Chaz: two, and
Shubh: they
Chaz: meet.
Shubh: The, the Elbow River's not, I mean, it's not a big river though, right?
Chaz: Hmm.
Philippe: Um, well, right now it's pretty big.
Shubh: All right. All right. She's in flood. Now it's pretty big.
Philippe: Oh, shit.
Shubh: So I'm just saying, uh, billboards on lakes.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: That's my idea. And then I thought of another idea.
Billboards [00:40:00] in space So people who are looking at, through telescopes, right? They're doing some space watching. That's what it's called, space watching, I believe.
Chaz: Okay.
Shubh: Uh, oh, hey, billboard for a better telescope just floats by.
Chaz: Hmm. What do you think about that idea? I think that one might be worse than the lake idea.
And I didn't really think it could get much worse, but-
Shubh: I think the... Oh, sorry. Okay, the space one, I just wanted to take your temperature. Yeah, okay, we won't do that one. I do think the billboards on the lakes is a really good idea.
Chaz: Who, who owns the lakes?
Shubh: What do you mean?
Chaz: Like how-
Shubh: The man, the man owns the lake.
Chaz: Yeah, would you have to pay the government?
Shubh: Yeah, like- But hold on. If I just happen to be, have a boat on the... I can have a boat on the lake, yeah? I
Chaz: guess.
Shubh: I can have a motorized vehicle on the lake?
Chaz: Yeah, I don't know
Shubh: if there's- Well, who's to say that motorized vehicle doesn't have a giant bo- billboard on the side of it?
Philippe: Hmm. Well, I feel like people kinda already do this with, um, you know, when you're at really busy beaches, people will fly planes-
Shubh: [00:41:00] That's what I'm saying. That's the- ... with billboards on them ... they're skywriting. Yeah, they fly the planes. But- Buses have this stuff on the side of them.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: I've kinda seen this in popular places.
You can have boats, like in, uh, Stockholm, for example, in the harbor, you'll have boats with big LED screens just going up and down, and they're just advertising.
Chaz: You didn't even think of LED screens, did you?
Shubh: Oh, of course I did. Night, night billboards.
Philippe: Night billboards. That would be, oh my God. Well, that's
Chaz: definitely not safe.
Philippe: Imagine that at Muskoka. No, but if you could- Yeah, bleeped would run the fucking boat. Okay, cut that. Cut
Chaz: that.
Shubh: He's not a litigious fella. I'm gonna keep that joke in with the beeps, though. The beeps. Just so I know it's
Philippe: still in. Let me just, let me just say one thing about bleeped. He was driving the boat. Oh
my God. What the fuck? I've done a lot of night driving, and he was driving-
Shubh: Here's how that's gonna sound played back. Beepity beep, beep, beep, beep. Uh, okay, so LEDs on this boat, LEDs on my billboard s- even [00:42:00] sounds like a better idea. But I do need help with a name for this.
Chaz: Okay.
Shubh: Uh, I, I had sailboard.
Billboat.
Chaz: Billboat. Billboat is it.
Shubh: Billboat is the winner, isn't it? Yeah. Billboat Baggins. Billboat. Billboat is great. I love it. What if- Okay. Oh, yeah ...
Chaz: would, would- Like, we're talking a pretty substantial size billboard, right?
Shubh: Um, I don't know.
Chaz: Like, it would have to be pretty big for it to be effective, no?
Shubh: I think just a, like a regular billboard size.
Chaz: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But- Yeah ... I mean, billboards are pretty big.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chaz: Wouldn't y- wouldn't you be worried about, like, capsizing or anything like that?
Shubh: What about me makes you think I know anything about boats?
Chaz: Well, my initial thought when you s- like, I'm literally just picturing, like, a normal boat- Yeah ... with just a massive billboard going length- Yeah
wise across it. Yeah. And then my next thought was, okay, it's just gonna f- flip the boat.
Shubh: Oh, okay. Well then- ... s- I could just get an old houseboat. You know, in, uh, uh, in the Shuswap they always have- Oh, yeah ... these houseboating companies. Yeah. Just get an old [00:43:00] houseboat and I'll just bolt the billboard to
Chaz: the side.
Yeah, okay, then. Can I do that? Or a pontoon.
Shubh: Yeah, pontoon.
Chaz: Okay. You might be onto something. Billboats.
Shubh: Billboats. I think it's a million-dollar idea.
Chaz: I wouldn't- No. $100,000 idea. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah, but if I do- It's not ... if I do 10 times as many billboards. What do you think a billboard costs, though? What's a regular... You ever looked into this?
