Shubh: Uh, welcome to episode 30-something of Your Business is Online, the, uh, podcast where serious people come on and pitch unserious business ideas. Uh, also continue to be, for the 40th straight week, the number one business comedy podcast in Canada.
There's one business comedy podcast in Canada.
Philippe: Wow, very exciting.
Shubh: Yeah. Um, we are here today with Chad Hayden as our special guest, Philippe Burns, cohost. Hello. Chad, uh, thank you very much for coming in. Before we get to Chad, though, I do wanna th- thank Clark Lai, and the team at Motiv. We are in Motiv Studio [00:01:00] because Philippe, your, uh, studio you had so generously gotten us access to for many months- just was in, um, a series of more, uh, s- layers of disrepair-
Philippe: Yeah
Shubh: until finally it became- Unusable ... unusable.
Philippe: Entirely.
Shubh: To the point where you had refused several times to commute to another studio from your office, even though the studio's, what, five blocks?
Philippe: Yeah, it's-
Shubh: Four, four blocks. Yeah, yeah. You were like, "I can't, Shubh. I'm very busy." But the studio, the other studio got so bad that this time you didn't fight me at all.
You were like, "Yeah."
Philippe: Yeah, but I've also, uh, I just took, like, three weeks kind of work remote, but really I was, like, working an hour a day, and, and I had so many great ideas, and I think- Oh ... I've realized that I've been working too hard.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: So, so now, you know, I'm, I'm trying to spend less time working.
Shubh: So Chad, we'll let you talk at some point.
Chad: Yeah. Thanks for having me. I'm excited to be
Shubh: here. Yeah, yeah. We ... I think we introduce Chad, and then we'll come back to him in 20 minutes.
Chad: Yeah. Just hanging out in the corner, guys. Tell me when- ... it'll, tell me when.
Shubh: Nobody puts [00:02:00] Chad in a corner, except us. Chad, uh, tell us a bit about yourself.
Chad: Man, that's a open-ended question.
Shubh: Yeah. Tell us a bit about yourself in terms of stuff we can air.
Chad: So I was born on a Thursday. It was cold, rainy, in October- Wow ... down here in Calgary, Alberta. One of the few people born in- Yeah ... Calgary.
Shubh: But you are a, you're a real proper Alberta boy, 'cause you have, you have m- 'Cause I'm white? ... migrated throughout.
'Cause you're- 'Cause you've
Chad: never- Oh, 'cause I've- ... I've moved around Alberta. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Shubh: Have you ever left
Philippe: Alberta?
Chad: Uh, y- g- I'll get to that.
Philippe: Okay.
Chad: Like, at all? Do you mean at all? So it was a Thursday back in...
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Born in Calgary, raised in Medicine Hat.
Shubh: Yep.
Chad: Small town. The Hat. The Hat.
Shubh: Go Tigers.
Chad: Go Tigers.
If you haven't been there, it's great. If you're driving down the highway and you blink, you might miss it.
Shubh: Yep. Yep. Miss it if you- Uh, there's a Walmart in Medicine Hat, yeah?
Chad: Yeah. There's a Costco-
Shubh: I went to- ... in Medicine Hat now ... a Walmart in Medicine Hat on the way to the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 to buy a video camera-
Chad: Oh,
Shubh: shit
that [00:03:00] we could use at the Olympics before returning it on the way back.
Chad: Wow.
Shubh: Anyway. Well, that's
Philippe: scum.
Shubh: That's my, that's my Medicine Hat story. That's pretty- Anyway, continue.
Chad: Well, I'm glad the Walmart had a video camera. Went to high school in Sherwood Park.
Philippe: Okay.
Chad: The day after I graduated high school, I went and worked on the oil rigs.
Philippe: Atta boy.
Chad: This is, like, Alberta. You
Shubh: are the most- 100% ...
Chad: Albertan
Shubh: guest we've had- Yeah ... ever on this podcast. Yeah,
Chad: yeah. Like, truck in high school. You ready for it?
Philippe: What'd you have?
Chad: Short cab, long box.
Shubh: Yeah. Ooh. And you were in Sherwood Park, which for those- Yeah ... folks who aren't familiar with the Edmonton area-
Chad: Yeah
Shubh: Sherwood Park's where the refinery is. Like, it's proper- It's properly an oil and gas part of the, part of the city.
Chad: Yeah, it's quite blue collar.
Philippe: Yeah. How do you, how do you rate my truck? I got a, I just picked it up. Well, now it's been more than a year. 2006 Ford Ranger manual.
Chad: Oh, no. You're from, you must be from Ontario.
Yeah. That's a very Ontario truck. Manitoba. Yeah, yeah. It's halfway. Manitoba, okay, cool.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Chad: That's cute. But I mean, he's trying. He's trying. I appreciate it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Shubh: And you went and worked [00:04:00] right, uh, you said you went right to the oil patch. Yeah. What did you do?
Chad: I was a roughneck on a drilling rig for a couple years.
Shubh: Amazing.
Chad: I'm far too good-looking. This obviously doesn't have video, but I'm- We do
Shubh: have
Chad: video.
Philippe: Yeah, we have video now ... way
Chad: too good-looking
Shubh: to work
Chad: on
Shubh: rigs.
Chad: Yeah, hold
on
Philippe: one second. And if, for people just on audio, he's very good-looking. Yeah. He's very handsome.
Chad: So I went and worked on the rigs, and then realized right quick, like if you gotta do this your whole life, it's gonna be a hard life.
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: Rigs are hard on relationships, hard on just generally, it's a, it's a very challenging job.
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: So I went to school, got a, a diploma in petroleum engineering.
Philippe: Wow.
Chad: Which was cool.
Philippe: By the way, I think I, I can kinda relate to how hard, uh, the oil rigs are 'cause I, I worked on a, an apple farm for three months.
Chad: Yeah, picking apples? Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah. That's tough. So, so I like get it, you know?
Chad: How many people did you see die on an apple farm?
Philippe: One time the sheep escaped.
Chad: The sheep escaped from the apple farm.
Philippe: And we had to, we had to like all help kind of corral them back.
Chad: Wow. [00:05:00]
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: It's the same on the drilling rig. Yeah.
Philippe: How many- Yeah ... how many people did you see die?
Chad: Uh, I didn't see anybody die, thankfully.
Philippe: Okay. I've, I've- It's, it's the same. So it is the same.
Chad: But I've seen them get close. Yeah. Okay. Like I've seen digits, fingers get removed. Oof. I've seen fist fights. I've seen... I've showed up on the rig in a limo.
Philippe: Oh,
Chad: damn. You know? There's, there's some crazy stories. Working rigs is a, is a very interesting-
Philippe: Yeah ...
Chad: place to be. So went to school, got a diploma in petroleum engineering, moved to Denver.
Okay. And I lived in Denver for a couple years in a hotel.
Philippe: Whoa.
Chad: And I was young, and it was amazing. It was like Richie Rich.
Philippe: Oh my God, that's so fun. It's
Chad: so cool.
Philippe: Was it a dope hotel? Like, it was cool?
Chad: Yeah, yeah, right on 16th. It was, it was so cool.
Philippe: Okay, it w- so it wasn't like, it wasn't like a Motel 8 or something.
Chad: No, no, it was a legit hotel.
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: With room service 24 hours a day.
Philippe: And you could order... Was that all expensed?
Chad: 100%, yeah.
Philippe: Whoa.
Chad: Super cool. Lived there for two years, [00:06:00] lived in Houston for four years.
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: Had way too much fun in the US, and eventually came back to Calgary.
Philippe: Okay.
Chad: And I'm here now.
Philippe: Happy to be back?
Chad: Happy to be back.
Philippe: Yeah. Great town.
Shubh: So to answer your question, Philippe, Chad has left Alberta.
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: Great.
Shubh: Unequivocally.
Philippe: What truck do you drive now?
Chad: My name's Chad. That's the biggest douchebag name in the entire world.
Shubh: Yeah. It's a- What is it?
Chad: A lime green-
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Oh ... Jeep- Yep ... Wrangler.
Philippe: Let's go. Yeah. Do you Wrangler wave?
Shubh: What kind of car is the second- Yeah ... car in the
Chad: household? 100%. A Volkswagen Atlas for the kids. Okay, yeah. Three kids. It's the people mover. It's got all the, like, bike rack on the back, thing on the top to put the extra stuff in. It's, uh... Yeah, it moves the family- That's dope ... around.
Philippe: That's great.
Shubh: Um, tell us a bit about, I'm gonna probably say the name wrong, Galatea.
Chad: Yeah, nailed it. Galatea, yep.
Shubh: Yes, I was close.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: You gave me it. I said Galatea. Although I will say, and I don't want to give you any tips here-
Chad: Right ... Galatea
Shubh: does sound a scooch [00:07:00] more sophisticated than- You like that? ... Galatea, don't you think?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Galatea. We do
Chad: a bunch of work in Texas, and they actually call us Gala-tea, 'cause they're big tea people.
Shubh: Oh, Gala-tea.
Chad: Yeah, Gala- Galatea. Gala-tea
Shubh: is... So I would go Gala-tea or Galatea, depending on who your audience is.
Chad: Right.
Shubh: I like both.
Chad: I'm gonna take that back to the team.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, just workshop it.
Chad: Yeah, we'll workshop it. That'll be great. Galatea is the tallest mountain in Kananaskis. Oh. So if you lazy shits get off- Wow
your butt and go for a hike- Oh,
Shubh: that's a bit aggressive ...
Chad: tallest mountain in Kananaskis. And building a business is like that, right? The, the best views come from the hardest climbs. When we were sort of forming the company-
Shubh: Yep ...
Chad: we did a lot of hiking out in Kananaskis, and it was, uh-
Shubh: It's a good name.
Strong name.
Chad: Yeah, except for the can't pronounce it part.
Shubh: No.
Chad: Gala-tea, Galatea. Ga-
Shubh: Galatea.
Chad: So enough about that.
Shubh: No, no. What, how long ago have you... How long you been, how long has Galatea been in
Chad: business? Man, it feels like 100 years, but it's actually been seven. Yeah. July [00:08:00] 19th.
Shubh: And how are we feeling about the state of the business today?
Chad: It's a blast. Good. It's the best thing that I do. Work-life balance is bullshit when you love what you do.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Amen.
Shubh: It's just- Doesn't matter ... work is, uh, when you... People are like, "Well, you work all the time," but you're working all the time 'cause it's like your hobby. Love
Chad: it,
Shubh: yeah. It's your hobby. It's the best.
You wouldn't do it if you didn't wanna do it, right?
Chad: Yeah, I have such a great time.
Shubh: Um, well, uh, you, you might have told me this already, uh, venture-backed, bootstrapped? What are you?
Chad: Yeah, three rounds of venture capital. Yep. So the last one we did a couple years ago led by Janet Bannister. You come across her yet?
Oh, Staircase. Staircase. Staircase, yeah.
Shubh: Shout out Staircase.
Chad: She hasn't been on
Philippe: the pod yet, but we're-
Shubh: No,
Chad: I can make that happen ... gonna keep asking. Yeah, she's awesome. We
Shubh: did ask, and she said, "Ah, I don't know."
Chad: I'll fix that.
Shubh: She was like- That's not very cool ... "Ah, sounds cool, but, ah, I don't know." I was like, "That's the right
Chad: call."
She's not familiar with the Business Comedy Podcast. Yeah,
Shubh: that's right. She's like, "I don't do as many of those." Yeah. We've had a few venture capitals on, though, but not them.
Chad: Yeah, she's great. Yeah. So-
Shubh: That's awesome ...
Chad: we did a round of financing a couple Januaries ago- Yep ... and [00:09:00] now don't need it anymore.
Shubh: So if we were pitching for you right now- Yeah,
Chad: yeah
Shubh: not that you need the help.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Who am I telling to call up Galatea in this market or any market? I got one of my best friends is in Denver, ran an oil and gas company.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: What do we, what do I want, what do, what do we, what do you want them to hear right now? Two lines.
Chad: We will digitalize, optimize, and automate your logistics workflows.
Shubh: Like he was ready. Wow.
Chad: We will increase your regulatory compliance, lower your operational expenses, and automate all the bullshit that comes with it.
Philippe: Boom. That's such a sexy business.
Shubh: That was incredible.
Chad: Yeah. Yeah. It's easy. I highly recommend it.
Shubh: Yeah. So if you need to digitalize, optimize, or automate- Yeah, big
your oil field logistics business- Yeah ... you gotta call Galatea.
Philippe: I love it. That's awesome.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Or Galatea.
Chad: 1-888-GALATEA. Call.
Shubh: Is that it?
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: 188- 188, 188. Have, do you guys have a jingle? You ever done a jingle? We're pretty good at jingles.
Chad: Let's hear one. Go.
Shubh: Well, I can't now right away. I mean, you gotta think about it.
Well, you're
Chad: not that good. You go.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Galatea.
Shubh: Do you wanna hear a mouth trumpet? But can we work this mouth trumpet? [00:10:00] Yeah.
Chad: That's incredible.
Shubh: It's one of my, it's, it's my greatest skill.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: It's, uh, not monetizable, though. I did ask Rita, though, by the way, Rita's my wife. Yeah. I was like, "Hey, should I do an entire record of mouth trumpet, , covers?"
Philippe: Wow ... for like Christmas or something.
Shubh: Christmas? Yeah. And
Philippe: what did
Chad: she say?
Shubh: She was like, "Sure."
Philippe: Wow. She said sure. She's so loving and supportive.
Shubh: Yeah. But I think- Wow ... I mean, I'm not sure that she, she, I think she assumes I'm gonna spend no money on it. Right. She also said, sure, I should do this podcast.
Chad: And we're here now.
Shubh: And we're here now. Um, well listen man, well first of all, I know it sounds weird to say congratulations on your business, but, um, I think everybody who has tried to do what you're doing, to still be rolling and alive and getting customers and doing stuff, , is a hell of a thing.
Chad: It's easy. Overnight success-
Philippe: Right
Chad: no sweat. That's right. Yeah. Everybody should do it. Highly recommend it. 10
Philippe: out of 10. And- I, a- and Galatea in terms of mountain is actually kinda small in terms of all the-
Chad: [00:11:00] Right ...
Philippe: all the Rockies. On the grand
Chad: scale. Yeah.
Philippe: It's pretty easy. Yeah. Biggest
Shubh: mountain in, in, you know, a very small mountain range.
Philippe: Yeah. So yeah. Nice.
Shubh: Have I told you about my new startup? It's called K2 Everest.
Chad: I believe it's Mount Robson- Oh, is that the tallest? ... would be the tallest one, but-
Shubh: Yeah, in Canada ...
Chad: don't quote me. In Canada,
Shubh: for sure. In Canada. Yeah. I, I li- I was going-
Chad: Oh ...
Shubh: global.
Chad: That's good.
Shubh: Yeah. I just felt like Philippe-
Chad: I also don't think the tallest mountain is K2 either.
You might wanna check that.
Shubh: We both just felt a little attacked, I think, when you said- Right. ... we were, you know, we were being lazy.
Chad: Oh, I see. We're just
Shubh: like- Okay. Wait ... I think we're just lashing out.
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Just pointing out there are taller mountains.
Chad: Yeah. K2's great. You should go for a hike. You'll love it.
Shubh: Um, we got introduced to you, you and I got connected through Mark Le Dain. MLD. Friend of the show.
Chad: I thought we weren't gonna talk ab- we're talking ab- we're gonna talk about that? We're talking about that,
Philippe: yeah.
Shubh: Okay. Well, because- How you doing? ... I said to, I said to Philippe- Yeah ... uh, this was via Mark. Yeah.
And if this didn't work out- Yeah ... it would be the first unsuccessful thing that I'm [00:12:00] aware that Mark has done.
Chad: Right. And it might happen. Don't cross it off the list yet. We're
Shubh: halfway there. Uh, how do you know Mark?
Chad: Yeah. Have you ever played any sport like pickleball? Have you ever pickleballed with Mark?
Shubh: No.
Chad: Or his brother?
Shubh: No. Is there-
Chad: It's- ... a
Shubh: level of intensity?
Chad: It's unbelievable. Yeah. Like, it's un- It's crazy. Everything that they do, there is a level of intensity. Yeah.
There's execution. There is- Do
Shubh: you think y- that you have to go to private school to get that?
