Shubh: [00:00:00] Okay.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Oh, I'm a little, a little nervous.
Philippe: Why are you nervous, Shubh? 'Cause your wife is here?
Shubh: I'm nervous because my worlds are colliding.
Philippe: I'm,
Shubh: I'm also, I'm also- Welcome You tried
Chaz: to keep us separated ...
Shubh: I'm also nervous because I'm a control freak about the audio and video, and now Matt's doing it, so I feel very comfortable that he's doing it, but I'm also nervous because I'm not doing it.
Philippe: Yeah, the, where are we at, Shubh?
Shubh: Um, well, I'm gonna do a little welcome.
Philippe: Oh, okay.
Shubh: I don't know what episode number. You know what? We're gonna make this the first episode coming out of the break.
Philippe: As episode one of season two.
Shubh: Are we- Should we call this season two?
Philippe: Yeah, season
Shubh: two. That's a fucking great idea.
Welcome to episode one... Oh, wait, Matt, are we good to go? Yo, Matt, hey, listen, man. When you say-
Rita: Can
Shubh: he see us? ... I'm, I'm good to go- Can Chaz see us? Yeah. I believe- Hey. Hi ... you are mitigating my confidence level. Did you hear that? Matt gave me one of the, [00:01:00] "Uh, Matt, are we good to go?" He's like, "Yep, we are good to go, I believe."
Philippe: If this is, uh, episode one of season two- Yeah ... everything has to be a lot better, though. You understand? Like,
Shubh: we have to- No, that's too much pressure for me. No, we're, we're in a, already a better place. Like, look at this place.
Philippe: I know.
Shubh: Okay. Uh, Matt, you believe we're good? Yes. Yeah. Okay. Absolutely. Welcome to episode...
Shit. Ready? Go again.
Shubh: Welcome to season two, episode one of Your Business is on the Line, the podcast where serious people come on and pitch unserious business ideas I'm here with co-host Philippe Burns.
Philippe: [00:02:00] Hello.
Shubh: And, um, I've never been more excited about having a guest on this podcast. Philippe, do you know who the guest is today?
Philippe: Y- yes, it's you. It's, uh, your wife.
Shubh: It's my wife, Rita. Rita Soin. Can I say Dr. Rita Soin?
Rita: Sure.
Shubh: Yeah, Dr. Rita Soin.
Rita: Let's make me sound important.
Shubh: Yeah. Oh my God, we don't need to make you sound anything. This is so exciting. I'm also, uh-
Philippe: It, this looks like you guys are reliving your, your, your, the time you first met
Shubh: I'm actually just ve- '
Rita: Cause we look so nervous.
Shubh: I'm actually very, very nervous because I'm worried about all the questions Philippe is gonna ask Rita today. We are- That's
Philippe: right. What's your love life like?
Shubh: We are co-
Rita: We got video, so. Whoa.
Shubh: We are coming to you from Red Mile Records. Red Mile Records with Matt and, uh, Alec.
This is a, uh, new Calgary recording studio, podcast studio. Look at how fucking professional this looks.
Rita: It is so nice. Yeah, this [00:03:00] is legit. We are sitting on couches.
Shubh: Does it look better or worse than, uh, random chairs pulled out of a storage closet with paint drop cloths from the dollar store on them?
Philippe: All right.
Let's, uh, let's stop making fun of my office.
Shubh: That was technically my office.
Rita: I think I'd be more comfortable there, though. This is, like, high pressure now. Oh,
Shubh: do you feel like you're, there's a lot of pressure because-
Rita: You gotta perform.
Shubh: Oh. Um, okay. Well now I'm feeling a lot of pressure. So we just decided that this would be season two 'cause we took a four-week hiatus.
Philippe, you were back home in Minnetob- Manitoba. Minnetoba? Manitoba. Yeah. Chilling out on the lake.
Philippe: Technically Ontario, but very close to Manitoba.
Shubh: Okay. Well, I don't n- I don't know that we needed to- Like, I think a lot of people were like, "Well, actually Philippe was, like, 800 meters into..." Okay. You were in Manitoba.
It was great?
Philippe: Yeah, it was so lovely. It was awesome.
Shubh: And then you came back to work?
Philippe: Yeah. And that's been less great, but-
Shubh: Right. Um, you also- Not because
Philippe: of anything going on. It's all been going
Shubh: well ... we're gonna get to Rita in a second [00:04:00] here. No,
Rita: take your time.
Shubh: Um, Rita knows this. I came to your new office warming party last Friday.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: And it was a delightful time.
Philippe: You liked it?
Shubh: I had a great time.
Philippe: That's awesome. But you didn't stay for karaoke, though. We had karaoke after everyone left.
Shubh: You did say there was gonna be karaoke, and I wasn't sure if there was gonna be. Now I wish I had stayed.
Philippe: It was pretty
Rita: late.
Philippe: That
Rita: is Shubh's, like-
dream-
Shubh: Yeah. Oh ...
Rita: is when there's karaoke- Yeah ... he will be the first one up there.
Philippe: I- It was awesome.
Shubh: Now, hmm.
Philippe: Are, would you- Did you see Angelica rapped this, like, Colombian rap? What? And, like, nailed it, the whole thing. It was incredible. I sang Hero by Enrique Iglesias. And I, I did that- Is there video? I, I think so.
I did that move where, you know, in High School Musical, they, like, stand on the seat of the chair and then put their foot on the back of the chair? Yeah, the Backstreet
Shubh: Boys move.
Philippe: And then, and then kinda tilt the chair. Mm-hmm. I did that live- Successfully? ... in performance. Successfully. Is there
Shubh: video of any of this?
Philippe: I, I th- saw, saw some phones up, so, uh, no one's sent it to me yet, though, but,
Shubh: [00:05:00] uh-
Rita: We're, we're gonna need those. We are gonna need those,
Shubh: Rita. Uh, well, so you, um, you also said, so we're recording at this new studio. Rita, uh, after much lobbying, has agreed to come on the podcast. Philippe, I sent you the link to the address of the studio, and you said, "Hey, that's great.
I have a date next door right after."
Philippe: Yeah. That's right.
Rita: What's next door?
Shubh: Yeah, that's right. Her
Philippe: place.
Shubh: Oh. Oh.
Philippe: Oh.
Shubh: Oh, yeah. Oh.
Rita: Yeah. So she's cooking. Yeah,
Philippe: she's cooking. In a manner of speaking. Uh, she's ve- she's veg, so she's making a little tofu dish. I don't know. I was there last week cooking for her, and, uh, uh, w- we made- Did you make
Shubh: vegetarian food?
Philippe: I did, yeah. What did you make? Um, brown buttered sage pasta.
Shubh: Oh, wow. Rita and I just call it butter sage pasta.
Philippe: Butter sage pasta. '
Shubh: Cause we're brown.
Philippe: You
Shubh: didn't get that at first. I just wanna [00:06:00] make sure. But
Rita: you went to her place to cook.
Shubh: Yes. Um- What's wrong with your kitchen?
Rita: Yeah.
Philippe: She doesn't have a car.
Rita: And you have no food.
Shubh: Ah.
Philippe: I brought the food. That does make sense now. Yeah.
Rita: This tracks.
Shubh: So she's got no car, so you cooked. She's making vegetarian food today.
Philippe: Yeah, but it's not really a date as, as much as... But hold on. Let me walk through this here, Rita. Yeah, okay. We're ready. Rita, I could probably use your advice. Yeah. Actually, you know what?
Because this is season two-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Philippe: can this be a segment?
Shubh: Yeah, sure.
Philippe: I, I really need- What's the segment gonna be called? ... need your mouth trumpet. It's Phil's Dating Life or something like that. Yeah,
Shubh: yeah. Uh, Phil's Dating Life, and the mouth trumpet music will be like, «trumpet sound.» Yeah, something like that.
Yeah.
Philippe: That's nice.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: But you gotta go, "Welcome-" No, but that's Careless
Rita: Whisper.
Shubh: Oh, yeah. Oh, I can't use that. That's... I didn't use the full eight seconds. If you hadn't a said anything, Rita, we'd have been fine. Yeah. Uh, what's a, what's a very similar, uh, «trumpet sound» something [00:07:00] like that
Philippe: Phil's dating life.
Welcome to
Shubh: Philippe's dating life update. Or not dating life update, depending on is it a date or is it not a date?
Philippe: Yeah. Liz, you be the judge.
Shubh: Okay, go.
Philippe: Read it. Okay. So-
Shubh: Wait, Rita should do this, come on for this segment every time
Philippe: I would love that.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: I could- Oh, yes ... it feels like I'm talking to my therapist.
Definitely. Ben
Rita: absolutely loves,
Philippe: yeah. Okay, so here's the deal. I mentioned this off podcast already, but, um, just for the audience, I'll, I'll give the whole context. So-
Shubh: You don't need to give the whole context,
Rita: Philippe. No, no, we want it. Go.
Philippe: So I used to lead a run club here in Calgary.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: And, um-
Shubh: Every one of Philippe's stories, uh, start with how he used to, uh, run something.
Philippe: And, uh, and one day, uh, here's this, you know, gorgeous Australian gal, and, um, she comes up to me after the run club and goes, "Hey, like, I just moved here." I go, "Oh my God, you moved here for the run club?" She was like, "Yes." So I introduced her to, like, a bunch of people who [00:08:00] were there. She made a ton of friends, and she still hangs out with those people to this day, you know?
Shubh: But it was, it was a problem, 'cause you guys ran in one direction for the run club, and she ran in the other direction.
Philippe: Yeah, yeah, that's right. Australian. Yeah. Yeah. Hilarious. Um, and, um, so, so that happened. We, we, like... You know, she, she would be around. We would be friends. One day, uh, last year, last April, I'm hanging out in the sauna because my friend started a, a, a sauna cold plunge studio.
Mm. She's in there, and I'm going, "Hey, I'm going back to Winnipeg for, um, the, the, for my friend's 30th birthday." She goes, "Oh, I've never been." I go, "Oh, you should come." And she goes, "Okay, sure." So she just came with me like two weeks later to Winnipeg, and I showed her the best time. Like, she, like, loved Winnipeg.
And, um, but I was never really interested, to be honest, and I was kind of also like- We'll
Shubh: cut that part
Philippe: out ... I was also kinda like, um- it kind of we- like she w- like, you know, there were points where, uh, there was [00:09:00] maybe something s- some, you know, uh, some- something happening. And I was kind of like- Don't ask any follow-up.
Shubh: No. No. Don't... Honey, don't ask any follow-up. But I need some clarification. No, you
Chaz: don't.
Philippe: You don't
Shubh: really.
Philippe: Like, I had- Like, look, let's not help him dig it, you know? Like, we were out one night, I come back, we were sleeping in separate bedrooms. It's 3:00 AM. I got a massage gun. I'm, like, massaging my legs and, uh, she comes into my room and starts doing it for me, and I was kinda like, "You're not gonna come to my childhood home and make a move on me.
Like, you know, that's not gonna happen." Yeah. You
Rita: know? So wait, your parents are there?
Philippe: No, they weren't there. My parents were out of town or something. Yeah. But like, I took her to a, a playoff game, a Winnipeg playoff game, so Winnipeg Whiteout- Mm ... or as we call it, an out. Nice.
Shubh: Okay, so-
Philippe: Well
Shubh: played.
Philippe: Well played 'Cause we- 'cause we're white.
This
Shubh: is all the background. You got together for dinner a, a couple of weeks ago, and you were wondering- And then she comes with you to Winnipeg Hold on. Yeah,
Philippe: yeah. Now there's more? And
Rita: the massage.