Chaz: What do you mean? It depends where, doesn't it?
Shubh: Yeah, but give me like a, a high traffic billboard.
Chaz: Like Times Square.
Shubh: Nah, no. Too, too far. Too far. Let's say those Kelowna billboards over the bridge. Yeah. What do we think those cost?
Philippe: Like, to install or to, to-
Shubh: No, no, no. To rent a, like, to put your ad on the billboard for a month.
Philippe: Oh, I don't know.
Shubh: It's gotta be between, I think at the low end, three grand.
Philippe: Mm-hmm.
Shubh: And at the high end, 25, 30.
Chaz: Yeah, I think 30 would even be kinda steep maybe, but-
Shubh: You guys tell me I, um, 1,000 bucks a day for a billboat Change your mind about a million dollar idea?
Chaz: Well[00:44:00]
Shubh: It's only 1,000 days. Yep.
Philippe: What is the math on this? Um, yeah, I mean, if, if you're just running one boat at $1,000, uh, on the Kelowna Lake, I mean, how pissed would they be if you were running that boat at night? That'd be so funny.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. Or, well, I mean, that, that... There might be some rules about that.
Chaz: Definitely.
Shubh: But then I would just, uh... Oh, I just had a really good idea. You know those, um, trucks that go in the water, and then they're boats?
Philippe: Amphibious.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. They're like little tour, tour things. Yeah. It's gonna be one of those, and at night I'm just driving up and down Lake Shore Drive, 'cause every place has a Lake Shore Drive.
Yeah. Just driving up and down Lake Shore with my LED billboard.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: And then when they try and pull you over, you jump in, you jump in
Shubh: the lake. Then I get, then I get right back in that lake.
Chaz: Perfect plan.
Shubh: Yeah. And then they call the guy- With the headlights. ... then they call, then they call the boat cops.
Boat cops come, boom, I'm back [00:45:00] on shore. Hmm. Okay. Except I'm on the other shore.
Chaz: You might be onto something there.
Shubh: They can't get me. They can never get me.
Chaz: But that's gonna really increase the overhead, isn't it? Like, I think if you're just buying a boat, it's probably significantly cheaper than-
Shubh: I do think there's lots of amphibious tour buses that have been decommissioned- Okay
because the amusement park went out of business. That I- '
Chaz: Cause they didn't think of bill boats ...
Shubh: that, 'cause then I can get them for a song.
Chaz: Okay. I don't know
Philippe: Yeah, I mean, if that's true, I should be having an amphibious truck. That'd be so fun
Shubh: Why don't you have an amphibious- Just
Chaz: whip around town?
Philippe: Just to whip around town.
I mean, like, the commute for me to Lake of the Woods, fly to Winnipeg- Yeah ... get in a car- Yeah ... get in a boat.
Shubh: Yep.
Philippe: And then you get- You gotta
Shubh: drive all the way around
Philippe: So-
Shubh: If you got an
Chaz: amphib- Do
Philippe: you have to take a boat to where you're going?
Shubh: Yeah If you got an amphibious boat with a giant Tech Thursday billboard on the side- Oh Right
you could write the whole thing off.
Philippe: Write it all off.
Chaz: It'll pay for itself.
Shubh: Yep.
Chaz: Well- It'll
Philippe: be
Chaz: making money
Philippe: It'd be making money.
Shubh: Is there, is there a Winnipeg outfit [00:46:00] for Tech Thursday?
Philippe: Yeah, there is
Chaz: It's
Philippe: gonna be an expensive flight, baby
Shubh: You guys ever done a, an event out at Lake of the Woods?
Philippe: Uh, no.
Shubh: Oh.
Philippe: It's a sacred place.
Shubh: But is it too sacred for bill boats?
Chaz: Yes.
Shubh: Oh. Okay, so I'm not hearing as much support as I was hoping for my billboard, floating billboard idea.
Chaz: I don't like messing with the water, man.
Shubh: You came up with a, you came up with an idea where you would, you would work in an office in the water.
Chaz: Aquadesk. Yeah. But, well, that's more for, like, pools.
Shubh: Okay. So you don't like messing with natural water?
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: So if you were out there in Muskoka and you were putzing around on your, I don't know- Aquadesk? What
Chaz: are you doing?
Shubh: You're putzing around on your-
Chaz: I'm not going to Muskoka this summer. It's very sad.
Philippe: Why?