Chad: Well, I think they're just scared of their dad, obviously. I thought-
Shubh: There's something to that there. Or his brother. You wanna be scared of your dad, save a ton of money in private school- Yeah, yeah ... and just have a immigrant father.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: But you're saying it's entirely different.
Chad: Yeah. Like, he had pickleball lessons as a kid. He must have had some sort of- ... racket sport lessons. Like- They, they-
Shubh: I don't, I don't know- The family can-
if they have pickleball lessons-
Philippe: I think they did ... at the point of the kid. I
Chad: think I actually- Yeah ... went to Twe- Tweedsmuir. They had that shit like 10 years- 19, 1992.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah.
Chad: They were just ahead of the game. Before anyone else. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. That's how good
Chad: that private school was. Like, you've got a mouth trumpet?
That guy- Yeah ... can just spitball a P&L. Yeah. Like, he's just on another level. He's- He's crazy ...
Shubh: very smart. It's stupid. But, uh, how do you know him?
Chad: How do I know him? You play pickleball? Well, he's on this mission- he's doing part-time jobs-
at every [00:13:00] startup across Western Canada. Yeah, yeah. And you get a little clip of equity. Yeah. About, get some options and move on. Hey,
Shubh: listen, if you can do it...
Chad: Yeah, yeah.
Shubh: I'm like...
Chad: It's the same thing as starting a VC fund- Yeah ... without having any money.
Shubh: Yeah, you're just putting in your time
Chad: and energy. Yeah, yeah.
It's like an equity VC fund. And you
Shubh: actually know-
Chad: Which is brilliant ...
Shubh: how to operate.
Chad: Yeah. I didn't fall for it.
Shubh: Oh, you didn't? No. You should have.
Philippe: Good for you.
Chad: I'm thinking about it.
Shubh: You probably should still, yeah.
Chad: But I'm not there yet. No, I
Shubh: think- That's my, that's my personal business model, so Mark and I are aligned there.
Right. Yeah.
Chad: Well, I'll slide you some options after this.
Philippe: He's actually got equity in this podcast.
Chad: Shit. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. What's zero of zero?
Philippe: Not gonna see a dime, right?
Shubh: Yeah. Well, I mean- Yeah. W- I mean, no, no, none of us are gonna... It's not like we're excluding Mark specifically. Right. Nobody's gonna see a dime.
Philippe: No one's gonna see a dime.
Yeah. Yeah.
Shubh: Be pretty good though.
Philippe: Are you- Yeah ... pocketing that New Nation money?
Chad: The, the, b- by that
Shubh: you mean the New Network?
Philippe: New Network, yes.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah. It's, uh, I'm sliding it right in. That, The Center Nine. Hey, you know what? New Network, Center Nine, thanks again for your support.
Philippe: Yeah. Very- So N- New Nation, sorry, I'm mixed up.
That was from my [00:14:00] separatist podcast I just come from.
Chad: The New Nine. The New Nine. Yeah.
Shubh: So- Alberta: The Sequel, that's my separatist podcast. Pretty good?
Chad: That's great.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah.
Hi, everybody. It's Shubh here. Are you a startup founder or a scale-up exec that's trying to take your company to the next level? Are you looking for the right people to help you do it? Are you looking for people who will help you set culture, who have deep domain expertise, who can figure anything out, who are Swiss Army Knives and unicorns?
How are you finding those people? Are you juggling multiple job boards? Are you screening hundreds of resumes, doing dozens of interviews? Is it working? I bet it's not. Are you frustrated? I bet you are. Do you know how I know that? Because once upon a time, I was you. Then I discovered the New Network.
Jennifer Wiens and her team at the New Network help Canadian tech companies build and scale high-performance teams through a proven unique approach to recruitment and [00:15:00] executive search. Also, they're awesome. I used them to help build most of my team at ZayZoon, and I would use them again, and I've recommended them to everyone that I know.
Check out newnetwork.ca for more details. The New Network: I couldn't have done it without them.
Ladies and gentlemen, we got a new sponsor Center Nine the number nine.com. So Center the number nine.com but not written center the number nine. Center- Center l- Nine. Nine. Yeah. But not N-I-N-E. That's a better way to describe it. Centernine.com, not N-I-N-E. That's not a better way. That's not a better way. No, that's a much more confusing way to describe it.
Do, uh, think they're immediately regretting sponsoring this podcast? Yeah, that's right. My friends Riz Kazam and Clint Phillips, they run a Microsoft consulting shop. They are two former technical consultants who got tired of watching enterprises and companies overpay for [00:16:00] bad Microsoft 365 work and built their own consultancy.
I've worked with a number of clients over the last six months. It's remarkable the number of early-stage companies that use Microsoft and use Teams, and it takes them days, weeks to get stuff set up for us. So you know what? Uh, call Clint, call Riz, call Center Nine. They can do, uh, Microsoft 365 security, Identity, Copilot adoption, uh, AI compliance, M&A migrations.
They're a small team, deep expertise, no fluff. Wow. Did you like how I said, "No fluff"? Yeah. That's great. So, uh, if your organization is navigating any of these things, reach out to them on LinkedIn. Uh, go to their website. Uh, you know what? You can, you can DM me. I'll put you in touch with them. Center Nine- Yeah
.com. I've known Riz for a long time. I see him at the gym all the time. He's in good shape, too. Is he? Yeah, he's in good shape. Takes care of himself. So you know if somebody takes care of himself that way- Uh-huh ... he's gonna take care of your Microsoft 365 needs. Boom. [00:17:00] Boom. Reach out to them on LinkedIn. Uh, reach out to me.
I'll connect you with them. Go to their website, Center Nine, not N-I-N-E .com Center, the number nine. So it's centernine, not N-I-N-E .com. Centernine.com. And, uh, we're gonna put that in the show notes. They're good guys. They're gonna do a good job
Shubh: , Well, Chad, uh, thank you for telling us a bit about yourself. Uh, again, very impressive that you've accomplished what you have to date. , All of those accomplishments will pale in comparison to what you're, uh, going to accomplish-
Chad: I'm so looking forward to this
Shubh: sitting on this podcast. So Chad, do you have an idea or multiple ideas- Yeah ... to pitch Philippe and I?
Chad: I got one.
Philippe: Wow.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Okay.
Chad: Go. And I've, I've sprinkled this around, like it-
Shubh: Oh, so you've, you've, you've, you've sanity checked this one ... '
Chad: cause I want it so bad, I've told everybody about it.
Shubh: Okay.
Chad: You ready for it?
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: Have you ever stepped in dog shit? [00:18:00]
Shubh: Uh-huh. I have. Uh, me- uh, metaphorically or literally?
Chad: Literally.
Shubh: Both.
Chad: Yeah. Tell me a- Check ... tell me about that time.
Shubh: Well, I can tell you about a time, I just had a near miss two nights ago. My 14-year-old was- Yeah ... walking with her new Nikes down this path. Yeah. We were going for a family walk.
Yeah. And I grabbed her hoodie and literally threw her- No ... into the grass- Yeah ... to avoid stepping in dog poop.
Chad: Yeah, it's terrible.
Shubh: So I'm pretty scared of it. Yeah. Philippe, you've stepped in some dog shit. I
Philippe: have stepped in dog shit, but it, it's-
Shubh: And I ain't talking about, uh- ... accidentally booking two dates on the same night.
I don't know. I don't know.
Philippe: Um, I, I, but I, I just remember it being, like, in the crevices-
Shubh: Yeah ... of my shoe. And it smells forever. Sure. It smells forever.
Philippe: It smells forever. Like, you gotta
Shubh: get a new- And then you take your shoes out and you're trying to clean the bottom of the shoe out, and it never, it will never, it will never not smell like dog poop.
Philippe: Yeah, it's disgusting. It ruins everything. It's terrible.
Shubh: And even if there actually is not the smell or the feeling of dog poop on your shoe-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: you will, from that point forward, think [00:19:00] you feel dog poop on the bottom of your shoe, and you will smell dog poop.
Chad: 100%.
Shubh: So to answer your question, we've all stepped in dog poop.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: It's the worst.
Philippe: Yep.
Chad: You ready for the, my idea?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: It has nothing to do with dog poop. I'm just kidding. I call it the shit box.
Philippe: Oh.
Chad: You ready for this?
Shubh: That's a great name.
Chad: So here's-
Shubh: 10 out of 10 name ...
Chad: here's what it is. It's a box.
Shubh: Okay. Uh-huh.
Chad: It's got a camera Might have to be a thermal camera, might not be
Shubh: Okay.
Chad: When a dog shits inside a box that you mark on your grass, gives him a treat, and it rewards the dog for only shitting in one little tiny spot in your backyard.
Shubh: This is brilliant.
Chad: So now you don't have a backyard covered in dog shit. Works for little kids too. Okay. Little kids will start using the, the box to get the treat.
Shubh: Yeah. Also works during Stampede.
Chad: Right? Positive reinforcement, all these kind of things, human behavior, psychology- Yeah ... trains the dog to poop in a tiny corner [00:20:00] in your backyard- So you- ... and now you don't have dog shit everywhere.
Shubh: So your, so your solution, I love this, 'cause it- Yeah ... you're, it's not a preventative...
Uh, you're, you're actually- Right ... it's preventative.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: It's a prophylactic dog shit detector. Yeah, yeah. I thought you were gonna say there's something that, like, pops out of your shoe.
Chad: That's a dumb idea.
Shubh: Like an airbag. That is-
Chad: No, we're doing good ideas here.
Shubh: Yeah. But you are now constraining the dog to poop in a certain area.
Chad: Not constraining. You are training.
Shubh: Incentivizing.
Chad: You are using positive reinforcement.
Shubh: Sorry, you're right. You're right. You are, you are-
Chad: Incentivizing ...
Shubh: you are- Yeah ... you are incentivizing this dog to poop in a certain area. Do you have a dog?
Chad: I do.
Philippe: What kind of dog? Is it, like, a big dog that, with big poops?
Shubh: Yeah, big
Chad: poops. Man, I'm from Alberta. You just said red ruffneck. Yeah. The only thing
Shubh: bigger than his dog is his truck.
Chad: It's a miniature pinscher. Oh. It's a little tiny dog. A miniature
Shubh: Pinscher Creek-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: if it's from Alberta.
Chad: Exactly.
Shubh: Uh,
Philippe: I thought you were gonna say you had, like, a Doberman or a Great Dane.
Chad: Oh, his name's Ralph Klein.
Shubh: Oh, that's so good. Is the dog's name actually Ralph Klein?
Chad: No, it's not. Oh, that would be amazing. But it will be tonight. [00:21:00]
Shubh: Yeah. What is the dog's name? Jax. All right. Jax is good. Well, Jax or Jackson or Ja- that's a very Western Canadian name.
Chad: Just straight Jax. Yeah. J-A-X.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah.
Philippe: That's sick. 'Cause on-
Chad: I got a, I got a golden- ... like the dog collar, you can't have a name that's that long or you can't fucking read it. Yeah. So you, you have to limit the dog's name to four characters or less, and it'd be awkward with my name being Chad and the dog also being called Chad, so- So- ... that doesn't work.
Shubh: I love... But that was a close second. I do really- Yeah ... like this idea, but can I digress for a second 'cause I need some advice from you guys? Yeah, yeah. Sure. Um, we have finally acquiesced to our children's ongoing demands for the last decade. Yeah. We're gonna get a dog.
Chad: Yep.
Shubh: Um, I'm the least interested in getting the dog in the house.
Like- Yeah ... I'm, I'm not opposed to it, but I'm like, "Eh, you know, dog, great. This is your guys' thing. I'm sure I'll get along with the dog great." But I did, as a condition of us getting this dog, retain naming rights. Like, uh- Oh.
Chad: Oh.
Shubh: So I was like, "Hey, we can get a dog. The two conditions are it's, it's a boy," 'cause my...
I got three daughters, and the g- girls were like, "Of course it's gonna be a boy." I was like, "Done." Yeah. And then I was like, "And I get to [00:22:00] name it." Yeah. And they, they were so excited that we were ready to say yes. They were like, "Yeah." Now they're, of course, immediately regretting- Yeah ... that decision.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Um, do you guys got some dog name ideas?
Chad: Ryan.
Shubh: Ryan the dog?
Chad: Ryan. Yeah, Ryan. Just so in conversation when you're referring to- Yeah ... like, "Yo, Ryan shit on the carpet last night"
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: People will assume that it's a human. So
Shubh: like you're using a real person's name.
Chad: Yeah, yeah, 100%. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you can say the weirdest shit ever.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Yeah. Like, "Fuck, Ryan went through my underwear drawer and ate all of my underwear."
Shubh: Yeah. "Ryan lost his testicles last night."
Chad: So-
Philippe: 100% ... and that's the, that's the move- Yeah ... right? 'Cause I think people often, they go, like, to Charlie.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Which my dog's name is Charlie. Yeah, yeah. But, but they, they'll go to names like that or, or, or- Well, but I think- ... Penelope ... what's great about Ryan- But Ryan
Shubh: is hilarious
Ryan doesn't sound like a dog's name. Charlie s- still- Yeah ... sounds a bit like a dog's name.
Philippe: Yeah. It
Chad: has a potential.
Philippe: Or I like, like Douglas.
Shubh: Douglas. So one of my ideas was Doug, like I'm a Ev- Doug Weight. I was like, "I wanna- Yeah ... name the dog Doug Weight."
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: And they were like, [00:23:00] "Why?" I was like, "Because Doug Weight the dog is great."
Like, uh, but I love the idea of this, the... You've hit on where my head was at, giving the dog a name that will lead me to do bits for the duration of the dog's-
Philippe: Totally ...
Shubh: uh, lifespan with us. Yeah. So I immediately told the kids, "I'm gonna name the dog Indiana," and then I'm just gonna walk around like Sean Connery all the time and say, "We named the dog Indiana."
And just do that every week- ... for the next 12 years.
Philippe: That's a reference I'm missing.
Shubh: Oh, Indiana Jones and Last Crusade.
Philippe: Oh.
Shubh: So, uh, Indiana Jones' character is actually, uh, Henry Jones Jr. He's not Indiana Jones. The dog's name was Indiana. So Indiana Jones actually named after his dog, and then Sean Connery, you know, he keeps calling him Junior.
"Stop calling me that." And he says, "We're naming the dog Indiana, so I'm just gonna do that bit."
Chad: Oh, wow.
Shubh: So I name the dog Indiana just so I can do the bit. I don't like-
Chad: I don't think many people will, will pick up on that, and they'll just think you're fucking weird. I
Shubh: think that's great. And I'm cool [00:24:00] with that too.
Yeah. That, but that makes a bit. Doesn't that what makes... If I'm doing the bit just for the people who will know.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Right?
Chad: There'll be three.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: But that's pretty good. That's enough for me.
Chad: Okay.
Shubh: I just need one person to laugh one time. It's like you're
Chad: getting a dog, a boy dog named Indiana.
Shubh: Well, now you've got me also thinking about the long-term bit of having the dog with just a regular name- Yeah
that is not... We, generally, nobody names their dog Ryan.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Right? Uh, or Steve.
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: Totally.
Philippe: Or like Matthew.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Richard. Yeah. I, I love this.
Chad: It's gotta be something with, like, one or two syllables. Yeah, Craig. It's gotta be punchy. Exactly. Yeah. Craig, Ryan, Steve.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Like, it's gotta be punchy, and-
Shubh: Or,
Chad: or I c-
you can't explain it either. You just have to say the weird shit that Ryan does- Yeah ... and just not give anybody context.
Shubh: You know what? I think it'd also be funny 'cause in Western Canada a lot of, like, kids now, especially in their 20s, are named, like, Jayden. Like, that's a, you know? Like, what if- Yeah ... we just leaned in and gave him a proper Western Canadian name?
Chad: Yeah. I'm seeing a lot of, like, Jaggers- Yeah ... and Bentleys and- Yeah ... like, oof [00:25:00] Bentley sounds like
Shubh: a dog's name though.
Philippe: I like the idea though of- Yeah ... of, of picking someone who is in your social circle- Yeah ... but maybe not that close. Yeah. To just, like, kind of- Oh, that's great ... mess with their mind a little bit.
That'd be sick. This is
Chad: my dog Mark.
Philippe: So I would, I
Shubh: Mark. That's my, that's my dog. That's Mark Le Dog.