Shubh: She, she massages my legs. And, but there's more background. I know when I, when [00:10:00] I hear vibrating from the bedroom next door.
You think something nefarious, but not in this case. Actually, when you are, when you're my age, it's almost definitely a massage gun.
Rita: Well, that's actually a bold move 'cause she didn't know what you were doing in there. This
Shubh: is a totally different podcast now. Rita and Philip are
Philippe: gonna host the dating podcast.
But, but then, uh, actually just, like, um, um, three weeks ago while I was at my lake, she at, at some point ki- kind of, like, asked, invited herself to my cabin. So I said, "No problem. You can come." So she came for a weekend. Again, had the best time, but then my parents were there and they loved her. Like, it... And everyone there was like, "This girl's amazing," whatever, you know, kind of like, what are you doing?
So then I go... So I'm still not, like, necessarily thinking about it too much. I go for dinner, uh, over there. I cook her brown butter sage pasta. Um, and so I suppose now I'm go- in my head I'm going, "Well, maybe there is some... " And, and maybe I kinda a- I inquire tonight, "What are you... " And [00:11:00] that's it. We're
Rita: officially- Okay.
So first I have a question. Are you interested?
Philippe: Oh, my God. Now I think I
Rita: am.
Philippe: That is the
Rita: right question. You think you are. Yeah. Okay. So yes, I do think then the conversation should happen tonight. Does she listen
Shubh: to this podcast?
Philippe: Well, I did say to this podcast that she said she would listen
Shubh: to it. Oh my God.
All right. Well, this is, uh, this is a part, this is another segment where I call Shubh either saves Philip's career- ... or saves his dating life. Um, Chaz, uh, what do you think? This is, uh, w- do you think this is a date?
Chaz: I think, are, i- is there gonna be video for this one? Because judging by Philippe's reaction there, he got pretty giddy.
Yeah.
Rita: And I think- There's some
Chaz: giggles ... this is a lot more serious than he's leading on.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah. That's a great call. Body language does tell the story. Rita, do you think it's a date?
Rita: Well, w- what's interesting is you guys actually started at the dating stage, where she's going on these trips with you.
Shubh: Yeah. Right.
Rita: Right? And so now it's kinda like you're [00:12:00] now kinda going back to what the initial dating stage should be, and you can have this conversation, but I do think it is.
Shubh: W- Oh. It's kinda like you're dating counterclockwise.
Rita: Yeah. Like, you're from Australia.
Shubh: Which is how they date in Australia. Um-
Rita: So it's, it's interesting.
Like-
Shubh: I think it... I mean, it's a... I think it's, it sounds like a date to me.
Rita: I think it is.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Especially two weeks in a row, right?
Rita: Mm-hmm.
Shubh: You know how you said it's very
Rita: something- But I feel like you're confused in terms of where you guys are at still.
Philippe: I'm confused.
Rita: Yes. Exactly. Yes.
Shubh: Oh, I don't think you need to feel like he's confused.
He's definitely confused.
Rita: But I feel like she is all in. Yeah.
Shubh: You think she's all in?
Rita: Well, if she's walking into your bedroom at 3:00 a.m. She's right here. She's coming out th-
Shubh: Matt can't set up a fourth mic. Otherwise, she'd be here. She lives so close that it's possible she can hear this.
Rita: Well, let's call her.
Let's call her. Let's just change the whole direction of today's episode.
Shubh: Yeah. Um, you know how you said something very clever and charming when, uh, she came out to the run club?
Philippe: Yep.
Shubh: Uh, when Rita and I met [00:13:00] in high school, first day of high school, 'cause we are, we had met once before, uh, a little, couple times before.
Our families had met before.
Rita: Yeah, when we were-
Shubh: So- ...
Rita: actually quite young. Our families were friends.
Shubh: So when I saw her- Yeah.
Rita: Brothers ... we w- they were at potluck parties, and there's actually photos, uh, that my parents have of Shubh and I sitting in our living room. Yeah. And we're, like, what? Grade six? Maybe
Shubh: six
Rita: or seven years old.
Yeah. And we're literally sitting side by side eating cake.
Philippe: No way.
Shubh: Yeah. So, so then I see her- But
Rita: we never, like, talked to each other.
Shubh: I see, I see her on the first day of high school. And she goes, uh, very nicely and kindly comes up to me and is like, "Oh, hey, Shubh. I didn't know you were going here," 'cause we were lining up to register.
And I said, and this is just as charming as your thing. I was like, "Uh, no. I'm just lining up to register for no reason."
Rita: Oh, yeah.
Shubh: So-
Rita: Instant turn-off. I was like- Yeah ... "I do not like you," and I walked away.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah. So-
Philippe: That's, like, just such horrible high school sarcasm.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. I thought I was being funny and charming.
Yeah, you thought
Rita: you were being charming and funny. In
Shubh: my defense, I was a massive nerd, and girls never talked to me. So, [00:14:00] uh, but, uh, you know, man, it only took me almost three years, but then we went on a date. Wow. Yeah.
Rita: Mm-hmm.
Shubh: Uh, our first date
Rita: was- Did we know that we started dating in high school?
Philippe: I did know
Rita: that.
Philippe: Yeah. Yeah. High
Shubh: school, high school graduation.
Rita: Yeah.
Philippe: W- what, won You over to him
Shubh: Oh yeah, great question. Let's hear about this.
Rita: I don't even know. I don't even know. Probably just- Hmm,
Shubh: that's not
Rita: the answer
Shubh: I
Rita: want ... the his constant begging.
No, it actually was probably, Shubh probably doesn't even remember this. What? It was a grade 12 high school dance, and friends of mine had actually brought, um, people who didn't come to our school, and they were older, and they brought a couple of guys to the dance who got tickets. And so we were actually in the gym, and one of them was, you know, making me a little uncomfortable and being- Okay
maybe a little bit too close. And so I left, and I went out, and I was, like, sitting on the stairs. [00:15:00] And Shubh actually saw me, and he came and he spent the rest of the dance just hanging out with me.
Shubh: No way.
Rita: Yeah. And it was just honestly-
Shubh: Well, that is nice ...
Rita: yeah, no. It, 'cause I was-
Shubh: And then I killed the guy.
Yeah.
Rita: Well, it was funny because then the next day I was telling him how I had a spare the next morning, and I was like, "You know, I gotta still be here because I get a ride from my dad." And so he still would drop me off early in the morning. So I'm like, "What am I gonna do during my spare?" And Shubh's like, "Oh yeah, that sucks.
I have one too, but I'm just gonna take the bus later." But the next day he actually showed up-
Philippe: No way ...
Rita: first thing. I actually don't remember that at all And then we spent that entire spare period together as well. That's so cute. So that's probably when, yeah, that's probably when I started noticing-
Shubh: So the lesson-
him a
Rita: little more ...
Shubh: kids out there is if you, uh, want to, uh, get with somebody who's way better than you in every way, just always be around.
Rita: Yeah.
Philippe: Just memorize their schedule.
Shubh: Yeah, just memorize their schedule and be present. And not, I don't [00:16:00] mean just emotionally present, I mean be physically where they are all the time.
I think that sounds a little creepy- Yeah, I think there's- ... in retrospect It seems very stalker-ish ... but in the late '90s we didn't quite, you know.
Philippe: Yes, stalking was chill back then. Yeah. Yeah. It, it was
Rita: more difficult to do.
Philippe: Yeah.
Rita: You really had to work
Philippe: at it. People didn't have phones. Yeah. Like, I really, you had to know their schedule.
Um- How do you think I should broach the topic tonight? Oh, is it a date? No.
Rita: No, no. The are they going to become a couple.
Shubh: Oh.
Philippe: Oh, no. Whoa.
Shubh: Whoa, hold on a sec- Oh, no, wait, what? I don't, I don't think they're going steady here, Risa.
Philippe: Yeah. What is- It's like an episode of Boy Meets
Shubh: World.
Rita: What is this? What is this conversation you wanna have?
Philippe: Oh, yeah. Oh, no, that's a good que- yeah. I was gonna be like, "Hey, like-" "What are we?" No, like- "What is this?" ... do you, is there anything romantic going on here?
Shubh: Yeah. Something
Philippe: like that. Um, I mean, I wouldn't say
Shubh: it like that. That'd be my first
Philippe: take. No, well, I'm glad that we're practicing now- Yeah ... 'cause I just realized how unprepared I was for that conversation.
Uh. Sh- [00:17:00] Shaz, what do you think?
Chaz: Yeah Uh, I don't know. I think you're gonna have to figure out what you want.
Philippe: Oh, come on.
Shubh: You s- Oh, Jesus.
Rita: I think, I think Shubh and I just really showed our age here, that it was like, "You're gonna have the conversation- Yeah,
Shubh: yeah ... on
Rita: if you're going steady."
Shubh: So would you get married then?
Like, if you tell her that you like her, you get married I guess. Yeah. Do you
Rita: like me or do you like, like me?
Shubh: Yeah, that's great. Right. Oh, give her one of those... That's a great idea. Yeah. Give her a little note- Write it on a note ... with check boxes. "Are we friends? Do you like me? Do you like, like me?" That's a great idea, Rita.
That's a good idea. That's an app idea.
Philippe: Yeah. I could vibe code it probably.
Shubh: You could definitely vibe code it.
Philippe: Before I even hear
Shubh: that. Here's, here's what you could do. And I'm not, I never advocate for, um, um- you know, not complete and total honesty in a relationship, but you could just be like, "Hey, I was talking to a friend of mine, and he's not sure if-
you know- Classic ... he, they're dating." Like, he went over and made her [00:18:00] dinner twice. Uh, but you have to change it just a little bit, like three times. Right. Um-
Rita: How, how did your last- ... encounter end? We
Shubh: will get to our podcast at some
Rita: point. Yeah. Like-
Shubh: This is still da,
Rita: da, da, da ... was it, like these, these dinners that you guys are having, are they pre-planned, or are they on the day- Oh
where it's like, "Hey, why don't you come over?" Rita's
Shubh: so good at asking
Philippe: questions. Yeah. It, that one was a day of, 'cause I'd just gotten back from the lake. It was a
Rita: day
Philippe: of. Yeah. And I was like-
Shubh: Yeah, day of, just like-
Philippe: She was, and she invited me, and she said, "Would you like to come
Rita: over?" So then this is your opportunity to make the next date-
Shubh: Okay, hold on
Rita: to date.
Shubh: Yeah. But
Rita: can I- Being like, "Hey, when are we doing this again?" Can I just get a- I'd like to-
Philippe: Oh.
Shubh: Can I get a clarification? You had just come out from three or four weeks away, and she texts you and said, "Hey, do you wanna come over for dinner?"
Philippe: I think I texted her like, "What am I doing back? This is crazy."
Yeah. And she was like, "Come over for dinner."
Rita: Mm.
Philippe: And then the date, or the, the, the, the encounter ended with us, like, just kinda [00:19:00] laying on the couch side by side, not watching anything, just chatting for, like, 30 or 45 minutes.
Rita: Oh, my gosh. Wow. What? This is not a friend thing.
Yeah. Uh- Hey, man, it is- ... I think it's pretty obvious- Yeah ... where this is going. Why is this even a question? No, I think the
Shubh: jury's still out. Is it a date? You know, whenever I'm hanging out with my buddies, like, one of them will be like, "Hey, Shubh, uh, you wanna come hang out?" And then him and I, we lie down together next to each other.