Shubh: Oh, no. What happened?
Chaz: Just not going to that cottage anymore.
Philippe: Damn. Oh,
Chaz: no. Yeah.
Shubh: What
Chaz: happened? Sucks. I haven't really had any good cottage trips.
Shubh: Did you, uh, did you get uninvited?
Chaz: Uh, yeah, pretty much.
Shubh: Did you, [00:47:00] did you ... 'Cause of something you did?
Chaz: Pardon?
Shubh: Did you light a fire? No.
Philippe: What
Chaz: happened? No, no.
Shubh: Did-
Chaz: No, we just, our, we
Shubh: have- Did you spill red wine on a white carpet?
Chaz: What?
Shubh: Did you spill red wine on a white carpet?
Chaz: No, I don't drink red wine. No, we have... So we have, like, a, we have a family cottage up kind of, kind of near the Muskokas. Um, but it had been rented out, like, the past, like, four or five summers. So we would just rent a different cottage, like, actually in the Muskokas that was way better than our family cottage.
Shubh: Okay, yeah.
Chaz: Um, but now we're just going to the family cottage this summer, which is kind of a bummer, 'cause it's a lot further and not quite as nice, so. Oh,
Shubh: okay.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: So you are still going to the Muskokas?
Chaz: I don't think we're- I don't think Peyton and I are gonna go, 'cause w- it's, they're, everyone's going up the weekend that we come home from here.
Right. Like, next weekend, and I don't really wanna do that drive.
Philippe: Yeah. How long is it?
Chaz: It's, like, five and a half hours. Oh. And we'd be going for, like, the weekend, so it's-
Philippe: That's brutal.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: No. How far- The Muskokas are far, too, right? [00:48:00]
Chaz: From us, yeah, it's, like, three, four hours, depending on where you're going.
Philippe: Yeah.
Chaz: Um, but I don't know. Yeah, it's just not really worth it, especially for the weekend.
Like, Okay. So my question was- Yeah ... if you were up in the Muskokas and you were chilling out on the boat-
Yeah
Shubh: and then a billboard boat floated by, you're saying your reaction would be pretty negative?
Chaz: Oh, yeah.
Shubh: What if you were in on it, though?
Chaz: Like, if I was getting money from-
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah, what if you... Like, let's say we franchised Bill Boat, Bill Boat out, and you ran the Muskoka franchise.
Chaz: I'd like to think I have more integrity than that, but-
but depending on how big the check is.
Shubh: I mean- You know what, uh, uh, putting a billboard up is probably not that much different from putting up wallpaper, right? You gotta spray it, and you gotta roll it on.
Chaz: Yeah, like, physically, yeah.
Shubh: I'm just saying, dual purpose, right? A little side gig for you.
Chaz: Yeah, I guess.
I think there's-
Shubh: You're saying on principle you don't believe I should be putting billboards on the water?
Chaz: I just don't [00:49:00] like that idea very much. It's like, feels like sacrilegious.
Philippe: Yeah. I think this is a goose egg for me.
Shubh: You're giving it zero?
Philippe: I'm giving it a zero. Oh. A zero salsas.
Shubh: Yeah, well, the thing
Chaz: that- Well, I think, I think there's a time and a place for it.
Oh, okay. Like, I... So, like are you guys familiar with Grand Bend? Grand Bend.
Shubh: I don't know
Chaz: what you just said, no. Grand Bend. It's on Lake Ontar- or Lake Huron, sorry. Yep. And so it's, like, a pretty busy lake with, like, like, the beaches are always packed and whatnot. Yeah. Like, I think a place like that-
Shubh: Yeah
Chaz: where there's already a lot of stuff going on, you could maybe do some capitalism there.
Shubh: Yeah, like Wai- Waikiki Beach.
Chaz: But-
Shubh: So you don't want me to ruin, like, a serene setting?
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Okay. Well, I would... Listen, why would I put a billboard in a serene place anyway?
Chaz: There's no o- Well, did this not start with this beautiful view of Lake Kelowna?
But-
Shubh: Yeah, but if you were in Kelowna or you were driving over this bridge, you'd understand.
Chaz: Oh, okay.
Shubh: There's a lot of people. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The billboard model doesn't work unless there's, like, a shitload of people.
Chaz: No, for sure. That's
Shubh: what I mean. So I'm putting these billbo- billboats at [00:50:00] Waikiki Beach.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh, well, I'm not putting them at all the beaches I like in Hawaii.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Um- Yeah ... you know, on the, uh, the S- the Seine River. Am I saying that right?