Right? That's amazing. That's pretty good. I like that. That
Philippe: would be so, he would be so tripped out if he, like, found out. Uh, Dar- Darcy
Shubh: Tuer.
Philippe: I was actually thinking Darcy. Yeah. Like-
Shubh: I actually told, so, uh, now the cat's out of the bag 'cause we were gonna do it as a bit, but I told Garth, you know, my, our, my friend- Yeah
Garth, who's general counsel at ZayZoon, I was like, "Um, our friend Tate Hackert, founder of ZayZoon, just had a baby." And I was like, "We're g- I'm gonna name my dog Frank Hackert," which is his, his kid's name. Because I just think, I mean, what... That's, like- Yeah ... a hilarious bit.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Like, so I like the idea of, of, of a real name- of someone in your universe as a dog's name.
Philippe: Yeah, and
Shubh: then you can just be like- Ryan is a fabulous idea. It's actually, like, it's very close.
Chad: And you have [00:26:00] to deadpan it too. You can't- Yeah ... like, lead on, just-
Philippe: Well, then it becomes so much funnier too when you're like, "Oh, Mark shit the bed last night." Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Shubh: Like Mark Le Dain.
Philippe: I, I like Mark Le Dain.
Shubh: Yeah, Mark
Philippe: Le Dog is pretty good.
Shubh: Yeah. Mark Le Dog.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: This, this, uh, I knew I came to the right place for this advice.
Philippe: Can, can we get back to the shit box?
Shubh: Yeah, yeah, sorry. I need, I know I d- I digress, but it was
Philippe: important. How many shit boxes do you have in your backyard? And are these, do these become a, a public utility? Like, in the dog park- Ooh ... are there, like, a few hundred shit boxes?
Chad: You're talking about scaling.
Philippe: I'm talking about scaling.
Like,
Chad: I was thinking about just making sure my kids don't-
Chad
Chad: still, Chad
Philippe: still fucking startup mode here.
Chad: Yeah, man. Like, just so my kids don't step in shit.
Philippe: In the backyard specifically.
Chad: Anywhere,
Philippe: don't
Chad: care,
Philippe: like- If Chad was scaling, he'd be doing- Yeah ... better podcasts than this one.
Chad: Yeah, 100%.
Philippe: But I'm thinking, I'm thinking, like, to, to truly end the global epi- Uh
epidemic of- Poopademic, poopademic ... epidemic. Stepping in shit. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You gotta get these things everywhere, right?
Shubh: Yeah. I'm kinda with Philippe here because we almost stepped in poop on a [00:27:00] public path.
Chad: Here's what we do. You ready for it?
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: We put one out And then if the dog shits in the box, we give the dog a treat, but we take a picture of the owner, we put it on Instagram- Yes
and we name shame them unless they pick up the poop.
Philippe: Oh,
Shubh: I like this even better. That's the, yeah,
Chad: yeah, yeah, yeah.
Shubh: Uh-
Chad: Shubh and Ryan, fucking dog shit on the ground. Yeah Didn't pick it up. Look at this guy. Do you recognize him?
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Or may-
Chad: Tag him ...
Philippe: or maybe that's what the shit box is. The shit box is actually a, a, um, a, a, a s- a cube in a public square wherein we take owners who don't ta- Uh-
pick up their dog shit- ... I love where this is going ... and we put them in the shit box. And you- And then everyone can walk by and be like, "That guy, he's in there for, like, an hour." Oh,
Shubh: I thought you were gonna say, then we put all the poop in the top.
Philippe: No, I think it's just, like, maybe it's even live stream, but you can walk by and be like- I
Shubh: like this idea of putting poop in the top.
Philippe: Yeah, we can put poop in the top.
Shubh: I mean, you're never gonna do it again.
Philippe: Right.
Shubh: Uh, I think this, uh, idea legitimately, first of all, has a practical commercial application. I know we're just fucking around here, but I think if I could get this dog to only poop [00:28:00] in a specific portion of my yard-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: when this dog arrives-
Chad: Right
Shubh: I'd be like, "Great job, Ryan."
Chad: Totally.
Shubh: Uh, but Ryan gets a little something out of it, too, right?
Chad: A little treat. Treat, treat.
Philippe: That's so trippy that you're talking about a dog. And that, uh- Ryan is perfect.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I also love the idea that you're on, like, a work call, right? Yeah. And then you could, like, also use Ryan as...
People would think you had an assistant named Ryan.
Chad: 100%.
Shubh: Be like, "Oh, Ryan just brought me my slippers."
Chad: Yeah. "Ryan, stop licking my feet."
Shubh: Yeah. "
Chad: I'm on a call. This
Shubh: is important." "Ryan, I don't have time to cuddle right now."
Chad: This is great. "
Shubh: What do you mean, Ryan, you have to take a shit?" Um, it's so
Chad: good. "Go use the shit box in the backyard."
Shubh: Yeah. "Go." Uh, so the shit box, uh, so protects your yard- Yeah ... prevents you from wa- walking in shit regularly. Uh-huh. I think there is a commercial grade version that's out in public, so people are walking down the path, the dog, the dog's like, "I'm gonna go poop in there 'cause I'm gonna get-" Yeah, totally
something out of this. You get a
Chad: treat. Right?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: And I do also like [00:29:00] the public shaming idea.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: That might be a separate idea.
Chad: That's a commercial scale.
Philippe: Um, I got a question. Do you think we could train geese to use this?
Shubh: Hmm.
Chad: You know, in all the research that I've done- ... the answer is yes, we can absolutely pursue it.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Next question. Uh, geese are... Uh, we've talked a bit about geese before on this podcast. We're not fans. I'm certainly not a fan.
Chad: What do you guys have against geese?
Philippe: What do you think of this idea-
Shubh: They're fucking kind of assholes.
Philippe: W- every year we have one day- ... where we can, we can purge geese. It's called - Noose the Goose, and all residents can take up arms, except for, uh, uh, firearms, can take up arms against geese and kill as many as you want in the city. I
Chad: tell all my kids, like, if we're out hiking- ... we're in the wild- Yeah ... any animal, if they can catch it, they can keep it.
Shubh: Right. Yeah.
Chad: If, like, we see a goose, it's like- Yeah ... Bradley, my four-year-old, if you catch it, you can keep it.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: [00:30:00] Moose- Was that how you got that, uh- ...
Shubh: we
Chad: see a moose at the backyard ... pincher? Yeah, 100%. I caught it. Just the
Shubh: neighbor's dog and you ran
Chad: it out grass? Yeah, it was at a dog park.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: It was at a dog park.
It was fine. It was a free-range dog. Yeah, yeah. You
Shubh: lured it into a box.
Chad: We didn't take it off someone else's leash. It just came to us, so. But honestly, if you have kids, and you tell them- Yeah ... they can catch it, it, life just becomes way more fun.
Shubh: That's a... I mean, I really like that.
Chad: And we've had some snakes.
We've had some lizards. We've had- They've caught them? 100%, yeah. They absolutely have.
Shubh: Good for your kids. And then
Chad: you actually let them keep it? Yeah, 100%, yeah. They don't last long. How
Shubh: are they catching them? Just grabbing them?
Chad: Hands. Like, it's wild. They're just- They're
Shubh: grabbing frogs with their bare hands?
Chad: 100%. 100%.
Shubh: Your kids have incredible hand-eye coordination.
Chad: Yeah, they're Red Neck- They- ... Alberta kids. This is what we do,
Shubh: man. Yeah, but they could probably take Mark Le Dain in a pickleball game. Yeah.
Chad: Oh, ho, ho. I've never-
Shubh: They got good hands ... thought
Chad: about this, actually.
Shubh: That'd be good pickleball training, like, try to grab a frog, like.
Chad: Okay.
Shubh: No?
Chad: It's weird, but I'm
Shubh: into it. Shifty?
Philippe: Frogs are kind of easy
Shubh: to catch. It's like a rocky when he runs around after the chicken, right? He's gotta catch the chicken. This is just a frog.
Philippe: I caught a couple of frogs last week, to [00:31:00] be honest with you.
Shubh: In a net?
Philippe: No, in my hands.
Shubh: They just jumped... You just put your hand out and they jumped in- Yeah, exactly
'cause they're like Cinderella. Is this when
Chad: you should have been working?
Philippe: Yeah, this is when I should have been working. I was, like, out in the bush catching frogs. Okay.
Chad: Cool.
Shubh: Yeah. That's
Chad: great.
Philippe: Yeah. It was lovely there.
Shubh: Uh, yeah. O- other animals, I think, like, in a public place, if you could get geese to not poop...
This is gonna sound very privileged. If you get ke- geese to not poop on the green at a golf course with a version of the shit box- Oh ... I think I'd be down.
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah. To me, it's al- they're always on the running path, and there's shit everywhere. It's annoying.
Shubh: Yeah, they really love to poop.
Philippe: What about for birds?
'Cause, 'cause when you were talking about, like, have you ever gotten, like- Like,
Shubh: birds in the air?
Philippe: Yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm talk- I'm thinking, like, h- like, when you get shit on by a bird.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Like, could you-
Shubh: You ever been pooped on by a bird, Chad?
Chad: I would have to think hard. I don't think
Shubh: so. Philippe, you ever been hit by b- bird poop?
Philippe: Yeah. How many times? But they say it's good luck. I think one time, but I, uh, was holding ice cream and it pooped in
Shubh: my ice cream. Ah, you got poop in your ice cream? [00:32:00]
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: From the bird. Yeah.
Philippe: Did you
Shubh: eat it?
Philippe: I think, I, I think not. I hope not. Yeah. I was young, but, uh, I really hope I did not.
Shubh: Huh.
Philippe: So I'm, that's why I'm curious, like- I don't think I've ever heard that
'cause, 'cause I would say- It's
Chad: called an umbrella. Just get a fucking umbrella, carry an umbrella- Okay, so we're not selling the bird ... and birds will shit on you. No, no, no, no, no.
Shubh: It's- I think it'd be hard to stop the birds from pooping on
Chad: you. This is something that you can use, uh, behavioral positive reinforcement.
You know, dogs are relatively intelligence.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: You know, there's, there's a spectrum of intelligence of animals. When you can look into their eyes and you can kind of feel something's there, like a cow. You ever looked in a cow's eyes? There's something there.
Philippe: There's something there.
Chad: There's something there.
Dogs, cats, kind of like that. You look at a bird's eyes, there's nothing there.
Shubh: It's,
Chad: yeah, it's nothing.
Shubh: No, no, no. I fucking hate birds. Um, I don't know that I've looked into a cow's eyes and thought there's something there, though.
Chad: Because you're not from Alberta.
Shubh: Okay. No,
Philippe: holy
Chad: shit.
Shubh: I'm fucking...
Philippe: I grew up in Edmonton. I've lived in Calgary.
Chad: There's lots of cows in Edmonton. You're right. I mean, I've seen- I take that back. I apologize, yeah ... a lot of cows. [00:33:00] I've
Shubh: just never once said- Yeah ... "Fuck, that cow's got a lot of going on." You know? A cow, I've never looked into a cow's eyes and been like, "That - cow is staring into my soul," or- They're
Chad: thinking
Shubh: "That
Chad: cow knows something I don't." You can tell they're thinking, or, like, if you get in a cage and you gotta move cows- I, I- ... or you're gonna branding or
Shubh: anything like that ... I, I think I respectfully disagree. I think when I look into a cow- Is it,
Philippe: but you also, you do, you don't wear cowboy boots during the stampede?
Shubh: Yeah, but why would I?
Philippe: Well, but you know, that's why, you know, I wear cowboy boots- So do- ... and I connect with cows ... so
Chad: do stepping cow shit, man. Follow along here.
Shubh: Um, yeah, I don't know that cows have a lot going
Chad: on. I bet you could train a cow to use a shit box, for sure.
Philippe: Oh, I, how would this one... I mean, what about horses?
The, I mean- Yeah ... horse shit on the, on the- Yeah, totally ... streets when they're walking
Chad: around ... horses are there, 100%. You could train a horse to use a shit box.
Philippe: What about the mechanics, though? So, so I'm curious. Uh, uh, uh, dogs poo in a really weird way. You know, they got their, their like ru- Do you- ... their back legs and their front legs close together.
Yeah. Say they're, they, we, they- Yeah ... like, I'm kind of questioning- Yeah ... whether or not they'll, [00:34:00] like, perfectly line it up- Yeah ... but say they do. Um, how is the shit box dispensing the treat? Well, I- Is it, like, a weird arm that comes up- I also have a- ... in their legs? ...
Shubh: a follow-up question, and it's inspired by, um, you know, in tennis how they have the, the automated m- like, are you on the line or off the line?
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh, or, like, in the World Cup, is the ball all the way across the line? What if the poop's on the line?
Chad: You know, I've already thought this out. Let me explain it to you.
Shubh: Okay, let's hear it. Okay. Yeah. So and also please, and when you're done that, answer Philippe's question about the dispensing, dispensing.
Chad: Yeah. So the first thing you do when you get the shit box, you get a little s- you get an app, and you, you open up your app and you mark... You get a picture of the camera and then you mark out what your square is.
Shubh: Yep.
Chad: And you take these little metal flags and you put them on the edges of the square so the dog visually can see the square.
Make sense?
Shubh: Got it.
Chad: Then we use a thermal camera because the shit never comes out cold. I don't know how many times you've done it, but it- ... has yet to come out cold. I
Shubh: mean, I am from Alberta,
Chad: so. And we actually look for the heat signature, right?
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: We look for the heat signature.
Shubh: Yep.
Chad: [00:35:00] And that indicates to us that something was left by the dog that is hotter than the surroundings- Right
which by theory of deduction is likely a shit or an organ.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: But in that case, probably not good for the dog.
Shubh: What do you do in those-
Chad: And then- ... three
Shubh: weeks of summer when it's, like, 35 degrees outside?
Chad: It still comes out at a different temperature differential. The only issue that we run into is when the ambient air matches exactly- Yeah, yeah, yeah
the dog's air. Yeah. And the likelihood of that is, like, two days a year, and the dog will forget it in two days, so we're totally fine. Right. Gotcha. Moving on. Stick with me. And then the dispensing mechanism, you know, there's options. There's the cheap option where it just drops it out the bottom.
Shubh: Yep.
Chad: There's a little trapdoor, drops them out the bottom. Yep. Candy machine. Were, were your, was your family wealthy enough- Yeah ... to have, use a candy machine, something like that?
Philippe: Okay. Growing up? Yeah. Yeah.
Shubh: Did your family have a quarter growing up?
Chad: Right? Yeah. . Yeah. So there's that option. It just drops out. The other one's, like, just a launcher, like the tennis ball launcher. Oh.
Shubh: Oh.
Chad: And those are for- That's exciting ... like, the golden retrievers, and [00:36:00] they get excited, right?
They shit in the box, and they get ready. They're like, "Okay." Oh. Yeah. "Send the Milk-Bone."
Shubh: Here it comes. Phew. Do you think there's a risk that the dog's having so much fun with that second solution that they're, they're maybe pooping too much?
Chad: I encourage it.
Shubh: Encourage it.
Chad: Like, yeah. So I- As long as it's in the box.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: You can do it as many times as you want. You can break them up.
Shubh: Gotcha.
Chad: You can do one, you can do two, you can do many.
Shubh: I like this idea.
Philippe: So I mis... I t-
Chad: But let me ask you a question. Yeah. You ever try to stop one halfway through? It's hard. It's hard.
Shubh: Stop a dog from pooping halfway through or, or yourself?
Chad: Yourself.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: It's- Yeah ... it's-
Philippe: It's really hard.
Chad: Yeah. So if a dog can train themself to do that, if Ryan can do that- They, they can do this ... in my world, we call that a feature, not a bug. Yeah. Ryan is incredible.
Shubh: You would, you would actually-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: uh, you, he, there would be a commercial opportunity with Ryan.
Totally. People would watch- Yeah ... a, a YouTube video of a dog-
Chad: Yeah ... and it starts- Or you'd be out somewhere and the dog's pooping, and you'd be like, "Watch this." Ryan. Yeah. He'd be like, "Stop."
Shubh: Yeah. What- Or I'd be on a call and just be like, "I just told Ryan to stop his poop midway through." Yeah, totally. People would be like, "What the [00:37:00] fuck?"
Kind of- Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I like this idea.