You know, we're watching, we're watching like, uh- Oh ... we're watching football. And then it's like, "You know, it would be better if it was just quiet," and we just lied next to each other.
Rita: Oh, Phil.
Shubh: Yeah. Phil,
Rita: Phil, Phil, Phil.
Philippe: But I was doing, I was, you know, I was doing some nuzzling. You know, kind of like seeing if I would get some reciprocating physical touch.
Yeah. If I, if I may. Yeah. And? And there was none.
Shubh: Oh.
Rita: What does this mean? So she just like- Oh. '
Philippe: Cause, you know, it, so that's like another interesting data- What'd you do, put a pillow
Rita: between you?
Philippe: No, there's no pillow, but, like, I was kind of like, so maybe she put her-
Rita: Is this a spooning [00:20:00] lie down?
Philippe: No, no, no. No,
Shubh: they're shoulder to shoulder.
Philippe: In fact- That's a- ... in fact, we're actually not shoulder to shoulder. I'm like, I'm like shoulder to, to hip. 'Cause I'm kinda, 'cause it's a big couch How
Rita: long does this couch-
Philippe: Big ass couch It's a big ass couch. And so that's what, what I mean when I was doing some- This
Rita: couch sounds amazing.
Philippe: Yeah. Just so everybody- Oh, it is remarkable
yeah, yeah. I'll send you a photo maybe. A- it's hu- a huge sectional. And, um, that's w- when I'm saying I'm doing some nuzzling, I, my like head is kind of nuzzling into her ribs- Okay, don't do that ... thinking I'm gonna get a little, thinking I'm gonna get a- Don't touch me ... a, a little head pat. Yeah. Maybe.
Shubh: No head pats.
Like a dog. You were hoping she would treat you like a girl would treat you.
Philippe: Is that too much to ask? Well,
Shubh: I'm looking forward- Get a little rub behind the ears ... to getting some clarity here. I- Maybe, uh, maybe today instead of putting your, uh, shoulder by her hip, you just, you s- you shift up a little bit, so you're actually- Right
you make eye contact.
Philippe: Oh.
Shubh: Maybe she was like, uh, maybe you were trying to nuzzle in, she was like, "What the fuck?" What is this feeling? What is this, a dog? Yeah. [00:21:00] Uh, so, uh, what-
Rita: Or like, I mean, you guys have done two trips together. This is now dinner number two. So you could even, I think at this stage, go in for maybe a little peck.
Philippe: Oh. Oh,
Rita: my god. And see if that is reciprocated. I w- And if it's not, then just leave.
Shubh: Yeah, that's good. Then just run out. Maybe just- Just run out ... just grab your stomach and say, "I have diarrhea from all the vegetarian food." These vegetables have too much fiber. I got diarrhea bad. I gotta go.
Philippe: Yeah, yeah.
Shubh: Okay.
Philippe: That's true. Uh- Oh, this, this tofu is making me wanna kiss you.
Rita: No, don't do that.
Shubh: Yeah, that'd be weird, wouldn't it? Uh, okay, we covered that?
Philippe: Yeah, that's good. Well- Thank you
Rita: guys ... I am looking forward to the next time I see you and I get an update on
Philippe: this. Yeah. Yeah, there, yeah.
Shubh: Hi, everybody. It's Shubh here. Are you a startup founder or a scale-up exec that's trying to take your company to the next level? Are you looking for the right people to [00:22:00] help you do it? Are you looking for people who will help you set culture, who have deep domain expertise, who can figure anything out, who are Swiss Army Knives and unicorns?
How are you finding those people? Are you juggling multiple job boards? Are you screening hundreds of resumes, doing dozens of interviews? Is it working? I bet it's not. Are you frustrated? I bet you are. Do you know how I know that? Because once upon a time, I was you. Then I discovered the New Network.
Jennifer Wiens and her team at the New Network help Canadian tech companies build and scale high-performance teams through a proven unique approach to recruitment and executive search. Also, they're awesome. I used them to help build most of my team at ZayZoon, and I would use them again, and I've recommended them to everyone that I know.
Check out newnetwork.ca for more details. The New Network: I couldn't have done it without them.
Wait, I get, uh, two quick updates, then we're gonna get to the actual program.
Philippe: Is this a new segment?
Shubh: Uh, yeah, that segment's [00:23:00] over.
Philippe: What's the new segment?
Shubh: The, this isn't a new segment. This is just me, it's my show. This is my show. Yeah, yeah. This is my entire program.
Rita: No, but I would like to come back to this.
Shubh: What, to the Phil dating thing?
Rita: Yeah.
Shubh: Well, no,
Rita: I mean- I think the audience at home would also
Shubh: like updates
well, we'll come back to it after he goes on the date. Yes, yes. Yeah, yeah. Yes, yes. Maybe he'll text us and I can update you. Um, getting a little bit of time for feedback- He'll come back on, don't worry ...
Rita: from
Philippe: you two again. I was like, what do you mean? Uh, no, actually Rita's invited to the next one. I can-
Shubh: I actually do think you and Rita- Oh
would have a great podcast where Phil comes on and asks Rita what's going on
Philippe: Or she asks me what's going on Yeah,
Shubh: yeah. Yeah. No, but you ask her for dating advice.
Philippe: Oh, yeah, yeah.
Shubh: I think that's a great idea.
Philippe: Let's go with what's going on
Rita: in the- Oh my God, we should, and we should have listeners phone in. Can we do a live one?
You
Shubh: guys- Yeah ... would both be incredible at doing an advice show.
Rita: Oh, Phil. Brother,
Philippe: brother, brother.
Rita: Jump this guy. Yeah. Let's go. Come on. Let's start our own
Shubh: thing. Okay, I don't love, I don't love this. Um, two quick updates from our house. Uh, my... [00:24:00] You know how you're always, Phil, like, "Oh, there's 100,000 less entrepreneurs in Canada?"
Philippe: Yes.
Shubh: Uh, my 14-year-old, or our, my, our 14-year-old daughter started a press-on nails, custom press-on nails business.
Philippe: No
Shubh: way. Yeah. Built a website- It's amazing ... in Lovable. Uh, she's got a bunch of customers. Uh- Does she really? Yep. My running joke has been she's got more revenue than most of the publicly funded accelerator- Okay
companies in this country. Sick burn. Um, our middle daughter just launched her Lovable site today. Yes. Uh, making crochet animals, um, is now completely overwhelmed because she got five orders, and is like, she... You know how you- That
Philippe: does seem
Shubh: like a lot ... you had the work face when you showed up today 'cause you had some work stuff to deal with?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: And Rita, do you remember a couple months ago and I was like, uh Shy and I started this thing. Now we actually have work to do and we have to deliver. And you're like, "What are you complaining about?" My, uh, our 12-year-old daughter had that face today. She was like, "Oh," like the euphoria of getting the first few orders was followed immediately by, "Oh, I gotta fucking crochet a [00:25:00] lot now."
Well,
Rita: I think she's excited about it. I think she's stressed because her-
Shubh: She,
Rita: she wants to deliver ... components have not arrived yet, and she can't start until they do. Oh, she's got- And they're arriving later today.
Philippe: She's got supply chain
Rita: issues. She, yeah. And so she was literally opening the front door about every 45 minutes to see- Yeah
if it had been delivered- She's got- ... 'cause she wants to get started ... plastic
Shubh: eyes. You know what, uh, Lucas ordered from her?
Philippe: What? Lucas, here?
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Lucas was one of the first orders she got, and he ordered, she does these, uh, big crochet geese, and he ordered a goose.
Philippe: No way. Wait, how did I miss this order?
Shubh: It's, uh, on LinkedIn. Maybe you're not- You- Are you, if you're not following me on LinkedIn, I don't know.
Philippe: I do follow you on LinkedIn, but.
Shubh: So yeah. So now we have two, two entrepreneurs in the house.
Philippe: That's so fun.
Shubh: Uh,
two successful ones. Yeah, it's pretty awesome. It's great. And me. Oh, my youngest daughter and I are working on something though, but we can't talk about it yet.
Rita: It's very hush-hush.
Philippe: That's so exciting. Very hush-hush. What an entrepreneurial family. Are you doing some weird stuff though that's like, "You're gonna start a company"?
Shubh: Uh, I would love to have [00:26:00] been that guy, but I was not that guy growing up. I never did anything like that. The kids actually... So Asha, our oldest, came home from hanging out with her friend, 'cause she'd been doing her nails. And I did do the classic, like I came down the stairs one time and I was like, "You can't just do nails all summer."
Um, but then she, she was out with a friend of hers. She came back, she's like, "Hey, we, my friend and I started a press-on nails business. We've got our first two orders."
Philippe: No way
Shubh: So they, this was all them. I did, uh, get them into Lovable though, so they built their own websites on Lovable.
Philippe: Wow. That's amazing.
Rita: I know.
And the name, the name is- Oh,
Shubh: yeah ...
Rita: I think killer.
Shubh: What is it? The nail one is First ImPressons, like in First ImPressons, First ImPressons. Okay. Like First Impression. 'Cause they press on nails.
Yeah. And then, uh, our middle daughter, Arya, it's a, it's a, a crochet store, and it's Ari Yarniverse. So it's her first name- ... and Yarniverse. It's pretty sick. Two puns. Where do they get their pun-naming skills from? Yeah,
Philippe: [00:27:00] really. When are they gonna come on the show?
Shubh: They would love to come on the show.
Rita: Yeah.
They very much
Shubh: would. They... Oh, oh, my youngest, our 10-year-old, you know what she said to me coming out the door 'cause she knew mom was coming on the pod today? She looks at me very earnestly, gives me a big hug, and says, "Dad, this is the one episode I might actually listen to because Mom's coming on."
Philippe: Wow.
Shubh: Which I th- I thought was a nice thing for her to say but-
Philippe: You just doubled their listenership. ...
Shubh: also very hurt. Also very hurtful. I do what I can. Everyone in the house is gonna watch. Uh, watch?
Philippe: Yeah, she'll be tuning.
Shubh: I guess they can watch. Yeah. Matt, Matt got all the shit set up for us. Uh, okay. Should we get to the actual program?
That's-
Philippe: Yeah, let's do it
Shubh: Okay, so we have caught up on Phil's dating life. We, we are 40 minutes in. 30... No. Oh,
Rita: shoot.
Shubh: 35 minutes in. Pretty, pretty deep in, yeah, Matt? Yeah? Pretty deep in. Um, uh, we've caught up on Phil's dating life. Brief, some brief updates, um, but that is not the purpose of this podcast. We-
Philippe: We've hardly introduced your wife, actually
Shubh: We've [00:28:00] hardly introduced my wife.
The problem is I know her very well. Do you wanna, um, do you wanna ask her some questions before she gets into her pitch?
Philippe: Yeah, I would love to. If, if that's okay?
Rita: No, it's totally... Go, I'm ready.
Shubh: Ladies and gentlemen, we got a new sponsor Center 9 the number nine.com. So Center the number nine.com but not written center the number nine. Center- Center l- Nine. Nine. Yeah. But not N-I-N-E. That's a better way to describe it. Center9.com, not N-I-N-E. That's not a better way. That's not a better way. No, that's a much more confusing way to describe it.
Do, uh, think they're immediately regretting sponsoring this podcast? Yeah, that's right. My friends Riz Kassam and Clint Phillips, they run a Microsoft consulting shop. They are two former technical consultants who got tired of watching enterprises and companies overpay for bad Microsoft 365 work and built their own consultancy.