Philippe: Uh, Le Seine.
Shubh: The Seine. Le Seine. I'm not, I'm not, uh, you know, I'm putting one there. Have you ever seen the boats that go down fucking Paris? They're just a bunch of big tour boats with a- Mm
bunch of big phone numbers and shit on the side. Yeah, yeah. I'm just saying, fellas. I
Chaz: wouldn't give it a zero, but Well, what's the- It's still not very high.
Shubh: I'm just saying-
Philippe: Because I think it also already exists in those places.
Chaz: I think so too.
Shubh: Oh.
Chaz: Did
Philippe: you do any re-
Chaz: You were just saying- Did you do any research?
Shubh: No, I drove by some billboards, and then I was on a boat, and I was like, "Oh, man, put your hands together," Shubh. Oh.
Chaz: That
Shubh: was the extent of the research I
Philippe: did. That is better, that is better than what I did, which, for this, in terms of prep for this episode.
Chaz: Yeah, that's true. That
Philippe: is a lot more
Chaz: work than I did as well.
Philippe: I was trying to come up with some things, and I couldn't.
Shubh: Well, I did have another idea.
Chaz: Okay.
Shubh: Um- Let's hear it. But I, w- wanted to workshop with you guys for a while.
Chaz: Okay.
Shubh: And I probably should've led with this [00:51:00] one, 'cause I think it's better. I'll
Chaz: lead with the shitty one.
Shubh: So you know how I was, uh, I'm always telling you guys I'm kinda like, you know, l- an extra dad for both of you, right?
And you both- That's right. An extra dad, you know? I'm always giving you dad advice. Yeah. You know? Then I was like, what if there was an app that was just me giving you people dad advice?
Chaz: Oh, okay.
Philippe: Could Coach Shubh
Shubh: It would be called Dad.AI Dad dot- DaDai
Chaz: DaDai?
Philippe: Why would it have to be A- why would it have to be AI?
Chaz: Dad dot-
Shubh: But because I can't be everywhere at once. Oh, you think you want a direct line into me?
Philippe: Yeah.
Chaz: That's kind of what I was
Shubh: thinking. Oh, okay. Coach Shubh is better-
Chaz: You basically just FaceTime with your phone number.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So you're looking at apartments, right? You could just Face- call me.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: I mean, it's a subscript- uh, no, how do I monetize this if it's not an app though? Yeah,
Chaz: you pay, you pay- Rec- ... like a, like a sex hotline. You pay per second or whatever.
Philippe: Yeah. It's like
Shubh: the opposite of a sex hotline.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: Or it could be like a- Yeah. ... a live stream on Cam, you know?
Shubh: Okay, so let's say I set this up.
What would you guys call me about?
Philippe: Um... [00:52:00] I gotta be honest, I have a dad.
Shubh: Okay,
Philippe: but no, your dad- I can't stress enough how much I don't see him as a father ... your,
Shubh: your dad travels a lot.
Philippe: Uh-
Shubh: Right? Travels to some faraway places.
Philippe: Okay, yeah.
Shubh: So he's unavailable.
Philippe: He's always unavailable.
Shubh: He's got no... He's, he's, he's physically unavailable, not just emotionally unavailable.
He's unavailable. You're in a pinch. Uh, what do you call me about?
You live in a condo, so you got less to call me about.
Philippe: Yeah, that's right.
Shubh: If you had a house, you'd be, be like, "Shubh, uh, I don't think my furnace is working."
Philippe: I, I usually only ever call my dad if I have a big purchase and I want him to help me rationalize it.
Shubh: Okay, what's the last one you called him about?
Philippe: Um, I think it was about a chair, an accent chair in my home.
Shubh: And he said?
Philippe: He said... It wasn't very helpful. He said, uh, "Life is about decisions."
Chaz: Whoa.
Shubh: Okay, so-
Chaz: Profound.
Philippe: Profound. I have to say, like- I
Shubh: mean, first of all, that is- "
Philippe: You make
Shubh: your
Philippe: own choices."
Shubh: Yeah. That is, that- You gotta figure it out ... that [00:53:00] is actually incredible parenting.
Right. But here's exactly why I think this app works. I don't need to worry about setting you up for, like, future success, 'cause that's very similar feedback I would give to my own kids, right? If they were like, "Hey, uh, Dad, can you just tell me what to do?" I'd be like, "Listen, I can't make that decision for you."