Philippe: Um, so I misunderstood. I thought this was like a, these were, like, kind of the size of, like, Kleenex boxes that would be, you would have a couple around your, your backyard. Oh, you just want- Your idea's so much better. Yeah. Yeah. Because th- that makes way more sense.
Like, yeah, you could train a dog to shit in a little cube in your backyard. Yeah. That's easy. And in a dog park, you could have just the shit section.
Chad: Totally. Yeah.
Philippe: And you don't have to... Would you have to pick it up still if it was in the shit section?
Chad: Yeah, that's why you always have to pick it up. Yeah.
You, if you own a dog- Right ... you always have to pick it up, period. Right. Don't care. Always. But you
Shubh: know where it is now.
Chad: But no, you get named and shamed if you don't
Shubh: No, I'm saying like the, the, even in your own backyard. Now I know I don't have- Yeah ... to be careful about stepping in poop anymore- Yeah,
Chad: totally
Shubh: except the shit
Chad: box 'Cause that's the hardest part about having kids and a dog is you never know when a landmine's gonna happen and somebody's gonna slide through it. Yeah. If you think it's bad getting it on our shoes, you should see getting it on other things, like-
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Okay ... it's chaos. Oh, yeah.
Shubh: . Yeah, yeah.
Um- I love this idea.
Ca- should, uh, I [00:38:00] mean, I got a couple other things to talk about. Should we give it a rating?
Philippe: Uh, yeah.
Shubh: We rate, uh, I almost said Ryan. Uh, we rate Chad, uh, on a scale of 75 salsas.
Chad: I've seen these, yeah.
Shubh: Okay, great.
Chad: I'm ready.
Shubh: Um, Philippe, Chad Hayden's first time on the pod. Shitbox. The
Philippe: Shitbox. Is this your o- only idea?
That's not gonna affect my score.
Chad: Oh, I got lots of ideas. You go- I'm just a fucking never-ending fountain of ideas.
Philippe: Okay, I love it. Shitbox, uh, to me, uh, uh, is great. I, I, um, I think there's still a chasm, though, between, um- The, the solution and the problem that you stated. Like, I don't know if we're gonna be solving stepping in dog shit for the world, but it is a really good backyard management tool.
And, you know, your dog thinks so. I think, uh- I-
Shubh: Yeah, keep going, sorry.
Philippe: So I think to me, uh, this is a great idea. but it's not gonna revolutionize the world. Uh, and so I'm, I'm gonna give it a 55 salsa. That's a
Shubh: pretty good
Philippe: score. Let [00:39:00] me see the bottom of your shoes. That
Shubh: was pretty strong. Clean as can
Philippe: be, brother.
Let me- Uh, but yeah ...
Shubh: uh, let me just, uh, uh, maybe take a slight counter here. I think, um, you know how, um, they say, like, 90% of traffic accidents happen within, like, uh, whatever, five blocks of your house? I don't know if that's the exact data.
Chad: Right.
Shubh: I suspect 99% of dog poop stepping incidents happen in your own property.
Chad: Where the dog
Shubh: shits. So I actually think even though, yes, I agree with Philippe, we're not changing the global ecosystem, we are thinking locally. Right. And as a result, acting globally, 'cause I think we're gonna cut down significantly on poop-related stepping incidents. That's a good
Philippe: point. That's a good point.
Shubh: 'Cause they're all, they all happen in your yard, right? On the deck, in the yard, just randomly on the side of the house. I also think the branding is tremendous. Huge
Chad: opportunity.
Shubh: 10 out of 10, right? You can't sell Shitbox.
Chad: Yeah. Imagine your buddies come over drinking a beer, they're like, "What the fuck is that, and why is Ryan pooping in the corner?"[00:40:00]
Shubh: And they're just like- And then, uh- ... I got a Shitbox ... and who's that dog behind him? Heyo. Uh, I'm gonna go 62 salsas out of 75, because I, I love the name. Uh, uh, I'm potentially a target demographic here in the coming months as we acquire, uh, either a dog named either Indiana, Doug, or Ryan.
Philippe: Or, uh,
Shubh: or Mark- Mark Le Dog
Mark Le Dog. Or Mark Le Dog.
Philippe: Mark Le Dog. I'm gonna get a stuffed... If you don't name it that, I'll get a stuffed animal for the office called Mark Le Dog.
Shubh: Mark Le- "Hello, it's Mark Le Dog." And it, that dog will just always have crazy ideas. And you could do little voices and be like the dog. Anyway, uh, so I really think that's a great idea.
Excellent first pitch ever on this podcast. Um, that, uh, that's a legitimately pretty good score.
Chad: Thank you.
Philippe: Do you have a seg- you said you have other stuff you wanna talk about. You got a segment you wanna talk about?
Shubh: Uh, I kinda forgot.
Philippe: Okay. So
Shubh: you, do you have another idea?
Chad: No, I'm, I literally came-
Shubh: Yep ...
Chad: to hear the story about the STD clinic from-
Philippe: Oh, shit.
Oh, Lord.[00:41:00]
Chad: Like
Philippe: that's why I showed up Yeah, I just, I, it, it, it dawned on me that, um, I hadn't had a... You know, I'm a single guy, so, so I suppose I'm, I'm sexually active, but to be honest, not that sexually ac- active. Um, so it's, you know... Anyway, so I- It might be the
Chad: mustache ...
Shubh: I'm like, "Yep, so far I can air this. Yeah."
Philippe: And so- Keep going
and so it's, you know, it'd been a, uh, you know, a year, around a year, and I decided, okay, it's time to go.
Chad: Yeah '
Philippe: Cause I've had some partners in the last year. But this is just a story of like she asked me, um, this just happened yesterday. Um, she was like, "How many partners have you had in the last two months?"
And, um, I, I lied Because I wanted to sound cool. Did you, did you lie up? You overlie? I, I lied up. I said one. You lied
Shubh: up when talking- I said o- I said one ... you lied up when talking to the doctor? Yeah. This would be like somebody... This be like, this is like Chad going to the doctor and them being like, "Uh, how many drinks a week do you have?"
And he was like, "Two." Yeah. Right? [00:42:00] Like-
Chad: Trying to look cool.
Shubh: Yeah, you go, but you go down. Like, you, you lie to the doctor the other way.
Philippe: Yeah, but my number was zero. I
Chad: didn't It's weird to go for an STD test if you don't have sex with
Shubh: other people.
Chad: Yes, exactly. It's awkward. That's just a TD. This is just fun.
Shubh: That's
Chad: just- I'm just here for fun.
Shubh: That's just a regular- You may as well go to, like, the regular- Yeah ... like, uh-
Chad: I just like it when you put the Q-tip in my wiener
Shubh: hole. I
Chad: love that. Oh. That's why I'm here.
Shubh: I'm learning a lot. . Um-
Philippe: I mean, I obviously had had partners before- Yeah
the two months, but yeah, I had to, I v- I had to lie, you know? Yeah. I didn't want them to be like, "Well, what are you doing here?" Wait,
Shubh: what was the number? Yeah. What was... Like, how high... Did you, did you say the number, then you worried you went too high in the other direction?
Philippe: No, the number was one.
Shubh: Okay. '
Philippe: Cause it's just in the last two months- Yeah,
Shubh: reasonable
Philippe: I said
Shubh: one. I, I was sure if you, like, panicked and went, "11." Yeah.
Philippe: No. Once, once you, once I, once you start telling too high of a number, they're like, "Well, that's what I
Shubh: was-" Well, that's what I was worried about. Yeah.
Chad: Okay, since you seem to be an expert, and we seem pretty new to this, did you just say there's spectrums of STD [00:43:00] tests depending on how many people you say?
Like, one, do you get a light test? 11, do you get a heavy test?
Shubh: Well, this was what I was worried about is, like, if you, if you, if you're trying to be like, "I'm so cool"- I thought this was
Chad: binary ...
Shubh: and you said it's 34, are they like, "Hey, we, you need an MRI"? Like,
Chad: there's some tests that we don't give- Yeah, yeah
to normal people. Yeah, that's right. But because you said 34,
Shubh: right? This test hasn't actually been approved-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: by any governing body yet. Yeah.
Philippe: Right. Well, I'll tell you my experience and, and Shubh, you can decide if you wanna cut it or not. Um- That's
Shubh: always the easy one.
Philippe: But there was a ti- I've, so I've never had an STI or STD.
I'm not shaming anyone who has. Yeah,
Shubh: yeah. He's not bragging, folks.
.
Philippe: But there, there was a point maybe three or four years ago where I, I got a call from- AHS
Shubh: Yeah
Philippe: And, uh, the call was like, "Y- you've-" Yeah "... had sex with someone who's tested positive for-" Yeah "... chlamydia," I think it was. Yeah. And then I came in, and so that's, I got an SD- STI test then, and that was really like the red [00:44:00] carpet.
That was- Yeah ... "Oh, really? Okay, sit down right away."
Shubh: Yeah,
Philippe: yeah. Blood, pee, and then they, they, um, put a, a Q-tip in, in the tip of my pp. And, uh, it was, that I've never felt something as uncomfortable. It's- And then they're also like, "Here are the pills. Just take these ASAP." And it came back negative. I di- I didn't have anything, so.
Chad: Congratulations. Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah. Thank you. You're
Shubh: welcome. Yes, so I'm happy that you are being proactive about this.
Uh-
Philippe: All right, g- pitch us one more idea, Chad. Yeah, you got
Shubh: another one?
Chad: When we came in here today, we had a little bit of a problem. What was the problem?
Philippe: Uh, I was late.
Chad: Yeah, that's just a normal thing. What was the actual problem? No, you were, you were trying
Shubh: to set up a podcast studio.
Chad: Well, that was also quite interesting to watch, but the key card. You, you didn't
Shubh: know Philippe. Let's talk about the key card. Oh. Oh, key cards.
Chad: Yeah. We didn't have a key card.
Shubh: Yeah. Well, to be fair, we are-
Chad: Squatting
Shubh: 100% squatting very generously- In
Chad: Motiv. Shout out to Motiv ... in Motiv, in Motiv. Shout out Motiv.
Shubh: Motiv Studio.
Chad: Thank you, Motiv and New Nine- Yeah,
Shubh: yeah ...
Chad: for having us.
Shubh: Uh, the, you [00:45:00] just combined two of our sponsor's names into one name-
Chad: Yeah, I did it ...
Shubh: which is cool. Yeah.
Chad: That's cool.
Shubh: Okay, continue.
Chad: So the issue was we didn't have a key card.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: And there's certain times in life where you need sort of a passive way to open doors, where it's not, like, it doesn't have to be super strict, straight- Not if you're
Shubh: white, am I
Chad: right, guys? This is-
Shubh: Hi-ho. Ugh. Okay, anyway, continue.
Chad: Yeah. You know, we're not locking out a, a bank vault or something like that.
Yeah. We just need a way that on my office door, I need a way to get in here. Yeah. And, and typically, I visit a lot of offices, there's, like, a button. You ring the button, somebody comes- Yeah ... and they're like, "
Shubh: Yeah, yeah."
Chad: Yeah. This is my invention. Are you ready for it?
Shubh: Yep.
Chad: It's called Knock Knock, Who's There?
You just fucking knock on the door.
Shubh: Yep.
Chad: And there's like a na- like a kind of like a, a-
Shubh: Little camera ...
Chad: No, not even camera. Don't care about camera.
Shubh: What is it?
Chad: It's a box that's a deadbolt, like a door opener, not a camera.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: And you would program a password, like a secret password. Yeah. Like, "Hey, Shubh, you're coming to my office?[00:46:00]
The password's Diet Coke."
Philippe: Oh.
Chad: So you knock on the door, and the door knock would g- in, in a Samuel L. Jackson voice would go, "Who's there?"
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: I thought you were gonna pull out a- And you- ... perfect Samuel L. Jackson. Yeah, yeah,
Shubh: yeah.
Chad: You'd go-
Shubh: Hey, I don't know if you knew about this. Man, I'm thinking-
Philippe: I was looking around this room and like, "Ooh."
Did anyone
Chad: knock to Samuel L. Jackson? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Shubh, did you- I got that one. So it goes, "Who's there?"
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: And you would say, "Shubh." And it'd say, "What's the password?"
Shubh: Okay. I-
Chad: And then you'd have to go, "Diet Coke," and it'd be like, "Enter"-
Shubh: This is
Chad: like, uh- ... and the door would open ...
Shubh: the-
Chad: Like how much fucking fun would that be?
Shubh: The applications of this- That's Shubh ... are endless, uh, 'cause, you know, you need to guess Wi-Fi when you
Chad: come over. Totally. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Shubh: And you could just unlock all that stuff- Yeah ... with the secret- Yeah ... verbal passcode.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: That's actually amazing. This idea- Like a lock- ... is actually better than your first idea
Chad: the backyard, like come into my, come over for a beer.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Password is Ryan. Mark Le Dog.
Shubh: Ryan the Dog.
Chad: Yeah, Ryan the Dog. Yeah.
Shubh: My, my password- Okay ... would always be-
Chad: [00:47:00] Yeah ...
Shubh: in a Sean Connery voice.
Philippe: My, my password would be, for my backyard, would be my neighbor's dog- ... just so as soon as he starts barking. Yeah.
Tucker.
Shubh: And then every time a f- I, I, uh, be honest, any time a friend came over, you'd set the password to- 100% you would. Something fabulous ... like a thing. I'll be like, "Hey, Philippe, the password is, uh, Philippe's idol is Shubh."
Chad: Yeah. Or like
Shubh: I, I'd have, uh, an, "Oh, sorry, hey, you have to repeat it three times." Yeah.
"That's just the way we have it-
Philippe: Yeah ...
Shubh: set up."
Philippe: It's,
Chad: it's- It's actually, "I have chlamydia," and you catch it on- You catch it on the Nest Cam. You get this beautiful video on the Nest Cam- ... for Philippe coming over- Yeah ... and he just looks in the camera and goes, "I have chlamydia."
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: And then leaves.
Shubh: Yeah. This is a, a great-
a, a- Right? ... vocal password-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: for unlocking doors.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Office doors, home doors, whatever.
Chad: Yeah. Knock, knock. Who's there?
Shubh: You've got a [00:48:00] contractor coming to your house. The password could be, "I promise not to steal anything."
Chad: 100%. That'd be so hilarious.
Shubh: And then you also have- That would be good ... like, you know- Yeah
then you got legal rec- "Hey, man, you promised not to steal anything."
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: And the shit would be like, "Yo, how do I get into your house?" You knock. Like, literally just knock on the door. Um- That's how you get in my house, you idiot.
Shubh: Can I just ask a, a question here? You know how vampires can't come into your house unless you invite them?
Chad: Is this new? This isn't something that I... Uh, time out. I, I gotta write this down.
Shubh: Yeah, this is a thing. Yeah. There's movies- This is very important. Uh, the movies like Lost Boys, uh-
Chad: Twilight. You're a big Twilight
Shubh: guy ... uh, uh- The Sin
Chad: News,
Shubh: Sin News ... yeah, uh, uh, Buffy the Vampire, they've all taught me this one thing.
You vampires- Okay ... uh, uh, Sinners, yeah. Sinners- Yeah ... was an incredible f- my favorite film of 2025.
Chad: Okay.
Shubh: Uh, you can't come in if you're a vampire. If, just hypothetically, I didn't know you were a vampire-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: and I gave you this password access, do you think the vampire would be able to cross the threshold of my home?
Chad: There's only one way to find out. Give me a Claude subscription. Yeah. [00:49:00] 30 bucks on Amazon, I can get the hardware- I need a microphone ... and we can do this.
Shubh: A microphone-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: uh, a computer-
Chad: Yep ...
Shubh: and a vampire.
Chad: And a vampire, yeah.
Philippe: Well, if it, uh, but the, you telling them, "Hey, come over. Here's the password," that's an invite.
Shubh: I think you still gotta invite him in. Uh- Actually, I don't know the specific rules. I'm not a vampire expert.
Chad: We could put it in the terms of service.
Philippe: It feels like you're asking these questions because you are a vampire.
Would I be allowed, would I be allowed in your house? Yeah. I mean, I mean, would a vampire be allowed?
Shubh: About to come over now.
Chad: And do you have very much garlic?
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: And just a disclaimer on the whole thing, like, "Here's knock, knock, who's there? This is how it works." So you- Yeah, yeah ... have a commercial going, and then just a disclaimer at the end, "Might not work for vampires."