I've worked with a number of clients over the last six months. It's remarkable the number of [00:29:00] early-stage companies that use Microsoft and use Teams, and it takes them days, weeks to get stuff set up for us. So you know what? Uh, call Clint, call Riz, call Center 9. They can do, uh, Microsoft 365 security, Identity, Copilot adoption, uh, AI compliance, M&A migrations.
They're a small team, deep expertise, no fluff. Wow. Did you like how I said, "No fluff"? Yeah. That's great. So, uh, if your organization is navigating any of these things, reach out to them on LinkedIn. Uh, go to their website. Uh, you know what? You can, you can DM me. I'll put you in touch with them. Center 9- Yeah
.com. I've known Riz for a long time. I see him at the gym all the time. He's in good shape, too. Is he? Yeah, he's in good shape. Takes care of himself. So you know if somebody takes care of himself that way- Uh-huh ... he's gonna take care of your Microsoft 365 needs. Boom. Boom. Reach out to them on LinkedIn. Uh, reach out to me.
I'll connect you with them. Go to their website, Center [00:30:00] 9, not N-I-N-E .com Center, the number nine. So it's centernine, not N-I-N-E .com. Center9.com. And, uh, we're gonna put that in the show notes. They're good guys. They're gonna do a good job
Philippe: What's your, uh, deepest insecurity?
Shubh: Oh, boy.
Rita: Oh, boy. Indeed. We are starting- I'm- ... just really in the weeds here. I'm
Philippe: joking.
We don't have to ask that. Eh. Um, what, uh, but, uh, uh, you are a dentist.
Rita: I am. I have been for 20 years now.
Philippe: Wow.
Rita: Yeah. It's been a long time.
Philippe: And, and do you like it?
Rita: I do.
Philippe: Okay.
Rita: I do. Dentistry, for me, is arts and crafts. It's like arts and crafts with a science background. And so- Wow ... I find it... 'Cause like- Yeah, you get the creative side, but you also get the scientific aspect to it as well.
And-
Philippe: Is that 'cause you're putting in a bunch of, like, [00:31:00] gold teeth?
Rita: You can do gold. But it's, uh... No, I do, I do enjoy it.
Philippe: Okay. That's awesome. I just went to the dentist last week.
Rita: And how'd it go?
Philippe: No cavities.
Rita: Hey, congratulations.
Philippe: There you
Chaz: go. Did
Rita: they say that- Nice oral hygiene ...
Philippe: or did you just leave? Yeah, I just walked out.
Yeah. No, actually, the, the, the time I went before I had not been flossing, and they gave me a really hard time. They were like, "This is bad."
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: And they were like, "Really just try and start flossing once a week." And I left, I was like, "I'm gonna floss every single day and show these guys that I'm capable."
Shubh: And did you?
Philippe: And I did. And- And so I went back, and they were very impressed.
Shubh: Yeah. And you feel
Philippe: better. Amazing. And I feel better.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Less risk of...
Shubh: Everything.
Rita: Yeah,
Philippe: decay. Alzheimer's.
Rita: Oh, yep.
Shubh: There's lots of- Less, less risk of, uh, it not being called a date tonight.
Philippe: That's right, me and my pearly whites.
Shubh: Uh, people, when they find out Rita, uh, is a dentist will always say to me, and they'll complain that they have to floss.[00:32:00]
They're like, "Why do dentists always want you to floss?"
Rita: I... Yeah, I remember one person said, "Why would I floss?" Because all the stuff goes on my mirror when they're flossing.
Shubh: Yeah.
Rita: And then I was like, "But then you're leaving that in between your teeth."
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah.
Rita: So-
Shubh: I told them it's kinda like asking your proctologist why you have to wipe your butt Yeah, that's pretty good That usually stops the conversation.
And then, 'cause then they don't wanna say, "Oh, I don't wipe my butt."
Philippe: Do you, do you have some dentist tips for the average- ... uh, teeth and care of? Brush your teeth last. Okay.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Good.
Shubh: Good. You, you have questions but you're not allowed to ask she can't answer, because y- many people thinks a small percentage or a large percentage of dentists are sometimes, uh, uh, telling them they need to do stuff they don't think they need to do.
Right.
Philippe: Uh-
Shubh: It's like the mechanic. So, like, we, we get this question a lot, so I have to, I always intercept it, 'cause people are like... Sometimes Rita will be like, dentists will [00:33:00] be like, "Oh, yeah, dentists, they just get you to, you know,
Philippe: do whatever you want with
Shubh: your teeth." It's not true, people. I just need everybody out there to know for my wife, who's very good at her job, it's not true.
There's probably a bunch
Rita: of other sketchy dentists. I think every profession, every profession has their- Yeah ... bad apples. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. Right?
Rita: And their
Shubh: names
Rita: are. And so, yeah. Can
Philippe: I, can I ask you for a, a second opinion?
Rita: Yes.
Philippe: So I just got diagnosed recently, this is a little bit serious, with mild sleep apnea.
Rita: Hmm. Okay.
Philippe: And so because I decided I'm gonna be the first person in my fam- ... first man in my family to not snore. Mm-hmm. So I said... I went to my doctor, I said- ... "We're gonna figure this out together, right?" He said, "Okay, first thing we gotta do is-
Rita: A sleep study ...
Philippe: a sleep study, make sure you don't have sleep apnea."
Mm-hmm. And I went into it like a joke, thinking, like, "No way I got this shit. I have this shit." And so, um, [00:34:00] I went back to my doctor, and he was like, "Yeah, well, um, honestly, it's so mild that you don't need an apparatus. So we're gonna s- try some steroid na- nasal cream." I was like, "I'm going to the dentist.
Should I ta- should I ask him?" So I went to the dentist, and he suggested two things. One was, like, this French apparatus that can pull my bottom jaw forward.
Rita: Yeah, it's a snore appliance.
Philippe: Yes. Mm-hmm. A snore appliance. Mm-hmm. And then in the morning I gotta wear, like, a refitter that, like, moves my jaw back. Or I can get braces to br- to bring my front teeth up further into my gu- my jaw, my, my gums, so that my...
I don't have as much of an overbite.
Chaz: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Philippe: These two things. What do you think about those two?
Rita: This is... I think we should talk after.
Shubh: Perfect. I, uh, also like that you set this up by- My thoughts, yeah ... by saying, "Hey, Shubh, we haven't even asked your wife about anything," and you asked her one question.
No, she said that to me. And then immediately it was like, "Uh, hey, let me turn this into a long-winded story about myself-
Rita: I- it's not a- ... and how you can help me ... it's not a [00:35:00] quick answer, which is why I'm saying let's talk after.
Shubh: Okay.
Rita: Yeah, yeah.
Shubh: Um, okay, fine.
Philippe: Um, what- Do you think that Shubh is a good father?
Shubh: Oh, boy.
Rita: The best.
Philippe: The best.
Shubh: That's not true.
Rita: No, it's true. That's very kind of you to say. No, no. It's true.
Philippe: And what do you think about this podcast?
Rita: So I actually am a huge fan. Wow. I was very excited when Shubh- How many podcasts- ... told me that he was doing this. I have listened to 20, but I got derailed, which is why-
Shubh: No, no, no, but I mean, how many podcasts before this one did you ever listen to?
Rita: Oh, zero.
Shubh: Yeah.
Rita: Wow. This was the-
Shubh: She, and then she listened and actually chose to listen, listen.
Rita: Wow. Yeah. No, I'm enjoying it, and it's honestly, I'm, I, I think it's fantastic. And, like, Shubh's dream job is to be a sports broadcaster. Yeah. So I'm like, "This is the next best, best thing." I thought you
Philippe: wanted to be Conan O'Brien.
Shubh: Yeah. I would love to be Conan too, but he... Yeah. I would like to be both. I would like to be a funny... I would like to just be funny and talk about stuff, and sports being one of those things. Well, uh, [00:36:00] who, who... You should be Harry Carey. "Louisville Slugger country." Um, that was very kind of you to say, Rita.
Rita: No, he's- You wanna ask her some other layup questions?
The, the bits, the bits in our house are endless, but they are... It's, it's a riot. Like, you should- I gotta work on my patience ... you, you should do- I'm working on it ... you should do some of them, though.
Shubh: I've gotten more patient with the kids. I'm working on it. Do
Philippe: you think he's a good soccer coach?
Rita: I do.
Philippe: Really?
Rita: Yeah.
Shubh: This is great.
Rita: No.
Shubh: That's a lie.
Rita: Can
Shubh: you keep asking her- He is. Can you keep asking her layup questions?
Rita: I will tell you one thing Shubh is not good at.
Shubh: Oh, yeah, okay. Wow, I don't love this.
Rita: No, so Shubh, Shubh thinks he has an inside voice, and he thinks when he is saying things, they are coming out quietly where only I can hear him.
Yeah. And they are not. Like, everyone around him can hear, everyone around us can hear what he is saying. And let me give you, let me give you an example. Oh, boy. So we, this has not changed. So we were, we were in undergrad. We both went to the University of [00:37:00] Alberta, and we had spent the evening- Oh, God ... at the library.
We're studying. It's late, and so we, it's time to go home. So we're leaving, but I really wanted a Puff Wheat Square. So there was this area where they had all these vending machines, and there was one vending machine that had Puff Wheat Squares available. So we're waiting behind this guy, and he's taking his time in- Oh, no It's, like, a really long time
in his selection. So, um, we're waiting, and it is, it is taking a long time, but I'm being patient 'cause I know the, what's coming, and I'm excited about having my Puff Wheat Square. And Shubh thinks under his breath, he says, "Let's go, bitch." And he thinks, he thinks the guy didn't hear him. But the guy turns around.
And we're the only three people there, and I'm like, "We're gonna end up in a full-on fist fight here." Yeah. So then I just went, "Coming."
And I-
Philippe: That's,
Shubh: uh, that's what I do
Philippe: And then you guys walked away.
Rita: And then, [00:38:00] yeah, we left. I didn't get my pumpkin square. That is
Philippe: so cute. I think we went back for it.
Rita: Well, but it was such a... Oh my God.
Philippe: Was this the same guy who made you uncomfortable at the dance? No.
Rita: Yeah. This is many years
Philippe: ago.
Shubh: Oh, yeah.
That's a good story. That's, uh, uh, we had been dating for a couple years, but I was pretty sure. I was like, "Okay, this is the girl for me."
Philippe: After that?
Shubh: Well, yeah. When someone comes through for you in the clutch like that, like-
Philippe: Yeah, seriously. Let's go, bitch. Asks you, turns around like, "What?" Yeah. And you, and then-
Chaz: Go
Philippe: away.
Rita: Go
Shubh: away. Uh, yeah, that's a good one. Yeah, you're right. I do not do a great job of hiding my, um, uh, intolerance of certain situations sometimes.
Rita: No, no. Yeah. He is not good at that.
Shubh: Yeah.
Rita: That is one thing that-
Shubh: I do not have a poker
Rita: face ...
Shubh: I'll say.
Rita: No, he will let you know very clearly how he feels about any situation he is in.
Shubh: Okay. Yeah.
Rita: Mm-hmm.
Shubh: Yeah Huh. I guess I could say I'd work on that, but I, I don't know that it's gonna happen at this point.
Rita: No, I don't think
Shubh: it is. But- I mean- ... Rita is great at it. 'Cause Rita's always like, uh, she... So she's like, "Oh, [00:39:00] you..." You know, I like... I'm more of an extrovert than she is. We, we go to a party or an event, and she will, like, work the room.