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: But in this case, I would totally make the decision for you. You call me, show me the chair, I'd be, "Philippe, what the fuck?"
Philippe: Oh, it don't fit.
Shubh: What are you, what are you doing? You cannot afford that. Why do you need an accent chair?
Philippe: Yeah. Yeah.
Shubh: Are you gonna sit in that chair? Have you sat in that ch- did you buy it?
Philippe: No, I didn't buy it.
Shubh: If you had bought it, would you be sitting in it right now?
Philippe: Well, definitely when I have guests. I just have a really shitty dining room chair that's there.
Shubh: Just
Philippe: one? An accent chair would be... Well, no- What- ... I have four dining room chairs, but I have one where, in the place of an accent chair.
It's
Chaz: like- What's an accent chair?
Philippe: It's like a nice poofy... It's like what they just bought for Purelend. So you
Shubh: got couches.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Love seats. Yeah. You're, you're familiar with those. An accent chair is just a chair that would sit in a sitting area.
Chaz: Okay.
Shubh: It can be anything. It can look like anything.
Chaz: [00:54:00] So what would be the difference between an accent chair and just a chair?
Shubh: Uh, yeah, see, this is what you'd be calling me for. Well,
Chaz: all chairs,
Shubh: all chairs are- And you'd be like, "Peyton, uh... Hey, Shubh, I'm out at the furniture store. Peyton said I should go look at accent chairs."
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: So if it's not a dining chair and it's not a couch or a love seat, pretty much an accent chair.
Philippe: Okay.
Shubh: It's just a chair. All
Philippe: accent chairs are chairs, but not all chairs are accent chairs.
Shubh: Boom. It's a chair that accents, accents the other furniture in your space.
Chaz: Okay. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. It is just a fancy name for a chair, though.
Chaz: Yeah. Like, there's nothing special about these chairs?
Shubh: Uh, no, they don't have accents.
Chaz: Are you gonna do one or...?
Shubh: No. No, I think I, I think earlier that if a chair was trying to say, "Worcester," that's how it would've said it, right?
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Wor-sh-sh-sh-shire, 'cause chairs don't have mouths. Um, okay, so you would not call me ever, is what you're saying, for, for this type of [00:55:00] help, even if your dad was, uh, was, uh-
Chaz: Well, it depends how much you're charging.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Well, well, that's why I wanted it to be an app originally, so I wouldn't have to take the calls directly.
Chaz: And that's how the AI works. So how, how do you picture it? How does the AI-
Shubh: Yeah, well, it's just a, it just, it, it takes everything that I know about you-
Chaz: Yeah ...
Shubh: and everything in how I operate.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: And then you can ratchet up, like, "Hey, I need to, I need to be pushed a little today, so I'm gonna, I'm gonna tune that up." Mm-hmm. I'm gonna be like, "Shubh needs to be like difficult dad."
Chaz: Mm.
Shubh: Right? Uh, "You know what? Today I just need supportive dad. I need a dad who will tell me to make my own decisions." Mm. I'm gonna pop that open.
Chaz: And the user controls these settings?
Shubh: Yeah.
Chaz: Okay.
Shubh: Yeah. Yep. And but-
Philippe: I don't think the u- user should control this
Shubh: But, uh, so- Yeah, it seems
Chaz: unhealthy ...
Shubh: so you're saying if, if I, I just adjust based on the tone of your, your questions.
Chaz: Okay.
Shubh: So maybe we go that route. So- Yeah,
Chaz: that, that would work.
Philippe: I think, yeah, it should learn- So if you're-
to re- re- respond based on [00:56:00] what it starts to learn about you.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chaz: So it's- And also, like, how often you're using it and, like, things like that
Shubh: Yeah, and what you're generally calling about.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: And, uh-
Philippe: Yeah, so, like, if it thinks that you have daddy issues, for example.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Well, I don't know if I love the
Well, not- It
Chaz: should
Philippe: be a little bit more supportive That's gonna be the
Chaz: majority of the
Shubh: users Yeah, yeah. I was hoping it would be like- That's really easy ... I was hoping it'd be like, "Hey, my hot water tank is leaking." Are you, you wanna drop some more stuff?
Philippe: Yeah. Do you have
Chaz: anything else
Shubh: to drop? Yeah, yeah.
Uh, uh, like, "Your hot water tank's leaking." Yeah. "Where can I get a spigot for my water tank on-" Yeah ... you know, with no,
Philippe: uh,
Shubh: short
Chaz: notice. But how is that, where is the fatherly advice for that coming? Ca- Isn't that something you can just Google or ask a normal AI? Yeah. I
Shubh: don't know. Has it ever happened to you?