Shubh: Yeah. Or might, or might work for
Chad: vampires.
Or might. We,
Shubh: we- Do not use with vampires.
Chad: We don't- Don't rec- ... caution, caution. Yeah.
Shubh: We don't recommend its use with vampires or other creatures-
Chad: May or may not. Same thing with Shitbox, [00:50:00] may or may not work with geese. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: It might.
Shubh: Uh, prob- probably doesn't.
Chad: I, I might.
Shubh: It, I mean, I don't know. If you could
Chad: train- Geese like treats.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Geese shit a lot. Uh, geese might accidentally come into the box, shit, get a treat, and be like...
Shubh: Knock, knock, who's there is- an incredibly delightful idea because it's a great idea for solving a problem, but it's also an incredible gag gift too.
Chad: It's hilarious. It'd be a blast.
Shubh: You know how many of these things you would sell on, uh, Christmas, Father's Day?
You
Chad: could choose your voice too.
Shubh: Would you only buy... Any of my buddies, this is the only gift I would ever buy them.
Philippe: Yeah. It's actually incredible. Like, we're ho- we're hosting a, a-
Shubh: You're, you got a housewarming, a office warming party on Friday ...
Philippe: office warming party on Friday. Don't- If you wanna come to
Shubh: that.
Yeah. Don't worry, this
Chad: comes-
Shubh: Yeah ... this, this comes out after, so not a whole bunch of people you don't want to show
Philippe: up. Okay. Well, we got, like, a code that... So we gotta get-
Shubh: What do I gotta text you every time I come by? Philippe, what's the code?
Philippe: What's the code?
Shubh: It's on
Chad: Siris. 69420. It always
Philippe: is.
Shubh: Next question.
It's, uh, it's 0000. [00:51:00]
Philippe: But I gotta generate a new code that's only available for that day for those people, but all the people who are coming, I would love for them to stop by any time. Yeah. Knock, knock. And knock, knock, and we just give them, "Hey, you guys are coming," a- and the code is, uh, w- welcome to your new office.
You know? That's cute.
Shubh: Yeah. But it's- Terrible code ... too easy to get. Too easy to guess. Yeah. That's a real s- that's a real security issue.
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: But, you know, there are folks who you, "Hey, you wanna stop by?"
Shubh: You know, you know how when you get, like, a bank transfer and then the password's always, like, you know, if you, if you don't know a person that well, it's like, what city do we live in?
Oh,
Chad: man, I make them riddles.
Shubh: But if you know the person really well, it's like- Yeah ... where was the place we first met? Oh, yeah. Or what did, what how many, how many partners did Philippe have- ... the time he went to the STI?
Philippe: How many trips did he lie about?
Shubh: Yeah, yeah, but yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. How many partners did...
And then the follow-up would be, "But how many did he say?"
Chad: Yeah, yeah.
Shubh: Right?
Philippe: You know what actually what I thought was interesting, you know, when he-
Chad: I think people should make those, those questions way harder.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Like, when you're- [00:52:00] Right ... getting two grand getting sent to you- What if- ... and, and it's something you have to think about, and research, and put in a Claude, and be like-
Shubh: Yeah
Chad: "Man, what is-"
Shubh: What I love about this is though you could actually, like it could be pronunciation-based too.
Chad: Totally.
Shubh: Couldn't just be the actual, like, "What's the password to get into Galatea?" Well, it's actually Galatea. Yeah. Because if you don't know-
Chad: You don't belong ...
Shubh: you don't know.
Philippe: Yeah, I like that too. I, I think you're right about e-transfers.
I would like, just, just to s- spice up my life a little bit, I would like it to be a little bit more like, um, the Da Vinci Code.
Shubh: Like a scavenger hunt. You
Philippe: know? Totally, 100%. It's like, oh, you gotta solve this riddle. The Rosetta
Chad: Stone.
Philippe: Yeah, and it's like, oh, something, something. It's gotta be, it's gotta be in the Declaration of Independence.
Yeah, yeah. And then you gotta go read that. Yeah. You'll find the third letter-
Shubh: There's a, there's a map on the back of the Declaration of Independence. Yeah.
Chad: The answer is inside locker 47 at the train station.
Shubh: Wait, guys, this is actually another idea.
Philippe: And it's so fun.
Shubh: You know, uh, my people, we don't, uh, for wedding, people get married, okay. We like to [00:53:00] give money when we go to weddings, right? We do too.
Philippe: We do.
Chad: Yeah, yeah.
Philippe: At weddings.
Shubh: Nah, you've come around late to it.
Yeah, yeah. You guys were always boxing shit up. We
Chad: do toonie bars. Where
Shubh: are we- We do toonie bars ... where are we registered? You know, et cetera. Um, uh, so money. But I would love the idea that I could give you, like, a QR code.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: And it's also now a little game.
Chad: You gotta solve a
Shubh: riddle. We, I keep telling you about The Game with Michael Douglas- Yeah
and Sean Penn, and I keep telling you you gotta watch that film. Uh, I like this idea where to get the money-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: you have to, like, you gotta, you know- Hmm ... you gotta work, you gotta work at it
Philippe: Brilliant.
Chad: Okay.
Shubh: This is pretty good too.
Philippe: Especially, you know what? Especially for weddings because here's the deal with giving money at a wedding.
Do you know what, what the average money you gotta give at a wedding is now?
Chad: There's an average?
Shubh: I don't know.
Philippe: Well, yeah.
Shubh: What's, what's the expectation?
Philippe: What, what do you think the expectation is? I just went to two weddings back to back.
Chad: How do they put this data set together?
Philippe: Yeah. I asked, like, 10 people. I, I was like, "That can't be the number."
Shubh: Yeah. Okay.
Philippe: I asked two people. What do you think it
Chad: is? $250.
Philippe: Oh, shit. Okay, so- I was gonna
Shubh: say it used to be 150, so, but with inflation, [00:54:00] I mean-
Philippe: Well, it was... I, I heard
Chad: between- You just gotta cover your cost to put the wedding on- Yeah ... and a wedding costs about $250. You going there by yourself though?
Philippe: Well, yeah, I'm going there by myself, so I did between- I was told between 150 and 200.
Yeah, 150. So I, I chose the high end of that. Um, but-
Chad: Is this like your STD test where you said it was- Yeah, yeah. You actually showed up saying 50- He, he put
Shubh: a $40
Chad: Boston- ... you just told everybody you did 200 ... yeah.
Shubh: You know what was in that envelope was a $40 Boston Pizza
Chad: coupon. Yeah, 100%.
Philippe: Yeah. But, but-
Chad: The Manitoba special.
Yeah.
Philippe: You, you put... Oh, the Manitoba special. You put the money in before you know how good the wedding is. Mm. Oh, and you can tune it back. Well, I got there, oh, I didn't know this was a toonie bar, like you're saying. Yeah. Right? You know? 200- Duct, deduct 50. Yeah. Exactly. 200-
Shubh: 200 means it's an open bar.
Philippe: Right.
Shubh: The dinner's gonna be pretty good.
Philippe: Yeah. All of a sudden after the dinner, I'm buying my own drink. Like, there was a welcome hour. It was a lovely wedding. Yeah. But there was a welcome- Yeah ... there was a welcome reception, free drinks.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: And then they go, "Oh, drink tables, drink tickets are on the [00:55:00] table," two drink tickets.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Then I'm buying after that.
Shubh: I would've left. I just got up and left.
Philippe: Yeah. But I'm, but actually, I was actually buying full price after my two drink tickets. That, I'm taking 50 back, right?
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Or stealing other people's drinks.
Shubh: So you're saying that digital- It was. Yeah. But digital gift giving that you can adjust-
Chad: Dynamically.
Shubh: Okay. So wait, I don't wanna leave Knock Knock 'cause let's, let's rate that idea.
Philippe: Yeah. Wait, let me, let me finish where- Yeah ... where your head's at though.
Shubh: Yeah,
Philippe: yeah. Um, that's not actually what I'm proposing. Oh. I'm fine with giving 200, but I would like it to be at the end of a scavenger hunt because I think that's, like, you gotta work for it a little too.
Shubh: Yeah,
Philippe: yeah. You
Shubh: know? So you can make it so they just get the money right away, or they gotta work for it.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. Like-
Philippe: They, they gotta find some shit under some rocks. Yeah.
Chad: Every week, 50 bucks back to me. Good luck. Good luck.
Philippe: That's so brilliant.
Shubh: Uh-
Chad: Wouldn't that be fun?
Shubh: Knock Knock- Uh ... Who's There is a 68 salsa idea.
Philippe: Uh, no, it's a 75. I, it's 100%. Oh, you know
Shubh: what? Actually, I was [00:56:00] hedging a little. I'm with Philippe. It's a 75.
Philippe: It's, it's perfect. I love this idea. That's why I wanna unlock every door.
Chad: You boys build it, I'll buy it.
Philippe: Boom.
Shubh: No, that's not, no.
Chad: Customer one. Okay. I got enough shit on my plate-
Philippe: You're supposed to be the one-
literally ... who builds it.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah. I love it. Um, I also really love this idea that you can, uh, make people work for a gift.
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Because I- you're actually giving them two gifts. Like some people would be like, "Oh my God, I gotta go do this thing." But your friends who really like, like, "Oh, you created an adventure for me- Yeah
that I also get... There's like a fucking pot of gold at the end of this rainbow? We call it Pot of Gold!!
Chad: Yeah. What about that guy? You know that guy down in Colorado that hid a treasure? He hid like buried- No ... real treasure and people f- went hunting for it for years. People died. Wow.
Shubh: Goon- Goonies. You're describing the-
Chad: Yeah
the plot
Shubh: of Goonies.
Chad: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's create a website that you can host competitions for treasure hunts.
Shubh: Pot of
Philippe: gold. That would be so... Like I'm- Yeah ... honestly, genuinely, yes. Like-
Shubh: Yeah. I could get it if I, [00:57:00] I could do my Irish accent too.
Philippe: Do it.
Chad: Let's hear
Shubh: it. Oh, a bit of a pot of gold then.
Philippe: Okay,
Shubh: it's fine.
How are you gonna be finding all the, uh-
Philippe: That's okay. We don't need
Shubh: to- I gave you $200 at this wedding. But then there was a cash bar, you know?
Philippe: But-
Shubh: Do that ...
Philippe: yeah, on the, sometimes on the weekend I w- Not Quidditch ... I w- you know, I'm working a little too hard, I don't think to text my friends, "Hey- Yeah ... what are we doing this weekend?"
So I get to Friday, I'm like, "Oh fuck, I got no plans." But I just want like a Lord of the Rings sized- A quest ... epic quest. Yeah.
Shubh: Lord of the Quest. Quest. Yeah. Who doesn't want a quest?
Philippe: I know. Yeah. So I would love to sign up for this and now I'm treasure hunting.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Oh my God, and you could have people show up who are, uh, uh...
Then they are put into this, uh, fellowship.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: And they have to complete the quest toge- fuck escape rooms. Escape rooms are played out. Right. You, you could get out of any escape room just by whispering the password.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh- Knock, knock,
Chad: who's there?
Shubh: I think this is an incredible idea. Uh, like a quest, uh, a, y- we're just [00:58:00] expanding the scope here, but like- I think
Chad: it's called geocaching, truthfully.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: That's what
Shubh: my head
Chad: was like. The nerds already invented this.
Shubh: Yeah. But the n- that was for nerds, by nerds. Okay. I'm talking about for everybody.
Philippe: Yeah. I'm talking for elves- Yeah ... and men- Yeah ... and dwarves. Yeah And hobbits. And women.
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: Uh, yeah. Yeah. I mean- You
Shubh: meant humans. I-
Philippe: Yeah, humans. But no, I meant- For
Chad: guys like Le Dain, you could be like, "Listen, I hid a fraudulent transaction in the- Probably Mark is finding-
re- account register"
Shubh: Mark would find it in eight seconds.
Chad: Yeah, he'd find it in eight seconds. Yeah. He's like, "Oh, I see it right here."
Philippe: But I, I was, I was naming the races from Lord of the Rings. Yeah, I
Shubh: got you.
Philippe: Yeah. Yeah,
Shubh: just making sure.
Philippe: And also they, there's very few women in Lord of the Rings. Yeah, yeah.
Yeah. I think there's one scene where they have . They
Shubh: got, at the la- Arwen, that lady elf.
Philippe: In this case, there'd be a lot more women- Yeah ... in our version. Anyway.
Shubh: I think the, first of all, if we just do container it to a wedding or birthday gift, and you open the birthday gift.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: And it's like, "Hey, Philippe has gifted you $200."
And you're like, "Oh, wow, that's so nice. How do I get it?" And you turn the [00:59:00] little card over. It's like, "Scan this QR code." And then it's like, "You have been entered into-"
Chad: Do you accept the challenge?
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. And any of your friends who said no- Yeah ... A, they're giving up the 200 bucks. Totally. A, you could still make sure...
I mean, they could still get the money.
Chad: No, they don't get the money. Do the challenge. This is how it
Philippe: works. Yeah. I agree.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Or it's like a scratch and sniff, and they have to, like, figure out where they've smelt that before. Yeah. And that's where they gotta go.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: I think bring back scratch and sniffs.
Shubh: That's weird. Kind of describing, like, a- That's weird ... an Amazing- That's so weird ... Race version a little bit.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. But there's, like, a... I think that... Would you be annoyed if you just... You know, people get married. There's a lot of work goes in up front. Yeah. The people are tired. Would they be annoyed if the next day they were like, "We can't get this money unless we go on this quest"?
Chad: I mean, if you got a Friday, you got nothing going on, let's go for a quest for a couple grand, that'd be a blast. You know what actually is like a honey- You know who's gonna fucking hate it?
Shubh: Honestly, a honeymoon ...
Chad: is my kid's principal, when I transfer the k- the student fees for the year-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Chad: with a, with a mission- Yeah
to the kid's principal. I think that's
Shubh: a pretty good way for your- [01:00:00] Good
Chad: luck ...
Shubh: your kids to not be in that school anymore.
Chad: You've never met
Philippe: the principal. That's true. Yeah,
Shubh: that's true.
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: How about this, though? Yeah. How about this for an idea?
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: So I, I said I went to a Friday and a Saturday wedding.
Shubh: Yes.
Chad: Like, on the same weekend?
Philippe: On the same weekend. Like a
Chad: back-to-back.
Philippe: Back-to-back. Double. In, in Manitoba. 400... No, in Calgary. Ooh. $400 of gifts. Yeah. I should have combined it.
Shubh: He means 350.
Philippe: For $80 in B- ... Boston Pizza gift cards. Combined the gifts-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Philippe: gave both of
Shubh: them-
Philippe: Oh my gosh ...
Shubh: the
Philippe: starting
Shubh: instructions. Did they know each
Philippe: other? Yeah,
Chad: yeah, yeah.
Philippe: They did. Yeah,
Chad: yeah, yeah, yeah. And
Philippe: it's o- Yeah.
Chad: Winner gets 400.
Philippe: Winner
Shubh: gets 400. Well, honestly, like, you wanna- Loser gets shit. Thanks for the wedding
you wanna test your m- like, "Hey, am I with the right..." I mean, maybe it's too late at that point, but, like- Yeah ... I mean, honestly, this would be a great engagement gift.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Right? You give them a little engagement walking around money, but they gotta go, they got to quest together to find it.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: And then maybe they find out they aren't right for each other.
Chad: This is [01:01:00] so great.
Shubh: What would test a marriage more than a little quest, a little treasure hunt?
Philippe: Yeah. And I like the idea of, like in National Treasure, they have to, like, go talk to experts. Like, like this company who does the quests, I think maybe they build in things that, like, you, you... It's not even in Claude.
Like, it's, there's only very few- Yeah ... like, ancient-
Shubh: It's like Mark L. Dain.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: You have to go- You gotta go to a guy who knows everything about everything. And it's Mark.
Philippe: And it's
Chad: Mark. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: All right. Y- y- this is not necessarily your idea. We kinda came to this. So, so- This
Chad: is your idea.
Philippe: So y- you-
Chad: I'm gonna rate this at the end
Philippe: yeah, you rate this one.
Chad: Yeah Jelly beans? No.
Shubh: Salsas. Sals- salsas. Sal- sal- uh, yeah, salsas, salsas,
Chad: salsas. You said salsas?