And she always says, "Oh, I d- I can't do it. I can't do it." She will work the room, engage with everyone, make everyone feel seen and heard, and I'm like, "This is unbelievable."
Philippe: Oh, wow.
Shubh: But then she's like, "Girl, that was awful." So she's got, but she's got this, uh, this skill set, the ability to turn it on. I do not.
I need to be, I need to be enjoying myself in order for me to show that I'm enjoying myself. Mm-hmm. I think that's probably true.
Rita: Mm-hmm.
Philippe: Uh, so you guys are both from Edmonton.
Rita: Mm-hmm.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Wh- whose job did you move for? Oh.
Shubh: Oh.
Rita: I followed him.
Philippe: Oh.
Rita: Yeah. 'Cause I went to school in Western, so London, Ontario. Yeah. So I did my undergrad at U of A, and then I did dental school at Western.
And then, um, Shubh was doing a co-op in Calgary.
Shubh: And- I, I was full-time. I had a real job. I was grown-up job. That was after school. Remember when you came?
Rita: Oh, you're right. That's right. But- And [00:40:00] so then I... And then I, I have siblings that live here as well. Yeah. And so then-
Shubh: This is the other thing. As much as she...
I- it was very kind- ... that she said she followed me, she also did have brother and sister here-
Rita: Yes ...
Shubh: whom she's very close
Rita: with, so. So it was a, it was a easy decision, but, but it was basically, yeah, I came back to Calgary.
Philippe: Okay.
Rita: Yeah.
Philippe: And you were like, "Sh- this is probably, like, the only job Shubh can get right now.
I can get a job anywhere." Honestly, that's still true.
Shubh: Yeah. That hasn't changed. Shit, these are good questions. Uh- They, yeah ... what else do I not do well?
Rita: Hmm. Oh.
Shubh: Man, there's a few things. I'm pr- um, oh, I'm not great about... Rita has made me more punctual over time, but I'm not great about being on time.
Rita: Oh, you've gotten so much better
Shubh: now.
I always think I have enough time, you know?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: I always think I have enough time, and I never have enough time.
Rita: That's true.
Philippe: Sh- Yeah. Shubh, should we just make this an airing of grievances? Like, do you have some things you wanna call Shubh out for? [00:41:00]
Chaz: No, I think Shubh's perfect.
Shubh: Oh, thank goodness. This is the, this is a segment I like.
It's called let's tell Shubh everything he's good at.
Philippe: I have one last question for you, Rita. Go ahead. Do you have an idea to pitch us?
Rita: I have two.
Philippe: Oh. This is my podcast. Don't ask us.
Rita: Yeah. No, no, you got it. I have, I have two, but before we get into, I think, either of them- You- ... there needs to be a little bit of a backstory.
Philippe: Yeah. Before we get into either of them, let's do another 20 minutes.
Rita: Yeah, no. We are 50 minutes in, so
Shubh: yeah. Yeah. We're gonna stretch this into two episodes.
Rita: Okay. I'll be- Yeah ... I'll be fast. So back in March, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. So fast-forward to four months later, where we are now, and I basically had that entire time off, which, which has been lovely.
Yeah. But I made sure that, you know, we could go to every, every concert, every event, like, for our kids, every school event, every [00:42:00] tournament, recital. Whatever they had, I wanted to make sure that, that we were there. And so one of the... Yeah, that was a super serious way to start something. Yeah. But, but, um, o- one of the events that we were able to go to was our girls' track and field, city's track and field meet.
And so it was a full day.
Shubh: Yep.
Rita: And Shubh and I both just took the whole day, and we spent it there. Whoa.
Shubh: Yeah.
Rita: And their events were kinda sprinkled throughout. It wasn't like they were all at a certain time, and so we spent the entire day just watching all the events together. And, you know, I was g- I was getting into it.
And so every, every event that we watched, I actually would end up cheering for the person who was coming in last. Yeah. And it didn't matter, uh, what school they were from, the age. Like, it didn't even matter. I was just cheering them full on, and we actually both noticed that it made a difference in their [00:43:00] performance.
Shubh: No way.
Rita: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. Th- yeah, these kids... And, and she were cheering for the people who were last, and then all, pretty much every other kid from, uh, our kids' school who didn't have somebody there cheering for them, you were cheering for.
Rita: Yes.
Shubh: And these kids would be like, if they were running around the track, they'd be coming down the back stretch.
And they'd be like, you could, they're huffing and puffing, and it looked like they were just about to stop. And then Rita, like, you could hear her voice over everybody, be like, "Let's go, Griffith Woods." And the kid would look up in the crowd and would legitimately finish the race, like, full-on running.
Philippe: No
Shubh: way.
Every time.
Rita: Every time. Like, you actually noticed a difference, and so this is where the idea was born. So the tagline is basically- Every kid should have someone in the stands
Philippe: Oh my God.
Rita: And so, you know, but life's busy.
Philippe: Yeah.
Rita: Right? And life happens, and there's work meetings, there's travel, there's errands, there's illness that can happen, there's recovery that can happen.
You can't be everywhere at once. [00:44:00] So this is a business idea where parents can hire vetted- Yeah ... enthusiastic-
Philippe: Wow
Rita: Parents ... basically cheerleaders as their stand-in cheer squad for their children. And, you know, you tell us the kid's name, you tell us the event, tell us what's, you know, what would make them feel special.
Would it be having a sign? Would it be just cheering their name? Um, and we bring the enthusiasm, and it's literally to just be there and cheer on-
Shubh: Wait. Tell them the name.
Rita: Oh, the name. So the name is Holla
Philippe: Atcha. That's so good. I'm very glad you went this direction and not, like, some weird youth sports betting where you just- Oh, so, okay
you, like, you cheer- We, we're- You bet on the last place one and then cheer them on, and then they win We,
Shubh: we... Okay, no.
Philippe: So I,
Shubh: you know, this is less Rita, more [00:45:00] me. We were doing a little, like, um, uh-
Philippe: You were betting
Shubh: on s- ... a little gambling on... So, like, before every race would start, if we didn't have a horse or a human in the race, Rita and I, Rita and I would each pick a winner, and then we would sort of, like, cheer a little bit harder for that kid.
Like, we'd pick them based on, I would pick them on what kind of shoes they were wearing. I'd just be like, "Hey, those shoes look faster than the other kid's shoes." So youth sports, I mean, I'm not advocating for that as the business. I'm just saying maybe we talk about that separately later. That could be like a weekend thing.
Was there
Philippe: correlation between shoes and winners?
Shubh: Uh, no.
Philippe: No.
Shubh: No. Uh, but I love this idea so much 'cause every person, every kid, every kid responded to this, and Rita's voice would carry over every other person in the crowd. And, like, we were texting friends of ours who couldn't be there, right?
Chaz: Mm-hmm.
Shubh: Be like, "Hey, we just saw, you know, this kid.
We cheered her on. Here's a little video we got. Look how great they did." And the friends would be like, "Oh my God, thank you so much." And then I wanted to follow up and been [00:46:00] like, "How much would you pay for this service?" But, but then, Reets, I got to thinking. This is obviously very applicable to youth, uh, uh, cheering on, but then, uh, grownups, you know, like a little positive affirmation.
Philippe, you're constantly hosting events. You're up there talking. Sometimes the crowd's very lively and engaged. Sometimes they're a little dead.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: So what if Rita expanded this empire beyond cheering for youth sports and was basically just like, "Come out to your events." She had a couple people sprinkled in the crowd.
If somebody on the panel made, like, an okay joke, they just laughed really hard. They could... Right? We could just-
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: But this can grow. What do you think of this idea?
Philippe: This is a great... I genuinely think this is a remarkable, um, like, nonprofit idea- Mm-hmm ... if I may. Mm-hmm. Like, you could actually start Holla Atcha and just do, like, try and organize big-ass groups of people to go to youth sports and just cheer for everyone, and [00:47:00] people would show up I feel like.
Like, you could get stadiums full of people. It would be so much fun.
Rita: I hope so. I would like to think that people would wanna just go out of the goodness of their hearts and, you know, cheer on.
Shubh: Yeah, but also, like, kids don't always play to the level of sports where they get big crowds. So d- if you got to play in front of a bigger crowd one time-
Philippe: Yeah
Shubh: that's an incredible feeling.
Rita: Mm-hmm.
Philippe: Holla Atcha, and then you just, like, go to events, and, like, people just sign up for fun, and they, like, donate to, like, cover the organizational effect, if I-
Shubh: Oh my God ...
Philippe: it'd actually be a ton of fun.
Shubh: So I mean, I don't... I mean, yes, the nonprofit is great. Philippe knows nonprofits.
Um-
Rita: I feel like both my pitches are nonprofits. But
Shubh: so you know how the school's always sending us emails about fundraising? Yes. They're like, "Hey, we've got apples to sell," and I'm like, "Goddamn, we don't need more apples," or d- "We got this," and we just end up donating money to the school. They're selling apples
Philippe: now as fundraising?
Shubh: Yeah, they always- Oh, yeah ... sell ap- apples. Um-
Philippe: What?
Shubh: Well, what if this was, like, a school? Like, you could work this into the school fundraiser. [00:48:00] So, like, "Hey, we know a bunch of parents can't go to the track meet today. For a $10 donation to the school, we'll get other parents to cheer for your kid." What do you guys think of that idea?
Philippe: That's not a bad idea.
Shubh: Right? Combining- Proxy ... combining. Rita doesn't seem sold yet.
Philippe: Proxy love.
Shubh: Rita doesn't love the nonprofit part of this thing. Well,
Rita: no, no, no, no, no, no. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. It, it's, it's not that. I just feel like if it's within your school-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Rita: then-
Shubh: You should be cheering for
Rita: the many, right?
You should just be cheering for the
Shubh: many, right? But they weren't. People weren't. You were cheering-
Rita: No, no, but that's- ... for every kid ... that's what I'm saying. So I'm- So I was cheering for just... I literally was just cheering for the underdog, like the person who was- But
Shubh: you also cheered for every kid from our kids' school who didn't have somebody there cheering for them.
Philippe: That's so sweet.
Rita: No, I did.
Shubh: So I'm just saying the school should raise money on the, on concept of this idea. Uh. You're not sure. I'm not sure. You just think it should be out of the goodness of your heart.
Rita: Yeah.
Shubh: Okay. All right. Well, agree to disagree. [00:49:00] But what do you think of that idea, Phil?
Philippe: Uh, I love it. Like, I, I really love it.
It's so much good that- When she- ... can come in the world ...
Shubh: I... So we were at this track and field event, and she was doing it, and then she basically at that event started to pitch me. She was like, "You know what's a good idea? I should just do this, like, while I'm off. People should just hire me to come cheer for their kids because I'm off, right?
Like, if they're working, I'm off for a few months. It's like a, it's a positive out of a negative situation." Mm-hmm. She, she was constructing the pitch as we were talking, and I was sitting there going This is an unbelievably good idea.
Philippe: Have you guys seen that movie Family Man?
Shubh: Uh, Nicolas Cage?
Philippe: No.
Shubh: Oh.
Philippe: I'm thinking about the wrong movie.
I
Rita: was like, "The Nicolas Cage movie- No ...
Shubh: is
Philippe: totally what I was thinking of." Who's the guy from The Whale? Brendan Fra- Fraser. Brendan
Shubh: Fraser, yeah.
Philippe: Have you seen this movie?
Shubh: What's it called?
Philippe: Um, it takes place in Japan, and he gets hired to, like-
Rita: Oh. Right ... rent. This is
Shubh: on our
Rita: list. It's, uh- It was like rent a family or something.