Or, or like- If it's never happened to you, you don't know, I'm telling you. Well, you- When your hot water tank spigot blows, fellas, I guarantee you, you're gonna be, you're gonna remember this conversation. You're gonna be like, "Shit, I better call Shubh." Dad.
Philippe: Or are you just saying that, uh, AI is becoming all of our fathers?
Shubh: I'm just saying, um, [00:57:00] partially true, but I'm just saying the, you know, there's, there's learned experience sometimes, right? Mm-hmm. Situations you've found yourselves in. Yeah. Sometimes that you're just like, "Hey, would be nice to know if I could get, uh, if I could, if I could sanity check this." I think the accent chair is a great example.
Chaz: Hmm.
Shubh: Not should I buy this accent chair. See, Phil's a little more maybe on the, uh... The AI would know he's a bit more sophisticated when it comes to interior design.
Chaz: Hmm.
Shubh: When Chaz checked it out, it'd be like, "Oh, he doesn't know what an accent chair is." Right?
Philippe: That's fair.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: One time, uh, this is another thing my dad told me once.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Um, I was packing to move to Calgary, and I had packed his o- old sort of teak set.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Mid-century modern, uh, sort of kitchen table- Yeah ... chairs, which is the chair I have in my living room. Uh, mid-century modern credenza. And then I packed a, um, a, a, a, a really [00:58:00] old, like, full unit, uh, record player, which I still have.
Yeah. And it still works.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: And my dad pulls me aside and he goes, "You can't put American Baroque in the same room as mid-century modern."
Chaz: Oh, my.
Shubh: Your dad is- Amazing ...
Philippe: so pretentious.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chaz: Any decorating tips from your dad, I'm
Shubh: definitely- So did you put everything... Did you put that stuff in two different rooms?
Philippe: No, in the same room. Don't give a fuck.
Shubh: And every time, every time he comes to visit, does he just, like, shake his head?
Philippe: Yeah, he's like, "What is going on?" No, it actually, it goes really well together, I think.
Shubh: You'd think.
Philippe: But then I got a live edge, I made a live edge, uh, coffee table, and it's also in that room.
So- You
Shubh: made a coffee table?
Philippe: I made a coffee table.
Shubh: What do you mean?
Philippe: I bought wood. There's a place- Like you
Shubh: assembled it from IKEA?
Philippe: No, there, there's a place in Winnipeg called Urban Lumber-
Shubh: Okay ...
Philippe: which has, like, cuts of trees that have fallen within the city limits of Winnipeg.
Shubh: Okay.
Philippe: So I bought this piece of wood.
I flew it to Calgary. I sanded it, stained it, [00:59:00] put legs on it, bought legs, put them on, and, uh, now it's in my living room.
Chaz: Whoa.
Philippe: It's a very nice piece.
Chaz: Wow.
Shubh: I did not know you had this in you. Yeah?
Chaz: I didn't either. Where did you do all the s- sanding and staining?
Philippe: Um,
Shubh: yeah. Now, now Chaz is interested.
Philippe: There you go.
That's right. Well, okay, I actually, I actually did that in, I sanded it and stained it in Winnipeg.
Chaz: Yeah.
Philippe: And then I flew with it, which was remarkable. And the lady at WestJet- She wasn't- Wait, how
Shubh: big is this thing?
Philippe: It's, it's big, but she wasn't looking when I put it on the weight scale, so I held it up a little bit.
And, uh, I got it on there for free.
Chaz: Oh, my.
Shubh: And it made it damage-free.
Philippe: Damage-free. It looks great.
Shubh: Huh.
Chaz: Wow.
Shubh: You made your own table.
Philippe: I put it in a big hockey bag.
Shubh: Oh, that's incredible.
Chaz: That is incredible.
Shubh: What do you made? You ever made any furniture, Chaz?
Philippe: Tonight or what?
Chaz: Maybe after the beaches.
Philippe: After the beaches.
Shubh: Uh- I [01:00:00] still am, I'm, like, having a little bit of trouble over, like- Philippe made his own table?
Philippe: Yeah. People didn't think I was a handyman, but I am a handyman.
Chaz: He's wearing Carhartt head to toe. He should be able to put something together.
Philippe: I'm doubled up on Carhartt. I was... I got two things Carhartt- ... boots, a hat, and I was walking around Home Depot today.