Shubh: I say salsas sometimes. That's what I mean. You're not even- Yeah. We've talked about this. And then... Right?
Chad: Salsa. Salsa. Grow up.
Shubh: Salsa. But you salsa- Grow up ... salsa dance, but I eat salsa.
Chad: No, you can't do that.
Shubh: I... Galatea, Galatea.
Chad: All right. Fair. I take that back.
Shubh: You say Galatea. Cut that. I say Galatea. 57 [01:02:00]
Chad: salsas.
Shubh: Ooh.
Chad: This will be fun.
Shubh: That's good.
Chad: And I think it goes up depending on how much money you send.
Shubh: Yeah. It
Chad: also- If I ever hit it big, I'd do, like, a $50,000 one just to fuck with people.
Shubh: Yeah. You know what? It'd be so much fun
venture, venture capital firms should do this.
Chad: Hell yeah. Get a
Shubh: term sheet-
Chad: We're gonna write
Shubh: you- At the end of the term sheet ... we're gonna write you your check.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: But you don't get it until you complete this quest. Oh, well, their quest is-
Chad: Well, that's pretty much what they do. Yeah They're like, "You've gotta re-vest your equity."
Yeah, yeah. "You've gotta do this." Yeah. "You've gotta make sure you don't smoke and drink. You've gotta make sure you don't do all these sort..." That's kinda what they do already. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: They actually do that? You can have, like, no smoking and drinking things in...
Chad: Well, they don't want you to die. It's a term sheet, man.
Right? You can do whatever the heck you want. They
Philippe: don't want you to die. Do you have that? You have signed, "I'm, I, I promise to not smoke a cigarette"?
Chad: No. I'm, I'm not at that level- Yeah ... but there's certainly some people where you can't do certain things, for sure.
Philippe: Damn.
Shubh: I- Even if the bank's like, "Hey, we approved your mortgage."
Chad: Yeah, totally, but you gotta do this physical. At,
Shubh: we approved your mortgage at two and a- Yeah ... at three and a quarter percent-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: if you complete this quest. Otherwise, four and [01:03:00]
Chad: a half. Oh,
Philippe: this is great. Yeah. And it would be good shit, you know? Like in, in National Treasure, the second one, they, like, fly drones- Yeah
on the Statue of Liberty in France. Yeah. But you could do stuff like that,
Shubh: like- Of all the movie references I've made where you're sometimes like, "Shubh, I'm not following," I'm 100% following you with National Treasure.
Philippe: Yeah, I love that
Shubh: too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. We saw the second one in a movie theater in New Zealand of all places.
Philippe: Wow.
Shubh: Um, I, I, I can't... I cannot stop thinking about this idea, where you get a gift and it's a quest.
Philippe: You know what's another crazy quest?
Chad: I'm sending one
Shubh: to you- With money at the
Chad: end ... tonight. Yeah. Oh. You're gonna get an email from me.
Shubh: There's-
Chad: You're gonna go on a quest.
Shubh: There's $60.
Chad: It's gonna be great.
Philippe: I end up on The Rigs.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. Philippe, uh, yeah- Yeah ... Ph- Philippe ends up hosting an event for Galatea. Yeah. What the hell?
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. I had to invite a whole bunch of oil and gas CEOs to this event. That was part of the quest?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Wait a minute. It
Chad: worked great.
Shubh: [01:04:00] I'm out here making calls on Chad's behalf. Yeah. Like, "Hey, have you, uh, how are you handling your oil field logistics?"
Yeah. Wait a minute. Um-
Philippe: There's only one guy you can talk to.
Shubh: Man, this is a really good idea.
Philippe: I love it. Or you know what's another great quest movie?
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: But it's kinda dark. And I, but I just re-watched it last week. Taken. Yeah. You never seen Taken? No,
Shubh: I don't watch that movie. Is that, is that a quest movie? "
Philippe: I have a very particular set of skills." Yes, it is.
He loses his daughter and has to find her in 48 hours.
Shubh: I mean, that's like a-
Philippe: He's gotta, he's gotta fly to France- Search,
Shubh: are search and rescue and the quest the same? Are we-
Philippe: Well, he- Yeah ... flies to France.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Yeah, 100%.
Philippe: Goes-
Chad: Absolutely.
Philippe: Yeah ... goes through her phone to see photos. Yeah. Finds a photo where this guy's in the reflection.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Goes to the, goes to the airport, finds him- Do you think- ... murders him ...
Shubh: Lord of the Rings is still as questy if they're like, "Hey, Frodo, you gotta go stab that eye. There's no ring. Your job, climb that mountain, stab the eye with a fucking little [01:05:00] hobbit knife."
Philippe: It's, it's absolutely just, it's pretty much the same thing.
Shubh: So but I'm saying would that have been a quest still?
Philippe: Yeah, it would've been a quest.
Shubh: All right, okay.
Philippe: You know? I
Shubh: mean, I don't think Samwise gets as on board, though.
Philippe: If, if, if... Well, I'm, uh, s- I think, I think they're still on board. Yeah. Even more so because Sam Weiss was, was, uh, taken by the power of the ring.
You've seen Lord of the Rings or- ... you don't even watch that?
Chad: I don't watch movies, no.
Philippe: Really? You
Shubh: don't watch
Chad: movies? I mean, I get it, The Hobbits. I actually listened to a guy on Bloomberg say the other day that Canadians are like the hobbits, they're gonna save the world.
Philippe: I saw this too. I saw that,
Chad: yeah.
Yeah. I was like, "Yo, that's pretty cool. I appreciate that." Right? Thank you.
Philippe: A little
Shubh: chubbier
Philippe: than I would like,
Chad: but- Right ...
Philippe: it's great. Well, Shubh, we're, we're... I know this is your podcast, but, uh- Oh, we're well over time ... I think, yeah.
Shubh: Uh, that was too much fun. That was the problem.
Chad: We don't have to stop. No, I mean- Give me the salsas.
You gotta rate this idea. This is Philippe's- Which idea? ... first great idea.
Shubh: The, the quest
Philippe: idea? It's not my first great
Chad: idea. The quest idea, yeah, the salsas. How many salsas-
Philippe: You should hear about my dating app idea
Shubh: Oh, he's got- Oh ... he's had a few good ones.
Chad: I heard the
Shubh: Only- What [01:06:00] was my favorite idea, viewers?
Chad: Friends. Only-
Shubh: Only Friends was good.
Philippe: Oh, that's a good one.
Shubh: Um, um-
Philippe: Arra- Arranged is a, a dating app where I would join as a single guy, but I don't do any of the swiping.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Instead, I pick couple friends. So I could pick you and your wife or, or partner.
Chad: Like swinging?
Philippe: No, no. They, you- But you would swipe on my behalf.
Like if
Shubh: you- Couples, couples set up your frien- single friends' profiles- Ah.
Philippe: Oh ... and then you put them together. So you would swipe for me i- if you knew me better. So it's, it makes more sense- I feel like
Shubh: he knows you pretty fucking well.
Philippe: Okay. Yeah, you could swipe and be like, "I think Philippe would like this girl," 'cause I know Philippe always picks the
Chad: wrong girl.
No, no, no. I would just swipe for everybody 'cause then it puts you on the spectrum. Yeah. It's like a bell curve. Oh. If you swipe right for everybody- Yeah ... and you plot those, it'll tell you where you are sort of- I thought you said you
Shubh: were gonna swipe, uh, uh, one way for everybody just to, so you didn't have to lie to the doctor next time.
Chad: Yeah, true. Well, seriously, though, if you think about a dating app and it's one si- Yeah ... you just swipe the same way and then you- Yeah ... plot everybody in a bell curve, and it kinda shows you on the spectrum- [01:07:00] How hot you are? ... statistically how hot you are. Yeah, 100%. Oh,
Philippe: wow.
Shubh: Oh, yeah, but what if, what if- I don't like to think about that
what if, what if it's not what the information you want?
Chad: Then you go on a quest and you get over it. You're totally fine.
Shubh: I just, this quest idea, I don't know exactly the mechanics. Uh, the concept of you're gifting someone, though- A mission ... and you choose to make them work a little bit for that gift, I think is incredible.
. I'm a sucker for quest movies, quest books, quest TV shows, any kind of quest. You tell me there's a quest going on-
Chad: You're
Shubh: in ... I'm on board. Uh- , I think it's a 67 Oh. Even though it's not even that well hashed out.
Philippe: Boom. I love it.
Shubh: I love it, too.
Philippe: Let's make this shit. That would actually be a ton of fun to, like, run a quest company where, like, people call you and they're like, "We need a quest."
Shubh: You're already running, like, a community company. Yeah. How hard is it for you to just create, like, a fucking quest division?
Chad: And in theory, when you go to Tech Thursdays as a founder, it [01:08:00] is kinda like a quest. You're trying to leave there with a term sheet or- Yeah ... you're kind of on a mission, yeah. Some
Shubh: intros.
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: That's true.
Shubh: Oh, man, you could make people-
Philippe: I mean, I do think company building is the closest we are to questing.
Shubh: Maybe
Chad: that's why we all do this. I actually went to a single Tech Thursday. Yeah. Here's a crazy story. Whoa. I went to a single Tech Thursday, and one of the ladies on stage, I sat beside a guy who's a well-known...
A guy named Derek Payne. Yeah. You know Derek. Yep. ZayZoon guy. Um, I sat beside him and watched this lady speak and I said, "I'm gonna get a... I'm gonna get money from her. She's gonna invest in, in Galatea 'cause I think she's so great," and she did. And Derek looked at me and was like, "Not a chance, bud." No way.
I'm down, yeah.
Philippe: Wait, what event was it?
Chad: I forget. It was- Who
Philippe: was it? Can you tell me who? We'll cut it.
Chad: Yeah, we'll cut it. We'll talk about it offline.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: It wasn't somebody you've mentioned already, just-
Chad: No ... just for the audience ... not somebody I've mentioned, no.
Philippe: No. She's never been on our panel.
Chad: Plug to Janet Bannister with- Yeah
Staircase Ventures. Yes. You're so great. Come on the Business- Ah ... Comedy [01:09:00] Podcast. Well, for
Shubh: Staircase-
Chad: Share
Shubh: ideas ... at least come on a Tech Thursday panel.
Philippe: Well, that's a great story. So, so you literally came to a Tech Thursday- Okay ... and got- Yeah ... investment from it. Are you
Shubh: just gonna start
Philippe: pitching- Ooh ... about the value prop?
Uh, no. I'm, I'm, I'm gonna make you write- I was on a
Chad: quest, man. It was a quest.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: I'm gonna make you write a case study after this.
Chad: Yeah. Yeah. 100%.
Philippe: Happy to.
Shubh: Uh, well- Which- ... Tech Thursday, Canada's number one tech gathering community, where companies like Galatea Technologies. W- Is there a second part?
Chad: Uh, that works, too, yeah.
Yeah. We've been called worse.
Shubh: Galatea-
Chad: Technologies- Uh- ... Incorporated Limited.
Shubh: Secured- Do you- ... their largest investor.
Philippe: Do you guys have any m- mean Glassdoor reviews?
Chad: Uh, what is Glassdoor? I feel like I should look at Glassdoor.
Philippe: Oh, no, you shouldn't. I was just curious. Does,
Shubh: does Tech Thursday- Okay ... have any poor Glassdoor reviews?
Philippe: No. We have one employee. A, a Glassdoor is, like, a, a place where employees can go- Like,
Chad: rate my employ-
Shubh: Wait,
Chad: but- ...
Philippe: CEO ...
Shubh: I, I think it would be incredible if Glassdoor had one negative review- ... 'cause you'd have one employee. Oh, I'm 100%
Chad: sure we do.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: It'd be so funny. Um, Mark Le Dain has this idea to do CEOs reading mean [01:10:00] Glassdoors.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Oh, yeah, that'd be great.
Philippe: Yeah. Oh,
Shubh: as a Tech Thursday panel event. Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah, something like that. Like mean tweets, like Jimmy Kimmel. Like Jimmy Kimmel.
Chad: My CEO- Mean Glassdoor podcast ... went for an STD test and lied about
Philippe: it. Yeah. If Ben is lying up, it's good. I get it. He lied
Chad: the wrong way.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: I think he lied very
Chad: responsibly. He sandbagged his STD test. Yeah, yeah, I sandbagged.
Philippe: I- Yeah ... I, like, knew it was gonna come back negative, but I, I s- I w- I wanted to make him guess, you know?
Shubh: You wanted to take him on a little quest.
Philippe: Yeah, take him on a little quest, yeah. Yeah. I wanted to, I wanted to strain the healthcare system more than it needed to.
Chad: Well, we are, uh... I need an MRI.
Shubh: This is actually the funnest episode we've done in a little bit because we are at an hour and 20 minutes, and we usually try to do, like, 45.
Chad: That's it.
Shubh: Yeah.
So Chad, uh- I just want to say thanks, man. That was a lot of fun for us. I don't know if it was fun for you.
Chad: Yeah,
Shubh: you guys are geeky Canadians. Started a little rocky when you called us- It's like I can't believe
Chad: we've never met [01:11:00] before.
Shubh: Started a little rocky- It's so weird ... when you called us both lazy pieces of shit.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Little rocky there, but I think we bounced back. I mean, what separatist, what a separatist.
Philippe: That's right. You can take, you can take- Yeah ... the boy Alberta, and you can also take the Alberta out of Canada. You can
Shubh: take the-
Chad: I'm getting that as a T-shirt.
Shubh: , Well, well I'm very happy to now, now you know us.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Let's go quest.
Chad: Let's go.
Shubh: Let's go do a quest. We should do one podcast episode where we're mobile and we just go on a quest to find the worst business idea.
Chad: Oh, I know where it is.
Shubh: What,
Philippe: where?
Chad: Have you seen that rug and plant store on Edmonton Trail that has to be a front for somebody? They sell, like, silk plants- Whoa ... and rugs, and you- No,
Shubh: but also va- They're all a front ... have you noticed there's still a lot of vacuum repair stores?
Chad: Oh, dude, I have the best vac.
So listen to this. We have a central vac in our house. It was all mangled, messed up. I went to Bowness Vacuum in Bowness.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Like, the best [01:12:00] business ever. Sponsor the podcast. The guy was so awesome. Man. I left a Google, you can see my Google review. He just took care of me, knew everything, threw in a bunch of free stuff, was like, "Chad, come back."
It was phenomenal, one of the best experiences I've ever had in a vacuum shop. It's like- The guy nailed it.
Shubh: - It was- Retail, you know, retail, like, lots of stuff has evaporated.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: There's been the same two vacuum repair shops- Yeah ... on Bow Trail in the southwest and just off Bow Trail since I've lived in Calgary.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: And they're still there. There must be... I always thought maybe they were fronts, but are you... It sounds like
Philippe: you're telling me they're real. Like, unbelievable. I, this, you guys are, you guys are, are, are sparking an idea I have. A, a TV show- Let's
Shubh: do another hour 45 minutes in this, in this studio that we've now-
Philippe: We can cut this into two.
We'll be all right. Yeah,
Shubh: we'll
Philippe: be all right. You know
Shubh: what? I actually- Try
Philippe: two ...
Shubh: hey, this is gonna be the first ever two-parter. And actually that's great for me 'cause I don't e- need to stress about getting my content- Hell yeah ... edited on time.
Philippe: Uh, uh-
Chad: Last guy was a dud. Roll on. Roll on.
Philippe: . So this idea is- That's great ... a TV show.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: [01:13:00] You, it, and it's, it's investigative. It's like Dateline-
Shubh: But for- ...
Philippe: for fronts. And you, like, investigate, is this a front for the mob?
Shubh: Wait, but isn't this- I'm pretty sure that's Dateline. But isn't that just what the police do?
Philippe: No, the police don't do that. They would, the po- if the police were doing that, they're, they'd be shut down.
Shubh: So you're saying we go, we go into a silk plant store.
Philippe: Uh-huh.
Shubh: And what do we do?
Chad: We try to buy a plant.
Philippe: Right.
Shubh: No, but they obviously have plants, guys. I don't think that tells us whether it's a front or not.
Philippe: No, but then, but then you start asking. You're like, "So where, were, are you the boss? Do you own this place?"
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: You know,
Shubh: you start asking questions like that. You d- Oh, I'd love to get a tour of the warehouse sometime.