Yeah, it's
Shubh: something like that. Yeah, yeah,
Rita: [00:50:00] yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: It's a great
Rita: movie. We have not
Philippe: seen it. Yeah, he
Shubh: gets hired to be the, the, the kid's long lost father, right?
Philippe: Yeah, and I forget why. Oh, to help him, to help the kid get into school.
Shubh: I think this is a different business
Philippe: idea. Because in, in Japan they need a dad to get into school or whatever.
Yeah. But the mom convinces the kid that this is actually her dad- Yeah ... and then finds out that she's- he's rented. I mean, sort of ruins ...
Shubh: Yeah,
Philippe: yeah. But, um. No, I
Shubh: think it was given away in the title.
Philippe: Right. And then, um, obviously, but, but both of them fall in love with each other.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: So
Rita: maybe- Also, he becomes their-
Philippe: He kind
Rita: of-
Philippe: stepdad. Well, no, I think after-
Shubh: Yeah, so I get where Chaz's concern is, is that the kids will get bullied 'cause there's always these randos showing up to cheer for you. But maybe you could get, like, a permanent advocate who showed up, and they could be like, "Oh, that's my Aunt Rita." Yeah. Right?
Philippe: Yeah. I- I'm maybe saying that this is this is one of the reasons it might be a bad idea if it's like-
always the same person, and the kid forms some, like, relationship with this, like- Oh
Shubh: yeah, yeah ...
Philippe: person who just cheers for them.
Shubh: Yeah. Hm. [00:51:00]
Rita: I see what you're saying.
Shubh: Oh, yeah. You know? That's, yeah, we don't love that. Yeah. No, but I could think it could be a positive, still positive-
Philippe: Relationship ...
Shubh: we would have to have some guardrails in place.
Philippe: Yeah. Oh, this is the stran- who's that? That's the stranger who cheers for me. Yeah,
Shubh: yeah, yeah. That's my... Well, yeah. I mean, they, you know, if they're really wealthy, they probably have a stranger driving them around or making
Rita: their dinner. Well, or think of it like it's just the same person at each event, too.
So it's kinda like a nanny, right? Yeah. Like it's someone that's known. A fanny. Yeah. Yeah, there you go. And so it's someone that's known to the family, and then maybe it's not as weird.
Shubh: No, I like it. I still like it. I like
Philippe: it.
Shubh: Okay, should we rate this bad boy? She's got one more idea, which I think is- I think that-
gonna make you very uncomfortable, but also very happy.
Philippe: Yeah. Um, Chaz, Chaz is just mad 'cause he does the opposite. He goes to Muskoka and gets rich people to give him affirmation. Is this
Shubh: while he's water-skiing and people are like, "
Philippe: Great job, Chaz"? Yeah, that's it, while they're ignoring their [00:52:00] kids. "That's a sick water-skiing move."
I don't know the terminology. Uh, okay, what do you got? Uh, this, I think this is, like, a great idea. I love it. Um, I, it's about a, a, a 62 salsa from me.
Rita: Okay.
Shubh: That's a very good score. Um, I'm inclined to give it a 75 because you're my wife But I'm, I'm gonna respect the sanctity- I would carry- ... of the program.
Thank you. And I'm gonna give you a 71.
Philippe: Oh, that's
Shubh: not respecting. I'll take it. Yeah. What do you mean? It's a fabulous idea. I love this idea so much. I, 'cause I want it to be, and I want Rita to take it and expand this em- empire just beyond cheering for kids. I would like somebody cheering for me when I, like, crush a great presentation.
Philippe: Yeah, I
Shubh: like that. You know? Just, like, someone who's posing as a member of the client, and I'm like, "And, uh, uh, you know, and that's how I think we can achieve these synergies in the future." And then someone just gets up and is like
Philippe: Yeah. "Whoo!"
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: That would be fun. That'd be great. Um, [00:53:00] or, or like, they could even just be walking by and be like, "Hey, I was in the next room-
Shubh: And that was the greatest presentation I've ever heard
Philippe: I've ever heard," j- uh, while everyone else is still in the room, you know? Mm.
Shubh: I just think showing up at Tech Thursday- That would be fun ... you know, when, uh, 'cause again, I've been to a few of them. There's been a couple of, like, the energy's a little low. I don't wanna say duds. Energy's a little low.
Philippe: Yep.
Shubh: Just a little, little more, like Rita's got a couple people in the back and they're just like, "Yeah, talk more about, uh, data centers."
You know? Like, people would love that. Yeah, people would
Philippe: love that. Yeah, it's great.
Shubh: Okay, I love this idea.
Philippe: I would, by the way, if you're organizing, like, a big group of people to go to, like, a youth sports event where no one's gonna be there on a Saturday, I would come and I would bring some friends.
Shubh: Yeah, you can c- you can bring all your friends- That's good to know
and watch our kids play sports anytime you want.
Rita: Yep.
Philippe: Yeah, if I feel
Rita: like- That's exactly where we will call you.
Philippe: Yeah, yeah, yeah. If I fill the bleachers, would, would that be fun?
Shubh: Yeah, it would be incredible.
Philippe: That'd be awesome.
Shubh: Yeah. Don't get kicked out, though. You can't yell at the refs. I can't, I can't, like, you have you guys, you and your buddies all [00:54:00] get carded by the ref for, for yelling at a 14-year-old referee.
Philippe: All right. Fair enough. Yeah. I used to be a, a 14-year-old referee, so I know the-
Shubh: In what sport?
Philippe: Soccer.
Shubh: Oh, really?
Rita: Oh.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Used
Rita: to. So is that the age? Is it 14 when you're able to ref?
Shubh: Uh, no, there's kids younger than that that ref. But it just depends on age group. Oh, okay.
Philippe: Yeah, it was, uh, I wasn't very good.
Shubh: Were
Rita: you g- Did you get yelled at a lot?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Oh, no.
Philippe: It's because
Shubh: you, like, stopped paying attention from time to time?
Philippe: Yeah. Yeah, that, that strikes me as what would've happened. And then also, like, I could never, like, it would go off, people, you know, when they'd- Yeah ... like, kick it at the sidelines. Right. And I would, like, have no idea where it went.
Oh, yeah. And I would just, like, point my hand in one direction. Well, it's also because you got
Shubh: distracted by a butterfly.
Philippe: Yeah, fair. Butterfly. And I would always call it early as well. Uh, "Ref, I thought there was supposed to be 35-minute halves. Uh, sorry, I gotta go see about a girl." So it's- I gotta go see if it's a date or not.
Rita: Yeah, exactly.
Shubh: Uh, okay, Rita, fabulous first pitch, second [00:55:00] pitch idea.
Rita: Okay. So my second pitch I feel like truly is more like a nonprofit. Okay. And so this does also go back to my diagnosis back in March. So basically, you're told that you have cancer. There's a lot of loss associated with that, whether it be physically, mentally, emotionally, it's, you know, it's draining.
So There should be some perks. And so everyone always makes jokes about playing a cancer card, and my idea is let's actually make one to, you know, make life a little bit easier- Oh, wow ... to, you know, h- kind of find hidden-
Shubh: This is
Rita: my
Shubh: favorite idea ... yeah, find- This is my favorite idea we've had on the entire
Philippe: program.
This is a great idea. Are you saying, like, you get discounts everywhere?
Rita: So, so okay, so these are examples that I'm thinking. Like, you're going to the [00:56:00] movies, you're going to Spruce Meadows- Would you use the- ... for a cavalry game- Yeah ... and they're like, "Sorry, you can't bring outside food," but- Cancer
Shubh: card. ...
Rita: play your cancer card, boom, you can bring in whatever it is that you need to bring in.
Shubh: Yeah. You gotta be eating healthier. You can't just eat, like, fried food at the old... right?
Rita: No, exactly. Or even at, you're at the airport and you're allowed that one single bag to fit all your lotions and everything in, but if you're a patient who's undergoing chemo or radiation therapy and you need an extra bag, boom, play your cancer card and you get it.
Yeah. Or even discounts, like you were saying, on wigs or consults with nutritionists, physiotherapists, like, all of it. Like, I just feel like there should- I feel like
Philippe: everywhere.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Those are all the real r- ideas. And then e- even, and then there's, like, if you're at a wedding, and you're, like, a table 11, you know, they start calling the tables in order.
You should just be able to, like, hand the card to the emcee, and they'll be like, "Uh, table 11 goes first."
Rita: Or you get [00:57:00] pulled over for a speeding ticket. Oh, that's a good one. Take it out and see what happens.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. What do you think of this
Philippe: idea? It's actually really, really... Like, who, w- what business owner would not have a cancer card, like, would not be accepting of a cancer card, you know?
The
Rita: ones that are jerks.
Philippe: Yeah. Yeah. Ones that are jerks. Yeah,
Shubh: you don't wanna shop there.
Philippe: It's actually a great idea.
Shubh: Matt, would you give us a discount on the podcast studio now that... Yep, yep, he's saying 100%,
Philippe: yeah. He said it's free? Yeah, he said we'll never have to
Shubh: pay again. He's not on the mic, so we just have to assume that's what he said.
Philippe: Yeah. Damn, that would be, yeah, that would be awesome. I'm d- trying to think, has there been anything else in your life where you're like, "I need, I need a cancer card for this," or, like-
Rita: Well, those were, those were the main ones that I was-
Philippe: Yeah ...
Rita: that I had already brought up. Yeah, food
Shubh: into a public venue is a, is a definite one.
Rita: Yeah, and this, it, it came into play where we actually did go to Spruce Meadows, and they are very, like- Yeah, they got, they search your bags ... it is a strict- Yeah ... it is a strict no outside food, where they're searching your bag. And so I had this salad that I had made [00:58:00] that I had at the bottom of my purse, and then I had my wallet and stuff on top.
And so the guy's like, "Can I look in your bag?" And I'm like, "Sure." And so I open it, and he's like, "Can you move your wallet?" And I was like, "Oh God, I'm gonna play the cancer card." Did you? And so then he removes my wallet, he sees my salad, we make eye contact for, like, three seconds, and he goes, "I think you're good."
A- and he lets me go. So I didn't have to, I didn't have to actually pull it out, but I was ready. Wow. She was ready. I was ready. Also thank
Philippe: you- Have you ever had to use it?
Rita: No, I haven't. Okay. It was funny. The funny thing is, though, at the airport I actually had a full bag of lotions and everything, because I had all our kids' stuff as well.
Yeah. And so, um, Asha, actually our oldest, she comes up to me and she goes, "Mom, play the cancer card." Yeah. So, but I didn't, I
Shubh: didn't need to. I just think, like- We were
Rita: good ...
Shubh: you know, your, you know, the no public washrooms, but, you know, like, the medication for people going through this stuff, right? Like, "Hey, there's my card."
There's real reasons, and I think there should also be fun reasons. Like, you should just get, like-
Rita: Yeah, 100%.
Shubh: You should just, [00:59:00] uh, you should be able to use it g- uh, like, to just jump line at the movies.
Rita: Or priority seating.
Shubh: Oh, priority seating.
Philippe: Yeah. In the middle.
Rita: Yeah, right? When you're
Philippe: re- Like the Odyssey
Shubh: like, when you're renting a car you get a free upgrade.
Rita: Yeah.
Shubh: Like, they just- From, like, a regular car to, like, a, a BMW Right?
Rita: Great. I think it's all great ideas. This is such a brilliant idea. And it's just to, you know, help people live their best lives and just make things a little bit easier.