Come on. But what
Shubh: were you, what were you buy- In my Ford Ranger ... what were, what, what were you buying, though? Plants. You drive a Ford Ranger? Yeah, I drive a Ford Ranger. Hell yeah.
Yeah.
Philippe: It's manual too.
Shubh: What, what year
Philippe: is it? Uh, no, it's not lifted. That would be tight, though. Yeah.
Shubh: It's an '06? It's
Philippe: an '06.
Chaz: Hell yeah.
Shubh: You, you gotta check it out.
Philippe: You probably have. I hardly... You know, when I used to live in, in Winnipeg or worse, in Montreal, I was a soft boy, so soft.
Chaz: Well-
Philippe: I was a real soy boy, you
Chaz: know?
And now, now you're not 'cause you have a Ford Ranger?
Philippe: Well, now I live in Alberta. I have a Ford Ranger and cowboy boots, cowboy- Making
Shubh: your own tables.
Philippe: Making my own tables. Wow. I've just become a different human being here. Wow.
Shubh: [01:01:00] Yeah. Huh.
Philippe: I have different political beliefs, I'll say
Shubh: as well.
Chaz: Yeah, well,
Shubh: fuck it.
They're mostly about furniture.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Um, okay. Well, I don't really have any more on that idea. That was just something I was thinking about. Just call me for, uh, advice, but call my app for advice.
Philippe: I think people would utilize it. That might be a 50 salsa idea. Yeah.
Chaz: I
Shubh: think,
Chaz: yeah. Okay. It's definitely better than-
Shubh: And then I could advertise it with my BillBoat
What? Yeah, I don't know.
Philippe: The serenity, you know?
Shubh: That was the most just defeated I've seen you ever look. He's just like he's not gonna let that go. I've done all I can. Uh, okay, so the dad, the dad app, the dad AI, Coach Shubh.
Chaz: Coach Shubh is a better name.
Shubh: I think I like it better too, because then- Yeah
I don't want the... I don't- I'm not comfortable with the daddy issue sort of thing that we've, we- Well, it's- ... we've talked about ... [01:02:00]
Chaz: still gonna be your main demographic, I think.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah, 'cause I'm thinking about when I call my dad, it's usually, like, about the furnace, right? Mm-hmm. Or, uh, or the furnace, or I'm touring a house, and I'm like, "Should I buy this house?"
Mm-hmm. "Should, or should I move into this apartment?"
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: But I don't do that as much anymore 'cause now I'm a grown-up.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: And I've, I've done all those things a few times, you know?
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: You know, buying a car. You ever bought a car? The first time you buy a car-
Chaz: Yeah ...
Shubh: who do you call? You call a parent.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Right?
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Just saying, you'd call me.
Chaz: True.
Shubh: And I'd ask Rita what to do.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: I'd be like, "Talk to Rita." She... That, oh, that, that's actually what the app should just do. Yeah. Be like, it should just ask Rita what her, what she thinks.
Chaz: Mm-hmm. Yeah. '
Shubh: Cause that's probably better advice.
Chaz: Well, most certainly better
Shubh: advice.
Yeah.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Definitely is. Well, Chaz. Uh, Philippe, you got anything else for Chaz? Serenity- Your last chance ever to see him in person ... like, Paladin.
Chaz: Yeah, this is mine and Philippe's first time meeting IRL- In person ... but I feel like we've known each other for so long.
Shubh: You [01:03:00] guys did hit it off right away.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: So I think that we should also start, uh, periodically, once in a while, changing the timing we do a recording so Chaz can jump on.
Philippe: Do them while you're working.
Shubh: Mm.
Chaz: If it's audio only, I could probably get away with
Shubh: that. You're listening to a podcast at work?
Chaz: I just listen to podcasts all day anyways
Shubh: while I work.
What podcasts do you listen to while you're painting?
Chaz: Uh, I'm not telling you.
Shubh: He's, he's not gonna say. He's not- Is it, is, is it, is it, is it Tech Thursday Live?
Chaz: I- no.
Philippe: What is it? What do you listen to?
Chaz: They're not appropriate, so I'm not saying.
Philippe: They're not even appropriate?
Shubh: What does that even mean? Are you
Chaz: What
Philippe: do you mean inappropriate live
Shubh: casts? What are you listening to, smut podcasts?
Chaz: They're not ... No, they're not smut. They're just not very PC. I guess we're in Alberta, so you guys aren't very PC out here anyway. That's right. Yeah. I don't know. I just like... I listen to, like, comedy podcasts- Ah ... that are just stupid.