Philippe: Well, no. Okay. It's not like things are happening in the back. Yeah. But, but fronts, uh, typically are just like, is this a money laundering vehicle?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so you start to investigate. Yeah. Maybe you start counting the people coming in and out. Yeah. You know? Mm-hmm. You sp- you could spend a month out there and just be like, "There's no way these people are paying the bills for this." Yeah. Mm-hmm. You know? And, and then you go- You're
Shubh: saying the cops don't do this?
Philippe: No. Wait, what do you mean? The cops are probably getting paid off. [01:14:00]
Shubh: Can't wait till we get the mayor on the podcast. Uh, okay. So you're based out of- In
Philippe: Montreal ...
Shubh: uh- In Montreal ... I mean, you, I mean, you would, you would have a hard time finding a store that wasn't one, that wasn't. That's right.
Philippe: Oh, no.
Shubh: I really like this idea.
So you're saying we're running our own private investigative firm.
Philippe: It's a TV show.
Shubh: But we're exclusively looking at... Well, of course, the, but the sh- the show's about the firm.
Philippe: I feel like the
Shubh: concept- It's like selling- ... might actually be
Chad: terrible
Shubh: though ... it's like Selling Sunset, but we're- Right ... we're, we're very specifically focused PIs.
Uh, I'm a little worried because what if we run immediately afoul of organized crime?
Chad: Well, we will.
Philippe: Yeah. That's the g- the point of this.
Chad: I got a guy. We're fine.
Shubh: What if, uh- You're connected ... what's, what if we found out it's, like, organized crime? We're like, "Nah," we just, like, bail out.
Chad: I feel like
Philippe: the- That's what we would be invested-
Shubh: No, no, we, we just wanna, we want the mom-and-pop crime.
The-
Chad: The blue collar stuff ...
Shubh: yeah, the crime that's not, that they're not- White collar ... connected enough to- Yeah ... come back and get me.
Philippe: But those people aren't fronts. Those people are [01:15:00] just
Chad: running bad businesses. Can you imagine watching the whole arc of an episode going into a silk plant and a rug store, and the whole arc, and you get to the end, and it's like, it is a front, and people would just be like, "No shit."
We knew, we literally knew that. Yeah, but hold on to that. But what if- When we first saw the... No shit it's a front ... what if you
Shubh: get to the episode and it's, and then you, we follow this journey.
Chad: And it's just a fucking terrible business, just like-
Shubh: No, but what if- ... a
Chad: terrible business ...
Shubh: what if it turns out it's an incredible business?
What if- Oh ... all of us are fucking working our asses off building these fucking companies- And it's silk plants ... for equity that never amount to anything.
Chad: I've done this stuff.
Shubh: And this guy is like, turns out he's cash flowing $400,000
Chad: on a silk plant. Two best businesses in the entire world, the car wash and one of those fucking rental units where you put your shit.
Yeah. And per square foot, you rent it for more money than this office, more money- Yeah ... than your apartment. It's ridiculous.
Shubh: Space, yeah. Uh-
Chad: It is the craziest business ever.
Shubh: But I do kinda like this idea. I do like, uh-
Philippe: Well, then, then it would follow on, and maybe you do discover it is organized crime, and then you start doing, you know, you [01:16:00] dig into that organized crime.
It's like- What do you think? ... can I
Shubh: suggest a format change out of a TV show?
Philippe: Okay.
Shubh: This is like, you know, the true crime podcasts-
Philippe: Yeah ...
Shubh: about, like, murderers historically. We should do true crime podcast, but about, like- White collar crime ... about white collar crime.
Philippe: Yeah. That'd be sick ... I
Shubh: mean, maybe less, a little less salacious
Philippe: And the final season is, uh, just us investigating Mark Le Dain.
And
Shubh: it turns out- Did you guys not do this- ... turns out he's squeaky clean.
Chad: Did you guys not do exactly this a couple weeks ago? You had a guy on your podcast and he proceeded to get arrested.
So we've done this. He, he
Philippe: Oh, okay. Who? No, you're talking, you're talking about the, the panelist at Tech Thursday.
Chad: Yeah, that guy.
Shubh: Oh, yeah. Not on the pod- Yeah ... this podcast, Squeak, this airtight. Squeaky
Chad: clean.
Shubh: Yeah, Tech
Philippe: Thursday. He, I think his, uh, I think his court date is coming up.
And-
Chad: Are we gonna go? I mean, we could film our first podcast episode at the court date.
Shubh: Yeah, but that's not, what he did was not white collar crime.
Philippe: Yeah, it was, uh- I mean, unless he
Shubh: took his clothes off- Not really blue collar crime either ... and ran next door. But it was just crime.
Chad: General crime.
Philippe: Yeah. It was, it was down collar crime.
Shubh: I'm trying to
Chad: find- He [01:17:00] was naked, so it was no collar crime. I
Shubh: like this idea that there's like- He did no collar crime. ... an eight-part podcast episode about a vacuum shop.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: And at the end you realize there's- Yeah ... a stash in like the- Yeah ... like the vacuum bags.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: The old Singer vacuum bags that no one uses- I know them
anymore are just- Yeah ... stuffed full of cash.
Chad: I use them.
Shubh: Yeah, but-
Chad: But go on, yes.
Shubh: Right? And- Do you
Philippe: prefer a Central Vac to, like, a Dyson?
Chad: Oh, yeah.
Shubh: Wow.
Chad: 100%. Who-
Shubh: I grew up with a Central Vac, and then when we moved into this house it was, it was plumbed for Central Vac. We never got one.
Chad: Oh, it's
Shubh: the best. We just wanted a regular vacuum.
Chad: I don't know why people wouldn't.
Shubh: There's two points of failure. Do you have one...
Chad: There's a, there's a few things you should do in your life, and I w- highly recommend it. And if you haven't- ... I'm gonna explain it. Buy the most expensive toilet paper money can buy. Just once, try it out. Yeah. See what you think.
Shubh: How do you go back, though?
Chad: You will never go back. It's
Shubh: like flying first class one time.
Chad: The other thing is walk into Pottery Barn and throw your fucking credit card down and just say, "Make my bed look like this bed." Because no matter what you do, if you go in there and you pick it out- Yeah ... without [01:18:00] having one of these bed wizards that work at- Yeah.
Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Chad: you will leave with, like, five grand worth of bedding. But you sleep in that bed and it's like you live in a hotel. It is the craziest thing in the entire world. Everybody should do it. So you go into Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn, throw your credit card down- Yeah ... and just point to the bed and be like, "Give me that.
Everything to do with that."
Shubh: If you went to a bed shop- Yeah ... that wasn't Crate & Barrel-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: but they were like, "Hey, we, this is a great bed shop. We will make your bed look like a bed in a- Yeah ... magazine."
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Would you think that place was a front?
Chad: Oh, it depends what it smells like
Shubh: Yeah. What's the revenue
Chad: model?
Right? What is your what is your revenue model?
Shubh: Yeah. Um-
Chad: Where are these linens from? Let me see your warehouse.
Shubh: A, a true crime, like, mildly interesting white collar podcast I would probably tune into. Like, episode three, Phil and Chad are narrating that they went to the silk plant shop.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: And then they got [01:19:00] coffee.
It's like a stakeout, right? You s- Yeah ... you, you did a stakeout, and then you were, like, tracking all the people coming in.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: You're like, "That guy was in here three months ago for- He's
Chad: back ...
Shubh: a silk plant." Yeah. "Why is he back?" And he carried another silk plant out.
Philippe: And it was the same
Shubh: plant. It's identical to the last silk plant.
Philippe: That would be, like, so intriguing. I feel like I would fall asleep
Shubh: watching that though. And then you follow him to where- wherever he's going, and then you realize he's got, like, a restaurant and needs a whole bunch- Yeah ... of silk plants. But, like, uh, I think, I think it's good.
Chad: Man, I'm at the point where, like, I take my kids grocery shopping, and one of them accidentally puts something in the cart that I miss under, and I feel like I...
I'm like, "Should I go back and pay- Yeah ... for this itchy band noodle?"
Shubh: Yep.
Philippe: Uh, do you go back?
Chad: Always. Every time.
Shubh: Yeah, me too.
Philippe: You go back and pay?
Chad: Why wouldn't you?
Shubh: Yeah. I don't like stealing.
Philippe: I, uh- ... I was at the liquor store the other day, and, uh, I noticed that-
Shubh: A bunch of liquor fell into your pants. And you left.
Philippe: No. Um, uh, uh, the, the [01:20:00] cashier's thing was, was having an issue. It would, like, s- scan. She would scan- The cashier's
Chad: thing. Go
Philippe: deeper. The... S- Go deeper. Go deeper ... s- sorry. Cash
Shubh: register.
Philippe: The cash register. The scanner? The scanner. She would scan one thing. Yeah. It wouldn't go through. She would scan another, and then her machine would alert her that the item was not found, and then she'd go, "Oh, shoot," and then rescan the second one.
But she ended up scanning, like, eight things, and two went undetected.
Shubh: And what'd you do?
Philippe: I just paid for my six bottles
Chad: And you got eight
Philippe: And I got eight. Yep.
Shubh: I would have told her.
Philippe: You would have told her?
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: I didn't.
Chad: Man, I feel like there's a whole quest here-
Philippe: Yep ...
Chad: to release the name of said liquor store that gives away two bottles.
Two free ones for every eight, like.
Shubh: Yeah, there's a hack. And, and- Yeah ... and that's actually, those two bottles are what Phil gave to his wedding gift. Yeah.
Philippe: I actually did give one- Yeah ... as a birthday present. Yeah. I said, "Happy Birthday." Yeah. I paid for this. Well, Phil, you shouldn't have.
Shubh: Trust me, I didn't. [01:21:00]
Philippe: I feel like that's like as close, like y- I'm not getting, I'm not, that's not stealing.
I'm, I'm just, uh, taking advantage. And then, yeah, hey, come on, how much tax is on a bottle of booze? I think
Chad: technically if you come on a podcast and talk about it, it is, it is-
Philippe: Stealing?
Chad: It might be.
Philippe: It might be. I just, I, it's an error of omission.
Chad: Yeah. An error of omission I think is stealing, yeah. I'm pretty sure that's called stealing.
Shubh: Yeah. I'm sure the- Yeah ... mom-and-pop sh- uh, the, the liquor store is a front for something, so it's
Chad: probably fine. Yeah.
Philippe: It would be LCBO in key way.
Shubh: Oh, then who gives a shit?
Chad: And man, don't admit- Yeah ... to it and call it out. Now they're gonna look at the security tape and
Shubh: be like- Nobody in Ontario, nobody, nobody in Ontario has listened to this shit
Chad: yeah. Yeah. They don't like business comedy podcasts.
Shubh: Yes. That's right. They're not-
Philippe: No, Shubh- ... one of them. Right ... Shubh, uh, Sh- Shubh cuts anything controversial I say. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So he's-
Shubh: That is absolutely not true. I cut the top 3% of the most controversial stuff he says, not for my benefit-
Chad: Right ...
Shubh: for his.
Chad: That comes back. That lives
Shubh: on forever. [01:22:00] I'm keeping this liquor store thing in. Yeah, the digital artifact. That's an important, I'm keeping this liquor store thing in- Yeah ... for sure because, uh, it made me look great. Right? But you're like, "I would give it back." People are gonna be like, "Wow, I heard about Philippe and the liquor store.
My parents owned a liquor store for 30 years."
Chad: Yeah. Do
Shubh: they really? Just sh- no. Oh. They just went under, and they'll be telling me this, somebody. Right. And they'll be like- Yeah ... "Wow, yeah, we gotta support the small business owners." Uh, you know who doesn't? Philippe. Yeah, big time.
Chad: And just, just you go there one day.
For some off-chance reason, you go to Ontario, you go to this liquor store, and you just see a little picture of him.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Like, thief.
Shubh: Yeah, it's-
Chad: Watch this guy. Yeah, yeah,
Shubh: yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Chad: Yeah. He's not allowed here. Yeah, that's
Shubh: good.
Philippe: Thief by omission.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Did not return, did not return. Yeah, yeah,
Chad: yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Found a flaw in our payment processing system. Did not alert cashier.
Shubh: Did a six-episode podcast series about-
Chad: Yeah ...
Shubh: about, uh, how he got away with it.
Chad: Yeah. It
Shubh: turns out at the end you and I narc on him. And that last episode is him getting led away.
Chad: Yeah. Goodbye.
Philippe: Yeah. [01:23:00] All right. I do have one other business idea, and I actually think it's a good one.
Shubh: Are we still going?
Chad: I'm ready.
Philippe: I don't know if you wanna wrap or not.
Chad: I mean, we can-
Philippe: It depends if you're trying to squeeze out two parts out of this. Yeah,
Shubh: fuck it. Let's go.
Philippe: Um, how, do you guys boat? This boat
Chad: So let me tell you a, a couple things in life
Shubh: I've been on three boats this summer.
Philippe: Okay.
Shubh: Keep going.
Chad: The first time we talked, you told me something about boats and planes and...
Shubh: What? I did?
Chad: That you should rent them.
Shubh: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, keep going,
Chad: yeah. Yeah. But go ahead. No, I'm into boats.
Shubh: Okay,
Chad: you're into boats? I rent, I rent my boats. I don't own my boats. Yeah.
Shubh: Okay.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: Don't own a boat.
Philippe: Okay.
Chad: Don't own a boat. There's a-
Shubh: We, we live on a lake ...
Chad: there's a few things that you should rent in your life.
Shubh: Yeah. You
Chad: don't- Boats are one of them ...
Shubh: don't own a private jet. Rent a private jet.
Chad: Rent it.
Shubh: Yeah. It's like, what the fuck?
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: It's like, as if you fucking guys even ca- are in a position to make that
Philippe: choice.
Um, do, where do you drive your boat? [01:24:00]
Chad: Where do I drive my boat?
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: My rental boat? Yeah. In water. Uh, typically in a lake, yes.
Philippe: In a lake?
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: Do, d- do you ever need a navigating tool to get around the lake? Or is it
Chad: kind of a- Uh, no, not generally.
Philippe: Okay. I see. This is my idea is-
Chad: Your idea is a compass. This is cool.
Keep going. Keep going. My idea is
Shubh: Starlink and an iPhone.
Chad: Wait for this.
Philippe: Uh, do you have a boat? Do I have a boat? Do, do, do, uh, do you drive boats?
Shubh: I've been, I've, I've been on some boats recently, yeah.
Philippe: Okay, and did they use navigating devices or no?
Shubh: Uh, no. One said, "Here's, uh, where you can see if there's fish around you."
And I said, "We're not gonna need that."
Philippe: Okay. Okay. That's a, that's not a map. So, so my house is- Well, yeah, a
Shubh: fish- it was a fish map ...
Philippe: so, so I, I suppose there are very niche maps that exist in the world.
Shubh: Right.
Philippe: One is called, uh, fatty maps, which is like, uh-
Shubh: I got a great bit. I'm gonna- I'm not gonna do it.
Philippe: It's like topographical maps to, to show you, like, what [01:25:00] route you should take when you're doing backcountry skiing.
Shubh: Hmm.
Philippe: I don't backcountry ski. My friends use it. It got bought by Garmin. Garmin just killed it, and they were so upset.
Shubh: Right.
Philippe: And so they're, like, actively following the... And, and one of my friends is, um, uh, an investor, and he's investing in new map- new maps that can kind of replace fatty maps. Hmm. And, uh, so, uh, I just got back from, from the lake.
The lake I'm on has 14,000 islands, and so you have to n- What
Chad: fucking lake are you on with 14,000 islands? Lake, um, Lake of the Woods. Is it a ocean?
Philippe: Lake of the Woods. It's huge. Lake of the Woods. Okay. We're good. It borders Minnesota- Yeah ... uh, um- The land ... Ontario, and Manitoba ... land of 10,000
Chad: lakes. No maps.
Philippe: No maps.
Well, the, the map that you have is, like, all it is is, is-
Chad: Paper.
Philippe: Paper ... is... No, it's on your phone. Okay. It's called Navionics. Okay. But it's so high, it's incredibly hard to zoom in. You can't really route from it. So, like, if I wanna go from- Shit wow ... one side of the, the map-
Shubh: Yep ...
Philippe: one [01:26:00] side of the lake to the other, and I gotta know, like, red buoy.