Philippe: Yeah. But, like, it might be too good, you know?
Like, if you could get middle seating at the Odyssey.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: I've been trying to get a seat at the Odyssey. I'm looking at, into September- ... and there's nothing. A little skin cancer.
Oh, God.
Shubh: Yeah, I think actually, you know, the, the only problem with that idea-
Philippe: Melanoma can't count, right? Yes. We're not counting melanoma in this. Like, if, if I get a cancer- Oh, you
Rita: can get pretty serious, so yeah.
Philippe: Really?
Shubh: Yes, it counts.
Rita: Maybe there can be levels, like credit cards. Yeah. Tiers. Right? Like, I mean- Like [01:00:00] a blackjack?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Uh- Like tier ...
Philippe: Yeah
Rita: Yeah, there's like ... Yeah
Philippe: Tier one is, like, just melanoma, and then, like... And the doctor's assessing. He's like- Yeah, yeah,
Shubh: yeah ... "
Philippe: You're platinum." Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Shubh: The, uh, the thing is this would be immediately weaponized by terrible people. That's the only problem.
Philippe: I agree.
Shubh: Im- immediately terrible people would be like-
there'd be, there'd be a, they'd be, there'd be like a secondary market. You know, the fake IDs, but fake cancer cards basically.
Rita: Oh, no, so there'd be- Um- We'd need to come up with a way to-
Shubh: Chip and PIN ...
Rita: to, yeah- You need some
Shubh: chip
Rita: and PIN technology ... to bypass that.
Philippe: Yeah. I was, I was also, my mind was also going to, like, you know...
I mean, I mean, I'm, I'm sure there are terrible people who get- Yeah ... cancer as well. Oh, right. How do you... Right And, and just like how entitled would there be if they also carried- ... if they also wielded this power, you know?
Shubh: Yes.
Philippe: Where, like- Okay ... they, like, just felt like they owned every room they walked into.
Shubh: Yeah. Maybe there's, like, a, an adjudicating panel of, like- ... 10 other folks who have been going through it that are
Philippe: like- You could take these people to- ...
Shubh: like a jury that's kinda like, "Hey, [01:01:00] man, no, you can't just take... You can't just walk into Superstore- ... and stuff your pockets full of mangoes because you have cancer."
Right?
Philippe: A jury of your peers. Yeah. Like, other people who have gotten diagnosed- Yeah ... with cancer, they, they can say-
Shubh: Yeah ...
Philippe: like
Shubh: that. You can't, you can't push an old lady out of your way- ... just 'cause, you know? Like, there are limits. I think that's fair, right?
Rita: Yes.
Shubh: Yeah, there'd have to be some guardrails in place, I think.
But, uh, I, I mean, on balance I love this idea. When you pitched this idea, I also was like, "This is the greatest, this is the greatest idea."
Philippe: Yeah, to me this is a-
Shubh: And I like this nonprofit angle that you guys have come up with, 'cause you could- Yeah,
Rita: I think it would make a lot of people- You could- ... angry if it wasn't
Shubh: you could monetize it. Yeah. But the, all the profit's going to, like, Terry Fox or the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Rita: Mm-hmm.
Philippe: Right? What do you think of this?
Shubh: 100%. ACF. Yeah. Yeah. So cancer card.
Philippe: I love it.
Shubh: Yeah, I think it's a perfect idea.
Rita: Ooh. Yeah. 75?
Shubh: Well, I love Philippe. Go first.
Philippe: I think a [01:02:00] 75. This is a great idea.
Rita: Oh, yeah, 'cause you guys would get canceled if the girl who had cancer- ... you gave her to.
Shubh: Yeah. Well, there is that. This is the one. This is the one. I also, I also- ... I also have to go home with that person. Uh, but I actually legit... When you first said it, that was the impetus, 'cause, you know, I've been like, like, softly, like, being like, "Hey, Rita, you should come on the podcast at some point."
And she was like, "Eh, I don't really like..." Uh, um, um, R- Rita falsely believes that she can't, like, uh, uh, be funny on the spot, and I'm like, "That is absolutely not the case." So I- '
Philippe: Cause you've b- been not funny for, uh, 33 episodes.
Shubh: Yes. You didn't ask Rita if she thought I, I was good at podcasting. Um, uh, but she said- Yeah, Rita, who's
Philippe: your favorite host on this podcast?
Rita: I gotta say, when I heard the first one- We
Shubh: should've just fucking talked about Philippe all the time.
Rita: I- I really was like, "This dynamic"- Yeah ... "needs to continue." No, no.
Like, I
Shubh: love- You said, "Philippe
Rita: is so"-
Shubh: I
Rita: love
Shubh: you
Rita: guys
Shubh: together You said, "Philippe [01:03:00] is so funny. I can't believe how funny Philippe is." This is the truth. This is... I'm not even, I'm not... There's no bit here. Wow, Philippe's really, really funny. And I was like- I- ... "Yeah, you did say that a few times." I
Rita: am a big fan, Phil.
I am. I am a big fan. That's
Shubh: amazing. Well- I love that. Uh- Thank you. I'm a big fan of you. So. I don't love this. Well, you guys are now hosting a, a podcast where Phil gets dating advice. Should we
Rita: just lie down on this couch?
Shubh: Uh, yeah, it's a 70, it's a 75 for me.
Rita: Ah.
Shubh: To the point where I would like this idea to actually get done.
Philippe: Yeah, I was actually thinking about that. I was thinking about my fundraising coming up in November.
Shubh: Yes. Yes. You should talk about this.
Philippe: Well, we... Oh, that's a good plug. Um, in November, me and my friends are hosting, um, uh, this is our third year doing it.
We host, um... Is it our third year? Third year hosting the run, fourth year hosting the Massage Bash.
Shubh: So- It's
Philippe: like
Shubh: a [01:04:00] gala.
Philippe: A gala. And one's a 10K, where we, like, do 10K, and then we end at Cold Garden in November, and they have, like, a big outdoor rave. It's a ton of fun. But all proceeds go to- In
Rita: November?
Shubh: Yeah, you had us until the outdoor rave
Rita: part.
Is it
Shubh: that cold in November?
Philippe: Yeah. It was. It, that... It's called the Cold Patrol 10K.
Rita: Oh, sorry. Yeah. I missed that.
Philippe: Okay. No, that's okay. And, uh, um, we raised, we raised money for Alberta Cancer Foundation. Yes. And last year we raised something like, I think enough to get this idea off the ground. Yeah
Shubh: I think you just get a card from your doctor, oncologist that's like, "Hey."
You have to- And then businesses are like, "You know what? You get to do this if you have, if you're here with that card."
Philippe: I, no, I think what it would be is, like, similar to how Neo built their loyalty program, you would just call restaurants and restaurant owners- Yeah ... and be like, "We're introducing a new cancer card in, in, in Calgary."
Shubh: Yeah. "
Philippe: Would you offer a discount to people who have gotten diagnosed with cancer?"
Shubh: Can I just ask Abrita a clarifying question? I'm not trying to make this funny, but it might come out funny. Um, [01:05:00] is it forever?
Philippe: That's a great... I was gonna ask.
Rita: That's a great, that's, that's a good question. '
Shubh: Cause, you know, people do get better.
Rita: Yes,
Philippe: and- If it's in remission, do they take it away?
Rita: Yeah. So no, this is because I would qualify for this membership to a club nobody wants to be a part of. Yeah. But I also, I was also very lucky in terms of when my cancer was found and in terms of not needing any chemotherapy or radiation therapy and just being on cruise control now with meds, right?
So I do find myself very lucky and grateful for that, and I, there are certain privileges that this card can give which maybe I don't qualify for, which is why I'm thinking-
Shubh: Well,
Rita: you'll still qualify- ... like, there are- ... it's
Shubh: your idea ...
Rita: there are levels to it, so maybe when you are done treatment and you are feeling, um, a certain way, maybe then you are downgraded to the more beginner level of card.
Philippe: To, yeah.
Shubh: Right? Also, I think you should be able to keep it for a [01:06:00] while 'cause there's a lot of emotional and physical trauma-
Rita: There is ...
Shubh: it takes a while.
Rita: And sometimes, actually, like, community is so important. Right. So you know how you do your Tech Thursdays? Yeah. So maybe people who are, you know, m- members of this club, uh, get together on a monthly basis or something too where they have that sense of community and can just, you know...
Shubh: And then o- other people come and cheer for them.
Rita: Yes. Yes. So- Cancer Thursdays ... like, I think there's a lot of ways, so maybe then you have the lifetime membership to those types of things.
Shubh: Yeah.
Rita: Right? And so yeah, I don't know. It's something that would need to be worked out. It's all still-
Shubh: I think- Maybe it renews every six months
doing the cancer card in combination with, uh, with Cold Patrol- would be kind of amazing actually
Philippe: That's what I was thinking
Shubh: Like legitimately doing this would be- Oh, I
Rita: think it'd be
Shubh: phenomenal ... like, and I'm, I know businesses would come out of the woodwork to be like, "Hey, if you have your cancer card, you get this.
This is what you're eligible for." M- [01:07:00] Matt just put his hand up. Yeah, 'cause he's giving us the podcast- Well, he's like giving- I think he said free for 20- I think for free ... free for 26.
Philippe: So long as you're on those meds, we got this for you for free. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. As long as Rita's here, yeah, yeah,
Shubh: yeah. We got 10
Rita: years.
Shubh: Yeah. Card is non-transferable.
Philippe: Is it 10 years on the meds?
Rita: It is.
Philippe: Holy.
Rita: Yeah. No, it's 10 years.
Philippe: Are they bad? The meds, do they make you feel bad?
Rita: I think I've, uh, been lucky in terms of not having some severe side effects that can come- Okay ... with it. So knock on wood.
Philippe: Yeah.
Rita: Yeah. It's been, it's been not too bad.
Philippe: Okay.
Rita: Mm-hmm. I'm glad to hear. Mm-hmm.
Shubh: Yeah. She's been amazing. I mean, obviously, but like, uh- Yeah, unbelievable. I don't wanna say too many nice things about her, 'cause she only said several nice things about me. No, just unreal. And, uh, and you were great during this too. I know you were one of the only people I told early on, so I appreciate all your support.
Philippe: Yeah. No, I'm, uh, I'm glad you guys are doing great. How did the kids take it? I haven't really talked to, to you guys about that.
Shubh: [01:08:00] Uh, we took, waited a while to tell the kids.
Rita: We, yeah, we, we told, we decided to tell the kids four days before my surgery date, even though we knew months in advance. Because, um, you just don't want them to be carrying the worry- Yeah
and just the, uh, the unknown of what's gonna, what's gonna happen. But they, I honestly think they took it the best that they- Yeah ... could have. They're- Because by the end of it-
Shubh: They were just doing bits ...
Rita: yeah, like we were laughing- ... by the end of it. By the- It was like every emotion.
Shubh: Yeah, so there was like, one of the youngest one, there was like the immediate visceral reaction, and then she took about 10 minutes to calm down.
The older two were a little more calm, but took a minute. And then we did say, 'cause they were like, kinda like, "Okay, well what can we do?" Or, and I was like, "Hey, listen, the only thing you need to do is keep doing what you're doing." Yeah. Right? Mm-hmm. "You guys are doing great in school. You're doing all great in all these activities."
And then, you know, me being me, I said, "So you do not get to use this as an excuse- ... for anything, all right? You don't get to go like-
Philippe: They [01:09:00] don't... It's a non-transferable cancer card.