Shubh: Like Kill Tony? Like Bill Burr?
Chaz: Kinda like Kill Tony. Not Bill Burr. I c- no. I couldn't li- I could not listen to one person talk for an hour. That would- Yeah ... drive me nuts, no. Good. There's [01:04:00] usually three hosts, three comedians typically. Yep. And they're just riffing.
Philippe: Hm. Oh, wow, and they say vile thi- You're not even gonna tell us the name?
Chaz: I'll tell you off air if you really wanna know. Yeah, do it. But not, not-
Shubh: Yeah, now I'm, like, very curious. I was like- Yeah ...
Chaz: but yeah, we could do that. If you guys wanna just call me while I'm working, we could record. We could bang out a podcast probably.
Shubh: Um, I wanna come out to Stratford, though.
Chaz: You should.
Shubh: Yeah. I think you should build a... Uh, was, was Tech Thursday not in Stratford?
Chaz: Yeah, that's a great question.
Philippe: Soon. Maybe not in Stratford, but-
Shubh: Toronto?
Philippe: Toronto.
Shubh: Ooh.
Chaz: Toronto?
Philippe: So yeah. We'll just have to- Why not Waterloo?
Shubh: What?
Philippe: Well, why not Waterloo? Yeah. We might, but there's a lot of people in Waterloo, and it's a small ecosystem.
We'll, we can talk about it more offsite. Ninis.
Shubh: Uh, it's true. He'll say all that other shit on air, but he won't talk about...
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh, honestly, guys, and when we get off air, he's gonna be like, "Well, the thing about Waterloo is it's, uh, you know, it's a tiny bit played out. Um- ... [01:05:00] you know, there's already Communitech there, so, um-"
Philippe: Oh.
Right. You think- That's the- ... you think when I'm on air, I get this potty mouth?
Shubh: Yeah, that- ... he want that off air.
Chaz: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Shubh: But what he wants on air is...
Chaz: Fuck bleeped.
Philippe: bleeped was driving that boat.
Chaz: Oh.
Shubh: Oh, Lord.
Chaz: Is he from around here?
Shubh: I sure don't think so.
Philippe: Okay. No, I think he's a Toronto boy.
Shubh: Yeah. Oh, okay. Yeah. I think he's a, one of those folks trying to adopt our sensibilities out here.
Philippe: Classic.
Shubh: But, uh- It's, uh- ... I think-
Philippe: Everybody wants to be a Berta boy ...
Shubh: everybody likes Alberta.
Philippe: That's real.
Shubh: I don't know if that's true, actually
Philippe: You know, I, you know what I say to bleeped?
Drive a mile in my arranger.
Shubh: Jesus Christ
Philippe: That was, that was a lot worse than your Worcestershire bit.
Shubh: It was hanging in there. So it was a lot [01:06:00] worse. At least I could air mine.
Chaz: Oh, my Lord.
Philippe: All right.
Shubh: Oh, so much editing I'm gonna have to do.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: All right, Chaz. Good to see you, buddy, in person. Thank you for joining us.
Philippe: Is that all?
Shubh: Well, I think so.
That was
Philippe: easy. That
Shubh: flew by. We, we keep going. Did it fly by?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Oh. I am getting out of here. It was excruciating for me, though.
Philippe: We should get out of here. I mean, we started an hour late. Oh, yeah, it's 5:30 already.
Shubh: Um, no, it was delightful having you, and thanks for coming out. Uh, do miss having you on. Yeah.
What I am not comfortable with is how many people still come on and say, "Is Chaz gonna be here?" Wow. Matt asked. Lucas asked,
Chaz: wow. "Oh, I thought Chaz was... Where's Chaz?" Shy, "Where's Chaz gonna be? Is Chaz gonna be here?" Oh, yeah. Shout out to Shy.
Shubh: I don't like that.
Chaz: I love it. That makes me wanna come back a little bit.
Shubh: Oh, then I like
Chaz: it.
Shubh: Okay, buddy. Thanks for coming out. Have fun at the last day of the Calgary Stampede today.
Chaz: Thank you.
Shubh: Philippe, you also have fun at the last day of the Calgary Stampede.
Chaz: Yuh.
Shubh: Thanks for wearing your hat. Yahoo.
Chaz: [01:07:00] Yahoo.
Shubh: Yahoo. Uh, and, uh, that's a wrap.
Chaz: That's a wrap. Sweet. Boom.