I never know what side the buoy's on, and so what you end up doing is you just, like, cut it super close on either side and you're just like- Right. Yeah ... 'cause they're not gonna put it right on top of the- You split, you split the
Shubh: difference,
Philippe: yeah. You split the difference. They're not putting it right on top of the rock.
Uh, so you just, like go super close to it. Um-
Chad: I mean, if I was putting down buoys, I'd put it right on top of the rocks. Because I, I would just- Yeah ... assume most people won't drive for the fucking buoy. They'll go around it.
Shubh: Right.
Philippe: Right.
Chad: So I would put the buoy right on-
Philippe: Well, there are those- ... top ... kind of buoys called ring buoys, which are buoys that demarcate when they're right on top of the rock.
Man,
Chad: do Manitoba people know this much about boating? I think they...
Shubh: Yes I know a lot of lakes ...
Chad: okay, so I carry three things in my wallet. I carry a Costco card, I carry a library card, and I carry a fucking boating license, but I don't ever use the boating license. I just carry it around
Philippe: Oh, just to be like, "Yeah, I got this"
Chad: the off chance-
Philippe: Yeah ...
Chad: that I come across a boat that's available for rent. Yeah. That I can-
Philippe: Yeah ...
Chad: like, literally- Right ... if I showed you my wallet, I only have three cards in there, a, a [01:27:00] library card, a Costco card, and a pleasure craft license.
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: But I don't know shit about buoys. I don't know shit about boating.
Yeah. This is incredible.
Philippe: Well, I mean, you're saying this- I- the, the boating license is so irrelevant, I don't even keep mine. It's n- I've never gotten it. What? Yeah. Like, 'cause, 'cause- But
Chad: you know what a ring buoy is.
Philippe: Yeah, because you learn that when you've got a boat all the time.
Chad: How often do you boat?
Philippe: Well, I-
Chad: What kind of boat do you own?
Philippe: We own just, like, a, um, it's like a f- a fishing boat Lund with a 60 on the back. It's like a
Chad: yacht. Oh.
Philippe: It's a very small-
Chad: They call that the Manitoba yacht.
Philippe: The Manitoba yacht. It's
Chad: aluminum?
Philippe: It's aluminum. Sick, yeah. Yeah. Manitoba yacht. It's aluminum. You know a
Shubh: little bit about boats. You know what they're made out of.
Chad: Aluminum.
Philippe: Aluminum. So my concept is just, like, niche maps. Like, what else could you add to a map that- Yeah. Yeah ... only serves a small audience that people are pay, uh, would pay for, so- You know
Shubh: who'd be a customer of your niche maps? Our questing company.
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah. There you go.
Chad: And the fronts. Here's the front map.
Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: Like Grand Theft Auto. Yeah. Like, this place, this, this vacuum [01:28:00] store, not the one in Bowness, the other one, front. Front.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: So you're talking niche maps.
Philippe: So this one would be like, it's like Google Maps, but for the water, where, like- Okay ... you can actually put it on, and it'll kinda tell you, like, "Buoy's coming up.
You wanna be on this side." And, like, w- you, you'll kn- like, it will follow you. The heads-up
Chad: display.
Philippe: Heads-up display. Like, I can't tell you how bad... It's, it would be like driving with an aerial, always, like, a, a, a high aerial view of all of downtown Calgary, is kind of what, like, Navionics is, where you're just like, "This is so pointless- Right
I can't even use this." And so yeah, I'm, I'm, yeah, so I guess what I'm thinking is, like, yeah, are there other things that you can niche out? I mean, AllTrails is another example. But boating for me was, like, an obvious one, where, like, people would pay for a much better solution. This is, like, the most pretentious- It's
Shubh: pretty bougie.
Philippe: It's pretty
Shubh: bougie. But listen, I love selling shit to rich people, right? 'Cause they just buy it.
Chad: Yeah, you can make the subscription cost wild.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Remember when the, uh, what- 200 bucks ... navigation systems first- Not the Lunds. The
Chad: [01:29:00] Lunds won't pay for it, but the yacht money- Yeah ... they're in.
Shubh: Remember, uh, when, um, navigation systems first came out in cars- Yeah
and you'd get it in your car, and- That was it. That was the point in time you had the map for. That was what you had in your car from that point forward unless you got the upgrade from the car dealership, which in many cases you had to pay for.
Chad: Man, you're incredibly old.
Shubh: I'm very old.
Chad: Wow.
Shubh: So- Do
Chad: you have those CDs still?
Shubh: I still got CDs. Um, so you would have to do that. I'm just saying this could be the same thing for the boat. Like, you get your one... It doesn't have to be, it's like automatic, hey, you gotta renew
Philippe: Yeah ...
Shubh: and you get your new download of GIS data.
Chad: This shit doesn't change, man. We're talking about geology. No, it does.
It won't change for m-
Shubh: change... Well, you don't think the buoy, you don't think the buoy moves?
Chad: The buoy doesn't move.
Shubh: You don't think if there's a new sea store that wasn't there last summer that's maybe moved? Nope.
Philippe: The buoy, the buoy- Nope ... does not move, but they do add new buoys sometimes. [01:30:00]
Shubh: Yep.
Philippe: But you know what else could be on there?
Shubh: Yeah ...
Philippe: with your friend with the fishing map?
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: You could, you could pay for the fishing spots.
Shubh: Yeah, like a, it's like Waze or Google, uh, like, a, when there's a traffic accident except the opposite. "Hey, there's a bunch of fish there today."
Philippe: Yeah. Or like Chad-
Chad: It's terrible, though.
Shubh: Why?
Chad: I don't want to tell people about it.
It's like Banff. Banff used to be so awesome, and now Instagram told everybody about it, and you go out there, and it's just chaos. Yeah. It's the worst. But you're, you're, you're
Shubh: missing the barrier for entry for the fish map.
Chad: Oh, we're trying to monetize this.
Shubh: Oh, big time. Yeah, we're selling this shit. Oh, okay.
Yeah. We're the ones
Chad: on the
Philippe: end.
Chad: Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah. We're the end guys. Okay.
Shubh: We're, we're selling this data.
Chad: We could actually fuck with people and send them to other fish spots and keep- ... the really good ones- Yeah ... like, a hide, depending on what you pay and your, your model.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah.
Chad: Yeah. And then make them do quests on the fucking lake- Yeah
to get to the best fish spot. You have to- What- ... drive through these buoys.
Shubh: What are other, like, uh- Okay ... unexplored data, uh, map data places, [01:31:00] things?
Philippe: Well, in my mind, there's, like, probably an opportunity as well for, like, uh-
Chad: These liquor stores have failing point of sale systems- Yeah ... in which you can scan eight bottles-
and only get six.
Shubh: Uh, Chad grew up in- Yeah ... we talked about Sherwood Park.
Chad: Yeah, yeah.
Shubh: Liquor store per capita, at least at that time-
Chad: Incredible ...
Shubh: highest liquor stores per capita in the country.
Philippe: Wow.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: Amazing.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: Nobody drinks. They are all a front.
Shubh: Yeah. Everyone's a front.
Chad: We must go investigate.
Shubh: Sometimes it's a, there's a liquor store that's like-
Chad: Boys, get in the Ford Ranger pickup truck. Let's go.
Shubh: There's a-
Chad: We're going on a quest.
Shubh: Uh, yeah. What other data, other map data?
Philippe: Well, I think there's a, the object- You know, Dua Lipa just, just released a list of, of her favorite places to go in, um, Europe, like restaurants.
Shubh: Right.
Philippe: And I think there's, like, way more of an opportunity for that. Like, you could buy celebrities' lists of favorite places they like to go in the issue.
Or just
Chad: find them on Google Maps and subscribe. [01:32:00]
Philippe: W- find those people?
Chad: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah.
Chad: You don't do that?
Shubh: What?
Philippe: Can you do that?
Chad: Yeah. Like, I could find you if you've ever let a, left a review on Google Maps, and I could follow you and see the things that you like and don't like. This is how I make fun of my friends all the time.
Shubh: What? Yeah. That's a thing?
Chad: Yeah. Go find your buddies and watch- I never leave a review ... they leave, like, a five-star review at Boston Pizza. Oh my gosh. Yeah. One of my favorite pastimes in the entire world- I will- ... is leaving reviews on Google. I
Shubh: will
Chad: tell- And I'm so good at it. I should read you a couple.
Shubh: I will tell the people if I think I did a good job.
I don't like to leave Google reviews.
Chad: Oh, I love it. I only leave good ones and, but they're ridiculous.
Shubh: Yeah. Come on. I, I
Chad: only- It's the funniest thing to do in the world. Oh, interesting. 'Cause one day my kids are gonna find it.
Shubh: But do you think Dua Lipa's out there leaving-
Chad: I'm leaving quests for my little kids, like-
Shubh: Do you think, do you think Dua Lipa's leaving, like, a five-star review for, like, a restaurant in Paris?
I don't even know who
Dua
Chad: Lipa is. I don't think, I don't think she- I don't know what that means.
Philippe: You don't know
Chad: who she is? I'm super confused here.
Philippe: Oh,
Shubh: she's a- She's a, she's a celebrity.
Chad: She sounds great.
Shubh: Singer.
Philippe: She's lovely. Okay. She's, yeah.
Shubh: Performer.
Chad: That's great.
Philippe: [01:33:00] She's like, she's the, she's the it thing right now.
Chad: Yeah. She's the it thing. Oh.
Shubh: Uh, yeah. I'm just ... I think you'd have to just, like, really niche down. I think you could just, you should just start with developing, like, incredible data set for Lake of the Woods, and just, like, go door to door with all the, uh- Right ... very wealthy people who I'm sure are quite cosmopolitan-
who bring, who bring these lakes. Just be like, "Hey, man. You want better data?"
Steve did a bit for, like, three minutes- Yeah ... that I had to bleep out because- This is- ... it was very interesting ... this is my biggest conspiracy
Philippe: theory.
Shubh: Yeah. I don't, I don't
Chad: think it's- It's not a conspiracy- ... a conspiracy
Shubh: theory at all ...
Chad: I'll go on a quest and investigate it with you. I don't think that's a- You were talking about?
100%. Yeah, okay. 1,000%
Shubh: you were. There's no conspiracy theory. I think it's pretty much exactly-
Chad: Any common sense person would be like, yeah ...
Philippe: yeah. Yeah, okay, great. That would be a good quest. That would be a great- Yeah ... Hit Hard podcast. Yeah.
Shubh: I think you guys are just, with some of your recent quests, you're just describing private investigative work.
You're just describing- Maybe I just wanna be a PI ... you're just describing being [01:34:00] detectives who work outside the system. Mm. So you're not constrained by the system, right? Mm.
Chad: And don't get paychecks. Yeah. We get, we get little things when we solve the mission.
Shubh: When I was-
Chad: We get e-transfers-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Chad: when we solve the mission.
Shubh: That's, again, you're just describing pri- So- You're just describing being a PI. That's, that, like, that is what that job is.
Chad: Straight up the business model, yeah.
Shubh: I wanted to be an FBI agent when I was a kid, but not the kind of FBI agent, like, um, uh, that was, like, physically taking down criminals. You wanna be
Chad: Kash Patel.
The one that was, like- You wanna be, like, the hall- Yeah. ... at the hockey game chugging beers. Yeah. This fits a lot, actually. Yeah.
Shubh: This is, uh... It's ki- like, it's a very funny, but also kind of offensive. Um, um, I know I wanted to be the guy who would, like, figure stuff out, you know? Mm. Like, uh, the, the FBI agent who figures stuff out.
So, like, there was a movie called The Siege, which was a, like a- Yeah ... a, a, kind of a, sort of a counter-terrorism type deal. [01:35:00] Yeah. It was the guys who would, like, piece the shit together in the background.
Chad: Isn't that all FBI people? Like, are there FBI people that just don't figure shit out? Well, you got the f- Like, that's Mike.
Mike doesn't figure shit out. You got the FBIs- No, no, no. Mike- There's the FBI people- Mike's just a gun guy ... who go to the
Shubh: Olympics- Mike's
Chad: a gun
Shubh: guy ... to drink with winning hockey teams. Yeah. You got those guys.
Chad: Yeah,
Shubh: yeah. Uh, but then you got real FBI agents who are, like, on the ground.
Chad: So the rest of them.
Shubh: Yeah. There are agents who are, like- You know, they're in the field office, but they're on the ground. Yeah. But the guys who, like, figure the thing out and work the case for, like, three years, and then- Like the
Chad: pictures on the wall- Like- ... and the strings.
Shubh: Yeah. And they're like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah." Big time.
Big
Philippe: time. That's what you wanted to be?
Shubh: Yeah, wanted to be. Why
Philippe: didn't you do it?
Shubh: Uh, probably 'cause I was scared of everything.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah, it'd be a scary job.
Philippe: I applied to be a CSIS, uh, officer.
Shubh: And?
Philippe: I went four, three rounds.
Shubh: And? It was
Chad: the mustache. It was the mustache. They were like, "Hmm."
Shubh: Then they asked how many partners he's had.
And the fucking lie detector came on. Exactly,
Chad: yeah, yeah. Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep. He said, "Five." Actually, negative two.
Shubh: Negative two. [01:36:00] Uh, yeah. Uh, what were we talking about? Maps. Yeah, I- I don't love this idea as much,
Philippe: Yeah, it was very just niche to, to... I just thought about this in the last three weeks.
Yeah. I was like, I think that's actually a good money-making idea. It's just
Shubh: like- You could probably just... If you could, if you... 'Cause you could just drive a boat around with a f- like, some cameras and s- some geo stuff, collecting the data.
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: And then you could, you know, clot it up to turn it into some, like, something that's accessible for- Well, I
Chad: think- They straight up make satellites that have two-millimeter resolution.
You could, like-
Shubh: Yeah, I don't think they're flying those over the lake and the woods, though.
Chad: 100% they are. Yeah, they're flying-
Philippe: I
Chad: think they
Philippe: are, for sure ...
Chad: Sentinel flies all over.
Philippe: I, I think you just, like- He
Shubh: said they're not.
Chad: Wow.
Shubh: He said he's got a really high view.
Philippe: No, uh, well, I can show you the UI for boating.
He's just got the
Chad: shit map UI.
Philippe: Yeah. But these guys
Chad: have- We can fix that.
Philippe: Yeah. W- You
Chad: can- You know what the shitty part about a lake is? When you zoom in wide enough, it just looks like this fucking blue wall. Like, it, it doesn't change. It's- The lights just go out ... literally- Yeah ... been here too long.
Shubh: Did they just, they just close us out?
Yeah, they told
Chad: us we [01:37:00] gotta get
Shubh: out. Well, 1:46. That's it. Two podcasts? Two podcasts. We-
Philippe: Wait, what do you guys rate my-
Shubh: Hey ...
Philippe: my, uh, i- idea?
Shubh: I'm gonna give it a des- uh, no rating because I, I don't understand enough of the market.
Philippe: All right. Don't air that pitch then.
Shubh: No, I'm gonna air the hell out of
Chad: it. Yeah, I give it negative six salsas.
Shubh: Yeah.
Chad: That's a terrible idea. It's so pretentious. They have Google Maps.
Shubh: Yeah. The lights are just going on and off.
Chad: You can create
Philippe: your own maps. I
Chad: think they're telling us they want-
Philippe: You
Chad: can label your own
Shubh: maps. Yeah. They're like, uh, "Maybe if we just..." Uh, it's like the 1987 World Junior Hockey Championship where they couldn't stop the, the- Yeah
two teams from fighting. They're just turning the lights on and off.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: I mean, they have been incredibly generous with their time. It is 6:20
Philippe: in the evening. Okay. Yeah. Let's get the hell out of here. Chad- Thanks for coming ... this was delightful. This was fun. It is
Shubh: 6:20. You're, you're our first ever two-part guest episode.
Chad: I can't wait to never see you guys again. I'll be at the office.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah. Good
Chad: luck.
Shubh: Yeah. We'll be talking about you after. Yeah. Be like, "Hey, remember that fucking guy when he told us we were too weak to climb a mountain?"
Chad: Yeah.
Shubh: How did he know?
Chad: Knock, knock. Who's there?
Shubh: Knock, knock. [01:38:00] Who's there? I climbed that mountain, fucker.
All right. Thanks, buddy. Thanks, Philip. Bye.
Chad: Good luck on your next test. Thanks.
Shubh: And that's a wrap.