Shubh: Yeah, that's right. Yeah. You don't get to play the ch- Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. You can't be like, "Oh, I didn't do great on my test, uh, because I was sad about, about, like things."
I'm like, "You have to kinda like, you gotta stay locked in." And, um, and then we were talking about it, and I said, "So Mom won't be able to drive for a few weeks, so like one thing is, uh, you know, you might have to like walk to school occasionally- ... or walk home." And then my oldest looks at us and she goes, "Dad, I don't know if I can walk to school in the morning, so-
my feet are gonna be too sad."
Rita: Our kids for some reason- I mean, she's, she's- ... have an aversion to walking to school in
Philippe: the morning. Yeah, yeah. It's just, it was just like- How far is the school though? Uh-
Rita: Oh ...
Philippe: it's
Shubh: about 800 meters,
Rita: so. Yeah, like it's not- Oh, really? ... far at all.
Philippe: Yeah. I, I'm, I, I kind of understand. I was using that same excuse when I found out about my sleep apnea.
You're mild, you're mild sleep apnea. I was like, "Whoa, that walk is too far, man."
I don't know if I can. [01:10:00] That's why she was cooking for me last week, you know, is 'cause she was like, "I don't know if I can anymore."
Rita: Hey, wait, what time is this data?
Shubh: Oh, yeah, you better... Wait, we, we're running over time here. Yeah.
Philippe: No, I think we're, yeah, we're, yeah. Well, we're
Shubh: also running over time. Matt's like, uh, "Hey, guys."
Philippe: Are we billed by the minute?
Shubh: Uh, no, he said it's free.
Philippe: 10 dollar drink. All,
Rita: all thanks, all thanks to me.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah. Uh, um, no, uh, you got any other questions for Rita before we, uh, we let her go?
Philippe: No, I'm, uh... Will you come on every week?
Rita: Every week?
Shubh: It's been better. This has been the most fun I've had in many episodes.
Rita: Oh, that's nice to hear.
Shubh: Yeah.
Rita: You kinda have to say that, though.
Shubh: No. Well, you just told me earlier, I say what I think. So you know that I'm saying what I think.
Philippe: We had one that was so
Shubh: bad over the break.
It was so bad. And we're not even- Did-
Rita: I think you're gonna have to cut this.
Shubh: Yeah, we might. No.[01:11:00]
Rita: Oh.
Shubh: We will cut this part. I mean, we don't wanna ... I mean, not because I'm worried about this person hearing. We just wanna maintain our reputation as being very kind people.
Rita: And professional.
Shubh: Don't care.
Rita: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Uh, this has been great. The, the, the, the space is great. I liked that I didn't have to get all sweaty and stressed out.
Philippe: Space is awesome.
Shubh: Uh-
Rita: Yeah, this is very, very legit ...
Shubh: Rita had two of the best ideas I think we've had.
Rita: Oh.
Shubh: Legitimately.
Philippe: One of the best.
Rita: Yeah, I don't think, I don't think everyone's in full agreement. But thank you.
Shubh: Well, I mean, go to hell, Phil.
Rita: Yeah.
Philippe: I'm just trying to maintain some sanctity. Yeah. I understand, I understand what you're doing right now, but
Chaz: You trying not to be the Russian judge?
Shubh: Uh, uh, I mean, I, I will ... Because I told these boys before you came on, I was, I text- I didn't tell you this before, ahead of time. I texted them, like, a month ago. I was like, "Rita's gonna come on. She has the two best ideas I think I've heard."
Rita: Oh, this is why. So- Your expectations were too [01:12:00] high.
Shubh: No, uh- Yeah- I think they
Rita: were appropriate ... you had false expectations.
Shubh: Uh, you could just play the cancer card and get your score on the first one bumped to a
Philippe: full
Shubh: 75. That's it. Yeah, yeah. Uh, well, Rita, thank you very much for coming in. No, thanks for having me. I know you were a bit nervous about ... Wait, hold on.
You were a bit ner- I, I don't wanna, uh, open the kimono w- uh, sh- ... how, how the sausage is made. That's it. Do you want to know where I slept? Uh, I don't wanna over, I don't, I don't wanna open the kimono to where you can see how the sausage is made. You
Philippe: don't have to give that much insight into your love life.
Rita: I wanna know where this is going.
Shubh: Yeah. Uh, you were a little nervous before-
Rita: Oh, yeah ... you came on. This is not something I like to do.
Shubh: And I said, "You're just talking to me and Phil."
Rita: I know. And how
Shubh: did
Rita: it feel? You guys make it very comfortable.
Shubh: Did you feel ... How do you feel now?
Rita: No, great.
Shubh: Good. You
Rita: did a great job.
You guys, you guys are just ... It's, you guys are great to talk to.
Shubh: Wow, I like how you said, "you guys," but, uh, you know- No, I love Phil ... you need to say Phil. Phil's, Phil's so funny and charming. He's also [01:13:00] confused. He doesn't know if he's going on dates or not. That's right. He's like a little Paddington Bear.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Except, you know, he can be a little mean sometimes. Yeah. He's like Paddington if Paddington had sleep apnea.
Rita: Oh my gosh
Shubh: Uh, I think you crushed it. I think you did great. You did awesome.
Rita: Well, well thank you. I think, uh-
Shubh: Even Matt thinks so ...
Rita: the only reason I'm here, I think, is really purely based on good old-fashioned nepotism, but I'll take it.
Shubh: Oh, you know what? Let's talk about nepotism. It's not just for the Whites anymore.
Philippe: Yeah, that's right. The nepotism or the cancer card.
Shubh: Ah,
Rita: yes.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Wow, that's, that's cool. Would, uh, cancer card, does anyone with a cancer card get to guest on the show?
Shubh: Mm.
Philippe: Wow. Careful. You said- Well, I
Shubh: mean, I don't think it's, like, a personality transplant necessarily, right? Like, this is not... Like, you gotta be charming and engaging and- Right
funny and interesting [01:14:00] and smart.
Philippe: Yeah, but it would give you, like, a-
Shubh: Ah It's a really good question. I don't know. I don't know. I don't wanna be that guy, but, you know.
Philippe: Testing the validity.
Shubh: Like, yeah, it's a good question. Hmm, I'll have to think about that one. Um, uh, do you want, uh, do you wanna ask us any questions before we go?
Rita: Well, I want an update from Phil.
Philippe: You got it.
Rita: In terms of- Or an up- ... what happened tonight ... or an up,
Philippe: or an up
Shubh: not date. Uh, anyway, sorry. Keep going.
Rita: That's, yeah, I want the update, and I wanna know what's going on.
Philippe: All right.
Rita: And, uh, yeah, no, if... I'm here to coach or help in any way that you
Shubh: need. Okay. Ooh. Could, could you put a little earpiece in tonight-
and Rita could just give you live feedback? I'll, like, sneak away to the bathroom and be like, "Rita, is this happening?" Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Who are you texting? Oh, a friend of mine's wife. Wait, what? Why? Uh- Or I'd be like, "My dentist."[01:15:00]
Philippe: Leave me alone.
Shubh: Oh, my God. I'm really concerned about my Miles sleep map. Uh, oh, the vegetarian thing. Wait, did you already say what you made her when you cooked vegetarian food?
Philippe: Yeah, pan butter s-
Shubh: Oh, that's right ... butter sage. Rabbiter, yeah.
Rita: Oh,
Shubh: tell
Rita: me how the tofu is because I'm starting to cook more with that too, and I'm always looking for recipes.
Shubh: We also have a great- Yeah ... vegetarian restaurant recommendation.
Rita: Oh, yes.
Shubh: For an actual date. Which one? If there's an actual third, uh, first, fourth, whatever date. It's
Rita: amazing.
Shubh: What's it called again? Bad- Badmanati?
Rita: Yes.
Shubh: Badmanati.
Philippe: That sounds great.
Shubh: It's a Asian fusion-ish.
Rita: Yeah, and it's vegan too.
Shubh: And it's ve- vegan?
I believe so. It's vegan, yeah. It's great. It's, like, legitimately good.
Philippe: Okay, I'll get that
Shubh: recommendation. McCloud Trail-ish.
Philippe: Okay.
Shubh: Yeah. We'll put it- Bad- ... we'll put it in the show notes ...
Philippe: Badmanati.
Rita: Put it in the show notes. I don't know if we're pronouncing it right.
Shubh: Yeah. I don't actually know. I've never known how to pronounce it.
I don't
Rita: even have my
Shubh: phone, so I can't even- I usually, uh, when we go- ... Google it ... I usually let's go, "Let's go to Badamanati." [01:16:00] Badamanati.
Rita: But it is fantastic.
Shubh: Yeah. You should just call her and be like, "Hey, don't worry about cooking. Let's go to the restaurant." Let's...
Rita: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. True. 'Cause you have a car. Might be too
Philippe: late.
My phone's over there. I think she's already cooking.
Shubh: She's probably, she's probably, you're probably 45 minutes late for dinner at this point.
Philippe: Yeah, dinner's cold. I just get in, like, you know, it's like one of those- Are you
Rita: late?
Philippe: It's like one of those scenes- No ... from the movie where, like- Oh, okay ... the
Shubh: plate's
Philippe: been waiting on there and she starts throwing things
Shubh: at me.
And there's, and there's a note that just says, "Your dinner's in the oven." Yeah.
Chaz: And you turn over, "Do
Shubh: you like me?" Yeah. "Or do you like Mickey?" Yeah. She's got curlers in her hair- And you leave ... and is watching TV in the bedroom. Yeah, it's locked.
Philippe: Yeah,
Shubh: yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Did you have fun with your friends?
All right.
Rita: Oh my gosh.
Shubh: Oh, okay, yeah, she wanted an update. No other questions before we go?
Rita: No, I'm good.
Shubh: Okay, just wants an update on the date. Uh, Rita, again, thank you very much. Philippe, thank you. This was fun.
Philippe: This was a great
Shubh: time. Yeah. Season two- Yeah ... episode one.
Philippe: Kicking it off strong.
Rita: Well, [01:17:00] thank you. Yeah.
Thank
Shubh: you for the opportunity. We just might do this one and just, just call it.
Philippe: We should get my dad on at some point in the season.
Shubh: Oh my God. That is my... Uh, now that Rita has come on, now my new white whale guest is your dad.
Rita: This whole season should just be family.
Shubh: My- my family's not that big. What? It was-
Rita: Oh, ours is gigantic.
Shubh: Yeah. I mean, I've lost half my family. I don't want things to get too dark. Oh.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Oh,
Philippe: yeah,
Shubh: true. Yeah. Yeah. Let's, uh, let's, uh- I could start bringing in my Quebecois cousins.
Philippe: Oh, I would love you to- They're the best ... get your dad
Shubh: on, though, from what I've heard. Ooh,
Philippe: what's your brother? Your brother'd probably be great, too.
Yeah. No? Eh. Yeah,
Shubh: he would. What about the dog?
Philippe: That would be... My brother would be okay. Uh, yeah, let's get your brother. You wouldn't know who's who. Actually, with my dad, you would not know who's who. He looks very much alike. I would really love for your dad to come on this podcast. All right. Next time he's in Calgary, I'll get him on.
Shubh: Yes. This episode's incredible.
Philippe: I don't know if he listens, though.
Shubh: I don't think that matters.
Philippe: Okay.
Shubh: I can get him [01:18:00] on. Uh, okay. Thank you very much. Uh, that is a wrap.
This is a presentation of Indian Dad Media in association with
Philippe: This is a Thursday Media production.
